  • How can I make sure my evening project code is mine?

    I'm a physicist with a CS degree and just started my PhD at a tech company (wanted to do applied research). It deals with large scale finite element simulations. After reviewing their current approach, I think that a radically different method has to be applied (they are using a commercial tool which is very limited). I'd rather base my research on an open source finite element solver and write a program which makes use of it. I'd like to develop this idea in the evenings, because that's the time that best suits me for programming (during the day I prefer reading and maths) and use it at a late stage of my PhD. I'd like to have the option to release my program as open source on my website as a reference, for future personal or even commercial (e.g. consulting) use. How can I make sure that my company doesn't claim the code ownership? I don't really I thought that a version control system could help (check out only in the evening). This would document that I programmed not during regular office hours (documented elsewhere). But these data can be easily manufactured. Any other ideas? I want to stress that I'm not interested in selling software. Jurisdiction is EU, if that matters. Thank you.

  • Change permission of files with the owner 'apache'

    Hay, i have some files on my server with the owner set to "apache", I'm not quite sure how this happened. Anyway, i need to change the permission of these files to 0777 so i can download/edit them. However i cannot. I'm using a 1and1 Linux server and use Plesk to administrate it. I have the ability to login via SSH. However, if i run chmod or chown i get a "permission denied" error, and if i try to sudo chmod or chown it says the command cannot be found. When i go to edit my domain details, i get this option Shell access to server with FTP user's credentials and have these options /bin/sh /bin/bash /sbin/nologin /bin/bash (chrooted) /bin/rbash Any idea's how i should go about changing the permissions or changing the owner? Thanks

  • Security: Unable to display current owner

    I have a user with local administrative rights on their Windows 7 64-bit box. They extracted a file from a zip file they downloaded with the Zip shell extension to their desktop on a non-encrypted or compressed NTFS volume. Unfortunately they cannot open it. I tried to take ownership of it and it just reports "Access is Denied" and for the current owner it reports "Unable to display current owner." At this point the file cannot be deleted, executed or modified. I have actually seen this exact same happen in Vista before, but I can't for the life of me remember how to fix it. Any ideas how it happened or how to fix it? I'd be happy just to delete it without a format at this point.

  • Wrong owner and group for files created under a samba shared directory

    I am trying to make writing to a shared samba directory work. I got a very weird problem. Now the shared directory is writable from a client machine. But the files created under the samba share directory have weird owner and group names. I am writing to the shared directory as user mike under the client machine, but the file created always has user and group name as steve instead... Does anybody know why that would happen...? Another thing I just noticed is that on the samba server, the files have owner and user name as samba, which I created for samba clients. Thanks a lot

  • Netbeans automatically changes the file owner when updating files

    We use Netbeans IDE 7.2 to edit our PHP files. In the Run Configuration it is configured as Remote Web Site to automatically save the changes on our web server (Centos OS 6.3). The problem is that every time it is updating the files the owner of the file is changed from apache:apache to userThatUploadedTheFile:users. This causes us problems with SOAP cache files that are configured with apache:apache ownership, and we need to manually chownit back to apache:apache. We've checked the "Preserve Remote File Permissions" checkbox, so the permissions are not changed, only the owner. Is there any solution to preserve the ownership ?

  • Finding the owner of an AWS access key + secret key pair

    I would like to have a simple solution (possibly in 1-3 plain API calls to AWS) to find the owner of an AWS access key. I have the password of the "root" AWS account and of course I can manage the users and credentials through IAM, but we have a lot of users and I don't want to look at them one by one looking for the owner of the key. So basically I have a working access key + secret key pair (in fact a couple of them), but I do not know which user's key is it and what rights are on it. What is the easiest way to do this?   • Correcting owner/permissions on damaged directory tree in linux

    I inadvertently made a backup copy of a directory recursively and forgot the -a (--preserve) switch when doing so. This damaged my backup directory (which contains data we need to access). The directory and all of its child folders and files comprise an installation of an application including postgress DB and solr files. The original copy was used to for a failed re-config attempt. Now I need to use the backup copy to start over, only the ownership of the backup copy is now root across everything and it is no longer usable (processes won't run due to ownership problems I created when I forgot the -a on the cp -r). I've re-installed a clean copy of the application into a 3rd location now (which has the correct owner/perms) and need to copy the owner/perms from this good directory over onto the damaged directory. What is the best way (if even possible) to do this. (I've Googled and seen things from perl scripting to setfacl/getfacl to do this but am unfortunately still confused). Apologies if this seems a dumb question. Thanks.

I'm basically using this code: $acct1 = New-Object System.Security.Principal.NTAccount('DOMAIN\Enterprise Admins') $profilefolder = Get-Item MyFolder $acl1 = $profilefolder.GetAccessControl() $acl1.SetOwner($acct1) set-acl -aclobject $acl1 -path MyFolder This will change ownership at the first level, but not for any subfolders or files. Is there a way to extend the scope to all content of MyFolder?

