  I'm just curious as to what a reasonable number of threads is for a simple 2D mmo in Java. Is it reasonable to have two threads per connection, one for the input stream and one for the output stream? The reason I ask is because I use a blocking method on the input stream, and a workaround seems unnecessarily complex if I were to try to get around it without adding threads. This is mostly for my own edification; I don't expect to have 5 million people playing it ever, or even 5, but I'm wondering what a good scalable solution is, and if this is reasonable for a small server (<30 connections).

• I want to use Windows 8 from within Ubuntu

  I have a CD of windows 8. I bought a laptop which has a windows 7 OS but I removed it to use Ubuntu 12.04 but for some of the programs I need Windows 8 without separate partitions. I heard about vmware and how it can help to run the OS insideanother. As I have only allocated 50GB for Ubuntu 12.04 64bit, which I am using right now, I want to use windows 8 from within my Ubuntu 12.04. Could anyone help? Thank you very much.

• No Sound via HDMI

  I have ubuntu installed on a Acer aspire revo 3700 intel atom processor with nvidia ion graphics this is plugged into a celcus 32 inch TV via HDMI (1080p). The video driver shows as an nvidia which I can select. I have set the sound to play via HDMI and the output to HDMI but get no sound. I have tried a sony 1080i TV with the box but get eratic results with the graphics, but the sound picks up straight away that is there is no need to select it. The graphics on the celcus TV work but I get a dialog box showing loads of different resolutions and frequencies which I have to close manually, these appear to be attempts to set different resolutions for the TV. Am I missing some sort of screen/sound driver, if so does anyone know what might support the celcus 32 inch (1080p) tv?

• Test your internet connection - Emtel Mobile Internet

  After yesterday's report on Emtel Fixed Broadband (I'm still wondering where the 'fixed' part is), I did the same tests on Emtel Mobile Internet. For this I'm using the Huawei E169G HSDPA USB stick, connected to the same machine. Actually, this is my fail-safe internet connection and the system automatically switches between them if a problem, let's say timeout, etc. has been detected on the main line. For better comparison I used exactly the same servers on Speedtest.net. The results Following are the results of Rose Hill (hosted by Emtel) and respectively Frankfurt, Germany (hosted by Vodafone DE): Speedtest.net result of 31.05.2013 between Flic en Flac and Rose Hill, Mauritius (Emtel - Mobile Internet) Speedtest.net result of 31.05.2013 between Flic en Flac and Frankfurt, Germany (Emtel - Mobile Internet) As you might easily see, there is a big difference in speed between national and international connections. More interestingly are the results related to the download and upload ratio. I'm not sure whether connections over Emtel Mobile Internet are asymmetric or symmetric like the Fixed Broadband. Might be interesting to find out. The first test result actually might give us a clue that the connection could be asymmetric with a ratio of 3:1 but again I'm not sure. I'll find out and post an update on this. It depends on network coverage Later today I was on tour with my tablet, a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (model GT-P7500) running on Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and did some more tests using the Speedtest.net app. The results are actually as expected and in areas with better network coverage you will get better results after all. At least, as long as you stay inside the national networks. For anything abroad, it doesn't really matter. But see for yourselves: Speedtest.net result of 31.05.2013 between Cascavelle and servers in Rose Hill, Mauritius (Emtel - Mobile Internet), Port Louis, Mauritius and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia It's rather shocking and frustrating to see how the speed on international destinations goes down. And the full capability of the tablet's integrated modem (HSDPA: 21 Mbps; HSUPA: 5.76 Mbps) isn't used, too. I guess, this demands more tests in other areas of the island, like Ebene, Pailles or Port Louis. I'll keep you updated... The question remains: Alternatives? After the publication of the test results on Fixed Broadband I had some exchange with others on Facebook. Sadly, it seems that there are really no alternatives to what Emtel is offering at the moment. There are the various internet packages by Mauritius Telecom feat. Orange, like ADSL, MyT and Mobile Internet, and there is Bharat Telecom with their Bees offer which is currently limited to Ebene and parts of Quatre Bornes.

  I'm currently developing a Flash game like 'Tiny Wings'. I have a lot of work done, but i'm currently working on placing the items ( coins and obstacles ) on the terrain. My player it is moving on a auto-generated terrain (based on Emanuele Feronato's tutorials) so every time the player's x position is greater than (screenWidth + x) another hill is generated and so on. I'm currently having problems placing the items in a correct angle and put 5 or more items together on a hill. Could you please help me with this? Thanks, Regards. • IIS7.5 Domain Account Application Pool Identity for SQL Server Authentication

  In Windows Server 2003/IIS6 land we typically create an app pool that runs as the identity of an AD account created with minimal privileges simply for that purpose. This same domain user would also be granted access to SQL Server so that any ASP.NET application in that app pool would be able to connect to SQL Server with Integrated Security=SSPI. We are making a brave move to the world of Windows Server 2008 R2/IIS7.5 and are looking to replicate this model, but I am struggling with how to make the application pool in IIS7.5 run as the identity of an AD account? I know this sounds simple and hopefully it is, but my attempts so far have been fruitless. Should the application pool identity be a 'Custom account' for a domain account? Does the domain account need to be added to any groups?

