• No Sound from Shared Media

  I have a shared media folder that I have all of my mp3's in. When I try to play them using Ubuntu, I get no sound, but the media player (Rhythmbox, Exaile, etc) display that they are playing the file, it looks like everything is playing but no sound. I have checked and rechecked the volume levels of the system and each application and I see no issues. If I move a file to the local drive, it plays just fine. I do sound checks while the file is playing and I get audio (front left, front right) from the test but not from the media file that I am playing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Best practice for comments above methods in a grails application?

  I'm writing a grails application and am not sure what the best practice is with regard to comments outside of method blocks. I've done a bit of research and there seems to be conflicting views on how and when these sort of comments should be used. In lots of source code I have seen there seems to be comments above every method detailing what that method does. I'm not sure if grails should be differnet? My question is should I have a comment above each method in my controllers, services and domain objects? i.e /* * This method displays the index page */ def index(){ render view : "index" }

• Fresh Ubuntu 12.10 install no desktop or wing bar

  After a fresh installm of ubuntu 12.10 (complete erase) after logging in it appears i have no taskbar or much of anything, although i can still execute my terminal with CTRL+ALT+T. i looked around a little, seems i'm not the only person who has had this problem. I found here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=12303179#post12303179 From there, i found myself here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-updates/+bug/1068341 I followed precisely the instructions provided which were: this problem is solved this way Switch to a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1). Login as your username. Install linux source (sudo apt-get install linux-source) and headers (sudo apt-get install linux-headers-3.5.0-17-generic). Uninstall nvidia driver - this depends on which version you installed (sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current or sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current-updates or sudo apt-get remove nvidia-experimental-304). Reinstall nvidia driver (sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates). If it successfully installs, restart the computer (sudo shutdown -r now). Source Desktop does not show when I installed nvidia drivers! I have rebooted, and i am still having the exact same problem. so i back at square one. can someone help me please? this is my room mates computer and i told him i was "fixing" it and now i feel like i've ruined it. • LAMP: How do I set up http://myservername.com/~user access?

  Been trying to Google this, but I can't figure out good search terms to find any info about what I need, since I don't really know what it's called. I'm pretty much being thrown to the wolves to figure out how to set up a LAMP server. We had someone who knew how to do it, he set one up and then quit. It was set up so that when I went to "http://{myservername}.com/~travis" it showed the contents of my /home/travis/public_html folder. This worked fine, then we lost power and the server restarted (I know, battery backup, but this is a dev server in a dev building so it's OK). Now, the browser can't find that URL. I also need to know how to set this up on a new server, so instead of wasting time diagnosing this problem (probably just something dumb I did messing with settings or something), I really need to know how to set this up from scratch. • Firefox Start page stay white

  Hi, I'm a Firefox user since several years so I know it but today I had a strange problem. I installed the last stable version of Firefox (3.5.5) on a computer but when I launch the browser the page stay empty (blank). In the settings I set the startpage as Google but nothing to do. When the browser starts in the address bar it is well written google.com but the page remains blank. I must click on the button in the address bar so that the site appears. I've never had this problem with Firefox, it's strange. Thanks

• Move Firefox user settings to another folder on same machine

  Due to company restrictions where I currently work, My windows users folder %USERPROFILE% is space restricted. I get a warning that I must delete files before I can log off. Because of that, I have moved everything else out of my profile folder (maven repository, IntelliJ configuration & cache). I need to tell Firefox to put userprofiles somewhere else on my machine (like for instance C:\ff_profiles\ ). How do I do that?

  I have recently discovered Digital Ocean and I have found it to be a relatively nice experience for small staging servers, and the thought occurred to me, why am I paying $267~ for a server on Rackspace (40GB RAM, 160 GB Drive, 2 vCPUs, 400 Mb/s) when Digital Ocean offers a server for $40 (40 GB RAM, 60GB Drive [storage is not a concern of mine], 2 vCPUs, ?Mb/s)? Does Rackspace offer some kind of obvious advantages in Transfer speed/bandwidth? My applications are small startups that for the immediate future will only have about 200-300 concurrent users at once.