    I have a deep and complex file system where some files have been accidently written by root. I want to change the ownership of those files back to the original owner in one go. I am playing with commands like: find /folder -type f | xargs ls -l | grep "root root" but there is a lot of garbage coming out too. I want to make a list first and then change only the files in that list after confirmation.

    I'm currently working on a project in which at one point, the user may right click a button which brings up a contextMenuStrip. I am already able to find the owner accurately from that strip, and manipulate the button clicked as follows: Dim myItem As ToolStripMenuItem = CType(sender, ToolStripMenuItem) Dim cms As ContextMenuStrip = CType(myItem.Owner, ContextMenuStrip) Dim buttonPressed As DataButton = DirectCast(cms.SourceControl, DataButton) But now for the tricky part. Within this contextmenuStrip, I have a DropDown menu with multiple items in there. I would assume you would be able to work your way up the ladder doing casts like above in the manner of ToolStripDrowpDownItem > ToolStripDropDownMenu > ToolStripMenuItem > ContextMenuStrip Unfortunately, when I try to get the sourcecontrol from this menuStrip, it return Nothing. Any ideas on how I can get the button that was pressed from this toolStripMenuItem?     I want to setup a jailed SFTP account for a subfolder of another user's home folder, but want the owner of everything in that subfolder to stay the same, including new files and folders uploaded and created by the sftp user, while still allowing access to the files and folders of that subfolder as if the SFTP user was the parent user. rawny bawb-sftp /home/rawny <- rawny owns this /home/rawny/sftp <- rawny owns this too, but bawb-sftp can upload to it, edit files, etc bawb-sftp uploads a file /home/rawny/sftp/lol.txt rawny should still own the file, as if he made it in the first place, even though bawb-sftp was the one that uploaded it. Basically I guess I'm asking for an sftp jail that acts as a highly limited passthrough/puppet for another user?

    So, I just installed the node.js package from nodejs.org and I was poking around to see what it installed. Over in /usr/local/bin I saw this owner 24561. I see it in a few other places too. What is this? What does it mean?     I am using wordpress with wp-super-cache plugin. This plugin automatically created a cache folder in my site for storing the cached files. But unusually it created folder with owner/group 99 99. It was created automatically. Due to this, i am not able to delete that folder or change the CHMOD of that folder. This really a headache. I searched google, but none gave me a good answer. Please help me delete or change the CHMOD of that folder ? I am on Linux server.

  • BITS http download job fails to connect for owner Local SYSTEM account

    A service I have written that uses BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) to auto update itself is having a problem on some machines (Windows 7 so far). I have been investigating and have discovered that some of the jobs that my service adds to the bits queue are failing immediately with the error code 0x80072efd (a connection with this server could not be established). The is not problem with connecting to the server for the download as it works fine on the same machine using IE (or any other web browser) and other clients can connect and update from the same server. I tried using the BITSADMIN.exe tool to add the jobs manually and they worked ok. I then changed the account my service was running under to the network service account so the bits jobs would be created with a different owner and the jobs completed successfully. My question is I don't want to run my service as this account as it wont have the required local permissions, so how to I change the permissions of the local system user to allow it to download from the HTTP source, I'm not aware of any way of this being restricted for this account but it obviously is.

  • NTFS Folder has no owner, no permissions, can't be deleted

    Hi, I have a folder a 2003 member server which can't be deleted. Nothing has any permissions (domain admin and running up a cmd prompt as "nt authority\system" using psexec) - always "access denied". When I do a dir /q, the owner shows as "...". I've tried takeown.exe on the folder and also it's parent. The bad folder always reports "access denied". Also tried to reset using icacls, same thing. Explorer permissons has no sharing & security options or tabs. It works fine for other folders, even in the same directory. Bit stumped to say the least. g.

As usual scrum team was formed, management decided to appoint our analyst as Product owner since Client won’t be able to participate actively. Analyst was the one who worked closely with client for requirement analysis and specification drafting. Client doesn’t have the time to review first two releases. Everything went smoothly until, client saw third release; he wasn’t satisfied with some functionalities, and those was introduced by make shift Product Owner (our analyst). We were told to wait till design team finished mock-up of all pages and client checked each one and approved to continue working. Scrum team is there, but no sprints – we finished work almost like classic waterfall method. Is it a good idea to appoint scrum team member or master as product owner? Do we need to follow scrum in the absence of client/product owner participation?

    I created a sharepoint 2007 publishing site first using windows authentication, then extended it to another site using FBA. I created a FBA user and set it as site collection admin as well as top site owner. I also make application pool which the FBA site is running in to run with a user account which is within administrator group. But I encounter access deny error when browsing certain links using this site owner account. Is there other settings I need to configure? I found in the web.config, the impersonation is set to true. How does this affect the access rights?
