• Google Chrome audit on caching

  If I run an audit on my sites with Google Chrome, I get this message in the Leverage browser caching section: The following resources are missing a cache expiration. Resources that do not specify an expiration may not be cached by browsers: A list of all the pictures follows. I get a similar notice in Leverage proxy caching: Consider adding a "Cache-Control: public" header to the following resources: Apart from pictures, I also get a notice about HTML, CSS and JavaScript files: The following resources are explicitly non-cacheable. Consider making them cacheable if possible: Its funny because I've worked hard to cache all static contents (except for pictures, where I just left Apache's default settings). Firefox does indeed store all these items in cache. Is there anything I should improve in my HTTP headers? Here's the complete header set of some items as loaded after removing the browser caché. Pictures use default settings I didn't really check before, the rest should be cachéd for three hours. I can set headers with both .htaccess and PHP. • Missing chars in JpGraph

  I have a web site that runs on Windows and uses cp1252 (aka Win-1252) so it can display Spanish characters. The app generates some plots with JpGraph 2.3. These plots use the Tahoma Open Type font family to display text labels. Strings are provided in ANSI (i.e., cp1252) and font files support cp1252 (actually, the *.ttf files were copied from the system's font folder). It's been working fine in several setups from PHP/5.2.6 to PHP/5.3.0. Problems started when I ran the app under PHP/5.3.1: all non-ASCII are replaced by the hollow rectangle that represents missing or unknown chars. JpGraph's documentation is not very precise about how it expects international chars. Apparently, text is handled internally by the imagettftext() function, which expects UTF-8. However, encoding everything as UTF-8 breaks the app in all the systems. Where ANSI used to work fine, I get wrong characters (Ê instead of Ú). Where I got missing chars, now I get a PHP error: Warning: imagettftext(): any2eucjp(): something happen Do you have any clue about what changed in GD2 from PHP/5.3.0 to 5.3.1 that could be affecting the rendering on non-ASCII chars? How am I expected to feed JpGraph with strings in the Win-1252 charset?

• Merge Microsoft Word documents with TortoiseSVN

  TortoiseSVN has a nice VBA script that allows to merge Microsoft Word documents using Word builtin change tracking functionality. This way, when I merge changes from a branch into the trunk I can resolve the conflicts in Word documents. However, the feature is not as useful as it could because it doesn't track revision changes; it just compares the two documents as a whole. This way, when I merge a revision where one paragraph was added to the document I'm not offered to review this paragraph. Instead, I have to review all the differences between the source and target documents (including stuff like TOC bookmark names). Is it an inherent limitation I cannot override? Or is it due to the fact that my Word version is pretty old? (I'm using Word 2002). Also, if you know about a magic tool or plugin... ;-)

• Unknown error when submit a REST request to Liferay json API

  I'm writing an script in Python to automatically update the structures in my Liferay portal and I want to do it via the json REST API. I make a request to get an structure (method getStructure), and it worked. • May volatile be in user defined types to help writing thread-safe code

  I know, it has been made quite clear in a couple of questions/answers before, that volatile is related to the visible state of the c++ memory model and not to multithreading. On the other hand, this article by Alexandrescu uses the volatile keyword not as a runtime feature but rather as a compile time check to force the compiler into failing to accept code that could be not thread safe. In the article the keyword is used more like a required_thread_safety tag than the actual intended use of volatile. Is this (ab)use of volatile appropriate? What possible gotchas may be hidden in the approach? The first thing that comes to mind is added confusion: volatile is not related to thread safety, but by lack of a better tool I could accept it. Basic simplification of the article: If you declare a variable volatile, only volatile member methods can be called on it, so the compiler will block calling code to other methods. Declaring an std::vector instance as volatile will block all uses of the class. Adding a wrapper in the shape of a locking pointer that performs a const_cast to release the volatile requirement, any access through the locking pointer will be allowed.   Which project tracking tool do you use? Does it allow programmers to bill hours worked to projects/tasks? Does it allow to track items promised vs. items delivered? Does it allow to forecast personnel needs when you have only a ballpark estimate of how many hours you are going to need for different task types? Does it integrate with your bug tracker? [Mantis] Does it integrate with your source control tool? [Subversion] Does it allow you to easily publish your schedule and current priorities to team members? Does it produce reports on any or all of the above? Am I even right in calling a tool that does those things a "Project tracking/management tool"? What does your tool have that makes you love it and use it every day? I don't really care about Gantt charts. I find Microsoft Project quite clunky for this needs (although I'm hardly an expert user).