• Simulate analogue steering wheel input from third party software like xPadder

  So. I currently have a steering wheel connected to my htpc. Since it wont work / get recognized by all games i play. I use xpadder to play for example Grid 3. As far as i have understood, it simply presses the associated arrow key when i turn the wheel. What i would like, is a software to simulate more and more frequent key presses of the arrow keys the more i turn the wheel. Example: Tilting a little - 100 presses / second Tilting more - 200 presses / second Tilting max - Hold down key Because what i currently do with the wheel is constantly shaking it a bit right, when i just want to turn a little bit right and so on. • Wireless controllers vs wireless usb hub

  For my htpc i currently only have a steerin wheel as a controller. This is wired and it looks really bad having extended usb wires from the tv to the table. However im thinking of bying some new Gamepads and now comes the question. Should i buy wireless ones or wired and connect them to a wireless usb hub? Having a wireless hub would let me manage my gamepads easily from the couch. A wireless hub also allows me to connect other things that are not input devices from the couch. However im wondering if wireless usb hubs may not be made for input devices in the way that they may not have 100% uptime and probably some delay. Am i right about this?

It's as if something changed in RVM, or I installed some package that made compiled versions of ruby perform significantly worse. I know this is a tough question to answer, but what things should I look into in order to track down why the performance has suffered so much? edit I just attempted to install with ruby-build and the version installed was fast. Something rvm is doing to build it in my environment is slow.

• OpenAM throwing 302 0 behind haproxy, nginx

  I'm having some issues with my deployment and was wondering if you can help. My set up is as follows: 2 OpenAM servers are set up behind a load balancer (HAproxy). The load balancer is set up behind two reverse proxies (nginx). The two reverse proxies are ser up behind another load balancer (haproxy). So a request will go through Haproxy nginx Haproxy openam I can access the OpenAM web console through the reverse proxies without a problem. Everything works fine at this level. However when I access openam through the load balancer in front of the reverse proxies Openam throws a 302 error. The funny thing is however I can access the host/openam/UI/Login and login successfully. I even get the cookie and have access to my apps that are set up. However immediately after the login OpenAM throws a 302 redirect. I'm puzzled and cannot figure out what is going wrong. Does anyone have any idea? • Dashboard Devmode w/o "Always on Top" Possible?

  I am using (and loving) OS X's Dashboard in dev mode ('defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES') which lets you put the widgets on your desktop directly. The only downside is the widgets are "always on top". So all windows end up going under the widgets instead of above. Is there any way to disable this?

• Windows 7 boot from downloaded .iso

  Downloaded Windows 7 .iso off the net and want to install from USB key on old laptop (previously/still running XP) that has no CD/DVD drive. Here's what I've got so far: Read the instructions in this post: http://kmwoley.com/blog/?p=345 , which were quite straight forward and clear. Properly formatted USB key with another laptop (this one running vista), also with no DVD drive wasn't sure how to make the USB bootable, since my .iso was downloaded and I have no DVD drive. Any help would be much appreciated!!

• VPS IP redirects to website instead of the IP directory? CentOs 6

  So before I started putting websites on my VPS, I could access the IP directly and it would access the html folder in the /var/www/ area. But ever since I placed websites on the VPS, I can no longer access that HTML folder, it goes to the first domain I have listed on the httpd.conf file. Is there a way I can make the IP its self look like a website in the httpd conf file? I tried to construct it like the other websites but httpd would stop working.

• How do I set up failover for a single web server using two ISPs?

  I have one web server and two WAN connections (1 cable, 1 DSL). DNS is run offsite, and points to the IP address assigned by one of the ISPs. How can I have the second connection take over when the primary one fails? I have seen that it is possible to have two A records, each pointing to a different IP, but it has several problems. What's the real solution to this? I imagine this is a very common issue. Thanks in advance!

• how to lower CPU usage for Ableton Live 8 in Mac OSX 10.6.8

  While running Ableton Live 8 after a project gets to a certain size, the audio starts to get a bit choppy and distorted. My levels are fine and is not the cause of the lag and chop. I have samples set to 1024 and the high quality button selected which I need to hear the sound. I always lower these when I'm recording audio with my mic but I need to have these turned up to be able to mix master the song. Anything I can do to lower the CPU usage? It sucks because I can't even use my iZotope Ozone plug-ins because of their CPU usage and they are AMAZING plug-ins that I would love to use.

