• How do I add and/or keep subtitles when converting video?

  I have a mkv video I want to convert to mp4, but every which way I try and convert it (Handbrake, WinFF, ffmpeg, mencoder,...I lose the video's subtitles. How can I convert the video,keeping the subtitles, or add a subtitles.srt? I also would like 2 pass encoding with a video bitrate of 4054 and audio bitrate of 160. Thanks. • Shell script for replacing string in all PHP-files, for each user

  Each user has some php-files using a shared database commondb. I want to iterate over all users (in users.csv), and in their home folder (e.g. /home/joe) find all php files recursively, and replace each occurrence of "commondb" with their own databasename, e.g. "joedb" for "joe". • Adatbázis szerver konszolidáció Oracle technológiákkal - eroforrás allokálás

  Szerver konszolidációnál alapmegoldás a virtualizáció, pedig az Oracle Database rendelkezik olyan képességekkel, melyekkel a virtualizáció elonyeit élvezhetjük, ám teljesítményben felülmúljuk azt. Több adatbázis konszolidációját meg lehet oldani egy nagy szerveren, vagy egy több szerverbol álló klaszteren. Bármelyik megoldást is választjuk (ezek elonyeivel és hátrányaival most nem foglalkozok), az egyik legfontosabb megoldandó probléma, hogy biztonsággal el tudjuk oket szeparálni akár adatbiztonsági, akár eroforrás kezelési szempontból. A szoftveres és hardveres virtualizációk lehetové teszik, hogy a szerver eroforrásait több virtuális szerver között felosszuk, ezáltal elszeparálhatók a párhuzamosan futó adatbázis példányok. Ezek a megoldások általában költségesek, plusz adminisztrációt jelentenek és teljesítmény csökkenést okoznak. Az alábbiakban röviden összeszedem, hogy az Oracle Database milyen eroforrás szeparációs technológiákkal rendelkezik, melyek jól használhatók adatbázis konszolidáció esetén: Adatbázis szolgáltatások: Azt talán minden Oracle adatbázis-kezelovel foglalkozó szakérto tudja, hogy akliensek az adatbázist az adatbázis szolgáltatás nevével érik el. Alapértelmezetten minden adatbázis egyetlen szolgáltatással rendelkezik, mely automatikusan a 'global database name' paraméterrel megegyezo nevet kapja az adatbázis létrehozásakor. Ugyanakkor egy adatbázishoz több szolgáltatás név is rendelheto. A szolgáltatásokkal csoportosíthatók a különbözo feladatokat végrehajtó kliensek, és a szolgáltatásokhoz rendelhetjük hogy melyik kliens csoportnak mennyi rendszer eroforrást allokálunk. Klaszteres adatbázisok (RAC) esetén egy szolgáltatás több adatbázis példányhoz (szerverhez) kapcsolódhat, amivel valós terheléstol függo terhelés elosztás valósítható meg (itt már szerepet kap egyébként a Resource Manager is, lásd késobb). Az alkalmazás számára irrelevánssá válik, hogy az adott szolgáltatást mely szerver szolgálja ki. A szolgáltatásokhoz kapcsolódó eroforrások menet közben dinamikusan bovíthetok, de kezelik a kieso eroforrások hiányát is (failover). Database Resource Manager: Az Oracle Database Resource Manager az adatbázis szintjén kezeli az eroforrásokat, a CPU használatot szabályozza az adatbázis terhelés kontrolljával. A Resource Manager egy CPU-n adott pillanatban csak egyetlen Oracle processz futtatását engedélyezi, miközben a többit várakoztatja (ahogy az egy operációs rendszer ütemezojében is muködik). A Resource Manager csak akkor lép muködésbe, amikor a CPU terhelése eléri a 100%-ot. Ekkor a Resource Plan-nek megfeleloen korlátozhatja az egyes eroforrás csoportok számára elérheto eroforrás (CPU) mennyiségét. Instance Caging: A Resource Manager részeként az Oracle Database 11gR2-tol elérheto Instance Caging technológiával virtualizáció és operációs rendszer szintu eroforrás felosztás nélkül az adatbázis példány szintjén lehet szabályozni az allokált CPU számot. Erre akkor lehet szükség, ha egy szerveren több példány futtatására van szükség. A Resource Manager bekapcsolásával és a cpu_count paraméter beállításával lehet adatbázis példányonként aktiválni az Instance Caging funkcionalitást. A cpu_count egy dinamikus paraméter, célszeru arra az értékre állítani, ahány CPU-t az adott adatbázis példány maximálisan igényelhet. Lehetoség van túlméretezni a példányok számára rendelkezésre álló processzorok számát. Például egy 4 CPUs- szerver esetében ha van 3 példányunk, mindháromnak adhatunk 3 CPU-t. Azonban ha mindegyik terhelés alatt van, akkor a példány számára maximum allokált CPU szám osztva összes allokált CPU számmal arányban részesül a processzorból, ami a példában 33,33%, azaz 1,33 CPU. Input Output Resource Manager (IORM):Nem csak a processzorok használatát szabályozhatjuk, lehetoség van a megosztott storage eroforrásainak felosztására is. Az Input Output Resorce Manager (IORM) alkalmazásával storage szinten tudjuk szabályozni az adatbázisok közötti és azokon belüli minimális I/O szinteket. Database Vault: Ugyanazon adatbázisba konszolidált alkalmazások esetén a rendszergazda szerepkörök szeparálása lehetséges az Oracle Database Vault technológiával. Ezzel elérheto az, hogy biztonságosan konszolidáljuk adatbázisainkat úgy, hogy minden adminisztrátor csak a hozzá tartozó adatokat, objektumokat lássa, módosíthassa.

