  • CSS - Inheriting layered background images

    - by NNN
    CSS3 supports multiple background images, for example: foo { background-image: url(/i/image1.jpg), url(/i/image2.jpg); } I'd like to be able to add a secondary image to an element with a class though. So for example, say you have a nav menu. And each item has a background image. When a nav item is selected you want to layer on another background image. I do not see a way to 'add' a background image instead of redeclaring the whole background property. This is a pain because in order to do this with multi-backgrounds, you would have to write the base bg image over and over for each item if the items have unique images. Ideally I'd be able to do something like this: li { background: url(baseImage.jpg); } li.selected { background: url(selectedIndicator.jpg); } And have li.selected's end result appear the same if I did: li.selected { background: url(baseImage.jpg), url(selectedIndicator.jpg); } Update: I also tried the following with no luck (I believe backgrounds are not inherited..) li { background: url(baseImage.jpg), none; } li.selected { background: inherit, url(selectedIndicator.jpg); }

  • CSS * {margin: 0;padding: 0;} override

    - by StealthRT
    Hey all, i am in need of some help with figuring out how to override the "* {margin: 0;padding: 0;}" in my css. The reason why is that i have this css: .postcomments { width: 547px; padding: 5px 5px 5px 5px; margin: 0 0 5px 0;} .postcomments a { text-decoration: underline;} .postcomments ul { margin: 0; padding: 0; list-style-type: none;} .postcomments ul li { width: 547px; margin: 0 0 5px 0; padding: 0; list-style-type: none;} .postcomments .right { color: #474747; font-size: 11px; background: #fff url('http://www.nextbowluser.com/img/ucBG.gif') no-repeat top left; line-height: 17px; padding: 5px 0 0 0; width: 430px; position: relative; float: right; min-height: 50px;} .postcomments .right .bottom { padding: 0 5px 15px 5px; background: #fff url('http://www.nextbowluser.com/img/ucBG.gif') no-repeat bottom right; min-height: 50px;} .postcomments .arrow { left: -15px; top: 20px; position: absolute;} .avatar { border: none !important;} .postcomments .left {float: left; margin: 0 7px 0 0;} .postcomments .gravatar { background: #fff; width: 80px; height: 60px; margin: 0 0px 0 0; padding: 3px;} .postcomments .name { font-size: 11px; margin: 2px 0 0 0; color: #000;} .avatar { border: none !important;} and it displays just fine WITHOUT the * {margin: 0;padding: 0;}: 1st comment 2nd comment 3rd comment However, when i add that to the CSS, it makes the comments stack wrong: 1st comment 2nd comment 3rd comment I would just take out the * {margin: 0;padding: 0;} but some other things on the page needs that in order for that to be displayed correctly. So my question is, how can i override the {margin: 0;padding: 0;} for just that postcomments part of the page? Thanks! :o) David

  • Are There Specific CSS Selectors Targeting IE10?

    - by kunambi
    Since IE is getting rid of conditional comments in version 10, I'm in dire need to find a "CSS hack" targeting IE10 specifically. NB! It has to be the selector that's getting "hacked" and not the CSS-properties. In Mozilla, you can use: @-moz-document url-prefix() { h1 { color: red; } } While in Webkit, you usually do: @media screen and (-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio:0) { h1 { color: blue; } } How would I do something similar in IE10? • Getting overflow-y:scroll to work with fixed positioning html & css

