  • What can I do to encourage teams to lighten up? [closed]

    I work with a geographically distributed team (different timezones) with people from various cultures and background. Some of us have never met each other in person but we communicate with each other over phone, chat and email almost on an hourly basis. Most of our meetings and discussions are dead serious and boring. What's worse, any attempt at humor is not very well received because of cultural differences. I feel that we are all taking our work a bit too seriously. We don't shy away from painful arguments, nasty emails and heated discussions when things go wrong but never attempt to develop camaraderie or friendships in better times. I would like to know your experiences with such situations and what, if anything, did you do to lighten things up at workplace.

  • How to Convince management that a specific product training is important to QA?

    I am leading a QA team of 10 people. we have been received the request for a training of a ETL dataware housing tool for QA, Support and Development. But however the management does not feel that it is important for QA to be involved in such a training as it is support and development team who will be involved ih developing or fixing the issues in the product. How do I convince the management that this training is very important from the QA perspective as this is the team that will find bugs and which will reduce the maintainance cost?

  • why the next button doesn't work in Joomla! 2.5.4 Installation [closed]

    I was trying to insall the Joomla! 2.5.4 Installation. But I got stucked in the first step only. The button doesn't respond on clicks. I tried previous version like 1.5.26. But here also the process got hang after the 3rd step. In the 4th step the next button doesn't work as before. what to do, I am in dilemma. I am using XAMPP server for my localhost,please guide me, I lost complete one day in installing Joomla.

    I currently have a website and blog and using a limited web hosting plan. When I upload images on my hosting server it consumes a lot of bandwidth and space. So I was thinking of hosting images on some-other image hosting site and direct linking it to my site. I found out few sites like imageshack, photobucket, tinypic, imgur. However, I see all have certain restrictions. The features i am looking for are as follows: 1. At least 10gb space 2. At least 500gb bandwidth (bec I hav very high traffic) 3. Very high speed even during heavy load like 1000 visitors accessing every hour. 4. Ultra reliable servers (99.9% uptime) 5. Privacy control 6. Must not ever delete image if inactive 7.   • java developer who wants to raise skill level for better career growth [closed]

    I have an experience in Java language and in JEE related Framework for about 5 years. In these 5 years i have worked on Core java, Spring, Hibernate, JPA, Struts 1. Now just to be prepared for the near future, i am thinking to learn some new programming language or some new technology, this will help me out to be a more elligible employee. So my question to you is, which new technology or language should i learn, my target is for next 3 years. So just in case if Java fades out (thought it won't) than i can jump on to this newly learned stuff. Where should i start from ? Should i learn some other language in JVM like Scala, Clojure, Groovy, JRuby ? Or should i learn some altogether different language like Python or Erlang, Perl ? Or new technology which is related to NoSQL, like MongoDB, Hadoop, CouchDB. Or learn few current happening things in market like RoR, Node.js, LessCss or Sass, Coffee Script ? Can anybody give me some hint,

  • Ubuntu 12.04 Battery problem

    I have my laptop ( Dell Inspiron 14R) on dual boot with Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7. While using Windows 7, I used to get about 2.5-3 hours on battery fully charged (with my cellphone connected for 3g Internet). The battery is almost 2 years old. But in Ubuntu 12.04, I'm getting only about 1-1.5 hrs on battery. I tried installing jupiter, also tried some tweaks that were mentioned in the forums, like editing the grub file. But nothing seems to work. I am not sure if any app is draining the battery. The one application that I use always is firefox. It's always open. Is there any way I could get at least 2.5 hrs of battery time?

  • How will the search rank get impacted if i move my mobile website to a single page application?

    I have two different versions of my site. A desktop version and a mobile optimised version. That is for the same url the server renders different html for different user agents. I had been using vary header for this scheme as recommended by Google. However, now i want to move the mobile website to a single page application for several reasons. I want to know if google stops seeing anything on my mobile web version but the desktop version continues to work as it is, then how would the search rank be impacted given that mobile web gets more traffic than the desktop version.   • Where I can find /sbin/hotplug in my kernel source

    I am reading hotplug events. And I want to enable automatic loading unloading module, when a new device is added. For that I read that kernel does it using /sbin/hotplug script, but I am not able to find it in my source code, can someone help me out where can I find it? Also when I tried to do cat /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug there is nothing coming in output, I am running the same kernel which I downloaded and built.

  • In what ways can I test an image slideshow javascript code?

    I have a slideshow of images (and links) on a page. These images are part of a JSON response to a request sent after the page loads. The slideshow is set to play at an interval of 2 seconds. The slideshow can be paused, played over, and all other controls a normal slideshow would have. As a Rails dev, I proposed cucumber but the javascript guys in the team are not comfortable with ruby. I saw some cucumber for javascript libraries coming up, still in experimental stage. I checked out jasmine and related tutorials but all I could get from them is how I can carry out any internal functional testing such as credit-cart validation, etc. - which I think could actually be handled in unit testing? (Screw the research I did and) How should I go about testing this and similar components?

  • Unexpected behaviour when dynamically add node in HAproxy server

    I wanted to use HAProxy for my web app for load balancing purpose. I am trying to add a new rabbitmq node dynamically in HAProxy server using command : haproxy -p /var/run/haproxy.pid -sf $(cat /var/run/haproxy.pid). I am doing tcp connection mode with leastconn balance algorithm in load balancing. What is expected is when there is 3 connection in one rabbitmq, I add a new rabbit server in HAProxy server. so the next connection would pass to 2nd rabbitmq server which is not happening in my case. It distributes the connection in haphazardly manner.     I want to format an SD card from my Linux virtual machine. I have a built-in SD card reader in my laptop. I tried using VirtualBox and VMware Player and installed Ubuntu 10.04 guest. None of them are showing the SD card reader as a device. I can access the SD card from the Windows host. I am not interested in solutions using shared folders as I want to access the SD card as hardware (it should show up in /dev). I basically want to set up the SD card for BeagleBoard, but I don't want to install physical Ubuntu in my PC.

  • Dump output from REPL

    I'm writing SML programs, and I'd like a way to quickly see the output from running a program in the REPL without actually running the REPL (to quickly see if a program has syntax errors - I plan to use this as a make program for .sml files in vim to view the output inside vim).. Currently, I have this: sml file.sml | echo -e "\004" So it runs the program, and then echoes Ctrl-D to exit the REPL. The problem is that its too quick to send the Ctrl-D key, so there is no output. I tried this too: sml file.sml | sleep 2 ; echo -e "\004" But that isn't doing it either. Any ideas on how I can get a dump of the output from the REPL?

  • 2 accounts in safe mode ?

    When I start my laptop in safe mode, I have 2 accounts displayed, i.e. Administrator and one as R122, but when I start it in normal mode, only the R122 account is being displayed and not the Administrator one. My R122 account is password protected, so once I had a problem in installation and had to go to safe mode for some reason, I was shocked to see 2 accounts. I had once formatted my laptop with a friend of mine. Why are there 2 accounts in safe mode and only 1 in normal mode ?
