• HP Probook 4530s great specs, but lagging. Hard Drive?

  I have this laptop, which has a i3 processor, 4gb memory, 7200rpm hard drive. So there is nothing wrong with the specs. Even when I have no applications open, simply closing and opening windows, lags. Or opening the start menu, or dragging icons across the desktop. sometimes even the cursor lags. So I checked out the resource monitor, and the resources using disk activity are svchost Avast ------- my antivirus, but not much System (PID 4) ------ This is using a huge chunk The total disk activity fluctuates between %50 - %100

• Port 53 UDP Outgoing flood

  Hello I am experiencing very huge problem. I have 4 computers in network, and from each a lot of data is being sent to ISP name servers. Sometimes data is being sent a little from each computer in network, sometimes it is just a lot of data from one computer. I have antivirus (Avast) and malware scan (SpyBot) I know port 53 UDP is dns which resolves domain IP so its' needed. Also I have read that ISP name server might have been infected. So what is the best thing to do in this situation. Also sometimes internet starts to lag really because of port 53

• Boot time virus scan from USB drive

  I want to check for viruses on a computer that I suspect may be infected with malware. Its users are running an antivirus, but there's always the risk that something slips past and the way I see it, once the system is infected the antivirus is useless because the malware can hide itself from the AV. I think the best way to go (besides clean reinstall of the OS) would be to have an antivirus running at a boot time from a CD or a USB key. That way, the malware is just lying on the disk and cannot do any of its hide-and-seek stuff (provided the AV comes from an uninfected PC and all that). So, I'm looking for something that: Runs at boot time (off USB key or CD-ROM) Does not touch or require the local OS Discovers malware fairly well (like, Avast, AVG, Norton, whatever -- I think the're all the same anyway) Can handle Windows filesystems (FAT 32, NTFS, WinFS ;-) ) Comes from some sort of trusted source (no Windows Antivirus 2009) I know that this is no silver bullet (nothing is, really*), but I do have a feeling it's more likely to help than doing the scan* within the infected system.

• Tracking down random BSOD on windows 7

  I have gotten a computer running windows 7 handed to me that randomly, several times a day, bsods with a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (50) or WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (124). Crashes happens regardless of load. I am running out of ideas for how to track this down. Analyzing the minidumps shows the crash to be in ntkrnlmp.exe/WMIADAP.exe System has plenty of power (600w) Ram checks out fine using memtest86+ over a weekend. System is clean inside. No dust build up. Temperatures stay low. As far as I know (and reliability history shows) no new drivers were installed for several months before the problems started. All drivers are now up to date. sfc /scannow reports the system as clean. CHKDSK reports the disks as clean Removing the AV (Avast) has no effect. Any more things that should be tried on windows 7 before I start replacing the hardware?

• Need help identiying a nasty rootkit in Windows

  I have a nasty rootkit that not tools seem to be able to idenity. I know for sure it's a rootkit, but I can figure out which rootkit it is. Here's what I gathered so far: It creates multiple copies of itself in %HOME%\Local Settings\Temp with names like Q.EXE, IAJARZ.exe, etc., and install them as hidden services. These EXE have SysInternals identifiers in them so they're definitely rootkits. It hooked very deep in the system, including file read/write, security policies, registry read/write, and possibly WinSock/TCP/IP. When going to Sophos.com to download their software, the rootkit inject something called Microsoft Ajax Tootkit into the page, which injects code into the email submission form in order to redirect it. (EDIT: I might have panicked. Looks like Sophos does use an AJAZ email form, their form is just broken on Chrome so it looked like a mail form injection attack, the link is http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/virus-removal-tool/download.aspx ) Super-Antispyware found a lot of spyware cookies, in the name of .kaspersky.2o7.net, etc. (just chedk 2o7.net, looks like it's a legit ad company) I tried comparing DNS lookup from the infected systems and from system in other physical locations, no DNS redirections it seems. I used dd to copy the MBR and compared it with the MBR provided by ms-sys package, no differences so it's not infecting MBR. No antivirus or rootkit scanner be able to identify it. Most of them can't even find it. I tried scanning, in-situ (normal mode), in safe mode, and boot to linux live CD. Scanners used: Avast, Sophos anti rootkit, Kasersky TDSSKiller, GMER, RootkitRevealer, and many others. Kaspersky reported some unsigned system files that ought to be signed (e.g. tcpip.sys), and reported a number of MD5 mismatches. But otherwise couldn't identify anything based on signature. When running Sysinternal RootkitRevealer and Sophos AntiRootkit, CPU usage goes up to 100% and gets stucked. The Rootkit is blocking them. When trying running/installing HiJackThis, RootkitRevealer and some other scanners, it tells me system security policy prevent running/installing it. The list of malicious acitivities go on and on. here's a sample of logs from all my scans. In particular, aswSnx.SYS, apnenfno.sys and PROCMON20.SYS has a huge number of hooks. It's hard to tell if the rootkit replaced legit program files like aswSnx.SYS (from Avast) and PROCMON20.SYS (from Sysinternal Process Monitor). I can't find whether apnenfno.sys is from a legit program. Help to identify it is appreciated. • Folders disappear every timeWindows XP starts up

