• Use two networks at the same time?

  I want to use Ubuntu 10.10 Server in a classroom, a computer lab whose bandwidth is provided by a local cable ISP. That's no problem, though the school network has an IP printer that I want to use. I cannot reach the printer through the cable Internet. But, I have two network cards. How is it possible to use both networks at once? eth0 (static 192.168.1.254) is plugged into a four-port router, 192.168.1.1. On the public side of the four-port router is Internet provided by the cable company. I also have the classroom workstations plugged into a switch. The switch is plugged into the four-port router. The whole classroom is wired into the cable Internet. The other NIC, eth1, could it be plugged into an Ethernet jack in the wall? It uses the school network, and I might receive by DHCP an IP address like 10.140.10.100, with the printer on maybe 10.120.50.10. I was thinking about installing the printer on the server so that it could be shared with the workstations. But how does this work? Can I just plug eth1 into the school network and access both LANs? • Painfully Slow iPhone Backup?

  And now for something completely different... For the past couple of weeks, I've not been able to sync my iPhone.  What happens is that I plug it in to my computer, start the sync and two hours later, iTunes shows it's about 75% complete.  After some googling, I tried a few things like deleting old backups, changing some settings, etc, but nothing seemed to help.  Tonight I decided I'd try deleting all the photos and videos on my phone.  Sure enough, that did the trick.  I'm now able to successfully sync in a reasonable amount of time.

• How are components properly instantiated and used in XNA 4.0?

  I am creating a simple input component to hold on to actions and key states, and a short history of the last ten or so states. The idea is that everything that is interested in input will ask this component for the latest input, and I am wondering where I should create it. I am also wondering how I should create components that are specific to my game objects - I envision them as variables, but then how do their Update/Draw methods get called? What I'm trying to ask is, what are the best practices for adding components to the proper collections? Right now I've added my input component in the main Game class that XNA creates when everything is first initialized, saying something along the lines of this.Components.Add(new InputComponent(this)), which looks a little odd to me, and I'd still want to hang onto that reference so I can ask it things. An answer to my input component's dilemma is great, but also I'm guessing there is a right way to do this in general in XNA.

• How do I get my folders back on my desktop?

  Using the 12.04 version. This morning the Update Manager popped up, I clicked it and it said some items will be un-installed and some will be upgraded and new ones will be installed. I did it and restarted. On restart, I entered my password about 5 times and it said it was incorrect. I changed the shell from Gnome to Ubuntu and logged on then changed it back to Gnome and I was able to log on. However, all my folders on the screen are gone but they appear under Desktop in the Home folder. How do I get then back on the screen?

  After successfully installing Xubuntu 12.04.1 on my laptop, I decided to install Unity. That went OK but then I realized there was no themes. So then I installed the themes and artwork, and got a really bad surprise. My lightDM greeter was still Xubuntu like I wanted but the buttons where you choose the user are really tall and I have a purple computer as the icon above my computer name. How do I get back to the original Xubuntu configuration or edit the CSS while keeping Unity? I know where all of the files are but don't know which file to edit or which CSS property to modify. • How can I write byte[] to socket outputstream and specify the end of file?

  I've googled 2 days straight and I can't find how to do this. I have an open stream between client and server, and client will send a JSON string (encrypted to bytes) to the server each 3 to 5 seconds. How can I write to the Socket OutputStream so that I can read each JSON string in the server. I'm guessing I need to specify some kind of end of file or something, but can't find any info on how to achieve this.

