  • How do I reset proxy in terminal to automatic if not connected via proxy

    Well,all I ever wanted was to download and install an application from the terminal. And to my surprise I just can't I tried to reset proxy of the terminal by some commands but it doesn't happen and automatically switches back to this proxy 172.16.0.16 (which apparently was my college proxy). I checked in my system settings too.. I don't understand why this is recurring. Please be comprehensive,I am a nube :) Also I further would like to know how to bypass proxy server since I couldn't access any of the repositories as they were blocked in my college's proxy settings as is Ubuntu's homepage. Thanks for your time. For sudo ls /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/ it displays a different set of options where proxy is not listed.I am on 12.10,if this should help any.I put a snap of the terminal after the above command has been entered.

  • In Search of Automatic ORM with REST interface

    I have this wish that so far Google hasn't been able to fulfill. I want to find a package (ideally in PHP, because I know PHP, but I guess that's not a hard requirement) that you point at a database, it builds an ORM based on what it finds there, and exposes a REST interface over the web. Everything I've found in my searches requires a bunch of code--like, it wants you to build the classes for it, but it'll handle the REST request routing. Or it does database and relational stuff just fine, but you have to build your own methods for all the CRUD actions. That's dumb. REST is well defined. If I wanted to re-invent the wheel, I totally could, but I don't want to. Isn't there somebody who's built a one-shot super-simple auto-RESTing web service package?

  • Automatic Appointment Conflict Resolution

    I'm trying to figure out an algorithm for resolving appointment times. I currently have a naive algorithm that pushes down conflicting appointments repeatedly, until there are no more appointments. # The appointment list is always sorted on start time appointment_list = [ <Appointment: 10:00 -> 12:00>, <Appointment: 11:00 -> 12:30>, <Appointment: 13:00 -> 14:00>, <Appointment: 13:30 -> 14:30>, ] Constraints are that appointments: cannot be after 15:00 cannot be before 9:00 This is the naive algorithm for i, app in enumerate(appointment_list): for possible_conflict in appointment_list[i+1:]: if possible_conflict.start < app.end: difference = app.end - possible_conflict.start possible_conflict.end += difference possible_conflict.start += difference else: break This results in the following resolution, which obviously breaks those constraints, and the last appointment will have to be pushed to the following day. appointment_list = [ <Appointment: 10:00 -> 12:00>, <Appointment: 12:00 -> 13:30>, <Appointment: 13:30 -> 14:30>, <Appointment: 14:30 -> 15:30>, ] Obviously this is sub-optimal, It performs 3 appointment moves when the confict could have been resolved with one: if we were able to push the first appointment backwards, we could avoid moving all the subsequent appointments down. I'm thinking that there should be a sort of edit-distance approach that would calculate the least number of appointments that should be moved in order to resolve the scheduling conflict, but I can't get the a handle on the methodology. Should it be breadth-first or depth first solution search. When do I know if the solution is "good enough"?

    I am currently trying to find out how to trim with my new TP and was wondering about the difference of manual/online trimming. Here is my setup: ThinkPad T430s with SSD Samsung 830, 128GB and Xubuntu 12.10, here are some outputs to check if trim will work on my system (got these from here: http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/SSD/TRIM) root@eike-tp:~# sudo hdparm -I /dev/sda | grep -i TRIM * Data Set Management TRIM supported (limit 8 blocks) First, I tried the online trimming: How to enable TRIM? my fstab with discard inserted: UUID=d6c49c17-a4f1-466c-9f7e-896c20db3bba / ext4 discard,noatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1 # swap was on /dev/sda5 during installation UUID=a0322f5f-c6c1-4896-863f-668f0638d8cf none swap sw 0 0 tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,noatime,mode=1777 0 0 I tried to test if it works (but I don't get any zeroes when I try it with /dev/sda), but found out that this method is only possible with SSD type 2 and I seem to have type 3. So I don't know if it works or not. The Ubuntuwiki (first link) recommends manual trimming, so I set up a daily cronjob instead of discard: #!/bin/sh LOG=/var/log/batched_discard.log echo "*** $(date -R) ***" >> $LOG fstrim -v / >> $LOG the wiki article suggests weekly or daily.   • Consoles in Ubuntu and automatic upgrade