  Whenever my Windows XP machine starts up, subfolders disappear from the first top-level folder, listed alphabetically (eg. from "C:\AA Backups"). The first time it happened I suspected user error (such as an unintentional delete or copy). But I then found it happens on every start-up, sometimes affecting huge numbers of files. Renaming the affected folder (eg to "ZZ Backups") just means that a different folder is affected the next time. Avast found no virus or malware that would seem to be responsible. The missing files are not visible to an undelete utility such as NTFSUndelete. Running "chkdsk/f" found no problems and did not fix the problem. File permissions also appear corrupted - a few files which should be accessible are missing "read" permission. What's happened to this machine?? Any ideas or reports of similar experiences would be most welcome.

• Windows7 - Mouse not working, all windows + tray act like inactive

  I have this problem for two days now. First when it happened, logging out and back in helped, but now this occurs right after booting. I cannot activate any window by clicking into it, and also cannot minimalise, or close it with mouse. In few applications I cannot even interact with them with mouse (e.g. clicking on links in browser). I can scroll an active window with the trackball, and sometimes everything works normally for a little while. Everything works fine, when I use keyboard for this, I can resize, move, close windows with keyboard shortcuts, etc. I ran a complete Avast! scan, but it found nothing important. Also event viewer did not show any relevant errors. Here's a log from HijackThis if it helps anything.

• Connection reseted- error 101

  I have a problem with internet connection- when i try to load website, it will always write this error:Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): Connection was reseted. I'm using Win7 64 bit and I have this router: asus rt n10. First, i tried to change MTU from 1504 to 1472 and it worked for a while, but yesterday it started again. Now I have MTU 1440 but I don't want to lower it more. Is there another solution? Btw I have no malware in my laptop (I used the avast scan) and I've also deleted cookies and disabled proxy server (I'm not using any).

• Internet connection too slow

  I now think that it is the ISP. After a full scan of my system. With super antispyware, avast, norton and spybot. Internet connection is still slow. And the truth is we have recently upgraded the connection from 512 kbps to 768. And I get a .25 Mbps at speedtest.net which is equivalent to 256 Kbps. Its not even half of the advertised speed. Is it normal for ISP's to just limit your bandwidth if you are always downloading something from the internet? Are they entitled to do this.

• Internet wireless connected with limited access, windows vista

  Hello I had some malware in my computer so I did a bit of manual work to remove it including resetting TCP/IP. Now the malware is gone. I can see my home wireless network and I can get connected to it but when connected I get the Internet wireless connected with limited access message. When I go to the IE I cannot browse. When I tried to ping 192.168.1.1 I got an Error Code 1231 Unconnected Network Problem. I have deactivated my Windows firewall as I thought it could be hyperactive security. Still no luck. I have Norton but it is not active, I have also Avast and AVG installed but they are not active. Any ideas?

  Hi guys, i am using XP SP2, and everything where working fine. Somehow i can go to some web pages, but i cant login to them, for example www.buzzerbeater.com, i cant access my hotmail/msn, outlook doesnt work either, also www.realgm.com, i cant access the forums too. I have tried with IE7/Firefox/Chrome, but same result. I was using avast free edition that i removed, and i dont have any other security software installed. My laptop from the same network works perfectly. Any ideas?

• Why can't I open programs after watching youtube videos for a while?