• BizTalk Schema Validation

  Perhaps this one should be filed under:  Obvious Yesterday I created a new schema that is going to be used for a WCF receive.  The schema has a bunch of restrictions in it, with the intention that we'd validate incoming messages against the schema.  I'd never done message validation with BizTalk but I knew the XmlDisassembler component had an option for validating, so I figured it would be a piece of cake.  Sadly, that was not to be the case.  I deployed my artifacts and configured my receive location's XmlDisassembler with what I thought to be the correct document spec name.  I entered My.Project.Name.SchemaTypeName for the document spec and started running unit tests.  All of them failed with the following error logged in the event log: "WcfReceivePort_BizTalkWcfService/PurchaseOrderService" URI: "/BizTalkWcfService/PurchaseOrderService.svc" Reason: No Disassemble stage components can recognize the data. I went to the receive port and turned on tracking, submitted another message, then went to the admin console and saved the message.  It looked correct, but just to be sure, I manually validated it against the schema in my project.  As expected, it validated correctly. After a bit of thinking on this, I realized that I probably needed to fully qualify my document spec name, meaning, include the assembly name, as well as the type name.  So, I went back to the receive location and changed the document spec to: My.Project.Name.SchemaTypeName, My.Project.Name,Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=xxxxxxxxx I re-ran my unit tests and everything was working as expected.  So, note to self:  remember to include the assembly name when setting the document spec.  If you need an easy way to determine your schema name and assembly name, find your schema in the admin console and go to it's properties.  On the property screen, look at the Name and Assembly properties.  Your document spec will be "SchemaName, AssemblyName"

• GeoTrust SSL brand name used by re-sellers

  I feel like a I got the bait-and-switch from my web host provider since they advertise "GeoTrust SSL" for $99. I purchased it, thinking the certificate is issued from geotrust.com, but then I get an email from Comodo saying they are providing it. My host provider says they get a discount by using Comodo. I purchased the certificate with the understanding it would be issued by GeoTrust. I called the host provider and they said they usually expect it from GeoTrust, but someone from email support responded saying the product name is "GeoTrust SSL" but they use Comodo to get a discount. I think this is bogus and unfair trade practice. However, searching for "GeoTrust" on google brings up a ton of websites selling "GeoTrust" certificates. How can companies get away with this? Since the host provider is part of BBB I plan to inform my host to update the purchase page on their website to state clearly that... "This certicate is provided at a discount and may be issued by a provider other than GeoTrust.com, such as Comodo.com" Any feedback on this is appreciated.

• Enforcing Constraints Upon Data Documents of Various Formats

  This seems like the sort of problem that must have been solved elegantly long ago, but I haven't the foggiest how to google it and find it. Suppose you're maintaining a large legacy system, which has a large collection of data (tens of GB) of various formats, including XML and two different internal configuration formats. Suppose further that there are abstract rules governing the values these files may or may not contain. EXAMPLE: File A defines the raw, mathematical data pertaining to the aerodynamics of a car for consumption of the physics component of the system. File B contains certain values from File A in an easily accessible, XML hierarchy for consumption of a different component of the system. There exists, therefore, an abstract rule (or constraint) such that the values from File B must match the values from File A. This is probably the simplest constraint that can be specified, but in practice, the constraints between files can become very complicated indeed. What is the best method for managing these constraints between files of arbitrary formats, short of migrating it over to an RDBMS (which simply isn't feasible for the foreseeable future)? Has this problem been solved already? Will distribution and bundling be a problem? Can that make or break the language's success? In other words, I'm asking if writing a programing language written in Jython is a practical solution for production enviroments?

• EventDispatcher between an as and an fla?