    - by Vagabond_King
    I have a Jquery tools scrollable thats set to be fixed to the bottom of the browser window. Ideally i would just like to get a overflow-y:scroll; working for the page as a whole when the browser is < 700px. (so no content gets hidden, as its all fixed place). This feels like it should be simple but its causing me huge headaches. js solutions are fine at this point. Thanks in advance. <body> <div id="background"> <div id="fix_to_floor"> <div class="scrollable"> <div class="frame"> <div class="page" id="page1"> <div class="inner_page"> <h2>About Us</h2> <p>content</p> <div class="floor_items"> <img src="images/chair_n_hole.png" width="950" height="700" alt="Chair N Hole"> </div> </div> </div> <div class="page" id="page2"> <div class="inner_page"> <h2>page 2</h2> <p>content</p> <div class="floor_items"> <img src="images/spachairs.png" width="950" height="700" alt="Spachairs"> </div> </div> </div> <div class="page" id="page3"> <div class="inner_page"> <span class="copy"> <h2>Products</h2> </span> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </body> body { width: 100%; bottom:0px; position: fixed; } div#background{ height:948px; width:100%; background: #DDD url('../images/working_bg.jpg') repeat-x fixed bottom center; bottom:0px; overflow: scroll; } div#fix_to_floor{ position: fixed; margin: 0 auto; bottom:0px; height: 700px; width: 1700px; } .content img{ position: absolute; bottom: 0; } #content div.floor_items{ position: absolute; bottom:0; width:1700px; width: 950px; height: 700px; } /* **** specific page backgrounds */ /* page 3 - Products */ #page3 .inner_page{ background: url('../images/display.png') no-repeat scroll bottom center; z-index: 50; } #page3 .copy{ float: left; margin: 100px 300px; } #page1 div.floor_items img{ margin: 0 0 0 0px; } /********* SCROLLABLE *********/ div.scrollable{ bottom: 0; position: relative; /* required*/ overflow:hidden; width:1700px; height: 700px; left:0px; } /* needs to be huge and fixed. holds the content */ div.scrollable div.frame{ width: 20000em; position: absolute; height: 700px; } /* single item , must bve floated for horiz. scrolling*/ div.frame div.page{ float:left; width: 1700px; height: 700px; margin: 0; } div.page div.inner_page{ width:950px; height:700px; margin: 0 370px; /* border: 1px solid red;*/ }

  • possible to have a background color transition from color A to color B without repeating a pixel sti

    - by Andrew Heath
    For things like menubars and headers, a background color is nice. But a background color that gracefully transitions from say Blue to White is even nicer. I know this can be done by making a 1-pixel wide, X-pixel tall image file containing the desired fade and repeating it across the div, but does CSS have native support to just define colors and be done with it? Can any other language handle this?

  • image archive VS image strip

    - by DevA
    Hi, i've noticed that plenty of games / applications (very common on mobile builds) pack numerous images into an image strip. I figured that the advantages in this are making the program more tidy (file system - wise) and reducing (un)installation time. During the runtime of the application, the entire image strip is allocated and copied from FS to RAM. On the contrary, images can be stored in an image archive and unpacked during runtime to a number of image structures in RAM. The way I see it, the image strip approach is less efficient because of worse caching performance and because that even if the optimal rectangle packing algorithm is used, there will be empty spaces between the stored images in the strip, causing a waste of RAM. What are the advantages in using an image strip over using an image archive file?

  • Getting this CSS to work in IE6

    - by jerrygarciuh
    Hi folks, Working on this page: http://www.karlsenner.dreamhosters.com/about.php and having trouble with the navigation in IE6. It validates as XHTML 1.0 Transitional. Works great in FF, IE 8, Chrome, and Windows Safari. In IE6 and Opera 10 the drop menus appear too high. I tried adding in the different versions of http://code.google.com/p/ie7-js/ but it did not solve the issue in IE. The CSS looks like this: #wrapper { position: relative; display: block; background-color: inherit; margin: 0px auto; padding: 0; width: 900px; min-height: 900px; } #nav {} .navImage { position:relative; display:inline; height:102px; /* added in hopes of helping IE position but no dice */ } .subMenu { position:absolute; z-index:10; background-color:#FFF; top: 14px; left:0; } .subMenu a:link, .subMenu a:visited, .subMenu a:active{ display:block; width:90%; padding:6px; margin:0; color:#3CF; font-family:Tahoma, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size:14px; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } .subMenu a:hover{ display:block; width:90%; padding:6px; margin:0; color:#3CF; background-color:#CCC; font-family:Tahoma, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size:14px; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } jQuery rollovers: $('#navcompany').hover(function () { $('#companyMenu').css('display', 'block'); $('#companyImg').attr('src','g/nav/company_over.gif'); }, function () { $('#companyMenu').css('display', 'none'); $('#companyImg').attr('src','g/nav/company.gif'); }); And one of the cells. Since the menu is coming out of PHP and IE was not respecting the widths I just use PHP to get the nav image widths and write them to styles on the fly. Solved the width issue as IE acted like they should inherit their width from the wrapper. This may be a clue as to why they don't appear below their nav images but I can't sort it. <div id="navcompany" class="navImage" style="width:128px"> <a href="about.php"> <img src="g/nav/company_over.gif" name="companyImg" width="128" height="102" border="0" id="companyImg" alt="company" /> </a> <div id="companyMenu" class="subMenu" style="display:none; width:128px"> <a href="about.php">About us</a> <a href="location.php">Our location</a> </div> </div> Any advice greatly appreciated! • CSS Fluid Grid Layout Problem