    So I recently discovered that ubuntu is simultaneously running 6 consoles in addition to the GUI that everybody uses, which can be accessed by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 ... +F6 and then the default GUI with Ctrl+Alt+F7. What use can these consoles have when I can just open a terminal in the GUI mode? Also, why is having consoles like this advantageous for computer users; wouldn't a GUI be much more simplistic? Also, running the console told me that I was running a development version of Ubuntu Quantal which is version 12.10. The login screen (correctly?) says that I'm running 12.04 LTS. What does that mean? Thanks everybody!

  • New Feature! Automatic Categories for Geekswithblogs.net

    One of the features we have been working on is a way to categorize posts without the need of all our bloggers getting on the same page with what categories we have and making them select the categories.  Johnny Kauffman, one of our team members at AJI Software, developed what we call the Sherlock Project over the past few months.  Sherlock is a category suggestion engine based on the content within the posts.  Now, after a post is published, Sherlock will investigate the content and come up with the suggested categories that content fits in.  This will now allow you to go to the specific topics you are interested in and see all the related posts. This is just the beginning, so many more opportunities will arise now that we have our content organized.  One of the first features I will be adding is RSS feeds for each category and sub category.  If you are into ALM, we will have a feed for that!   • Automatic syncing USB HD drive to local HD (different computers)

    I have a desktop PC at work, and a laptop at home.... or elsewhere. What I want to do is use a USB HD to store my documents (about 130 Gb, maybe more). That would serve as backup and also port my files to my laptop. I'd like any of both computers to automatically sync all files there with local copies, so that I can work at either of them and keep updated copies of everything in both (plus the USB drive, which would allow me to work in other computers, too, apart from being another backup). Dropbox ins't a solution for me, due to pricing and 100Gb limit. The workflow would be as follows, to clear things up: I work on PC1. Changes in files are automatically synced to USB whenever a file is modified. I go home and boot PC2. I plug the usb drive and local files are synced (if changed) with the most recent usb copies. While I work at PC2, again, changes in files spread to my USB drive. Whenever I go to PC1 again, I plug my usb and again everything synces. So the questions would be: a) Am I crazy? b) Can it be done? c) Will I have any file conflicts (provided I'm the only one that will modify the files)?

  • Automatic generate code: "derived work"?

    For example, I've GPL software. I'm the author of this GPL software. This GPL software has, between its code, Doxygen comments. These Doxygen comments are written to generate a CC-BY-SA html page, in order to upload this generated documentation in my project website under CC-BY-SA license. But, the Doxygen documentation output is a "derivate work"? After all, this documentation is based on my GPL source code. In this case, the documentation must be GPL. But, I want the documentation is CC-BY-SA, because it is documentation. GFDL doesn't help. GPL code can't become GFDL (the opposite yes). If this output is really a derivate work, I think, creates a strange situation, because, if I distribute my work, the recipient users can't legally distribute the generated documentation: while with my work I can do I want, the users don't, thus, they have to distribute any derivated work with the same license I offer them. What is the solution?

  • Automatic language transformation in editor or IDE [on hold]

    Are there any tools that are capable of editing code but in different language? To be more concrete, I want to parse java source file in editor, compile it to my language X, edit in X and compile back to java on save. Or edit pom.xml file using non-XML syntax. Which editor or IDE would be easiest to use for implementing such prototype? Option to transform only a snippet would be ideal to limit effort on parsing. For one example, Intellij IDEA can display anonymous class so it looks like lambda expression hiding some of boilerplate.