  I have recently built a new PC, and it worked fine for a while (1-2 months of no problems whatsoever). However in the recent weeks I noticed that after I watched some youtube videos and closed everything, I can no longer do anything except move the mouse and expand the Startup Menu. If I click on any of the programs on the Start Menu or type a program on the Run text box, it won't open anything. I can't open taskmgr, or windows explorer, or even shut down the PC. I don't have anything else running when I'm watching videos except ZoneAlarm and Avast. The only workaround I can do when this happens is a forced shutdown (holding the power button of my PC), and restart if I wanted to do anything more. But this happens a lot - about 4-5 times a week so I'm worried it would fry up my hardware if I keep on doing this. • Unistalled C++ Redistributables on Windows Vista

  Windows Vista Service Pack2 32 bit I uninstalled C++ re-distrubutables (was not aware they are necessary for some applications to run) and I am facing error Cannot start application because the side-by-side configuration is not correct when i start applications like Avast, Revo Uninstaller etc. I came across this page. But the downloaded vcredist_86.exe doesn't seem to do much. It extracts itself and that's it nothing after that. No error nothing. I just finished installing 300+ MB updates on my system, so i don't want to use the System Restore option [And, I don't know which Restore Point to revert to]. Any other way to get this done?

• Removed Java replaced with newest "Sun Java", disc won't boot, and won't let me re-install grub using boot repair disc

  Had a minor problem with my Stock market platform. Set-up screen would freeze program. Called their tech support, got their "Linux guy", who advised remove all Java and replace, not with synaptic version, but newest Sun Java. After removing, computer auto rebooted, and went to blue mem-test screen. Showed no errors, but couldn't get back in. Tried two versions of boot repair disc from iso (checked md5sum, showed good.), but fix aborted, giving apt-error detected. Opened a terminal and typed (or copy/paste): sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda1" apt-get -f install. My system is Ubuntu 12.04. Had a few very minor issues from install, all fixed. Also added some of my favorite gnome tricks just to make life easier, but none that could have caused this. Added script to add shortcuts to desktop, open terminal in any menu from inside it, access root terminal, etc. System was firewalled and using avast antivirus (o.k., I'm paranoid. Used to do Windows sys-op and security.) But relative newbie to Linux.

• Service Application too visible

  Working on a service application in Delphi 5 that is intended to run on Windows XP - 7. Most of the application is coming together nicely, but I'm running into one issue. Part of this service application is a form that displays data occasionally (similar to the slider box Avast uses to let you know its updated). When the service shows the form, the form displays on the taskbar, but we don't want it to. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to hide the form's button on the taksbar? None of the standard methods I've found for regular applications have worked so far. Thanks.

• Unable to stop chrome.exe *32

  So I was installing roboform today and was unable to stop the process chrome.exe *32... Even when I uninstalled chrome. This is the error I got: I used lockhunter and it said it was located in %appdata%\Local\Google\Chrome. However, it was unable to unlock, delete or rename. When I use explorer to delete or rename that folder, it says it's being used by Chrome. Even after restarting my computer it still does this. I've tried using the built in chrome task manager (Wrench View Background Pages) and I can't seem to find a process there that has the same amount of memory. I have run many, many virus scans, by: Microsoft security essentials AVG (Free version) Malwarebytes (Pro version) Norton 360 (Pro version) McAfee (Pro Version) Avira (Free version) Avast! Antivirus (Free version) None of which returned with any viruses. • Why won't Google Chrome install on my Windows 7?

  I can tell something is wrong with my computer. A little history: Google Chrome was not running correctly. When i was using facebook, any link on face that ran an ajax javascript function would not work. No error was being thrown, it just wasn't working. I uninstalled Chrome and reinstalled it. On re-install, a toolbar automatically installed with Chrome. BitTorrentBar. I did not install BitTorrentBar, it installed on it's own. Bad. When BitTorrentBar was active, then ajax functions on facebook worked. When I deactivated or uninstalled BittorrentBar from Chrome extensions, then ajax stopped working. I ran scanned the computer with Avast (free version) and SpyBot Search and Destroy (also free). They found nothing wrong. I uninstalled Chrome using Control Panel and then I went through my file system deleting anything that had "google", "BitTorrent", "chrome", or "conduit". Conduit seems to distribute BitTorrentBar. After doing all that, I tried to reinstall Chrome. I got this error: System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The system cannot find the file specified at System.Diagnostics.Process.StartWithShellExecuteEx(ProcessStartInfo startInfo) at System.Diagnostics.Process.Start() at System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(ProcessStartInfo startInfo) at ClickOnceBootStrap.ClickOnceEntry.Main() This error interupts the Chrome install every time! computer scans don't show anything wrong. So then, I thought this might be a .net framework error. Perhaps I deleted something I wasn't supposed to. So I reinstalled .NET Framework 4 and checked the repair option. I also ran Windows Updates. When I tried to download Chrome, again I got the same error as listed above. What should I do?