• Missing /dev/xconsole causes rsyslog to stop as well as all other services

  We are running Ubuntu-10.04.04LTS in Hyper-V environments. We found that the services ssh http or anything else stopped because the rsyslog daemon had died with the message unable to find the /dev/xconsole file. I fixed it temporarily with the following. FILE=/dev/xconsole if [ -e $FILE ]; then echo "$FILE exists Carry on!" else mknod -m 640 /dev/xconsole c 1 3 chown syslog:adm /dev/xconsole echo "Created $FILE." fi The problem is that I can not get rsyslog daemon to process these 8 lines when I restart the daemon. Also restarting the daemon removes the /dev/xconsole file and we are back to all service stopped. In addressing this problem I have inserted the if--fi lines after the start and restart conditions in the rsyslog script. The problem is I do not get an echo to stdio. Does someone have an idea on how to make the rsyslog report to stdio when it creates the /dev/xconsole device. Thanks George Van Tuyl

• Ubuntu One not syncing and not providing feedback

  Firstly, I apologize for not being more specific with my problem, but Ubuntu One is just not providing me with any information. It appears to be working, it states that "syncronization in progress..." but it never actually syncronizes (by never I mean 3 days). When I first selected a folder to sync using Ubuntu One it took on the order of hours to sync over 500MB of files - it uploaded the folder hierarchy first and populated the folders over a few hours. That is not happening at all now. Please let me know if there is a way I can get more information out of Ubuntu One that I can post and hopefully resolve this issue. Thanks, Joe

• Gnome Shell opens as classic

  I'm running 12.04 on a Gateway LT4004u netbook, and I installed Gnome3 using the apt-get commands in the terminal. When I rebooted and ran "Gnome Shell" it opened up classic mode. I thought that my cursor might have slipped the first time, but on multiple retries logging in under gnome shell would open the gnome classic desktop. I even uninstalled Gnome Shell and reinstalled it with software center, but I still have the same problem. I was wondering if this might be an issue with my graphics card? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks! -Joe

• Copying VBoxAdditions to usr/share/virtualbox folder

  Since for some reason VBox does not find the Additions on the internet, I was trying to install them in the Ubuntu directory Vbox is looking for them - which is: usr/share/virtualbox but I am denied permission to do so. Any way around it? I am relatively new to ubuntu (know how to use the GUI, but still learning how to talk to the machine proper, so many things will be new to me; used to be power user/analyst for MS Windows, 98-Vista, so not a PC newbie, but still I'd say Linux newbie). • Printer spooler spoolsv.exe crashes

  We have a problem with a Windows 7 print spooler. There is a Windows 2011 Small Business Server running as print server and 2 computers in the network their print spooler keeps crashing at random. The log files says it is ntdll.dll that has a fault. We can also print from other computers. But on two computers the print spooler crashes. Sometimes it crashes after a user is logged in, but it also happened multiple times after a print job. After each crash we get the same ntdll.dll error. Hopefully someone can help me with this problem. If you need more information, don't hesitate to ask.