    - by Fuego DeBassi
    I have a max-width em based container for my layout. Within it I have many floated fixed width boxes, at 230px to be exact. At the max-width the container will expand to 90em's. This fit's 6 boxes per line perfectly. As the window sizes down and boxes are bumped to lower rows it leaves an ugly gap with the navigation above. I would like to force the container of the boxes to center them at all times. To illustrate: At full width: http://cl.ly/7393a462f44b8315aaba At smaller width: http://cl.ly/ff48a18d39c4f57c3513 How I would like smaller width to work: http://cl.ly/ae9c3fd04df515253b2d (Photoshoped) My markup looks like this: Biodesign Fusce massa felis, laoreet eu elementum sit amet, aliquam ut magna. • CSS import or multiple CSS files

    - by David H
    I originally wanted to include a .css in my HTML doc that loads multiple other .css files in order to divide up some chunks of code for development purposes. I have created a test page: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title>The Recipe Site</title> <link rel='stylesheet' href='/css/main.css'> <link rel='stylesheet' href='/css/site_header.css'> <!-- Let google host jQuery for us, maybeb replace with their api --> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.1/jquery.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="/js/main.js"></script> </head> <body> <div id="site_container"> <div id="site_header"><?php include_once($r->base_dir . "inc/site_header.inc.php"); ?><!-- Include File, Update on ajax request. --></div> <div id="site_content"> Some main content. </div> <div id="site_footer"><?php include_once($r->base_dir . "inc/site_footer.inc.php"); ?><!-- Include File, Update on ajax request. --></div> </div> </body> </html> File: /css/main.css /* Reset Default Padding & Margin */ * { margin: 0; padding: 0; border: 0; } /* Set Our Float Classes */ .clear { clear: both; } .right { float: right; } .left { float: left; } /* Setup the main body/site container */ body { background: url(/images/wallpaper.png) repeat; color: #000000; text-align: center; font: 62.5%/1.5 "Lucida Grande", "Lucida Sans", Tahoma, Verdana, sans-serif; } site_container { background-color: #FFFFFF; height: 100%; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: left; width: 100%; } /* Some style sheet includes / / @import "/css/site_header.css"; */ /* Default Font Sizes */ h1 { font-size: 2.2em; } h2 { font-size: 2.0em; } h3 { font-size: 1.8em; } h4 { font-size: 1.6em; } h5 { font-size: 1.4em; } p { font-size: 1.2em; } /* Default Form Layout */ input.text { padding: 3px; border: 1px solid #999999; } /* Default Table Reset */ table { border-spacing: 0; border-collapse: collapse; } td{ text-align: left; font-weight: normal; } /* Cause not all browsers know what HTML5 is... */ header { display:block;} footer { display:block;} and now the file: /css/site_header.css: site_header { background-color: #c0c0c0; height: 100px; position: absolute; top: 100px; width: 100%; } Problem: When I use the above code, the site_header div does not have any formatting/background. When I remove the link line from the HTML doc for site_header.css and instead use an @import url("/css/site_header.css"); in my main.css file, the same results -- nothing gets rendered for for the same div. Now when I take the CSS markup from site_header.css and add it to main.css, the div gets rendered fine... So I am wondering if having multiple css files is somehow not working... or maybe having that css markup at the end of my previous css is somehow conflicting, though I cannot find a reason why it would.

  • Cron not able to succesfully change background

    - by Solenoid
    I'm running 12.04 with a custom XML background (modification on Day of Ubuntu) that changes based on time of day. I've noticed that there's a significant delay between when the changes are scheduled to take place in the XML file and when they actually show up on the background. I've also noticed that when I resume from suspend I don't get the correct background image either. I've found that cycling the wallpaper manually will fix this, and I've written a script to automate the process. If I execute the script manually it works fine. However, when I schedule the script to run in cron, cron doesn't change the background. To make sure that the script was being run properly by cron, I had it create a directory in my home folder after running the background change, and the directory is created successfully, so I know cron is running and executing the script. My script: #!/bin/bash sleep 5 gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri file:///home/zak/Pictures/Wallpaper/DOU2.xml sleep 1 gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri file:///home/zak/Pictures/Wallpaper/DOU.xml sleep 1 mkdir /home/zak/iscronworking exit Is cron just not able to access gsettings? The job is on my user crontab so it shouldn't be running as root. Alternately, is there any way to make Precise play nicely with XML wallpaper?

  • Css trick to conjoin divs.

