  • How to backup virtual machines on a standalone ESXi host?

    - by Massimo
    Standalone ESXi (4.1) host without any vCenter Server. How to backup virtual machines as quickly and storage-friendly as possible? I know I can access the ESXi console and use the standard Unix cp command, but this has the downfall of copying the whole VMDK files, not only their actually used space; so, for a 30-GB VMDK of which only 1 GB is used, the backup would take 30 full GBs of space, and time accordingly. And yes, I know about thin-provisioned virtual disks, but they tend to behave very badly when physically copied, and/or to blow up to their full provisioned size; also, they are not recommended for actual VM performance. It is ok for me to shut down the VMs before backing them up (i.e. I don't need "live" backups); but I need a way to copy them around efficiently; and yes, a way to automate shutdown/startup when taking a backup would also help. I only have ESXi; no Service Console, no vCenter Server... what's the best way to handle this task? Also, what about restores?

  • Which Microsoft server applications are compatible with Windows Server 2012? [closed]

    - by Massimo
    As mush as I personally find the new user interface to be absolutely awful (and even more so on a server O.S.), we'll soon have to put up with Windows Server 2012 (formerly Windows Server 8). So, let's start with the basics: which Microsoft products do actually run on it? I've been looking around for a compatibility chart for a while, but couldn't find one. On the requirements/support pages for various Microsoft products (even for the latest releases), Windows Server 2012 is never mentioned at all. So, what about... SQL Server Exchange Lync SharePoint System Center (CM, OM, DPM, VMM...) And so on?

  • Windows 7 boot manager not localized on UEFI systems

    - by Massimo
    I originally posted this on SuperUser because I discovered this behaviour on my home computer, but this seems to be a general issue on UEFI systems, thus I'm posting here too; I also hope someone here can shed some light on what's going on. Italian version of Windows 7 x64 SP1, same installation media used for both situations. When running on BIOS systems, the boot manager is fully localized, both for the loading screen and for the F8 boot menu. When running on UEFI systems, the boot manager always runs in English, even if it's correctly configured to use the it-IT locale, as BCDEDIT clearly shows: Windows Boot Manager -------------------- identificatore {bootmgr} device partition=\Device\HarddiskVolume1 path \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi description Windows Boot Manager locale it-IT inherit {globalsettings} default {current} resumeobject {9ef36aa6-4188-11e3-909d-d32f0c3871c8} displayorder {current} toolsdisplayorder {memdiag} timeout 30 Caricatore di avvio di Windows ------------------- identificatore {current} device partition=C: path \Windows\system32\winload.efi description Windows 7 locale it-IT inherit {bootloadersettings} recoverysequence {9ef36aa8-4188-11e3-909d-d32f0c3871c8} recoveryenabled Yes osdevice partition=C: systemroot \Windows resumeobject {9ef36aa6-4188-11e3-909d-d32f0c3871c8} nx OptIn I also noticed something strange here; the motherboard setup shows "Windows Boot Manager" as the main boot option, while the actual boot disk is listed as the second one. Looks like the Windows Boot Manager is actually being loaded from somewhere else than the first partition of the first disk... what's going on here? Update I've also checked the EFI boot manager using bcdedit /enum FIRMWARE. That one looks correctly localized, too: Boot Manager per firmware --------------------- identificatore {fwbootmgr} displayorder {bootmgr} {9ef36aa4-4188-11e3-909d-d32f0c3871c8} {a30e8550-47e4-11e3-9ad1-806e6f6e6963} timeout 1 Windows Boot Manager -------------------- identificatore {bootmgr} device partition=\Device\HarddiskVolume1 path \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi description Windows Boot Manager locale it-IT inherit {globalsettings} default {current} resumeobject {9ef36aa6-4188-11e3-909d-d32f0c3871c8} displayorder {current} toolsdisplayorder {memdiag} timeout 30 Applicazione firmware (101fffff) ------------------------------- identificatore {9ef36aa4-4188-11e3-909d-d32f0c3871c8} description CD/DVD Drive Applicazione firmware (101fffff) ------------------------------- identificatore {a30e8550-47e4-11e3-9ad1-806e6f6e6963} description Hard Drive

  • What is Google Page Rank and Why is it So Important?

    What exactly is PageRank? It is basically a link analysis algorithm, which was influenced by citation analysis, which dates way back to the fifties, when it was conceived by Eugene Garfield and later on by Massimo Marchiori. This link analysis algorithm essentially gives set of hyperlinked documents, where they are weighed in numerical form, and are given a number assignment between zero to ten.

