• Two strange efficiency problems in Mathematica

  FIRST PROBLEM I have timed how long it takes to compute the following statements (where V[x] is a time-intensive function call): Alice = Table[V[i],{i,1,300},{1000}]; Bob = Table[Table[V[i],{i,1,300}],{1000}]^tr; Chris_pre = Table[V[i],{i,1,300}]; Chris = Table[Chris_pre,{1000}]^tr; Alice, Bob, and Chris are identical matricies computed 3 slightly different ways. I find that Chris is computed 1000 times faster than Alice and Bob. It is not surprising that Alice is computed 1000 times slower because, naively, the function V must be called 1000 more times than when Chris is computed. But it is very surprising that Bob is so slow, since he is computed identically to Chris except that Chris stores the intermediate step Chris_pre. Why does Bob evaluate so slowly? SECOND PROBLEM Suppose I want to compile a function in Mathematica of the form f(x)=x+y where "y" is a constant fixed at compile time (but which I prefer not to directly replace in the code with its numerical because I want to be able to easily change it). If y's actual value is y=7.3, and I define f1=Compile[{x},x+y] f2=Compile[{x},x+7.3] then f1 runs 50% slower than f2. How do I make Mathematica replace "y" with "7.3" when f1 is compiled, so that f1 runs as fast as f2? Many thanks!

• Process Power to the People that Create Engagement

  Organizations often speak about their engagement problems as if the problem is the people they are trying to engage - employees,  partners, customers and citizens.  The reality of most engagement problems is that the processes put in place to engage are impersonal, inflexible, unintuitive, and often completely ignorant of the population they are trying to serve. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Delight? How appropriate during this short week of the US Independence Day Holiday that we're focusing on People, Process and Engagement. As we celebrate this holiday in the US and the historic independence we gained (sorry Brits!) - it's interesting to think back to 1776 to the creation of that pivotal document, the Declaration of Independence. What tremendous pressure to create an engaging document and founding experience they must have felt. "On June 11, 1776, in anticipation of the impending vote for independence from Great Britain, the Continental Congress appointed five men — Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston — to write a declaration that would make clear to people everywhere why this break from Great Britain was both necessary and inevitable. The committee then appointed Jefferson to draft a statement. Jefferson produced a "fair copy" of his draft declaration, which became the basic text of his "original Rough draught." The text was first submitted to Adams, then Franklin, and finally to the other two members of the committee. Before the committee submitted the declaration to Congress on June 28, they made forty-seven emendations to the document. During the ensuing congressional debates of July 1-4, 1776, Congress adopted thirty-nine further revisions to the committee draft. (http://www.constitution.org) If anything was an attempt for engaging the hearts and minds of the 13 Colonies at the time, this document certainly succeeded in its mission. ...Their tools at the time were pen and ink and parchment. Although the final document would later be typeset with lead type for a printing press to distribute to the colonies, all of the original drafts were hand written. And today's enterprise complains about using "Review and Track Changes" at times.  Can you imagine the manual revision control process? or lack thereof?  Collaborative process? Time delays? • XSLT: Display unique rows of filtered XML recordset

  I've got a recordset that I'm filtering on a particular field (i.e. Manager ="Frannklin"). Now I'd like to group the results of that filtered recordset based on another field (Client). I can't seem to get Muenchian grouping to work right. Any thoughts? TIA! • What does pidgin mean by "Host unknown"?

  Pidgin is telling me my XMPP account was disconnected; the error message is "Host Unknown". What specifically does this indicate? Can it not find the server it's supposed to connect to (one in my office)? I can ping the server in the "Domain" account setting (under Basic) without a problem, and I even tried specifying an IP address in the "Connect server" account setting (under Advanced) without success.

• How do I prevent Pidgin from loading XMPP chat room history on join?

  In Pidgin, when I join a chat room, it loads the chat room history. iChat on the Mac has a preference in the Accounts section to set a variable amount of history to load, or disable loading history entirely. How do I do the same thing in Pidgin? Is there a preference somewhere that I've missed? The object is to have the chat room start fresh each day, so I'd also be fine with disabling chat room history entirely on the server if that's possible. But I didn't see that option either when I looked in Server Admin on the server. I found this list of XMPP room types, and it looks like creating a Temporary Room might be the best way to do this, but I don't want to have to create the room manually every morning. Right now I've got Pidgin set to auto-join the room when I log in; I want it to do that without loading history. EDIT: The XMPP multi-user chat spec referenced above also contains a section on managing history. And I got this to work by pulling up the XMPP Console plugin in Pidgin, copying the <presence /> stanza it sent when I joined the room, closing the room, pasting the stanza into the console, adding the <history /> element and sending it. When I opened the room again, I had no history. But it all came back the next time! So: how do I get Pidgin to send the <history /> stanza by default?

• DNS and DHCP not agreeing on an IP address

  I'm having a problem where our Windows Server 2003 domain controller assigns my Windows 7 computer one IP address (x.x.x.75) via DHCP, but reports another (x.x.x.84) via DNS. This causes some interesting behavior on the network. If I change my adapter settings to get IP and DNS addresses from DHCP, I can access the internet, but no one on our network can access my computer. If I change my IP manually to what DNS says it is, I lose my internet access, but everyone can get to my computer again. I know that we have some old, invalid reverse DNS pointers hanging around (a reverse lookup on an IP address often gives more than one result, usually not including the one that is correct), so that could be contributing, but my problem is recent, and the invalid reverse pointers have been around a long time. What's going on, and how do I fix it?