  • Wordpress - Automatic email to admin on password change

    Noticed something interesting in WordPress...hopefully its just me not seeing the right option. Whenever a user requests a new password, it will notify the site admin that the password was changed. What I'd like to do is disable this feature, as for this specific site I really don't care if users are changing their password. Is this a setting somewhere that I'm missing, or does it require a plugin to disable this functionality?

  • Disable automatic starting of sshd?

    Simple question here; what's the correct way to stop the sshd service from starting when the OS boots ? I'm not sure if this answer is correct, so I'm hoping some guru(s) can help me out!   • Bluetooth automatic mouse connection not working

    I'd like my HP Bluetooth Mouse x4000b (no usb dongle) to connect automatically when starting my HP laptop (Ubuntu 14.04), but I can't succeed in it : I'm forced to do it manually by clicking the "connect" button. I know this topic has been answered many times, but no solution worked for me. Here's what I tried so far : Creating the file /etc/default/bluetooth with lines : HIDD_ENABLED=1 HIDD_OPTIONS="--connect F0:65:DD:7D:EC:A0 --server" Putting hciconfig hci0 reset at the end of /etc/init.d/bluetooth Putting /etc/init.d/bluetooth stop sleep 1 /etc/init.d/bluetooth start in /etc/rc.local None of these solution worked, I've read a lot of topics but couldn't find a solution ... that's why I'm asking that here, hoping you can help me troubleshooting that.   • Automatic switching between monitor configurations

    I have a laptop and an external monitor and i was wondering if there was a simple approach to switching between multiple monitor configurations based on the detected available displays. For example: When i am at home and i plug in my external monitor i would like this to automatically become enabled and the laptop screen to become disabled. As soon as i pull out the display cable for the external monitor, i would like the laptop screen to automatically become enabled. I was expecting this to just "work" just like it does in windows - but it seems to be much harder than that. I am aware of the xrandr command to turn displays on and off but i cannot seem to find a way to get this to work the way i describe above. I had also found this post about switching between multiple monitor configurations and the results seem a bit inconclusive. However i was hoping that with xrandr there would be a simpler solution. For me, the fact that when i pull out my external monitor the screen just goes black and i get an error message is a big issue holding me back from making the complete switch to linux as i move around alot as a student. My OS of choice is currently Kubuntu 12.04 but i am willing to change to something else if it provides a better way of setting up the described setup.

  • Ubuntu automatic logout whenever I execute exe files

    I have a problem. Here's the thing. There were 4 partitions in my hard drive: One for ubuntu root folder One for ubuntu home folder One for general stuffs like music, movies... And the last one for SWAP To install Windows 7, I resized partitions and moving the order of partitions by using GParted. I moved all of the ext formatted partitions to the left, so that means the spare space would be at the right. And I formatted that spare space in NTFS and install windows 7. After successfully installing windows 7, I used LiveUSB to fix grub. I installed Boot Repair and, with just one click, now I can dual boot ubuntu and windows 7. But, the point, because of changing the order of partitions, especially the partition consisting of home folder, I couldn't log in the ubuntu. I used recovery mode and changed file /etc/passwd. Everything almost got back to normal except one thing. The windows apps that I installed via wine don't work anymore. I run them via accessing menu Applications/Wine/Programs but nothing loads. One more thing, when I double click on exe files to run them, ubuntu suddenly log outs. Thank you for reading my post, it's quite long and my English is fairly poor. I'd appreciate for anyone who reads it.

    The closest-related implementation in Haskell I have seen is the forward mode at http://hackage.haskell.org/packages/archive/fad/1.0/doc/html/Numeric-FAD.html. The closest related related research appears to be reverse mode for another functional language related to Scheme at http://www.bcl.hamilton.ie/~qobi/stalingrad/. I see reverse mode in Haskell as kind of a holy grail for a lot of tasks, with the hopes that it could use Haskell's nested data parallelism to gain a nice speedup in heavy numerical optimization.