  • apc cache compression

    - by Massimo
    I want to store some key value. I see memcache api supports on-the-fly compression: memcache_set( obj, var, value, MEMCACHE_COMPRESSED, ttl ) What about apc ? I cannot find any doc. My goal, for example in php : function cache( $key, $value ) { $data = serialize( $value ); if ( strlen( $data ) >= 1024 ) $data = 'z' . gzcompress( $data, 1 ); else $data = '=' . $data; return apc_store( $key, $data, $ttl ); }

  • How to get new logs in an EventLogEntyCollection?

    - by Massimo
    I need to monitor security event logs on very busy domain controllers, which generates hundreds of them each minute. I know how to use EventLog, EventLogEntry and EvenLogEntryCollection to open and read a server's event log, but an EvenLogEntryCollection can contain ~300.000 events, and it wraps around continuously (and very fast), so I can't rely on its index to find new entries. So far, the only thing I was able to come up with is saving the timestamp of the last processed log entry and then iterate above the EventLogEntryCollection until I find an EventLogEntry which TimeGenerated properties is greater than the timestamp I saved; but it's terribly slow to iterate on ~300.000 entries to find the new ones. How can I quickly find the new entries in an big event log?

  • Save and Load Data on Today Extensions (iOS 8)

    - by Massimo Piazza
    Is it possible to save and load data on Today Extension using NSUserDefaults? After closing the Notification Center, the widget behaves like an app which is terminated, so any data results lost. How could I solve this issue? This is my code: NSUserDefaults *defaults; - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; defaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; NSArray *loadStrings = [defaults stringArrayForKey:@"savedStrings"]; if ([loadStrings objectAtIndex:0] != nil) { [display setText:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@", [loadStrings objectAtIndex:0]]]; } if ([loadStrings objectAtIndex:1] != nil) { calculatorMemory = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@", [loadStrings objectAtIndex:1]].doubleValue; } } - (IBAction)saveData:(id)sender { NSString *displayString; NSString *memoryString; NSArray *saveStrings = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects: displayString, memoryString, nil]; defaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; [defaults setObject:saveStrings forKey:@"savedStrings"]; [defaults synchronize]; }

  • windows 7 logging off standard users

    - by massimogentilini
    I've a Windows 7 installation with 2 users, one administrator and the other is not. If I try to logon with the standard user it show the Welcome Screen and them logoff immediately. If I logon with the administrator user or if I set the standard used as an administrator it works without problems. Any idea? Windows 7 Ultimate running on a netbook, AVG Antivirus, no special software or any other specific configuration. Regards Massimo

  • Slow IE8 Start-up due to LDAP DNS queries

    - by MikeJ-UK
    Recently (in the last few days), my installation of IE8 has been taking 15 to 20 seconds to load my home page. Specifically, the sequence of events (as reported by WireShark) is:- Browser issues a DNS A query to resolve the home page server's IP address. Browser then spends the next 15-20 seconds broadcasting DNS SRV _LDAP._TCP queries, (roughly on a 2 second tick) to which it receives no answer (we have no LDAP servers). Browser re-issues the DNS A query and resolves the server's IP address again. Finally, the browser issues an HTTP GET for the home page. Does anyone know why this is happening? Possibly related to this question EDIT: @Massimo, LDAP query is :- Domain Name System (query) Transaction ID: 0x11c5 Flags: 0x0100 (Standard query) Questions: 1 Answer RRS: 0 Authority RRS: 0 Additional RRS: 0 Queries _LDAP._TCP: type SRV, class IN Name: _LDAP._TCP Type: SRV (Service location) Class: IN (0x0001)

  • linux raid 1: right after replacing and syncing one drive, the other disk fails - understanding what is going on with mdstat/mdadm

