  • Remote Program (via ssh) suspends when leaving client computer

    I'm working with MATLAB on a remote computer logging in via ssh -X remotepc and running matlab like matlab &. When I start a long-running process and leave the computer, it seems to suspend the process (after like 30mins being away) such that there is nearly no progress over night. As soon as I come back and wake up the client, the remote process continues with the calculation. I can see this from the load-average values (uptime) Why is that and how can I change this behaviour?

  • Automatically connect to 3G dialup connection

    I have a notebook with an internal 3G modem (a HUAWEI Mobile Connect) which appears to the system as a dialup modem. When I want to connect to the Internet, I need to open the charms bar, click settings, network, the modem and "connect" to open the dialup dialog on the desktop. When the connection is interrupted for some reason, I need to repeat these steps. Is there a way to configure Windows 8 to automatically (and preferably silently in the background) connect with this modem at system startup and automatically restore the connection should it get interrupted? As an operating system which is developed for mobile devices, I would expect it to be able to somehow be able to manage a always-on 3g connection.

  • Safari, IIS and optional Client Certificates

    I've a ASP.Net Webapp running on IIS7.5. The Webserver is configured to accept Client Certifcates. Unfortunately Visitors with Safari Browser are unable to view the Page.   • Network driver for Hyper-V restore from Windows Home Server

    I have backed up Windows Server 2008 running virtualized on Hyper-V to a Windows Home Server 2008 SP1 (I know I should have backed up the VHD instead). Now I need to restore the contents of the VM from WHS. I have created a restore CD ISO and used it to create a new VM. It all works as advertised up to the point where the restore process wants to load the network drivers (it only finds 4 disk drivers on the restore CD. but no network drivers). So I created a virtual floppy and copied the contents of 'Home Server Drivers for Restore onto it. But no luck! I have tried moving the 4 subdirectories into the root of the floppy, but that didn't work either. Finally, I started another instance of the WS 2008 to identify the network driver that the virtualized instance is using (%WINDOWS%\system32\drivers\netvsc60.sys) and copied that file onto the virtual floppy, without success. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get networking working on a Hyper-V instance running off the Windows Home Server Restore CD? UPDATE: As suggested by delenda, I have added a legacy network adapter to my VM, and indeed I now get a network driver listed! However, the WHS it still not found, even after entering the home server name manually. PHS

  • Permission denied on network share

    i have a Windows 8 host system running a virtual(hyper-v) Debian6 client with an lamp environment. My development environment runs under Windows and I mapped the folder with my php files to a network drive so Apache has access to them.(mount.cifs //pc/share /var/share/) This far no problems - I see my app on windows in the browser. The problem is, I can't write stuff in php to the share folder - everytime i got a permission denied message in my error logs. For testing purpose i tried to change the directory permissions of /var/share with chmod -R 777 /var/share without success. Now Iam a little bit stumped.. has anyone an idea how to solve this?

  • Problem accessing MICROSOFT##SSEE database (Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16.)

    After an unexpected server shutdown due to a power failure, I can no longer connect to the internal windows database MICROSOFT##SSEE which is hosting Central Admin for my SBS 2008 server. The log shows: Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. [CLIENT: <named pipe>] I've tried to connect using the SQL Management studio (connecting to .pipemssql$microsoft##sseesqlquery) but no luck. The SQL Server Configuration Manager doesn't show a entry for 'Protocols for MICROSOFT##SSEE' (but shows it for 2 other database hosted on the same SQL server 2005 Express edition. I have tried to restore the master.ldf and mastlog.log files from a backup, but the issue persists.

  • Sending 10,000 emails?

    (I don't know whether to submit this to SuperUser or StackOverflow.) My friend and I have a subscriber list -- strictly opt-in, for people interested when we release new projects -- and we may want to send out a first email this year. How would one best send an email to over 10,000 people? Perhaps there is a good, I suppose paid service, which would do this for one? The key being that the emails ought arrive, with good chances of not being immediately labeled as spam due to the sender or something (as it's definitely not spam). When I simply send emails from my 1&1 server, they often immediately make it into the spam folder, even though when sending the same email through say Google Appspot, it arrives fine. FWIW, the email addresses are not yet verified (people simply signed up for the list by providing an email, and optionally a name). Analyzing what bounced may be a pro. BTW, we will provide an opt-out link with every mail. Thanks for any pointers, and sorry if this doesn't fit to ServerFault 100%!

  • SharePoint Workflow: how to update the item without triggering the workflow again

    I have a SharePoint workflow which is running whenever the item changes. The workflow communicates with an external REST service. If the service returns a string, I want to update one of the field values with that string. Unfortunately, this update will trigger another instance of the workflow for this item once the current workflow terminates. I end up with an infinite loop! How I can prevent this from happening? SPListItem has Update(), UpdateOverwriteVersion(), and SystemUpdate() methods but none of them seem to prevent subsequent workflows from being triggered. I could inspect the last modified timestamp of the item and terminate the workflow if the last update happened within a certain timespan, but I am looking for a more robust solution.