  Hi everyone. I am making a fighting game in Flash and while I have everything running, I am missing something: a victory/loss screen. Logically, I know how to do it: if character.hp < 0 { character.dead = true; dispatchevent("death", event) } My problem is that I have no idea as to how to code it. I know I will use two classes and my two .fla files (unless I am wrong). I have two .fla files that are in play here: the Menu.fla file and the Arena.fla file. Menu.fla contains the entire navigation of the game, options, character selection screens, etc. and when it is time for the player to engage in battle, it loads the Arena.fla file, which contains only the backgrounds (depending on the selected stage) and for now is set to a length of one frame only. For Arena.fla, the real action happens in my classes, but logically, I would only need HP.as and Character.as. In Character.as, I have declared the following variable: var isDead:Boolean = false; //is character dead? In HP.as, believe I should have the following: if(currentHp<0) { currentHp = 0; character.isDead = true; //declared as var `character:Object;` EventDispatcher.dispatchEventListener("playerDead", playerDead); } And finally, in Arena.fla, I want to be able to detect the above-mentioned eventlistener and simply move on to a second frame which will display a message in the style of "PLAYER ONE HAS WON" or "PLAYER ONE HAS LOST" with a button that will allow me to go back to the character selection screen. This is the first part in which I am stuck: how do I detect the dispatched event listener in my main .fla file? Secondly, if the player clicks on the "CONTINUE" button, which displays regardless if the player has won or lost, how can my Menu.fla (which loads the Arena.swf) detect this click event, unload the game, and go back to the character selection screen? • Change Bitlocker to use the TPM plus a USB key and a PIN

  I have bitlocker running on Windows 7 (x86) on a Dell D630 laptop (it has a 1.2 TPM). It is running in transparent mode. I'd like to know how to configure it to use a PIN and a USB key as well, but I can't find anything that looks like it does this in the UI. Does anyone know how to do this? Do I have to remove bitlocker and re-enable it?? (This should be possible according to this - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitLocker_Drive_Encryption)

• RRAS DNS Entries from Windows Vista / 7 Clients

  How do I stop a Win 2003 RRAS server from sending it's own DNS info to the VPN Client? We have RRAS running on Win 2003 Server. The server has a fixed IP, but the RRAS is setup to use DHCP for assigning VPN client IPs. Our DHCP is setup to send 4 DNS server entries in this order: Internal DNS Server Backup Internal DNS Server External DNS Server Backup External DNS Server Here's the thing: the RRAS server seems to automatically send it's own DNS entries (from it's NICs) to the client first, and then the entries from DCHP are applied. But since the RRAS server has Internal DNS and Backup Internal DNS as it's own DNS entries, it sends these first, and when the DCHP DNS entries come down, only the ones not already added get added (just the externals). This results in the following DNS list on the VPN client: External DNS Server Backup External DNS Server Internal DNS Server Backup Internal DNS Server This is no good of course, because internal names will no longer resolve. How do I stop the RRAS server from sending it's own DNS info to the VPN Client? Note this doesn't seem to happen on WinXP - it gets the DNS servers direct from the DHCP in the correct order.

• Can compressing Program Files save space *and* give a significant boost to SSD performance?

  Considering solid-state disk space is still an expensive resource, compressing large folders has appeal. Thanks to VirtualStore, could Program Files be a case where it might even improve performance? Discovery In particular I have been reading: SSD and NTFS Compression Speed Increase? Does NTFS compression slow SSD/flash performance? Will somebody benchmark whole disk compression (HD,SSD) please? (may have to scroll up) The first link is particularly dreamy, but maybe head a little too far in the clouds. The third link has this sexy semi-log graph (logarithmic scale!). Quote (with notes): Using highly compressable data (IOmeter), you get at most a 30x performance increase [for reads], and at least a 49x performance DECREASE [for writes]. Assuming I interpreted and clarified that sentence correctly, this single user's benchmark has me incredibly interested. Although write performance tanks wretchedly, read performance still soars. It gave me an idea. Idea: VirtualStore It so happens that thanks to sanity saving security features introduced in Windows Vista, write access to certain folders such as Program Files is virtualized for non-administrator processes. Which means, in normal (non-elevated) usage, a program or game's attempt to write data to its install location in Program Files (which is perhaps a poor location) is redirected to %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\VirtualStore, somewhere entirely different. Thus, to my understanding, writes to Program Files should primarily only occur when installing an application. This makes compressing it not only a huge source of space gain, but also a potential candidate for performance gain. Testing The beginning of this post has me a bit timid, it suggests benchmarking NTFS compression on a whole drive is difficult because turning it off "doesn't decompress the objects". However it seems to me the compact command is perfectly capable of doing so for both drives and individual folders. Could it be only marking them for decompression the next time the OS reads from them? I need to find the answer before I begin my own testing.