    - by devicerandom
    We have an old RAID 1 Linux server (Ubuntu Lucid 10.04), with four partitions. A few days ago /dev/sdb failed, and today we noticed /dev/sda had pre-failure ominous SMART signs (~4000 reallocated sector count). We replaced /dev/sdb this morning and rebuilt the RAID on the new drive, following this guide: http://www.howtoforge.com/replacing_hard_disks_in_a_raid1_array Everything went smooth until the very end. When it looked like it was finishing to synchronize the last partition, the other old one failed. At this point I am very unsure of the state of the system. Everything seems working and the files seem to be all accessible, just as if it synchronized everything, but I'm new to RAID and I'm worried about what is going on. The /proc/mdstat output is: Personalities : [raid1] [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10] md3 : active raid1 sdb4[2](S) sda4[0] 478713792 blocks [2/1] [U_] md2 : active raid1 sdb3[1] sda3[2](F) 244140992 blocks [2/1] [_U] md1 : active raid1 sdb2[1] sda2[2](F) 244140992 blocks [2/1] [_U] md0 : active raid1 sdb1[1] sda1[2](F) 9764800 blocks [2/1] [_U] unused devices: <none> The order of [_U] vs [U_]. Why aren't they consistent along all the array? Is the first U /dev/sda or /dev/sdb? (I tried looking on the web for this trivial information but I found no explicit indication) If I read correctly for md0, [_U] should be /dev/sda1 (down) and /dev/sdb1 (up). But if /dev/sda has failed, how can it be the opposite for md3 ? I understand /dev/sdb4 is now spare because probably it failed to synchronize it 100%, but why does it show /dev/sda4 as up? Shouldn't it be [__]? Or [_U] anyway? The /dev/sda drive now cannot even be accessed by SMART anymore apparently, so I wouldn't expect it to be up. What is wrong with my interpretation of the output? I attach also the outputs of mdadm --detail for the four partitions: /dev/md0: Version : 00.90 Creation Time : Fri Jan 21 18:43:07 2011 Raid Level : raid1 Array Size : 9764800 (9.31 GiB 10.00 GB) Used Dev Size : 9764800 (9.31 GiB 10.00 GB) Raid Devices : 2 Total Devices : 2 Preferred Minor : 0 Persistence : Superblock is persistent Update Time : Tue Nov 5 17:27:33 2013 State : clean, degraded Active Devices : 1 Working Devices : 1 Failed Devices : 1 Spare Devices : 0 UUID : a3b4dbbd:859bf7f2:bde36644:fcef85e2 Events : 0.7704 Number Major Minor RaidDevice State 0 0 0 0 removed 1 8 17 1 active sync /dev/sdb1 2 8 1 - faulty spare /dev/sda1 /dev/md1: Version : 00.90 Creation Time : Fri Jan 21 18:43:15 2011 Raid Level : raid1 Array Size : 244140992 (232.83 GiB 250.00 GB) Used Dev Size : 244140992 (232.83 GiB 250.00 GB) Raid Devices : 2 Total Devices : 2 Preferred Minor : 1 Persistence : Superblock is persistent Update Time : Tue Nov 5 17:39:06 2013 State : clean, degraded Active Devices : 1 Working Devices : 1 Failed Devices : 1 Spare Devices : 0 UUID : 8bcd5765:90dc93d5:cc70849c:224ced45 Events : 0.1508280 Number Major Minor RaidDevice State 0 0 0 0 removed 1 8 18 1 active sync /dev/sdb2 2 8 2 - faulty spare /dev/sda2 /dev/md2: Version : 00.90 Creation Time : Fri Jan 21 18:43:19 2011 Raid Level : raid1 Array Size : 244140992 (232.83 GiB 250.00 GB) Used Dev Size : 244140992 (232.83 GiB 250.00 GB) Raid Devices : 2 Total Devices : 2 Preferred Minor : 2 Persistence : Superblock is persistent Update Time : Tue Nov 5 17:46:44 2013 State : clean, degraded Active Devices : 1 Working Devices : 1 Failed Devices : 1 Spare Devices : 0 UUID : 2885668b:881cafed:b8275ae8:16bc7171 Events : 0.2289636 Number Major Minor RaidDevice State 0 0 0 0 removed 1 8 19 1 active sync /dev/sdb3 2 8 3 - faulty spare /dev/sda3 /dev/md3: Version : 00.90 Creation Time : Fri Jan 21 18:43:22 2011 Raid Level : raid1 Array Size : 478713792 (456.54 GiB 490.20 GB) Used Dev Size : 478713792 (456.54 GiB 490.20 GB) Raid Devices : 2 Total Devices : 2 Preferred Minor : 3 Persistence : Superblock is persistent Update Time : Tue Nov 5 17:19:20 2013 State : clean, degraded Active Devices : 1 Working Devices : 2 Failed Devices : 0 Spare Devices : 1 Number Major Minor RaidDevice State 0 8 4 0 active sync /dev/sda4 1 0 0 1 removed 2 8 20 - spare /dev/sdb4 The active sync on /dev/sda4 baffles me. • Listing common SQL Code Smells.

