• Google indexing pages very slowly [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Older post not indexed, new post indexed right away? 1 answer Is there anything I can do to speed up the time it takes to index my pages? It's currently indexing them on it's own time I believe which is every 2 - 3 days and when working in music and media I need to have the latest post fairly quickly. My robots.txt file is. User-agent: * Disallow: /wp-admin/ Disallow: /wp-content/ Disallow: /wp-includes/ sitemap: http://vipes.us/sitemapindex.xml If I am understanding this correctly, I would put this URL into Google http://vipes.us/sitemapindex.xml. But in doing so I still only get some of my pages indexed?

• Amnesic Environment

  My team is looking for a technical term which may or may not exist. We are trying to describe an environment, such as a database, which has been built up over time with little or documentation about the change process that has gone into it. Generally these are legacy systems who's original developers have long since moved on and they are in such a tangled and unmanageable state that the only way to recreate the environment, say for testing purposes, is to copy it and do your best guess at re-configuring it for its new purpose. So far the best term we have come up with is Amnesic, such as "setting up the new test environment is going to be a challenge because it is an amnesic db." However, we are still not quite happy with the term and were wondering if a better and/or more accepted term for this situation exists.

• Kids don’t mark their own homework

  During a discussion at work today in regard to doing some thorough acceptance testing of the system that I currently work on the topic of who should actually do the testing came up. I remarked that I didn’t think that I as the developer should be doing acceptance testing and a colleague, Russ Taylor, agreed with me and then came out with this little pearler: Kids don’t mark their own homework Maybe its a common turn of phrase but I had never heard it before and, to me, it sums up very succinctly my feelings on the matter. I tweeted about it and it got a couple of retweets as well as a slightly different perspective from Bruce Durling who said: I'm of the opinion that testers should be in the dev team & the dev *team* should be responsible for quality Bruce makes a good point that testers should be considered part of the dev team. I agree wholly with that and don’t think that point of view necessarily conflicts with Russ’s analogy. Yes, developers should absolutely be responsible for testing their own work – I also think that in the murky world of data integration there is often a need for a 3rd party to validate that work. Improving testing mechanisms for data integration projects is something that is near and dear to my heart so I would welcome any other thoughts around this. • Running PCIE card with the on board video card as well in Windows 7

  I have an emachines Windows7 PC. I am trying to run the on board video card along with the dual DVI card I installed in the PCIE slot. In CMOS it shows the on board card as disabled and it will not let me enable it? Its greyed out so I cant even highlight it to change anything. I have done this before in XP on a few different machines so I know its possible, Any idea?

• Sharepoint: Multiple Alternate Access Mapping Collections for Single Web Application

  Hi All, We have a SharePoint MOSS 2007 installation which has two different external hostnames. When inspecting the setup I've noticed that there are two Alternate Access Mapping Collections mapped to the same web application. Each AAM collection contains one url mapped to the default zone. I can't see how AAM collections are mapped to web apps or even how to create a new AAM collection. I've always thought that there was just a one to one mapping between web apps and AAM collections. Does anyone have any idea as to how you would create such a situation? Cheers Russell

• DNS Does Not Register at Off-site Locations

  First of all, let me give you the specifics of our setup: Windows Small Business Server 2008 Domain w/ all applicable updates on the DC The DC does DHCP for the main site The DC does DNS for all sites 3 sites including our headquarters where the DC is located All sites are connected through OpenVPN SSL tunnels terminated by an Untangle box at each site The 2 remote sites us the Untangle box as a DHCP server for their subnet, which assigns the DC as the primary DNS server Collection of Windows XP and Windows 7 workstations connected to the domain Here's the issue: All of the workstations at the main site register with the DNS server on the domain controller fine. As they grab an IP from the DHCP server, it updates the DNS server with the new host record. I have 2 systems (each at different remote sites) that fail to register with the DNS server. I've attempted the following troubleshooting steps: Confirmed the network adapter is using the DC as a DNS server Confirmed 2-way traffic is possible between DC and workstation Verified the "Register with DNS server" setting was checked in the adapter properties Attempted ipconfig /registerdns and received no errors For the time being, I have setup a DHCP reservation for these systems and manually created a host record. This seems to work fine, but I need a solution for any new systems that go out there.

• What service do you use for music on hold?

  This may not be a sysadmin question for some, but it is definitely a hurdle I have to jump as the sysadmin for my company. We recently rolled-out a company wide VoiP system (Switchvox, to be exact) that has come preloaded with some royalty-free music on hold. Our customers have been complaining that the music on hold sounds like "funeral music." This may be the case (although I wouldn't want it played at my funeral), but it is all we have and we aren't willing to be sued over using music that isn't properly licensed. So, that brings me to the question asked in the title -- what and/or how do you provide decent music on hold? I'm assuming many people here use a PBX that allows customized music, so this has to apply to many of you. We've been looking at some sites that allow you to download royalty-free music for a one-time fee, but the music seems...lame. Something like a one-year subscription from ibaudio.com seems to be the best bet so far. Have you been able to discover something a little more mainstream for a decent licensing fee? Thank you. EDIT: Our PBX allows the playback of MP3 and OGG files, but does not allow streaming of a live audio source, Internet-based or otherwise. It also does not allow the use of a "line-in" source such as a CD player or radio. Don't let this stop you from sharing your setup, though. I'm interested in hearing what everyone uses!