• Join + IEqualityComparer<T> and HashCode

  Im writing my own LINQ reference but Im getting troubles with some of the more complicated operators implementations. There is a Join implementation that takes a IEqualityComparer Im getting just crazy. Im trying to understand it first before I write (obviously) Image this two lists: List<string> initials = new List<string> {"A", "B", "C", "D", "E"}; List<string> words = new List<string> {"Ant", "Crawl", "Pig", "Boat", "Elephant", "Arc"}; Nothing weird here. I want to join both lists by the Initial, something like: Initial=A Word=Ant Initial=A Word=Arc Initial=B Word=Boat ... I need a comparator, I wrote this: public class InitialComparator : IEqualityComparer<string> { public bool Equals(string x, string y) { return x.StartsWith(y); } public int GetHashCode(string obj) { return obj[0].GetHashCode(); } } The Join itself: var blah = initials.Join(words, initial => initial, word => word, (initial, word) => new {Initial = initial, Word = word}, new InitialComparator()); It's the first time Im using HashCodes, after a good session of debugging I see that every word go to the comparator and look at its HashCode, if another word has the same HashCode it calls equals. Since I want to compare just the initial I though that I just need the first letter Hash (Am I wrong?) The thing is that this is not working correctly. Its says that "Ant" and "Arc" are equals, Ok, its comparing every word in the same list or not, But it adds only the last word it finds, in this case Arc, ignoring Ant and Ant is equals to "A" too... If I put "Ant" and "Ant" it add both. In short, What is the way of doing something like that? I know that Im doing something wrong. Thank you.

• EF Code First Detached Entity not updating object reference

Can someone tell me where is the mistake? In advance : the entity reaches the point of update with all the properties correctly set. EF just fails to update the FK in the Database (no exception though)

• Why does virtual assignment behave differently than other virtual functions of the same signature?

  While playing with implementing a virtual assignment operator I have ended with a funny behavior. It is not a compiler glitch, since g++ 4.1, 4.3 and VS 2005 share the same behavior. Is there any sensible explanation to this odd behavior?

But I can't figure out how to create foreign keys on item_id since the source table varies depending on product_id. Should I stick to my original idea?

What's the recommended way to handle this? • Best canvas for drawing in wxPython?

  I have to draw a graph of elements composing a topological model of a physical network. There would be nodes and arches, and the latter could be unidirectional or bidirectional. I would like to capture the clicking events for the nodes and the arches (to select the element and show its properties somewhere), and the dragging events for the nodes (to move them around) and arches (to connect or disconnect elements). I've done some research and I've narrowed the alternatives down to OGL (Object Graphics Library) and FloatCanvas. I would not like to go down to the DrawingContext, but it is not discarded if necessary. Which canvas option would you choose?

I'll basically use it to upload changes to web sites. I've tried like a dozen tools and they're all terrible. They have difficult interfaces, you need to spend ten minutes configuring absurdly complicate project settings, there's no simple way to ignore specific files or they use custom databases that break when someone else uploads files—not to mention deployment frameworks that force you to script everything in their custom language. I don't need or even want to schedule or automate. I want a manual process I can review. I'm tired of picking files one by one in Filezilla while reading the Subversion logs. I'd love an open source tool but...

• UPDATE from SELECT complains about more that one value returned

  I have this data structure: request ======= building_id lot_code building ======== building_id lot_id lot === lot_id lot_code The request table is missing the value for the building_id column and I want to fill it in from the other tables. So I've tried this: UPDATE request SET building_id = ( SELECT bu.building_id FROM building bu INNER JOIN lot lo ON bu.lot_id=lo.lot_id WHERE lo.lot_code = request.lot_code ); But I'm getting this error: Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , , = or when the subquery is used as an expression. Is it due to wrong syntax? The data model allows more than one building per lot but actual data doesn't contain such cases so there should be at most one building_id per lot_code.

• Are protected constructors considered good practice?

  I'm writing some little helper classes to handle trees. Basically, I have a node and a special root node that represents the tree. I want to keep it generic and simple. This is part of the code: <?php class Tree extends TreeNode{ public function addById($node_id, $parent_id, $generic_content){ if( $parent = $this->findNodeById($parent_id) ){ $parent->addChildById($node_id, $generic_content); } } } class TreeNode{ public function __construct($node_id, $parent_id, $generic_content){ // ... } protected function addChildById($node_id, $generic_content){ $this->children[] = new TreeNode($this->node_id, $node_id, $generic_content); } } $Categories = new Tree; $Categories->addById(1, NULL, $foo); $Categories->addById(2, NULL, $bar); $Categories->addById(3, 1, $gee); ?> My questions: Is it sensible to force TreeNode instances to be created through TreeNode::addById()? If it's so, would it be good practise to declare TreeNode::__construct() as private/protected?
