  • Prevent Changing the Screen Saver and Wallpaper in Windows 7

    - by Mysticgeek
Sometimes you might not want users to have the ability to change Screen Savers and Wallpaper on Windows 7 workstations. Today we look at how to prevent them from changing either one or both. You might administer computers in your home or small office and find it annoying when users continuously change the wallpaper and Screen Savers to something obnoxious. A lot of times they might be inexperienced users and download these so-called “wonderful and free” Screen Saver/Wallpaper packages from shady sites that include loads of Spyware. Preventing users from changing them is another helpful tool to avoid wasteful time spent switching things back. Prevent Changing Screensavers & Wallpaper Using Group Policy Editor  Note: This method uses Group Policy which is not available in Home versions on Windows 7. Open the Start Menu and enter gpedit.msc into the Search box and hit Enter. When Local Group Policy Editor opens, navigate to User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Control Panel \ Personalization. Then in the right column double-click on Prevent changing desktop background. Now check the radio button next to Enabled, then click OK. Back on the Group Policy Screen, double-click on Prevent changing screen saver. In the next screen select the radio button next to Enable, click OK, then close out of Group Policy Editor. Now when a user goes into the Personalization section, the Desktop Background hyperlink is now grayed out and inactive. Notice the message One or more of the settings on this page has been disabled by the system administrator at the bottom of the section. If they click to change the Screen Saver, an error message will pop up letting them know the function is disabled. Prevent Changing Screensavers & Wallpaper Using a Registry Hack You can also make a couple Registry changes to prevent users from changing the Wallpaper & Screen Saver…which will work on Home versions of Windows 7. Before making any Registry changes make sure you back it up first. Open the Registry by typing regedit into the Search box in the Start menu and hit Enter. First we’ll start with the Wallpaper. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System and create a new String Value and name it Wallpaper. Then modify the Value data to point to the location of the Wallpaper you want it to always be. Where in this example it’s our main wallpaper on our local drive…then click OK. Now let’s make sure they can’t change the Screen Saver. In the same Registry location, we need to make a new DWORD (32-bit) Value. Give it the Value name of NoDispScrSavPage and the value data of “1” and click OK. Close out of the Registry and restart the machine or simply log off then back on again for the changes to take effect. Results For the Wallpapers, a user can still go in and see the selections, however if they try to change it to something else… It will just go back to the Personalization screen and no changes will be made, as we set the value to only be the background we specified. If the user tries to make a change to the Screen Saver, the hyperlink will be grayed out and inactive, and the message One or more of the settings on this page has been disabled by the system administrator will be displayed at the bottom of the section. Conclusion If you’re tired of users changing the Wallpaper and Screen Saver, and want another way to help avoid Malware, locking down these settings can help a lot. Again, before making any changes to the Registry, make sure to back it up. These settings should work in Vista and XP as well. • Set a Video as Your Desktop Wallpaper with VLC

    - by DigitalGeekery
Are you tired of static desktop wallpapers and want something a bit more entertaining? Today we’ll take a look at setting a video as wallpaper in VLC media player. Download and install VLC player. You’ll find the download link below. Open VLC and select Tools > Preferences. On the Preferences windows, select the Video button on the left. Under Video Settings, select DirectX video output from the Output dropdown list. Click Save before exiting and then restart VLC. Next, select a video and begin playing it with VLC. Right-click on the screen, select Video, then DirectX Wallpaper.   You can achieve the same result by selecting Video from the Menu and clicking DirectX Wallpaper.   If you’re using Windows Aero Themes, you may get the warning message below and your theme will switch automatically to a basic theme.   After the Wallpaper is enabled, minimize VLC player and enjoy the show as you work.     When you are ready to switch back to your normal wallpaper, click Video, and then close out of VLC.   Occasionally we had to manually change our wallpaper back to normal. You can do that by right clicking on the desktop and selecting your theme.   Conclusion This might not make the most productive desktop environment, but it is pretty cool. It’s definitely not the same old boring wallpaper! • Windows 8 dual monitor wallpaper slideshow

    - by Aierou
There have been a number of improvements with multi-monitor compatibility in Windows 8, but how would one go about configuring wallpaper slideshow settings for a second monitor? For instance: I want to display one album on my second monitor, and another on my main monitor. How would I set this up? Also, is there a way to make the slideshow display the same image on each monitor, rather than it displaying two different images from the same slideshow?

  • [android] setting wallpaper through code

    - by Javadid
hi Friends, I was trying to make an app which also had the facility to let user select wallpaper he would like to set. I have managed this by calling the Gallery Intent. Once the user selects a specific image, the data path of the image is returned to me which then i preview to the user by setting the image onto an imageview. The problem crops up when the image size (and/or resolution) is greater than what android expects. This results in failure of my module. And as if this was not enough, wen the user tries to select some other wallpaper(and in my test case the "other" wallpaper was also of size 700kb) then the app crashes with the "OutOfMemoryException"... Helppp me here guys!!! For Gallery Intent i use: Intent intent = new Intent(); intent.setType("image/*"); intent.setAction(Intent.ACTION_GET_CONTENT); startActivityForResult(Intent.createChooser(intent, "Select Picture"),SELECT_IMAGE); For setting the wallpaper i use: InputStream is = getContentResolver().openInputStream(Uri.parse(uri_returned_from_intent)); Bitmap bgImage = BitmapFactory.decodeStream(is);//OutOfMemory error thrown here setWallpaper(bgImage); So i have 2 problems to deal with: How to crop the image before setting it as wallpaper... Cant understand y OutOfMemoryException is thrown, coz none of my image sizes exceed even 1mb... and i guess the VM budget in case Of N1 is 24Mb if m not mistaken...