• Twitter User/Search Feature Header Support in LINQ to Twitter

  LINQ to Twitter’s goal is to support the entire Twitter API. So, if you see a new feature pop-up, it will be in-queue for inclusion. The same holds for the new X-Feature… response headers for User/Search requests.  However, you don’t have to wait for a special property on the TwitterContext to access these headers, you can just use them via the TwitterContext.ResponseHeaders collection. The following code demonstrates how to access the new X-Feature… headers with LINQ to Twitter: var user = (from usr in twitterCtx.User where usr.Type == UserType.Search && usr.Query == "Joe Mayo" select usr) .FirstOrDefault(); Console.WriteLine( "X-FeatureRateLimit-Limit: {0}\n" + "X-FeatureRateLimit-Remaining: {1}\n" + "X-FeatureRateLimit-Reset: {2}\n" + "X-FeatureRateLimit-Class: {3}\n", twitterCtx.ResponseHeaders["X-FeatureRateLimit-Limit"], twitterCtx.ResponseHeaders["X-FeatureRateLimit-Remaining"], twitterCtx.ResponseHeaders["X-FeatureRateLimit-Reset"], twitterCtx.ResponseHeaders["X-FeatureRateLimit-Class"]); The query above is from the User entity, whose type is Search; allowing you to search for the Twitter user whose name is specified by the Query parameter filter. After materializing the query, with FirstOrDefault, twitterCtx will hold all of the headers, including X-Feature… that Twitter returned.  Running the code above will display results similar to the following: X-FeatureRateLimit-Limit: 60 X-FeatureRateLimit-Remaining: 59 X-FeatureRateLimit-Reset: 1271452177 X-FeatureRateLimit-Class: namesearch In addition to getting the X-Feature… headers a capability you might have noticed is that the TwitterContext.ResponseHeaders collection will contain any HTTP that Twitter sends back to a query.   The first thing that comes to my mind is to do a bunch of \t's, but that would cause words to be misaligned if any word is longer than any other word by a few characters. For example, I would like to have something like: Name Last Name Middle initial Bob Jones M Joe ReallyLongLastName T Instead, by including only "\t"'s in my cout statement I can only manage to get Name Last Name Middle initial Bob Jones M Joe ReallyLongLastName T or Name Last Name Middle initial Bob Jones M Joe ReallyLongLastName T What else would I need to do?

• Receiving an MVP Award and Credibility

  The post titled, The Problem with MVPs, by Steve Barbour was interesting because it makes you think about the thousands of MVPs around the world and what their value really is. Having been the recipient of multiple MVP awards, it’s an opportunity to reflect and judge my own performance. This is not a dangerous thing to do, but quite the opposite. If a person believes in self improvement, then critical analysis is an important part of that process. A lot of MVPs will tell you that they would be doing the same thing, regardless of whether they were an MVP or not; helping others in the community, which is also where I prefer to hang my hat. I’ve never defined myself as an expert and never will; this determination is left to others. In fact, let me just come out and say it, “I don’t know everything”. Shocked? Sometimes the gap between expectations and reality extends beyond a reasonable measure. Being labeled as a technical expert feels good for one's self esteem and is certainly a useful motivational technique. A problem can emerge though when an individual believes, too much, in what they are told. The problem is not with a pat on the back, but with a person does with the positive reinforcement. Is narcissism too strong a word? How often have you been in a public forum reading a demeaning response to a question that only serves in attempt to raise the stature of the person providing the response? Such behavior compromises one’s credibility, raises questions about validity of the MVP award, and is limited in community value. I’m currently under consideration for another MVP award on April 1st. If it happens, it will be good. Otherwise, I’ll keep writing articles, coding open source software, and whatever else I enjoy doing; with the best reward being that people find value in what I do. • Oracle ADF Mobile and Developing On-device Mobile Applications

  Hi, everyone: It has been almost a year since we posted to this blog, and I am happy to report that we are steadily marching toward releasing a new generation of ADF Mobile.  This blog site has been quiet as we are heads down to develop this new generation of ADF Mobile.  As we are nearing releasing this next generation product, there are substantial number of Oracle internal application teams and external customers/partners actively developing using the beta version of this framework.  We are actively taking feedbacks from these teams and ensuring the product is ready for general availability.