    - by Jronny
    Is there a way we could conjoin three divs together? Hello <div class="mainContainer"> <div class="LeftDiv"></div> <div class="CenterDiv"> <input id="txtTest" type="text"/> </div> <div class="RightDiv"></div> </div> World! what we need here is to present the code this way: Hello<*LeftDiv*><*CenterDiv with the textbox*><*RightDiv*>World I tried to use float:left on LeftDiv, CenterDiv and RightDiv but the css also affects the mainContainer. I also need to set the LeftDiv's and RightDiv's height and width on the css but I just can't do it without the float. Thanks in advance. Edit: Added question - when LeftDiv, CenterDiv and RightDiv are floated-left, why is mainContainer affected? i just want to have the three inner divs conjoined without affecting the parent div's behavior...

  • css display:table first column too wide

    - by Mestore
    I have a css table setup like this: <div class='table'> <div> <span>name</span> <span>details</span> </div> </div> The css for the table is: .table{ display:table; width:100%; } .table div{ text-align:right; display:table-row; border-collapse: separate; border-spacing: 0px; } .table div span:first-child { text-align:right; } .table div span { vertical-align:top; text-align:left; display:table-cell; padding:2px 10px; } As it stands the two columns are split evenly between the space occupied by the width of the table. I'm trying to get the first column only to be as wide as is needed by the text occupying it's cells The table is an unknown width, as are the columns/cells.

  • Recognize objects in image

    - by DoomStone
    Hello I am in the process of doing a school project, where we have a robot driving on the ground in between Flamingo plates. We need to create an algorithm that can identify the locations of these plates, so we can create paths around them (We are using A Star for that). So far have we worked with AForged Library and we have created the following class, the only problem with this is that when it create the rectangles dose it not take in account that the plates are not always parallel with the camera border, and it that case will it just create a rectangle that cover the whole plate. So we need to some way find the rotation on the object, or another way to identify this. I have create an image that might help explain this Image the describe the problem: http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/9835/imagerectangle.png Any help on how I can do this would be greatly appreciated. • CSS - Overlaying one image on top of another

    - by Jack W-H
    Hey folks! I can't best describe this in words, so I'll show you with pictures. Here's how my designer intends the Gravatar images to look in the sidebar of our site: Here's the overlay image I made (screenshotted from Photoshop): Here's how it looks right now... Not quite ideal, I think you'll agree. This is the CSS code I am using: .gravatarsidebar { float:left; padding:0px; width:70px; } .gravataroverlay { width:68px; height:68px; background-image: url('http://localhost:8888/images/gravataroverlay.png'); } And here's the XHTML (and a sprinkle of PHP to fetch the Gravatar based on the user's email address, which is fetched from our database): <div class="gravataroverlay"></div> <div class="gravatarsidebar"> <?php $gravatar_link = 'http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/' . md5($email) . '?s=68'; echo '<img src="' . $gravatar_link . '" alt="Gravatar" />'; ?> </div> So what can I do? I can't use relative positioning as it makes the word 'Search' in the div below stay moved to the right. Thanks for your help! Jack

  • Fixed div background

    - by Fahad
    I want to create a layout where I want to display an image to the left and content on the right. The image should stay constant when the content scrolls. The css I'm using: <style type="text/css"> html, body { margin:0; padding:0; } #page-container { margin:auto; width:900px; background-color:Black; background-image:url('images/desired_layout.png'); background-attachment: fixed; background-repeat:no-repeat; } #main-image { float:left; width:250px; height:687px; background-image:url('images/desired_layout.png'); background-attachment:fixed; background-repeat:no-repeat; } #content { margin-left:250px; background-color:Olive; height:800px; width:650px; } </style> The HTML: <div id="page-container"> <div id="main-image"></div> <div id="content"></div> </div> Alot of time on this site and I have understood that background-attachment:fixed positions the image in the entire viewport and not the element it is applied to. My question is how do I go about creating that kind of layout? I do not want to give that image as a background image, as if the window is resized, it might get hidden. I want scrollbars to appear if the window size is less than 900px( my page width) so that the image can be viewed at all times. That happens with this code, however I would like the image to start at my element instead. How do I go about doing this?? Thanks in Advance :)