• probems using ssh from cron

  I am attempting to automate a script that executes commands on remote machines via ssh. I have public key authentication setup between the machines using ssh-agent. The script runs fine when executed from the command prompt. I suspect my problem is that cron isn't starting the ssh-agent due to it's minimalist environment. • Error setting up Blackberry Internet Service with Outlook Web Access

  I'm trying to set up Blackberry Internet Service to connect to our Windows SBS2003 outlook web access. I've tried every possible combination of credentials by I always get the same error: An error occured during email account validation. Please check your information and try again. If the error persists please contact your System Administrator. The fields are the following: Outlook Web Access URL: http://mail.domain.com/exchange (I've also tried just using the IP address http://000.000.000.000/exchange with no effect). User Name: JohnDoe (same as OWA login / domain username - I've also tried DOMAIN\JohnDoe) Email Address: [email protected] Mailbox Name: This one confused me a little bit, but it seems it should be the same as the domain username (eg. JohnDoe). I've also tried DOMAIN\JohnDoe, and a number of other things. No matter what I do, I get the same error message. At this point, I'm basically just trying things, because I don't really know how this service is supposed to work. Does anyone know what causes this particularly vague error message, and what I can change either in my email settings or on our exchange server to resolve this?

• Streaming Flash Video - getting my feet wet

  I'm working on a project that will involve having a couple thousand short videos online. I haven't done anything with online video before and this is all a bit new to me, so I am looking for some general advice... I would like to use Flowplayer, and I would like to encode the videos as H264s. I am enamoured with Flowplayer's slow motion feature, which if I understand correctly, is only available using a Wowza server. I'm wondering: Is it advisable to use a delivery network of some sort? (Flowplayer seems to have a partnership with HDDN, and recommends them. http://www.hddn.com/) Or would I be better off purchasing Wowza and installing it on our own server? (At first glance, it looks as though signing up with a network like HDDN is much simpler, but perhaps there are problems that come along with this...?) Any tips / warnings of imminent peril would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• How do I get Thunderbird to open an ICS attachment directly in Lightning's calendar?

  I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird 9.0.1 with Lightning 1.1.1. Is there an easier way to import an ICS file attached to an email than saving it to disk, then in Calendar going to File -- Open? If I select "Open with Thunderbird" from the save dialog, it just opens a new mail message and attaches the file to it. (I did see this older question, but it refers to much older versions of Thunderbird and Lightning) Update: I've updated to 10.0 and 1.2, respectively and it still doesn't work right. • How can I preview various Google services in Firefox?

  With iGoogle shut down I haven't been able to replicate my homepage through other services. I'm not asking for a generic replacement for iGoogle, but how to accomplish a specific use case whether through a third-party dashboard, browser extension, or some DIY solution. I need an interactive Gmail inbox, Gmail Tasks, and Google Calendar in the same Firefox tab. If hosted by a third party, they need to authenticate safely using the Google account that I am logged in with. Other widgets would be useful but I only require those Google services. I'm using Gmail itself for now but there is hardly room for the other widgets in the sidebar. Both Google Sites and igHome won't reliably load the services, especially Tasks. Netvibes requires raw login information for third-party services.

• Windows 7 FTP Connection Ignores File Type Associations

  I have an FTP connection active through the Map Network Drive option in Windows 7 64-bit. When navigating the remote directory, I see no way to edit files. Windows is completely ignoring file-type associations and "opens" everything with my default browser. Is there any way that I can simply edit these files? I'm open to suggestions of other software as well, but from what I can see, NetDrive doesn't work with 64-bit.

• Run script when shutting down ubuntu before the logged in user is logged out

  I'm writing a script to backup some local directories on a unix machine (Ubuntu) to a samba drive. The script works fine and I've got it running at shutdown and restart using the method described at http://en.kioskea.net/faq/3348-ubuntu-executing-a-script-at-startup-and-shutdown It works by placing the backup script into the /etc/rc6.d and /etc/rc0.d directories. However there is a problem. After looking at the scripts logfile it seems to be run after the user is logged out. We are using LDAP authentication and when the user logs out, the system cannot backup to their samba share. Does anyone know of anyway to run the script before the user is logged out?

• iPlanet Authentication provider

  Good day. I have stepped into project that requires a server migration that would change the means of authentication for our CAC/PKI SSL enabled website. We are using iPlanet 7 and Oracle Directory Server Enterprise 7 as our LDAP server. The situation is that the site is still CAC/PKI enabled, but at the firewall. The information we want to authenticate against is now in the http header. How do I configure iPlanet and LDAP to authenticate against the header instead of SSL? Thanks. Edit, Can this be done with IIS keeping the Directory Server EE LDAP in tact or is the ACL iPlanet only?