• How do I locate the app generating this network traffic?

  I don't know what this process is doing on my computer. I run Windows 7 Professional w/ all its updates running current non-free antivirus. I only see it in Resource Monitor, where you can see the Network Service process connected to bitum.nnov.ru. When my PC's network traffic generating apps are idle, this process is using the most of all the idle processes using the network. • Why does this mod_rewrite rule 'not-match'? (big rewrite log included)

  I've got a scenario involving two domains: WordPress site hosted on domain1.com domain2.co.uk, simply redirecting users to domain1 via mod_rewrite This rule applies irrespective of whether www. is specified or not. (It's eventually removed from the URL, I'm a no-WWW fan.) There's nothing on domain2.co.uk at all except for an .htaccess with some mod_rewrite rules. However, I want to be able to allow users to be redirected to the correct article URI even if they specify the "wrong" URL (i.e., a 301 redirect preserving the stuff after the first forward slash). I'm currently achieving this with this ruleset: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^((www\.)?[^\.]+)\.domain2\.co\.uk [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain2\.co\.uk [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://domain1.com/$1 [R=301,L] This works but is uglier than I want it to be. I'm not a mod_rewrite zen master, but from what I can tell the top rule should match irrespective of whether www. is specified... But it doesn't. In order to catch www-less requests, I need the second RewriteCond. From the rewrite log, with just the first RewriteCond: [domain2.co.uk/sid#e200498][rid#e670168/initial] (3) [perdir /home/devnull/domains/domain2.co.uk/public_html/] strip per-dir prefix:   I know this has been asked in a subtle different way before (Change the folder that Windows Explorer starts at), but I want to open the Windows Explorer on a folder that is on my desktop in Windows XP. What I am doing currently is: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,/n,Desktop\Folder But it redirects me to "C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Desktop\Folder" as a subfolder of c:\ How it looks in the explorer: Desktop |->My Documents |->My Computer | |->c:\ | |->Documents and Settings | |-><username> | |->Desktop | |->Folder *Shortcut puts me here* |->Recycle Bin |->Folder *I want to be here* Any ideas?

• Intel P6100 CPU and Mobile Intel® HM55 Express Chipset

  I have an Asus K52F-BBR5 notebook that uses an Intel P6100 ( 2GHZ 15x multiplier) and HM55 Express Chipset. I'm looking to replace it's 3GB with 8GB. The Crucial database seems to indicate that a PC3-8500 CAS 7 and PC3-10666 CAS 9 will both work. I'm not up to date on the latest DDR3 nomencalature and I'm wondering which would provide better performance. The price difference is negligible. Drawing on past experiences from many many years ago I could make an argument for either based on sync/async bus speed arguments and CAS latency differences but the truth is I don't know enough about the HM55 chipset to know which would be the correct choice. Does anyone know the answer or point me to information that would help me make the choice? I'm pretty sure the performance difference will be somewhat negligible also but still I'd like to make the optimal choice.

  Hey, I am getting intermittent issues with my site. Pages often hang with huge loading times and sometimes fail to load. The current number of httpd procceses is 11. This does increase as the error persists and can rise up to 25+. Also, I am running Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. • Is there a stable email client or email client plugin that will support GMail-like conversations?

  Conversations in GMail are such an incredibly simple yet powerful way to look at mail. I get about twenty emails a day from various clients and I hate looking at a flat file of all emails, and I hate looking at "per client" email folders. With GMail I can just look at a specific conversation. I can see a few lines from each in the collapsed titles so that I can quickly remember what was said previously, and I can expand them if I need details or need to quote something. But I can't justify using GMail to handle sensitive work emails, and we need to be able to access all my emails offline. So what do I use?
