• Good 3D Game Engine for the Horror Genre [on hold]

  I am starting to think about and design (pencil drawings) a simple, horror game. I'm in need of a good engine which supports features like Dynamic Lighting (for a characters flashlight) and dynamic shadows. My first choice was obviously Unity3D, as its free and is (supposedly) the easiest to use. However, I believe that a lot of features are locked for the Pro version (a $1500 investment). Is there any good, free engines that support dynamic events? I have read a lot of posts recommending the Source engine but I don't want to make a mod, I would like to make a fully featured standalone game. I'm not looking for opinions on "Which engine you prefer" or "Which engine do you use", all I would like is to be presented with the facts. -James

• How do I prevent a ManyToManyField('self') from linked an object to itself?

  Consider this model (simplified for this question): class SecretAgentName(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=100) aliases = ManyToManyField('self') I have three names, "James Bond", "007" and "Jason Bourne". "James Bond" and "007" are aliases of each other. This works exactly like I want it to, except for the fact that every instance can also be an alias of itself. This I want to prevent. So, there can be many SecretAgentNames, all can be aliases of each other as long as "James Bond" does not show up as an alias for "James Bond". Can I prevent this in the model definition? If not, can I prevent it anywhere else, preferably so that the Django Admin understands it?

• Ripping MP3s in Rhythmbox Ubuntu 12.10 (64 bit)?

  I installed a couple of days ago Ubuntu 12.10 (64 bit). I today tried ripping a CD in the MP3 format. However, whenever I try to rip, it says it is missing an extra multimedia plugin "Gstreamer extra plug-ins (i386)". I then try to install the :i386 version of the gstreamer-ugly plugins, but then I get the same problem but with the id3-demuxer (or something similar) The Terminal output I get from both problems (but replace the "MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) encoder" with the "ID3-demuxer" name) is: james@clefairy:~$ rhythmbox (rhythmbox:24122): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed Rhythmbox-Message: Missing plugin: gstreamer|0.10|rhythmbox|MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) encoder|encoder-audio/mpeg, mpegversion=(int)1, layer=(int)3 /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gobject/constants.py:24: Warning: g_boxed_type_register_static: assertion `g_type_from_name (name) == 0' failed import gobject._gobject It doesn't help that each time I have to install/remove the entire Gstreamer-ugly collection each time - I can't find that specific file. The CD plays fine, it's the ripping plugin that doesn't seem to work. I didn't have this problem previously on 12.04 (64 bit).

• fedora12, yum not releasing "lock" after performing an action

  Hello, This problem has been occurring quite frequently recently and I can't seem to find a way of preventing it.   The best way of describing this is I have a table of people with their names and ages. Assume that people with the same surname are from the same family. I need a query in oracle which will retrieve a list of the oldest person in each family, but not older than a certain age. • Ruby gems gone after after jruby install

  Today I installed jruby by downloading it, extracting it to /home/james/jruby-1.4.0 and adding the following line to .bashrc export JRUBY_HOME=/home/james/jruby-1.4.0 export PATH=$JRUBY_HOME/bin:$PATH And then I installed some jruby gems via jruby -S gem install ... Jruby works fine, but this seemed to have cause two problems: 1) When I try to run a ruby (not jruby) on rails migration, I see: Missing the Rails gem. Please `gem install -v= rails`, update your RAILS_GEM_VERSION setting in config/environment.rb for the Rails version you do have installed, or comment out RAILS_GEM_VERSION to use the latest version installed. 2) when I do gem list --local, I only see the gems that I've installed for jruby. Launching web applications via ruby script/server succeeds without any warnings. Please help.

  There are so many events and sessions to attend at JavaOne, it's unfair to ask people to choose just one thing they liked, but here are some favorite moments: I loved meeting many open source contributors and friends I have not met in person before and seeing that projects like e.g. Hudson are alive and kicking and have a great future ahead of them. -Manfred Moser My "The Problem with Women" session. It had LOADS of interactivity from the audience, who really helped to make that session.  I came out if it with a real sense of optimism - we love our jobs, we love what we do, and we should be proud of telling everyone about it to attract different talent into the industry. (Read her blog JavaOne: The Problem With Women - A Technical Approach for details.) -Trish Gee My kudos to Oracle for making the presentation materials quickly available to the public. Some of them were already available during JavaOne. Lots of slide decks are already there, and in some cases you may even find the video recordings too. Go to http://www.oracle.com/javaone and select JavaOne Technical Sessions.  -Yakov Fain I loved that not only was James Gosling present at the Community Keynote (which felt more like the keynotes of old times [big space, big screens, fun and tech]) but he was also found wandering the halls of the Hilton the day prior. Bring back James! Add back the toys section in the Community Keynote. Let the t-shirt tossing begin anew. These are "small" things that really fire up the community. -Andres Almiray Seeing James Gosling at JavaOne was a real shot in the arm for Java.  He needs to be there every year. -Frank Greco +42 on having James and the T-shirt tossing. -Stephan Janssen The session "Integrate Java with Robots, Home Automation, Musical Instruments, and Kinect." • C4C - 2012

