• TightVNC (or any VNC) client windows scaling

  Hi, I am currently using TightVNC to connect to multiple remote hosts in LAN. I start 16 VNC instances, set Scaling by: Auto (in connection options display), set Hextile encoding, and then select all windows and use Tile Horizontally, which covers my entire screen with VNC screens. It all works sort of nice, except that desktop interaction is really slow when there are more then 4 VNC clients. My question is, does VNC client (not just TightVNC, but any compatible client) support some kind of smart scaling option, so that client tells server something along the lines of: "Okay, I'm displaying your entire screen in a window size 300x225 px, so can you please start sending encoded images on that resolution?", at which point interactiveness of open connections dramatically increase, and when I decide to go full screen on some connection, client and server re-negotiate and server starts sending full resolution images again? • Determine display or VNC session based on PID

  I frequently VNC into a server where we run many concurrent computationally intensive matlab processes. Sometimes, one of my processes misbehave, which I can see from top, but I have a hard time figuring out which VNC session it's running on, or more specifically, which display it's running on. Suppose I see that PID 8536 looks like a resource hog, and I want to investigate. Because it's a matlab session, I know there is likely an IDE open somewhere, and I want to check to see if anything important is happening before I kill it. We've solved this somewhat awkwardly in the past by identifying which PTY 8536 was launched from, then looking at a process tree to figure out things launched in that context, scrolling up, and seeing the VNC initialization. Seems like there must be a better way to go PID - X Display (or VNC Session).

  I need to remotely access and use my work computer a few times a week. I want to use VNC because of the price. I've used VNC before, mostly on my own network, where it's fast. However, VNC over the internet is incredibly slow. Even at 256 colors and lower, with Aero turned off, it is unbearably slow. I recently used Ammyy Admin to connect to do something requiring a quick reaction time. Ammyy was really fast, with almost no lag, and it was running in full color with Aero on! How can I make VNC faster, like Ammyy is? I'd use Ammyy, but I would probably run into the 15hr/month limit pretty quickly. Any suggestions? [EDIT] I'm currently using UltraVNC.

• Solaris 11 VNC Server is "blurry" or "smeared"

  I've been annoyed by quality of the image that is displayed by my VNC viewer when I visit a Solaris 11 VNC server. How should I describe the image? Blurry? Grainy? Smeared? Low resolution? Compressed? Badly encoded? This is what I have gotten used to seeing on Solaris 11: This is not a problem for me when I view Solaris 10 VNC servers. I've finally taken the time to investigate, and the solution is simple. On the VNC client, don't allow "Tight" encoding. My VNC Viewer will negotiate to Tight encoding if it is available. When negotiating with the Solaris 10 VNC server, Tight is not a supported option, so the Solaris 10 server and my client will agree on ZRLE.  Now that I have disabled Tight encoding on my VNC client, the Solaris 11 VNC Servers looks much better: How should I describe the display when my VNC client is forced to negotiate to ZRLE encoding with the Solaris 11 VNC Server? Crisp? Clear? Higher resolution? Using a lossless compression algorithm? When I'm on a low bandwidth connection, I may re-enable Tight compression on my laptop. In the mean time, the ZRLE compression is sufficient for a coast-to-coast desktop, through the corporate firewall, encoded with VPN, through my ISP and onto my laptop. YMMV.

  I am confused about what vnc reflector does. From the documentation http://sourceforge.net/projects/vnc-reflector/ I got that it's proxysitting between real VNC server (a host) and a number of VNC clients. My confusion is : 1. Does it make any changes to the coming stream from server 2. Does it make 1 connection with server to connect to many client or the connections are proportionate. Documentation is not clear in this. If anyone can help me?

  I have started Tightvncserver on Lubuntu 12.04 via the command $ tightvncserver -geometry 800x600 -depth 16 :2 VNC server successfully started and I got message like follows. New 'X' desktop is gateway:2 Starting applications specified in /home/dolv/.vnc/xstartup Log file is /home/dolv/.vnc/gateway:2.log Then I've successfully loged in from remote PC using realvncclient. Trying to start Chromium-browser from menu... no luck. There was one more attempt: I opened the LXTerminal from menu. Trying to start is from terminal with the command /usr/bim/chromium-browser & it returned the message like follows: Xlib: extention "RANDR" missing on desktop :2 I have also discovered that after my two attampts the chromium-browser has created 2 new windows on the host on which was session running on display :0 The Question: How to make the browser start on that display from which it was called (in my occasion from vnc session display)?

• Authenticate VNC session with ConsolKit?

