  • Why does my LED backlight laptop have a warning sticker about mercury?

    I recently purchased an Asus UL30Vt-X1, which according to the specs has an LED backlight for the screen. It definitely appears to be an LED backlight, but the laptop still has a sticker that the lamp in the display contains mercury. Why is this warning sticker there if it has an LED backlight? Edit: The exact wording from the sticker: "The lamp in this display contains mercury. Recycle or dispose according to local, state and federal law."

  • Why does hiberfil.sys come back from the dead on Windows 7?

    I have Windows 7 running on a small (40GB) partition, with 4GB ram. This means that the hiberfil.sys file created by Hibernate takes up a significant portion of the available diskspace. I would like to remove it. I am aware that I can disable Hibernate and remove hiberfil.sys by entering powercfg -h off in an elevated command prompt. This works -- the file is immediately removed, and after doing so, the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Power\HibernateEnabled key is (correctly) set to 0. However, the next time I reboot the PC, hiberfil.sys returns from the dead, Hibernate is reenabled, and that registry key has returned to 1. I'm pretty much at my wits' end with this. Almost everything I can find online related to removing the hiberfil.sys file simply suggests using powercfg to turn off hibernation, and that appears to work for just about everyone. But it just keeps coming back for me! (Like a vampire, sucking up my disk space.) I did find one other thread from someone who seems to have had the same issue, but none of the suggestions there worked for the original poster (or for me). Still, I have tried everything listed there, including: Disabling hybrid sleep Disabling Hibernate through the command prompt, through the Power Options GUI, and through both (in both orders) Manually changing the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Power\HibernateEnabled key Pretty much everything else I can think of! I do want to reiterate that I have no problem removing the file -- that works great. It just comes back after every reboot. I'm about ready to throw in the towel and just run a script on login to disable Hibernate each time, even though that seems like a crazily hacky "solution" . . . but I was hoping someone here could suggest something else, first.   • Server stops responding, can't find issue?

    I've had a pretty basic server up and running CentOS with webserver/database, and have noticed that it has locked up a few times in the middle of the night. It seems to happen randomly. When it locks up I can ssh in, (although it seems to hang once connected), but can't access cpanel/whm and have to reboot the server to get everything back up. Checking the messages log I see the below like clockwork every 5minutes 1 second, and then it just stops logging anything until I reboot. I can't seem to find any log showing any issue? Is there somewhere I can check to try to figure out what is happening? Could this be caused by CPU being maxed?   • Laptop charger dying after plugging in?

    My laptop charger's transformer has a green light on it that indicates that it's plugged in and working. When I plug it into the wall, the light goes on as expected. As soon as I plug it into the laptop, the light immediately turns off and my laptop doesn't get any charge. After that, the charger's light doesn't turn green again, even though it is still plugged into an outlet. I need to unplug it from the wall and wait a few minutes. It's strange - unplugging and immediately re-plugging it does not bring back the charge; I have to wait. Is this a charger issue or a laptop issue? Edit: Hooked the charger into a voltmeter and power went through fine. I guess this means that it's a short in my laptop itself. What are my options now?

  • Cisco 1841 Box and Watchguard XTM21-W

    I have never set one of these up before and need a little assistance. Right now we have a T1 line coming in from Sprint to a Cisco 1841 and then on to our router. However, when I plug the Cisco 1841 into Port 0 and the router into Port 3 it does not work. In Port 1 I have my management computer plugged in. We have one subnet and this must be easy but I cannot figure out how to make this work. When the firewall is plugged in then I get no internet or network access.

  • Do I need a web service for watershed.ustream.tv?

    I am looking to use the watershed.ustream.tv service for a one-time event. Do I really need my own web service? In the control panel it says “WARNING: the test web service will always approve all requests so do NOT use it in a production environment!”. I'm not looking for any advanced features, I'm not even using the chat functionality. All I want to do is broadcast a funeral service without any advertising. I've looked for support on the watershed site, but I can't find any. Any help or advise would be appreciated.

  • What should I know before considering a VPS or dedicated server?

    I have a plan for the future for an application and web service. The client will have an application that will send requests to a server-side Java back-end that will process requests, and the server should also be able to host a website, preferably on a WAMP setup (which is what I'm used to; very little *nix knowledge). Now, I cannot provide any hard stats because this is only a plan that's in a discussion stage. However, we do fully expect it will scale enough to need some type of dedicated hosting. My question is this: what types of things should I know about before looking into getting hosting? What should I be asking the hosting providers before I decide on a purchase? When is it appropriate to switch from a VPS to a fully dedicated server?