    I'm struggling geting my website to test fully positive in IE, the following problems keep arising, only in IE; My '#grey box' div displaying 200px to the left out of place, and it seems to move with the adjustment of the IE window size, does this in no other browsers, just IE. It creates this unnecessary horizontal scroll. I have the width set to pretty large, but have "overflow: hidden" and again, works fine across except for IE. On a few of my pages, the footer is somewhat cropped and out of place. My biggest concern is the particular page's CSS, pasted below. #container { width : 1265px; height : 920px; background-color : #addceb; overflow : hidden; padding : 0; } #logo { font-size : 38px; height : 167px; width : 427px; margin-left : 435px; padding-top : 20px; margin-bottom : -10px; margin-top: 10px; border : none; } #menunav { width : 100%; background-image : url(../imagesnew/menunav.png); background-repeat : repeat-x; height : 40px; text-align : center; font-size : 14px; font-family : Palatino Linotype, Book Antiqua, Palatino, FreeSerif, serif; overflow : auto; } #menunav ul { list-style-type : none; background-image : url(); height : 40px; width : 800px; margin : auto; } #menunav ul a { background-image : url(); background-repeat : no-repeat; background-position : right; padding-right : 32px; padding-left : 15px; display : block; line-height : 30px; text-decoration : none; font-size : 14px; } #mainbox { position : relative; background-image : url(../premiumslideimgs/premiumbox.png); background-repeat : no-repeat; width : 900px; height : 800px; margin-left : 16%; top : 22px; padding-top : 5px; overflow : hidden; } #simplegallery1 { position : absolute; left : 50%; width : 800px; height : 800px; margin-top : 44px; margin-bottom: -44px; margin-bottom : 240px; margin-left : -397px; background-color : #a1bbfe; padding-top : 0; } #textbelowbox { position : absolute; width : 830px; height : 45px; margin-left : 209px; margin-bottom : 240px; margin-top : -240px; overflow : hidden; } #footer { background-image : url(../imagesnew/footerimg.png); background-repeat : no-repeat; background-position : right; height : 275px; margin-top : -285px; } a:hover { color : #addceb; } #right { float : right; margin-top : 3px; } #left { float : left; margin-left : 30px; } body { font-family : Palatino Linotype, Book Antiqua, Palatino, FreeSerif, serif; background-color : #addceb; margin : 0; padding : 0; } #textabovebox { width : 920px; position : absolute; margin-left : 228px; margin-bottom : 80px; margin-top : 38px; z-index : 2000; font-family : Palatino Linotype, Book Antiqua, Palatino, FreeSerif, serif; } a.submenu:hover { color : #333; font-weight : bolder; } #dialog { font-size : 12px; } #greybox { position : absolute; width : 275px; height : 465px; margin-left : 715px; margin-top : 80px; overflow : hidden; z-index : 2000; } ul { background-image : url(); height : 40px; width : 800px; margin : auto; } ul a { background-image : url(); background-repeat : no-repeat; background-position : right; padding-right : 32px; padding-left : 15px; display : block; line-height : 30px; text-decoration : none; font-size : 14px; } li { float : left; } a:link { color : #ffffff; text-decoration : none; } a:visited { color : #ffffff; text-decoration : none; } a:active { color : #ffffff; text-decoration : none; } a:hover { color : #addceb; } #right { float : right; margin-top : 3px; } #left { float : left; margin-left : 30px; } #text { float : left; margin-left : 30px; } body { font-family : Palatino Linotype, Book Antiqua, Palatino, FreeSerif, serif; padding : 0; margin : 0; } body { background-color : #addceb; } a.submenu:link { color : #333333; } a.submenu:active { color : #333333; } a.submenu:visited { color : #333333; } a.submenu:hover { color : #333333; font-weight : bolder; } { margin: 0; padding: 0; } Please help if you can, thanks a lot.

  • Help with CSS - getting an element to fill 100% of the remaining vertical space

    - by Jack W-H
    Hi folks I'd consider myself a reasonable standard CSS/XHTML chap but I'm pretty baffled by this. The problem is available here: http://furnace.howcode.com - (note that the site is still in development, most stuff doesn't work, and it's likely to change fairly quickly as it is updated often). Basically I've got a fluid layout that needs to work in the same proportions on any resolution. Here's a screenshot of how the designer invisioned it (I apologise for my Paint-tool anotations): I want the tabs and the search box to STAY at the top of Col2, whilst there should be a scrollable area beneath it where the results are returned. I want NO vertical viewport scrolling, only within the 100%-height area thingy. My problem is this. If you take a look at http://furnace.howcode.com, you'll see that I've got a bit of a problem. I've made a placeholder black-background div which I will turn into the Tabs shortly. However I want the Col2 div to float BENEATH this and fill 100% of the remaining vertical height (i.e. go to the bottom of the screen, nomatter what the resolution is) and Col3 to be in the place where Col2 currently has been put (it normally is there automatically, when Col2 is in the right place!). I hope that makes sense. If you need to me to clarify please just ask. Cheers! Jack