  I have a linux machine running Fedora 16 in a cupboard. It has no screen or keyboard. I connect to it using a combination of vnc and ssh. Recently, after an update, I have had issues with authentication on the machine. If I vnc to it, the kde desktop pops up an error dialog every few minutes saying Authorization failed. Failed to obtain authentication. If I plug in a USB drive it fails to mount, Dolphin reports an authentication issue again. I have had limited success finding the solution. AFAICT, it is an issue with ConsoleKit deeming me to be a non-local user so it prevents authentication. • Remote mouse pointer not visible in VNC

  I used VNC desktops as a kind of collaboration server, as shared planning and pair programming environment for a long time. Now my latest iteration uses a KVM guest running Fedora 17 "Beefy Miracle", the Cinnamon desktop environment and an X11VNC server. The X11VNC server is automatically started with the desktop environment using the following command: x11vnc -localhost -many -shared -display :0 -bg My problem is that depending on the VNC client, the mouse pointer of the remote system which is shown through VNC is not synchronized to my client. I really need this, so I can see what my partner is doing on the desktop. When using Vinagre 3.2.1 on Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) or Vinagre 2.3.0.3 on Debian Squeeze (6.0) and I don't have my local mouse pointer inside the VNC view, I cannot see the mouse pointer of my remote system, nor its movement. When using TightVNC on Windows 7, I can recognize a mouse pointer trace for very short amounts of time after moving the mouse, but it is not clearly visible. Using UltraVNC on Windows 7 the mouse pointer is clearly visible all the time. With Gnome 2 I never had any problems with remote pointer synchronization, using exactly the same clients. I suspect this could have something to do with Cinnamon's dependency on 3D acceleration. On the other hand, it doesn't change anything to start Cinnamon's fallback environment Cinnamon 2D. Update: Same effect when I use Gnome 3.

  I'm wanting to control my laptop from my desktop. I've been doing this with VNC (PC desktop to Macbook pro) - but I want to remove the 'viewing' aspect of it on my desktop. I.e. I don't want to have the viewing screen on the desktop.. but be able to control the mouse/keyboard via VNC. Is this possible? I'm using realVNC viewer and connecting to the default in-built VNC server on Mac OS X Lion. Cheers for any help.

  I have a t1.micro Amazon Linux AMI instance running. Now, I want to access it using VNC so that I get the GUI. I came across Guacamole and the installation instructions for the server side configuration. So, I get it that we need to setup Apache Tomcat on the Linux machine and then install all the required dependencies, edit the configuration files for Tomcat. But, how do I access it from Windows? What is the client side configuration? From what I understood so far, instead of using a VNC Client like TightVNC or VNCViewer, we can use the Web Browser to access the Amazon EC2 instance. I am using Windows 7 as the client. I would like to access the Amazon Linux AMI (t1.micro instance) over VNC so that I get the GUI.

  Im having troubles while im trying to connect from linux to Windows CE, via VNC viewer.   I've search most of the topic around here in @SuperUser and around most of the webs they can easily access Windows uing Mac OS X but I have a question can I access my Mac using Windows? I've activate my screen sharing on my Mac OS X and I can use another Macbook to access it no problem but once I use TightVNC or UltraVNC and any VNC base program non of them really worked for me. So is there any alternative to VNC to give me option to access my Mac using VNC or something like that? Thanks.

  Hi, I set up VNC server with xinetd. Also configured GDM so that XDMCP is enabled. VNC connection seems okay, but GDM login screen is not shown. Instead I can only see old bare X screen (gray meshed background and X-shaped mouse pointer), which I can't do any interaction with it. What can I do to fix the problem? No log is written below /var/log/. • How to resolve problematic vnc/xming clipboard interaction?

  I often have both a VNC client window and several X windows open (via Xming) at the same time on my Windows XP desktop. When this happens, the X windows, especially emacs and firefox, often lock up or behave erratically. I am pretty sure I have narrowed this down to contention over the clipboard. I wasn't really able to find any options controlling this behavior in either Xming or VNC. Is there a solution to this problem? Right now, I have to close VNC when I am actively using emacs...

  So after connecting to a vnc server via vnc viewer to my desktop (remotely), Is it possible to know whether the monitor connected to the CPU is switched ON or not. Simply put, from command prompt how do you know whether monitor is ON/OFF from command line. Here, Basically I am bit worried about privacy as my monitor can be viewed by anyone while accessed remotely. Any solution?   I'm wondering if I can connect to my wife's mac via VNC while she is logged in herself. I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't possible, although the machinery should be there with "fast-user-switching" support. So, if I create a profile for myself and I log in (and enable the VNC server/sharing for my profile), and then my wife switches to her own account which she uses on the physical console. Will I be able to use the mac ?

• enable vnc on xen without having to shut down all the domains

  The last guy forgot to enable vnc connections on our Xen blade and I need to install a windows domain, is there any way I can enable vnc without shutting down half our company? From what I can tell I need to edit xend-config.sxp which would likely require a restart of xend, which means shutting down all the running domains. Is there any way around this? thanks :)