    - by Phil Factor
    Once you’ve done a number of SQL Code-reviews, you’ll know those signs in the code that all might not be well. These ’Code Smells’ are coding styles that don’t directly cause a bug, but are indicators that all is not well with the code. . Kent Beck and Massimo Arnoldi seem to have coined the phrase in the "OnceAndOnlyOnce" page of www.C2.com, where Kent also said that code "wants to be simple". Bad Smells in Code was an essay by Kent Beck and Martin Fowler, published as Chapter 3 of the book ‘Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code’ (ISBN 978-0201485677) Although there are generic code-smells, SQL has its own particular coding habits that will alert the programmer to the need to re-factor what has been written. See Exploring Smelly Code   and Code Deodorants for Code Smells by Nick Harrison for a grounding in Code Smells in C# I’ve always been tempted by the idea of automating a preliminary code-review for SQL. It would be so useful to trawl through code and pick up the various problems, much like the classic ‘Lint’ did for C, and how the Code Metrics plug-in for .NET Reflector by Jonathan 'Peli' de Halleux is used for finding Code Smells in .NET code. The problem is that few of the standard procedural code smells are relevant to SQL, and we need an agreed list of code smells. Merrilll Aldrich made a grand start last year in his blog Top 10 T-SQL Code Smells.However, I'd like to make a start by discovering if there is a general opinion amongst Database developers what the most important SQL Smells are. One can be a bit defensive about code smells. I will cheerfully write very long stored procedures, even though they are frowned on. I’ll use dynamic SQL occasionally. You can only use them as an aid for your own judgment and it is fine to ‘sign them off’ as being appropriate in particular circumstances. Also, whole classes of ‘code smells’ may be irrelevant for a particular database. The use of proprietary SQL, for example, is only a ‘code smell’ if there is a chance that the database will have to be ported to another RDBMS. The use of dynamic SQL is a risk only with certain security models. As the saying goes,  a CodeSmell is a hint of possible bad practice to a pragmatist, but a sure sign of bad practice to a purist. Plamen Ratchev’s wonderful article Ten Common SQL Programming Mistakes lists some of these ‘code smells’ along with out-and-out mistakes, but there are more. The use of nested transactions, for example, isn’t entirely incorrect, even though the database engine ignores all but the outermost: but it does flag up the possibility that the programmer thinks that nested transactions are supported. If anything requires some sort of general agreement, the definition of code smells is one. I’m therefore going to make this Blog ‘dynamic, in that, if anyone twitters a suggestion with a #SQLCodeSmells tag (or sends me a twitter) I’ll update the list here. If you add a comment to the blog with a suggestion of what should be added or removed, I’ll do my best to oblige. In other words, I’ll try to keep this blog up to date. The name against each 'smell' is the name of the person who Twittered me, commented about or who has written about the 'smell'. it does not imply that they were the first ever to think of the smell! Use of deprecated syntax such as *= (Dave Howard) Denormalisation that requires the shredding of the contents of columns. (Merrill Aldrich) Contrived interfaces Use of deprecated datatypes such as TEXT/NTEXT (Dave Howard) Datatype mis-matches in predicates that rely on implicit conversion.(Plamen Ratchev) Using Correlated subqueries instead of a join   (Dave_Levy/ Plamen Ratchev) The use of Hints in queries, especially NOLOCK (Dave Howard /Mike Reigler) Few or No comments. Use of functions in a WHERE clause. (Anil Das) Overuse of scalar UDFs (Dave Howard, Plamen Ratchev) Excessive ‘overloading’ of routines. The use of Exec xp_cmdShell (Merrill Aldrich) Excessive use of brackets. (Dave Levy) Lack of the use of a semicolon to terminate statements Use of non-SARGable functions on indexed columns in predicates (Plamen Ratchev) Duplicated code, or strikingly similar code. Misuse of SELECT * (Plamen Ratchev) Overuse of Cursors (Everyone. Special mention to Dave Levy & Adrian Hills) Overuse of CLR routines when not necessary (Sam Stange) Same column name in different tables with different datatypes. (Ian Stirk) Use of ‘broken’ functions such as ‘ISNUMERIC’ without additional checks. Excessive use of the WHILE loop (Merrill Aldrich) INSERT ... EXEC (Merrill Aldrich) The use of stored procedures where a view is sufficient (Merrill Aldrich) Not using two-part object names (Merrill Aldrich) Using INSERT INTO without specifying the columns and their order (Merrill Aldrich) Full outer joins even when they are not needed. (Plamen Ratchev) Huge stored procedures (hundreds/thousands of lines). Stored procedures that can produce different columns, or order of columns in their results, depending on the inputs. Code that is never used. Complex and nested conditionals WHILE (not done) loops without an error exit. Variable name same as the Datatype Vague identifiers. Storing complex data  or list in a character map, bitmap or XML field User procedures with sp_ prefix (Aaron Bertrand)Views that reference views that reference views that reference views (Aaron Bertrand) Inappropriate use of sql_variant (Neil Hambly) Errors with identity scope using SCOPE_IDENTITY @@IDENTITY or IDENT_CURRENT (Neil Hambly, Aaron Bertrand) Schemas that involve multiple dated copies of the same table instead of partitions (Matt Whitfield-Atlantis UK) Scalar UDFs that do data lookups (poor man's join) (Matt Whitfield-Atlantis UK) Code that allows SQL Injection (Mladen Prajdic) Tables without clustered indexes (Matt Whitfield-Atlantis UK) Use of "SELECT DISTINCT" to mask a join problem (Nick Harrison) Multiple stored procedures with nearly identical implementation. (Nick Harrison) Excessive column aliasing may point to a problem or it could be a mapping implementation. (Nick Harrison) Joining "too many" tables in a query. (Nick Harrison) Stored procedure returning more than one record set. (Nick Harrison) A NOT LIKE condition (Nick Harrison) excessive "OR" conditions. (Nick Harrison) User procedures with sp_ prefix (Aaron Bertrand) Views that reference views that reference views that reference views (Aaron Bertrand) sp_OACreate or anything related to it (Bill Fellows) Prefixing names with tbl_, vw_, fn_, and usp_ ('tibbling') (Jeremiah Peschka) Aliases that go a,b,c,d,e... (Dave Levy/Diane McNurlan) Overweight Queries (e.g. 4 inner joins, 8 left joins, 4 derived tables, 10 subqueries, 8 clustered GUIDs, 2 UDFs, 6 case statements = 1 query) (Robert L Davis) Order by 3,2 (Dave Levy) MultiStatement Table functions which are then filtered 'Sel * from Udf() where Udf.Col = Something' (Dave Ballantyne) running a SQL 2008 system in SQL 2000 compatibility mode(John Stafford)