  • SSRS Errors "Use Local", even though I am

    I am at a loss. I posted this on SO, but think this is probably a better place. I have searched high and low and don't know what to do. I am running SQL Server Web Edition on Server 2008, which only supports local databases. I am trying to connect to localhost, but when I test my connection, I get this error. The feature: "The edition of Reporting Services that you are using requires that you use local SQL Server relational databases for report data sources and the report server database." is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services. The DB was upgraded from SQL Express and when I select @@version, it says it's Web Edition. I've tried rebooting and that seemed to fix it, but only for a little while.

  • CentOS 5.7 issues with iptables

    I'm trying to set up IPTables on a new CentOS server. This server will function as an FTP server that I need to be accessible from the outside, however, I want to lock down SSH to only accept internal IP connections. I need to allow SSH for 10.0.0.0/8 and 172.16.132.0/24. Below I've posted my /etc/sysconfig/iptables file. Whenever I apply this, I essentially lock myself out and I have to access it via console using Vsphere. Can somebody show me what I'm doing wrong?   • Can't access server sound card when vnc'd into ubuntu server

    I've set up my ubunutu 10 server with xfce, nxserver, and now tightvncserver so that I can control it remotely from my Windows 7 laptop. NX is working fine for remote access, but when I run (for example) exaile, no sound will be sent through the server's sound card. I installed tightvncserver and connected, but ran into the same problem. Exaile opens, sound isn't muted, I can see that sound cards are installed (via cat /proc/asound/cards), but I can't seem to get the remote sessions to access the server's sound card. Also, just to confirm that the sound card was working I hooked up a montior/keyboard to the server and opened a local xfce session. That worked fine. While I had the local session running, I was also able to open a remote session with NXClient and start exaile - which then successfully piped sound to the local card. After disconnecting the monitor/keyboard and moving the box back to its normal spot, though, I was not able to play sound via either an NX or VNC session. Does anyone have any suggestions? Surely it's possible to configure my remote sessions to pipe sound to the server's sound card, right? Or at least get xfce up and running without a monitor or keyboard but with access to the sound card so I can VNC into it? Thanks!

    I am dual booting for legacy reasons, and I have a 2nd internal drive that I would like to use from both XP and 7. Should I go with the standard NTFS? (will the secuirty features be an issue, with different SIDs from the different users) Should I go with FAT32? Should I try out the new exFAT? Also, I curently have two of my 3 drives as "dynamic disks" and 1 spaned volume created on them. (i did this from XP) Win7 can see them/it fine. Is this an ok thing to do?

  • Blinking motherboard power LED

    I was just rebuilding an old desktop PC to be used as a HTPC and the LED on the motherboard that indicates when there is power is blinking fairly rapidly. The only way I can get the machine to boot is to press the power button immediately after plugging it in, and even then I cannot make it into the BIOS. The power supply has more than enough juice to power all of the components, and is from a reputable manufacturer. The motherboard is an Asus and is about 4.5 years old. Is my power supply hosed? Or is it my motherboard?

  • Skype prevents computer from idling?

    When using Skype, it prevents the computer from idling, going into sleep mode and turning the monitor off. I notice on my laptop if I use a tool like Monitor Off to manually turn my monitor off, after about a minute, the monitor will come back on as if Skype has pressed a key or moved my mouse to exit out of that idle state. This also prevents other programs (such as Pidgin) from going idle as well, so it looks like I'm online 24/7... even though it should be going idle after 5 minutes of inactivity. Is there a way to circumvent this behavior in Skype?

    I tend to leave Skype calls on overnight, and for some reason Skype overrides my computer going idle. I have no idea why this is; it prevents Pidgin from idling, as well as some other programs, and prevents my computer from going into power-saving turning off the monitor. Anyway, is there a way to manually turn the monitor off on a laptop in Windows 7?

    Does anyone know of a inexpensive NAT router that has the ability to limit access to the Internet to a specific MAC address? I know the Linksys routers have a MAC filtering feature, but it is the opposite of what I need. It allows you to block access to a specific MAC address. I need something that will block all, but allow an exception. I'm dealing with some VOIP issues in my company's network, and I think the answer is to have a separate router on the network for my PBX to use. I want to make sure that other nodes are not allowed to access the Internet via this second router.

  • Setting up Apache directory root behavior

    I'm running Apache on a Windows machine for local testing and I'm new to it. Currently, if I navigate to localhost/ in a web browser, it will display an index.html page if one exists. Otherwise, it will display the directory listing. How can I make it so that navigating to a root directory will display more than index.html? What I need is so that if either: index.html, index.htm, or index.php exist, it will navigate to one of those. How can I disable showing directory roots? I would like it to return a 403 Forbidden error if no index page exists.