• Office communicator voice chat

  My company recently mandated a switch from Skype to Office Communicator for IM / voice chat. While Skype was never the be all and end all of VOIP, it was at least usable. With Communicator, if one person is talking, everyone else is basically silent (or as good as) so a normal conversation is impossible. No one can interrupt anyone else, if two people start talking at once it's a crap shoot who gets to be heard and often the person who is inaudible doesn't know it. There do not seem to be any client side settings to fix this. Is there anything that can be done server side or is it just rubbish?

  I'm getting a new development laptop soon, and I'm thinking of using TrueCrypt to encrypt the whole disk. What kind of performance drop can I expect? 10%? 30%? more? Also, assuming the workload has an effect, would compiling/using Visual Studio be affected much? I cannot seem to find anything like this on the web.

• Setting page parent to a private page in Wordpress 2.8

  I have a site developed in Wordpress 2.7 that makes extensive use of private pages as the parents of public pages. The private pages are never meant to be seen, they are just there to act as containers for the other pages. Since upgrading to Wordpress 2.8, it seems this isn't possible any more. Private pages no long show up in the drop box of pages I can use as a parent, and if I edit a page with a private parent, it loses the parenting information. Is there anything I can do about this?

• Bandwidth sizing for simultaneous RDP sessions

  We're doing some DR scenario planning which will require up to 150 users to RDP into their desktop machines (mainly running Windows XP) over our VPN. We have a 2mbit uncontended internet connection at the moment but there's scope to upgrade this and also to use a secondary SDSL line to give us more bandwidth. Typical bandwidth figures I've seen suggest to plan for 64kbps per session, which works out to 9.6mbps in total. I'd like to know: Does anyone have any real-world data which would support these estimates? Are there any operational 'gotcha's that we need to be aware of? Thanks!

• Good option for a transparent internet gateway on Mac OS X

  Hi I have a small network of Mac systems, and would like to add some internal monitoring of our internet usage, which has recently begun to climb. I would like to configure one of the machines as an internet gateway, and install some monitoring software that could provide graph indications of network usage by machine. The machine would then double as a workstation and as the internet gateway. I can manually configure the machines on the network to use it as a gateway, and would prefer to avoid an explicit http proxy (although it is an option if necessary). What software would serverfault users recommend to provide simple, easily configurable and maintainable network monitoring on Mac OS 10.5.7 (non-server)? The simplest requirement is monitor usage by IP Address, but additional tracking (e.g. destination, protocol, etc) would be useful.

• iTunes not recognizing music from NAS

  At the current moment I have a SONOS system running through my house. The SONOS takes music directly from a NAS. I want to be able to get iTunes to be able to play music from the NAS without copying them to my local drive. At the moment, the iTunes has been able to recognise the NAS, but it is reading the music from a file within the NAS called Qmultimedia. All of my music is inside a "music" folder that SONOS is using.

• How do I get my server to recognise a change in users?

  I'm new in post running a small charity. As a result I've inherited a system from the previous manager that was poorly run. In my enthusiasm to change login details etc. I appear to have killed my microsoft outlook account. When trying to access outlook it prompts me for my user name, domain name and password - which I'm obviously not filling in correctly because it's not accepting my answers. Is there a way to determine that information from the server side? I have access to the server and the staff computers.

• Private key authentication with pam_ldap

  I'd like to set up pam_ldap on some of our servers so that we can centrally manage who has access to which server, and easily revoke access if e.g. someone leaves the company. I've done some research and got this working. Hooray! However I'd also like to be able to use public-private key logins - i.e. allow users to store their public keys in the LDAP directory and have these work for logins too. I can't find any documentation about being able to do this, but I also can't find any reasons that it shouldn't be possible. Is there a way to do it, or is there some fundamental reason that it won't work?