  • a question in NS c programming

    - by bahar
    Hi I added a new patch to my NS and I've seen thise two errors. Does anyone Know what I can do? error: specialization of 'bool std::less<_Tp::operator()(const _Tp&, const _Tp&) const [with _Tp = _AlgorithmTime]' in different namespace from definition of 'bool std::less<_Tp::operator()(const _Tp&, const _Tp&) const [with _Tp = _AlgorithmTime]' and the errors are from this code typedef struct _AlgorithmTime { // Round. int round; // Fase. int fase; // Valore massimo di fase. int last_fase; public: _AlgorithmTime() { round = 0; fase = 0; last_fase = 0; } // Costruttore. _AlgorithmTime(int r, int f, int l) { round = r; fase = f; last_fase = l; } // Costruttore. _AlgorithmTime(const _AlgorithmTime & t) { round = t.round; fase = t.fase; last_fase = t.last_fase; } // Operatore di uguaglianza. bool operator== (struct _AlgorithmTime & t) { return ((t.fase == fase) && (t.round == round)); } // Operatore minore. bool operator < (struct _AlgorithmTime & t) { if (round < t.round) return true; if (round > t.round) return false; if (fase < t.fase) return true; return false; } // Operatore maggiore. bool operator > (struct _AlgorithmTime & t) { if (round > t.round) return true; if (round < t.round) return false; if (fase > t.fase) return true; return false; } void operator++ () { if (fase == last_fase) { round++; fase = 0; return; } fase++; } void operator-- () { if (fase == 0) { round--; fase = last_fase; return; } fase--; } }AlgorithmTime; template< bool std::less::operator()(const AlgorithmTime & t1, const AlgorithmTime & t2)const { if (t1.round < t2.round) return true; if (t1.round t2.round) return false; if (t1.fase < t2.fase) return true; return false; } Thanks