  C4C, in Kansas City, is always a fun event. At points it gets to be a pressure cooker as you zone in trying to crank out some fantastic code in just a few hours, but it is always fun. A great challenge of your skill as a software developer and for a good cause. This year my team helped The United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Kansas City organization to add online job applications and a database for tracking internal training. I keep finding that there is one key rule to pulling off a successful C4C weekend project, and that is “Keep It Simple”. Each time you want to add that one cool little feature you have to ask yourself.. Is it really necessary? and Do I have time for that? And if you are going to learn something new you should ask yourself if you’re really going to be able to learn that AND finish the project in the given time. Sometimes the less elegant code is the better code if it works. That said… You get a great amount of freedom to build the solution the way you want. Typically, the software we build for the charities will save them a lot of money and time and make their jobs easier. You are able to build the software you know you are capable of creating from your own ideas. I highly recommend any developers in the area to signup next year and show off your skills. I know I will!

• What naughty ways are there of driving traffic?

  OK, so this is purely for my intellectual curiosity and I'm not interested in illegal methods (no botnets please). But say, for instance, that some organisation incentivised link sharing in a bid to drive publicity. How could I drive traffic to my link? Obviously I could spam all my friends on social networking sites, which is what they want me to do, but that doesn't sound as fun as trying to game the system. (Not that I necessarily dispute the merit of this particular campaign.) The ideas I've come up with so far (in order of increasing deviousness) include: Link-dropping - This is too close to what they want me to do to be devious, but I've done it here (sorry) and I've done it on Twitter. I'm subverting it slightly by focusing on the game aspects rather than their desired message. AdWords - Not very devious at all, but effectively free with the vouchers I've accrued. That said, I must be pretty poor at choosing keywords, because I've seen very few hits (~5) so far. Browser testing websites - The target has a robots txt which prevents browsershots from processing it, but I got around this by including it in an iframe on a page that I hosted. But my creative juices have run dry I'm afraid. Does anyone have any cheeky/devious/cunning/all-of-the-above idea for driving traffic to my page?

• Any valid reason to Nest Master Pages in ASP.Net rather than Inherit?

  Currently in a debate at work and I cannot fathom why someone would intentionally avoid Inheritance with Master Pages. For reference here is the project setup: BaseProject MainMasterPage SomeEvent SiteProject SiteMasterPage nested MainMasterPage OtherSiteProject MainMasterPage (from BaseProject) The debate came up because some code in BaseProject needs to know about "SomeEvent". With the setup above, the code in BaseProject needs to call this.Master.Master. That same code in BaseProject also applies to OtherSiteProject which is just accessed as this.Master. SiteMasterPage has no code differences, only HTML differences. If SiteMasterPage Inherits MainMasterPage rather than Nests it, then all code is valid as this.Master. Can anyone think of a reason why to use a Nested Master Page here instead of an Inherited one?

• What exactly is "Web API" in ASP.Net MVC4?

  I know what a Web API is. I've written API's in multiple languages (including in MVC3). I'm also well practiced in ASP.Net. I just discovered that MVC4 has "Web API" and without going through the video examples I can't find a good explanation of what exactly it IS. From my past experience, Microsoft technologies (especially ASP.Net) have a tendency to take a simple concept and wrap it in a bunch of useless overhead that is meant to make everything "easier". Can someone please explain to me what Web API in MVC4 is exactly? Why do I need it? Why can't I just write my own API?

• ATI Catalyst driver 12.8 is not using hardware acceleration on Precise

  I've been using Ubuntu and ATI Catalyst for years. On my clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 I've noticed that Catalyst 12.6 and then 12.8 are not actually using my HD5750 GPU for hardware acceleration - high CPU usage, zero GPU load. Everything installed correctly with no hassles, fglrxinfo and vainfo are correct as per this HowTo for Precise. I have an Ubuntu 10.04 with Catalyst 12.6 installation on the same hardware which does use the GPU - low CPU usage, high GPU load when transcodeing video files or playing video content. The VA-API drivers are not installed on the 10.04 build. They are not mentioned in this HowTo for Lucid. fgl_glxgears frame rates on Precise are a fifth of the rates on Lucid. LUCID jw@Kworld:~$ fgl_glxgears Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer 16867 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3373.400 FPS 12523 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2504.600 FPS 13763 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2752.600 FPS PRECISE jw@NewWorld12:~$ fgl_glxgears Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer 12905 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2581.000 FPS 3230 frames in 5.0 seconds = 646.000 FPS 517 frames in 5.0 seconds = 103.400 FPS 518 frames in 5.0 seconds = 103.600 FPS 6489 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1297.800 FPS This is glxgears running in fullscreen. • Can anyone recommend a chorded keyboard for a programmer?