    I am trying to synchronize the horizontal scroll position of 2 WPF DataGrid controls. I am subscribing to the ScrollChanged event of the first DataGrid: <toolkit:DataGrid x:Name="SourceGrid" ScrollViewer.ScrollChanged="SourceGrid_ScrollChanged"> I have a second DataGrid: <toolkit:DataGrid x:Name="TargetGrid"> In the event handler I was attempting to use the IScrollInfo.SetHorizontalOffset, but alas, DataGrid doesn't expose IScrollInfo: private void SourceGrid_ScrollChanged(object sender, ScrollChangedEventArgs e) { ((IScrollInfo)TargetGrid).SetHorizontalOffset(e.HorizontalOffset); // cast to IScrollInfo fails } Is there another way to accomplish this? Or is there another element on TargetGrid that exposes the necessary IScrollInfo to achieve the synchronization of the scroll positions? BTW, I am using frozen columns, so I cannot wrap both DataGrid controls with ScrollViewers.

    I am trying to add the path /_vti_bin/Lists.asmx to my ASP.NET MVC 2 web application. I am registering the route as follows: routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.asmx/{*pathInfo}"); routes.Add(new Route("_vti_bin/Lists.asmx", new ListsHandler())); where ListHandler is defined as: public sealed class ListsHandler : IRouteHandler { #region IRouteHandler Members public IHttpHandler GetHttpHandler(RequestContext requestContext) { throw new NotImplementedException(); } #endregion } But when I start the MVC application and try to navigate to http://localhost:8888/_vti_bin/Lists.asmx, I get an HTTP 404 error, rather than an exception raised. Is this even possible in MVC? Do I need to add an Lists.asmx ASPX web service file to my project in a particular place (I cannot create the _vti_bin folder in the Visual Studio project)?

  • Using Linux vs Windows for development

    On my servers I run everything on Linux/ Apache, but for offline preparation before upload of the projects I'm using Windows (Vista) with a local Apache/ WAMP, PHP, Python, GD_image installation and so on. My question, would it be much easier in terms of setting up a good environment if I were to use Linux, e.g. Ubuntu distribution, as development OS for these things? Would you know some pros and cons when it comes to Windows vs Linux in terms of web development? (As I'm using mostly web apps these days, switching the OS might be less of a problem. I would need a good replacement for my image editor, though, as I prefer Corel PhotoPaint and PSP4 over Gimp, last time I tried.)

I want to build up a documentation "how to deal with problem x" - basically a decision tree: Is the problem in part x of the web site? Yes: Is the problem occurring in all browsers? Yes: ... No: ... No: ... The documentation should be written and extended by the people using it. Do you know of any book/article describing how that is best done, or is there a software (Mac OS X) that helps doing that?

    Having read Martin Fowlers "Feature Branch" and Flickrs "Flipping Out" (http://www.liip.to/flippingout) I guess there are a few guys out there who do: all (or most) development on Trunk release Trunk regularly (assuming updating your web site) not-yet-approved or not-yet-finished features should not be visible/have no impact on the regular user I've got 2 questions: granted - Flickr's article seems to work for "frontend code". But how is it cleaned up? Don't the ifs pile up? how does this work for the more "backend part"? Thinking of database changes, or model refactoring. Working with ifs doesn't seem to work - and copy-pasting classes for small adaptions also seems awkward. Are there any articles out there answering these 2 questions?

  • Syntax error results in blank page

    I am new to wicket and trying to get some things working. One thing that annoys me a lot is that I get a blank (0 chars of text) page whenever there is a syntax error on a page. Striped down example: Test.html header stuff: doctype ... html ... head ... body ... <span wicket:id="msgTest" id="message">MSG</span> footer stuff: /body ... /html Test.java public class Test extends WebPage { public Test() { add(new Label("msgTest", "Hello, World!")); } } This will output the page as expected. Now, lets introduce an error: header stuff: doctype ... html ... head ... body ... <span wicket:id="msgTest2" id="message">MSG</span> footer stuff: /body ... /html I changed the label-id to something different then what the source-file expects. If I run this code I get the already mentioned blank page. However, for every request to a page with such a syntax error I get an error report in the log-file of around 1000+ lines. This error-report is basically just wicket-generated html of a page which describes the error. This makes me wonder why wicket isn't displaying the error-stuff instead of the blank page. I'm not very experienced with wicket but to me it somehow looks like wicket is having trouble rendering its own error-page code. It would be nice to know how one goes about finding syntax-errors with wicket. Reading through a 1000+ line error-report for a small error like a misplaced character seems a bit tedious.   • [R] multiple functions in one R script

    Hi, I guess it's a stupid question, but I don't get it :-( I wrote an R script, which creates heatmaps out of xls files. I am calling this R script with a Perl system call and pass over all the arguments. This all works fine. Now I wanted to make the R script less confusing by writing different functions in the R script, for example: args <- commandArgs(TRUE) parsexls <- function(filepath) { data <- read.xls(...) assign("data", data, globalenv()) } reorder <- function(var) { data <- data[order...] assign("data", data, globalenv()) } When I want to call the functions with parsexls(args[1]) reorder(args[2]) nothing happens. But when I place the parsexls(args[1]) in the script between the two functions shown above, the file is parsed correctly! The reorder(args[2]) seems never to be read. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?     I'm using JavaScript to load an image into my Canvas element in Firefox. This works fine for local images, but throws a security exception for external images. Is there any way to avoid this security exception, one that does not involve my server having to act as proxy to load the image locally (because that would stress my server)?   • Visual Studio: Where are global settings stored?

    Hi, sometimes after logging out and in again, my settings in Tools/Options/Projects and Solutions/VC++ Directories are lost. To investigate the problem I tried to find the file where Visual Studio (2008 Team) stores those settings on disk. (Or is it in the registry?) Can anybody point me to where it is? Thanks a lot!