• Internet Explorer 9 auto "feeling lucky" for gmail bing search

  When Im at school and using school computers, i have to use has IE9. When I want to access my gmail, I type in "gmail" in the URL bar, and thus IE9 does a bing search. The page half loads (As in, loads just about every thing but the search results) and then opens my gmail, kinda like google's "i'm feeling lucky". My question is this: Why? IE9 doesn't have the URL of gmail, as i can watch the bing search load, and then the url changes to gmail, and it only happens for Gmail, having tired with searching Google and Facebook in the same method. The computer is running Windows 7 with Windows Aero disabled, and limited account privileges. While its a cool thing, I would like to known what causes it to happen. Thanks

• Batch renaming 32000 files - splitting into multiple subdirectories

  I've got a web server which has files uploaded to it. There is a script which assigns them numeric IDs and stores them in a corresponding subdirectory. I've now got 32000 of these uploads and that's too many for the server to handle in one directory. The script I'm using does have a way to "namespace" uploads so that ID 12345 - instead of sitting in /files/12345 - would sit in /files/namespaced/000/012/345. The code can deal with this just fine, but I now have 32000 subdirectories in the wrong naming style. What's the easiest way to go through my existing files and put them in the right place?

• Windows 7 changes desktop icon location when switching from External Monitor to Internal Monitor (laptop)

  I have a Windows 7 Laptop, and lately its been acting really weird with my 1080p Monitor. When I get home from school, Ill plug my screen in, and close my laptop lid (which makes the laptop treat the Monitor as the primary and only screen). However it will move my desktop icons! This also happens when I remove / unplug the screen, as shown in the pictures. I hate this, as Im the kinda person who's use to every icon being in a set spot, and so am use to their location. Its a massive hassle to try and move the icons back to their original spot. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? • How to fix a damaged/corrupted NTFS filesystem/partition without losing the data on it?

  I was going to install Fedora 15 along side my Windows 7 Starter on my Acer Apire One D255E and at some point during the resizing of the NTFS partition (the one with Windows on it) the setup failed. Now I cannot access this partition from any OS. When I tried to access it from a Fedora install running on a USB flashdrive I get this error: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 12: Failed to read last sector (452534271): Invalid argument HINTS: Either the volume is a RAID/LDM but it wasn't setup yet, or it was not setup correctly (e.g. by not using mdadm --build ...), or a wrong device is tried to be mounted, or the partition table is corrupt (partition is smaller than NTFS), or the NTFS boot sector is corrupt (NTFS size is not valid). Failed to mount '/dev/sda5': Invalid argument The device '/dev/sda5' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS. Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around? It doesn't make a lot of sense to me but I was really hoping it would to someone and they can give me a way to restore the partition without losing everything on it (I have a lot of important notes from various classes on there)? • Installing MySQL on Ubuntu Natty with Shell Script

  I'm trying to install MySQL on Ubuntu Natty from a shell script. However, I keep running into one major issue: when I try to define the password outside of the shell script. Below is the code to my shell script (which I have saved in /etc/init.d/install_mysql: export DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive echo mysql-server-5.1 mysql-server/root_password password $dbpass | debconf-set-selections echo mysql-server-5.1 mysql-server/root_password_again password $dbpass | debconf-set-selections apt-get -y install mysql-server So what I enter in the terminal is: dbpass="mysqlpass" chmod +x /etc/init.d/install_mysql /etc/init.d/install_mysql MySQL installs, but it installs without a password, so I can just do something like mysql -uroot to access mysql (which I don't want). The funny thing is if I put the password in the shell script as regular text, it works ok. So if I my install script is as follows, everything works (i.e. I must specify a password to access mysql): export DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive echo mysql-server-5.1 mysql-server/root_password password mysqlpass | debconf-set-selections echo mysql-server-5.1 mysql-server/root_password_again password mysqlpass | debconf-set-selections apt-get -y install mysql-server Is there a way I can use a shell script variable to define my password in the shell script, instead of entering the password literally?! Thanks in advance. EDIT I've found the answer to this. • Windows XP can use a wired network port, but MacBook (OS X) fails on the same port

  I wired the Cat5 in my house seven years ago. The wired ports have worked fine with both my Windows XP laptop and MacBook. My wireless network also works fine, but I like to use wired occasionally. One of the Cat5 runs wasn't terminated with a jack, so I recently terminated this wire with a port/jack on the wall end and a standard Cat5 plug on the end that plugs into my router. This is the same setup as my other runs. Unfortunately, the MacBook isn't working well with the new wired port. The OS X Network System Preferences show the IP, Subnet, Router, etc., and everything looks fine. A "netstat -ibd" shows no errors or dropped packets. However, when I open a page in Safari, the status says "Contacting 'www.google.com'" and appears to hang. If I wait for a couple minutes, part of the Google page starts to display, but it is still not the full page load. When I use a Windows XP laptop on the same wired port, everything works fine. An internet speed test shows good results and all web pages load fine. A "netstat -e" under Windows shows no errors. I've used a Cat5 tester, and the cable tests fine (wires 1-8 light up in sequence). I've replaced both the port/jack and the connector twice to make sure I wired things correctly. I'd really like this Cat5 to work with the MacBook (and I'm trying to avoid running a new length of cable). Any ideas what the problem could be?