  Pre-emptive strike: It's subjective, but it's also Friday... ;) Inspired by this great question and related to this great question, I have decided to buy a chorded keyboard. (A chorded keyboard, by the way, is one with a reduced number of keys, that must be pressed together, in chords, to give all the possible characters etc. - see wikipedia) Being a programmer means that the keys I use regularly are likely different to a regular Joe (a lot more semi-colons for a start), so I was wondering if any of my fellow programmers had tested a chorded keyboard for use on the battlefield of code? Being a nerd, I'm also interested in the extent to which I'd be able to customise my chorded keyboard. (Macros? Shortcuts?) Edit I'm beginning to suspect that no-one has heard of these, let alone tried one. So we're all talking about the same thing, here's an example: Twiddler 2.1

• Is there an app/script I can deploy to enable my users to change their own LDAP passwords?

  I've recently enabled LDAP based authentication on my domain. This has allowed us to use a single set of credentials to administer the blog, the forum and the wiki. Unfortunately, this has come at the cost of users being able to change their own passwords. Ideally, users would be able to visit a page (i.e. mydomain.com/account), authenticate and then change their password. Does anyone know of a script or app that will allow me to do this quickly and easily? I guess it wouldn't be hard to write in PHP, but I'd prefer not to have the hassle.

• Why use an OO approach instead of a giant "switch" statement?

  I am working in a .Net, C# shop and I have a coworker that keeps insisting that we should use giant Switch statements in our code with lots of "Cases" rather than more object oriented approaches. His argument consistently goes back to the fact that a Switch statement compiles to a "cpu jump table" and is therefore the fastest option (even though in other things our team is told that we don't care about speed). I honestly don't have an argument against this...because I don't know what the heck he's talking about. Is he right? Is he just talking out his ass? Just trying to learn here.

• Good architecture for user information on separate databases?

  I need to write an API to connect to an existing SQL database. The API will be written in ASP.Net MVC3. The slight problem is that with existing users of the system, they may have a username on multiple databases. Each company using the product gets a brand new instance of the database, but over the years (the system has been running for 10 years) there are quite a few users (hundreds) who have multiple usernames across multiple "companies" (things got fragmented obviously and sometimes a single Company has 5 "projects" that each have their own database). Long story short, I need to be able to have a single unified user login that will allow existing users to access their information across all their projects. The only thing I can think is storing a bunch of connection strings, but that feels like a really bad idea. I'll have a new Database that will hold the "unified user" information...can anyone suggest a solid system architecture that can handle a setup like this?

• When does Information become Data? (i.e. Information wants to be free) [closed]

  I hear Programmers often talk about how Information Wants To Be Free which I mostly agree with, but the thing that people don't often pay attention to is that Information and Data are not the same thing. Should Data also be free? Does that mean all of you should have full access to my Social Security Number and other personal "information"? Where is the limit? If there is a limit, why do people throw this phrase around like it fits every circumstance (like this one)

• Will the Mac app store accept an app that reads and parses iPhone backups?

  I wanted to submit an app to the Mac app store that reads the iPhone backup dir and provides some useful functionality on user's voicemails and sms messages. The app parses and reads the backup mbdb files, and extracts the voicemail and sms sqlite db files as well as the voicemails to a temp directory. Is this kind of app likely to be rejected since it reads an unpublished format? It's not using any private APIs. I realize none of you are reviewers but wondering if I should even try to submit it to the store.

• Site failing randomly - could it be Cloudflare or something weird in the JS?

  I've been working on a simple site that uses javascript to fade through some fullscreen background images as well as some other simple animations. I've tested the site on Chrome, Safari, FF and Opera on OSX, IE8+ on Win7 and Chrome & FF on Ubuntu and everything looks as I'd expect it to. However, I've had reports of the site failing to load (stops at the stage where the background fades up) on Safari and Chrome on OSX and Win. I can't replicate this on any setup so I'm finding it impossible to troubleshoot. Google's instant preview shows the site fine as does most of the options at browsershots.org so I'm really scratching my head. I'm running the site's traffic through Cloudflare and I'm wondering whether anyone can see (or knows from other sites) why Cloudflare might be mangling the JS or causing a problem somehow (I don't get any errors in the JS error console). Of course, if you can replicate the problem on your machine and can suggest an area to look at that would be amazing but I'm hoping that, like me, you don't see any problem with the site! • Arguments for or against using Try/Catch as logical operators

  I just discovered some lovely code in our companies app that uses Try-Catch blocks as logical operators. Meaning, "do some code, if that throws this error, do this code, but if that throws this error do this 3rd thing instead". It uses "Finally" as the "else" statement it appears. I know that this is wrong inherently, but before I go picking a fight I was hoping for some well thought out arguments. And hey, if you have arguments FOR the use of Try-Catch in this manner, please do tell. EDIT For any who are wondering, the language is C# and the code in question is about 30+ lines and is looking for specific exceptions, it is not handling ALL exceptions.

• Adding multiple byte arrays in c# [migrated]

  I'm working on a legacy system that uses byte arrays for permission levels. Example: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 means they have "Full Control" 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 02 means they have "Add Control" 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 04 means they have "Delete Control" So, if a User has "00 00 00 00 00 00 00 07" that means they have all 3 (as far as it has been explained to me). Now, my question is that I need to know how to get to "0x07" when creating/checking records. I don't know the syntax for actually combining 0x01, 0x02 and 0x04 so that I come out with 0x07.