• Odd squid transparent redirect behavior

  This is the first time I've set up squid. It's running a redirect script that does some text search/replace on html pages, and then saves them to a location on the same machine on the nginx path - then issues the redirect to that URL (it's an art project :D). The relevant lines in squid.conf are http_port 3128 transparent redirect_program /etc/squid/jefferson_redirect.py The jefferson_redirect.py script is based on this script: http://gofedora.com/how-to-write-custom-redirector-rewritor-plugin-squid-python/ The issue: I'm getting strange http redirect behavior. • Specifying a Postfix Instance to send outbound email

  I have a CentOS 6.5 server running Postfix 2.6x (the default distribution) with five public IPv4 IPs bound to it. Each IP has DNS and rDNS set separately. Each uses a different hostname at a different domain. I have five Postfix instances, one bound to each IP, like this example: 192.168.34.104 red.example.com /etc/postfix 192.168.36.48 green.example.net /etc/postfix-green 192.168.36.49 pink.example.org /etc/postfix-pink 192.168.36.50 orange.example.info /etc/postfix-orange 192.168.36.51 blue.example.us /etc/postfix-blue I've tested each IP by telneting to port 25. Postfix answers and banners properly with the correct hostname. Email is received on all of these instances with no problems and is routed to the correct place. This setup, minus the final instance, has existed for a couple of years and works. I never bothered to set up outbound email to go through any but the main instance, however; there was no need. Now I need to send email from blue.example.us that actually leaves from that interface and IP, such that the Received headers show blue.example.us as the sending mailhost, so that SPF and DKIM validate, etc etc. The email that will be sent from blue.example.com is a feedback loop sent by a single shell account on the server (account5), an account that is dedicated to sending this email. The account receives the feedback loop emails from servers on other networks, saves the bodies of those emails, and then generates a new outbound email header, appends the saved body, and sends the email. It's sending by piping each email to sendmail -oi -t. We're doing it this way to mask the identities of the initial servers. The procmail script that processes these emails works correctly. However, I cannot configure this account to send email through the proper Postfix instance/IP/interface. The exact same account and script sends email through the main Postfix instance /etc/postfix without any issues. When I change MAIL_CONFIG to point to /etc/postfix-blue in either .bash_profile or the Procmail script that handles this email, though, I get this error: sendmail: fatal: User account5(###) is not allowed to submit mail I've read the manuals on Postfix.org, searched Google, and tried the suggestions in three previous answers here on ServerFault.com: Postfix - specify interface to deliver outbound mail on Postfix user is not allowed to submit mail Postfix rejects php mails I have been careful to stop and restart Postfix after each configuration change, and tested the results. Nothing has worked. The main postfix instance happily accepts outbound email from account5. The postfix-blue instance continues to reject email from account5 with the sendmail error above. As tempting as it is to blame machine hostility, I know that I must be missing something or doing something wrong. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what it might be? • How do you educate your teammates without seeming condescending or superior?

  I work with three other guys; I'll call them Adam, Brian, and Chris. Adam and Brian are bright guys. Give them a problem; they will figure out a way to solve it. When it comes to OOP, though, they know very little about it and aren't particularly interested in learning. Pure procedural code is their MO. Chris, on the other hand, is an OOP guy all the way -- and a cocky, condescending one at that. He is constantly criticizing the work Adam and Brian do and talking to me as if I must share his disdain for the two of them. When I say that Adam and Brian aren't interested in learning about OOP, I suspect Chris is the primary reason. This hasn't bothered me too much for the most part, but there have been times when, looking at some code Adam or Brian wrote, it has pained me to think about how a problem could have been solved so simply using inheritance or some other OOP concept instead of the unmaintainable mess of 1,000 lines of code that ended up being written instead. And now that the company is starting a rather ambitious new project, with Adam assigned to the task of getting the core functionality in place, I fear the result. Really, I just want to help these guys out. But I know that if I come across as just another holier-than-thou developer like Chris, it's going to be massively counterproductive. I've considered: Team code reviews -- everybody reviews everybody's code. This way no one person is really in a position to look down on anyone else; besides, I know I could learn plenty from the other members on the team as well. But this would be time-consuming, and with such a small team, I have trouble picturing it gaining much traction as a team practice. Periodic e-mails to the team -- this would entail me sending out an e-mail every now and then discussing some concept that, based on my observation, at least one team member would benefit from learning about. The downside to this approach is I do think it could easily make me come across as a self-appointed expert. Keeping a blog -- I already do this, actually; but so far my blog has been more about esoteric little programming tidbits than straightforward practical advice. And anyway, I suspect it would get old pretty fast if I were constantly telling my coworkers, "Hey guys, remember to check out my new blog post!" This question doesn't need to be specifically about OOP or any particular programming paradigm or technology. I just want to know: how have you found success in teaching new concepts to your coworkers without seeming like a condescending know-it-all? It's pretty clear to me there isn't going to be a sure-fire answer, but any helpful advice (including methods that have worked as well as those that have proved ineffective or even backfired) would be greatly appreciated. If I just do an "order by name desc" for example then the the whole grouping gets ignored. So how can I order within a group.