  I have a Windows XP desktop and a Windows 7 laptop both connected to a TrendNET TEW-432BRP router, which is connected to the Internet. They both have static IPs. The desktop has an external hard drive connected to it. The laptop is wireless and the desktop is wired. I enabled sharing on the external hard drive about two years ago when I bought it. I mapped it as a network drive on the laptop. I think it was yesterday, the laptop just stopped recognizing any of the computers on my network (When I open network, my laptop's the only one on it). I also get an error message "An error occurred while connecting A: to \CERTIFIED-DATA\Expansion Microsoft Windows Network: The network path was not found. The connection has not been restored" when I try to connect to the network drive. Both computers run Avast, and there hasn't been any problems with it. This has happened before but I never figured out why and how to fix it. It's usually fixed when I reinstall the OS of the affected system. Edit: I can't navigate the computer using \\CERTIFIED-DATA. I get a message saying "Windows cannot access \CERTIFIED-DATA. Check the spelling of the name, Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network" I clicked diagnose on the message and it failed to find anything wrong I clicked diagnose on my wireless connection, and it just keeps trying to check if something is wrong with the connection I can ping it successfully

• Mustek 1200 CP driver SFC4.SYS bluescreens with BAD_POOL_HEADER

  I have Windows XP SP2. Recently it started bluescreening right after starting up with 'BAD_POOL_HEADER', 0x00000019 error caused by SFC4.SYS driver. After googling for a while I've found out that this is my Mustek's 1200 CP scanner driver. Booting in safe mode and uninstalling it solved the problem... And created another one: now I can't use my scanner. The weird thing is, that it has been working for a while on this PC without any problems. It all started suddenly, and I can't remember installing anything that might have affected it. Reverting to several earlier system restore points didn't help. I've tried re-installing it from the Mustek website, just in case if my copy got corrupted or infected by a virus, but it did not help - it still bluescreens. Also, I've installed Avast and scanned my PC - there were no viruses found. If anyone had such a problem before or has an idea what might have caused it, please help. ED: @Michael Todd: ...try installing on another PC... I've installed it on my friends PC. He has the same OS version, with the latest updates just like mine (he wasn't too happy, even after I've assured him that it is easy to fix by uninstalling that driver :] ). It worked fine - no bluescreens or whatsoever. So I think I've narrowed it down to either BIOS settings, or some wicked driver conflict. Next thing I'm going to try is to re-install XP, or install windows 7. I'm not too happy with a prospect of mucking about with BIOS settings...

• Spammer relaying via Postfix mail server

  I have a Plesk 9.5 mail server (cm.snowbarre.co.za) on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS which forwards all SMTP traffic to an anti-spam server cacti.snowbarre.co.za. Many times I see the headers on the anti-spam server to contain from addresses not hosted on the mail server and I have checked and confirmed that my server is not an open relay server. • Blue screen error code 1000008e

  I'm getting blue screens, mostly when trying to boot a program that required a lot of memory (games, photo editing software.) So far I've only managed to catch one set of error codes: BCCode: 1000008e BCP1: C0000005 BCP2: ADA393BA BCP3: E9BCEBC4 BCP4: 00000000 OS Version: 6_0_6002 Service Pack: 2_0 Product: 768_1 It's on a Sony VAIO Laptop VGN FW-41E, Vista OS service pack 2. Besides these codes it lists two 'temporary' files that were related with this crash: ...AppData\Local\Temp\WER-134925-0.sysdata.xml ...AppData\Local\Temp\WERDA66.tmp.version.txt When I googled these files some site said it was linked to a worm called 'yodo', but virus scans don't return any results (hitman pro, malware bytes, avast antivirus all turn up empty). Upon further searching about this yodo worm, I came across security stronghold where someone posted they had acquired this worm when downloading access and excel templates. Now, I actually did download templates for the same programs, they might have been the same, they may be related or I might be grasping at straws here. I have not noticed any issues other in performance as of late, just BSOD's when I start software that requires some memory, but I never had issues with these exact same programs before. Help and/or hints are required on how to actually figure out what's the root of this BSOD issue and how can I fix it. Do you reckon it's actually a virus? What program should be able to remove YODO worm stuff?