• FAVICON: Favicon now showing up

  I'm using a .png favicon file and it is not showing up on my site. Doing a grep, I see the following in home.htm which looks right for me(I have also confirmed it's in the HEAD section within home.htm): home.htm: <link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/png" href="favicon.png"> The favicon.png file is in the same directory as the home.html file. • Does Linux GZip Zip the File in Place or create a new file

  I have a 1.5TB size text file that I need to gzip down, the current drive it is on has little to no space left. I have another drive with 400G left on it. My question is, if I gzip the file, will it require more space on the drive that it resides? Or can I direct the output to the drive with available space?

• Windows 7 boot order and locations

  Hi, Long story short, a program that shouldn't have been run on this machine has been, and it's created a naughty .sys file that is being loaded right after pci.sys (as determined by NBTLog.txt) I've had a look a BCDEdit, EasyBCD and a number of Registry keys but I can't seem to determine where about winstart.exe actually gets the list of sys files to load from! The sys file itself is running in high elevation and appears to be defeating all attempts to remove it; I could (probably should) make a Linux USB boot disc and use it to delete the sys file, but I'd really appreciate understanding the mechanics here. ((FWIW: the problem stemmed from a sibling running a Trainer for some game; he has been suitable chastised))

• Create a new domain with the same name of a trusted domain

  I have a domain blah.com that was aquired a while back by my company foo.com. I set up a two way trust between the two domains, but now I want to move their servers into our forest, while keeping the domain name of blah.com. Is this possible? What things do I need to consider when doing this? I know I can't move the domain from its forest into our forest. blah.com is a 2003 native domain/forest foo.com is a 2008R2 domain/2003 forest.

• Auto-response on a mail non universal group

  Four domain users are part of global security group [email protected] running on Windows Server 2008 Standard and Exchange 2007 as a mail non universal group. Our goal is to create an auto-responder rule, or template that fires at sender. I have created a mail-enabled public folder, with owner permissions for each group member. I have also set up a rule template (response) and I am a little unclear as to the send as permission set, or where to set that up. Can someone please tell me if I am on the right track?   I am new to bash, and I am creating a script that loops through the files in a directory and based on part of the filename, does something with the file, so far I have this: #!/bin/bash DIR="/Users/me/Documents/import/*" for f in "$DIR" do $t=?????? echo "Loading $f int $t..." done so $f will output something like this: /Users/me/Documents/import/time_dim-1272037430173 out of this, I want time_dim, the directory can be variable length and -1272037430173 is a fixed length (it's the unix timestamp btw). What is the best way to go about this?

• Altering the Windows 7 grouping thumbnail preview

  I like the windows 7 grouping behaviour for multiple similar windows, except when I have multiple Explorer windows open. In this case, showing thumbnails of each open explorer window is next to useless, and I would like to know how to either: Disable thumbnail display completely (but preserve the grouping behaviour) Disable thumbnail display for a subset of programs (all explorer.exe instances) Change the number of similar programs that are open before the grouping behaviour falls back on a more sensible text preview when hovering over the taskbar icon (currently 14 or over) I don't particularly want to disable any other features of windows to get this behaviour, so disabling the theme compleletely isn't what I want to do. I definitely want to keep the grouping behaviour. Its just those thumbnail previews I would like to alter. • Domain controller policies having administrative issues with program installations

  I have an issue with our domain and policies where a user needs administrative rights to install a program and someone provides the credentials for the 'run as admin' or 'run as other user' it will always show an error: Cannot find specified file on the drive. So we cannot install programs for our employees. How I fix it is I add the user to administrators, force a policy update, have them reboot, run as administrator and install it that way. Then remove them after and update the policy. Another way was to right click the install file (.exe/.msi) and add the user and administrator as an owner with full control. Only works when we have the installation file. I have no idea how to fix this and I can't find a relevant thread or QA about this problem. I can only find users having issues on their home computers not on a domain. Any help and threads to read would be great!

• How can I find the names of AD Group policies that a user/pc is using?

  I am having trouble locating some settings in group policy so I can make changes due to the convoluted nature of our policies. What I would like to be able to do is go to a specific PC and see what group policies are being applied, so I can focus on those policies. My goal would be to clean up the GP's a bit, while allowing me to "walk the tree" to see what people have implemented and what is worthless. Thanks. EDIT: In this specific case, I am looking to find which GP maped drives are configured in. (User Configuration -- Preferences -- Windows Settings -- Drive Maps)

• Automatic subdomain wildcard for DHCP-DDNS additions?

  I'm running dhcp-4.0.2 server and bind-9.6.1-P3. When a new Mac OSX DHCP client with the name "harry" connects to the network, the DHCP server gives it a lease, and adds appropriate A & PTR records via DDNS. This works fine; harry.my.domain points to (e.g.) 192.168.1.3, the Mac client knows that its name is harry.my.domain, 192.168.1.3 points back to harry.my.domain, and all that is great. Now I want *.harry.my.domain to resolve to 192.168.1.3, and I don't want to have to go in and add wildcard records into zone files. I want the Mac to connect to the network, and have the hostname and wildcard subdomain resolve to the IP address it's been given. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!