  • How do I customize desktop wallpaper slideshow via XML?

    - by Pithikos
I spent some time and tried varioues things but nothing works. Here's what I have tried so far: Making a new folder /usr/share/backgrounds/mywallpapers and add my own background-1.xml in there. Copying a bunch of my own wallpaper files into /usr/share/backgrounds/ Copy /usr/share/backgrounds/Contest/background-1.xml to /usr/share/backgrounds/ I logged out and in and no changes in Appearance app. I have heard about Wallch but I don't want some app running in the background all the time. I'm not even sure Wallch will work with Gnome 3. I also tryied gnome-3-wp (Gnome 3 Wallpaper Slideshow app) but it just seems broken for Oneiric Ubuntu 11.10. Anyone has a solution?

  • Windows 3 Animated Background/Desktop/Wallpaper

    - by Synetech
In the summer of 1995, I visited some family in Los Angeles. My uncle had a computer with Windows 3 (or some version thereof since Windows 95 had not been released yet). In Windows 3, there was no desktop or wallpaper like in later versions; instead you could set it to a simple pattern (still possible in later versions before XP) like hounds-tooth or bricks (interestingly, there seems to be next to nothing available on the Internet about this anymore; no screenshots and almost no pages). I recall being amused when I found a program (on the still young “world-wide web”) that would actually let you set an animated background. It was smooth and fluid and was quite an amazing thing at the time. If I recall correctly, it had several built-in animations including one of a light-orange-pink background over which storks flew towards the top-left, possibly with some light stuff floating in the “background” (they were actually animated and flapped their wings, not simply translated coordinates). The storks were somewhat simplified, black-line drawings. Over the years, I’ve tried finding it again a few times but never could. Worse, it’s become harder and harder over time as new programs came out and polluted the search results. I’m hoping that someone remembers this software and knows some useful information like the author or where to download it. (No, it’s not ScreenPaper. That was created in 1997 to let you set a screensaver as the Windows 95/NT4 background. This was at least two years earlier for Windows 3 and I’m almost certain it had these animations built-in—I don’t recall any stork screensavers for Windows 3.)

  • Is it possible to quickly set all spaces to the same wallpaper?

    - by LBRapid
It's great that Lion allows different spaces to have different wallpapers, but I have not found an easy way to get them all to use the same wallpaper. The only way I've accomplished it so far is to either manually change the wallpaper for each space or to close all of the spaces (except the one that has the wallpaper I want) and reopen them. Anybody have a solution to allow me to quickly set all spaces to the same wallpaper?

  • How To Customize Wallpaper in Windows 7 Starter Edition

    - by Asian Angel
If you have the Starter Edition of Windows 7 installed on your netbook you may be sick of looking at the default wallpaper. With Starter Background Changer you can access other customization options with ease. Before There is not a lot that you can say about the singular default wallpaper included with the Starter Edition…it just kind of sits there all boring like. Installing Starter Background Changer Since the installer part of the program is in French we have the entire set of install windows shown here with the appropriate buttons highlighted to get you through the whole process without any problems. Using Starter Background Changer Once the installation process has finished you will simply see a quiet screen with no desktop icons or Start Menu entries visible. Now if you are wondering at this point “Did the program finish installing or did it install at all?” the answer is yes. Right click on your desktop and you will notice a new entry on the Context Menu…the same one that is included in the other editions but not Starter. Time to have some fun… The Personalization Window will open maximized but we have reduced it here for our screenshots. You have four regular categories to choose from in the lower part of the window: Wallpaper, Colors, Sounds, & Screensavers. The first category that we chose for our example was Wallpaper. As you can see here the main display area (My Collection) has no wallpapers showing at the moment. You can use the drop-down menu to access your My Pictures Folder or browse for a different location. Notice that you can choose how the image fills the screen and set up a timed wallpaper slideshow at the bottom. Any picture (or pictures) selected will be added to the My Collection display for easy access the next time you open the window. Once you choose a picture click on Validate the modification to set the wallpaper for your desktop and return to the main window. When you return to the main window you will see a preview for your selection. At this point you can simply close the window or make further adjustments in the other categories. Starter Background Changer provides easy one-stop access to other customization areas. We started off with Colors… Followed by Sounds… And finally Screensavers. Before you do close the main window you can take a quick look at the Options if desired. We did set Optimization of the images to High on our system. Quick and easy wallpaper satisfaction. We did pin the Program Window to our Taskbar…nice if you prefer this method as opposed to the Desktop Context Menu. Conclusion If you have been longing for a way to change the wallpaper in Windows 7 Starter Edition then you will definitely want to give this program a try. Goodbye boring default wallpaper! • How do I fix Windows 7 rotating wallpaper?

    - by acmshar
On my PC with Windows 7 Professional x64, I have a folder of images that I use for my theme. Under Personalization (right click on desktop - Personalize) it is the only theme under 'My Themes'. Repeatedly, I have noticed the background has stopped rotating and is stuck on one image. When I go to Personalization, I notice a new theme has been created called 'Unsaved Theme' with one image from my folder and is the current theme. To fix this, I set the theme back to my folder and delete the single image theme. How can I prevent this from reoccurring as it has happened multiple times?

  • How do I remove nitrogen back to Ubuntu's default wallpaper manager?

    - by jonalmeida
I was using nitrogen when I using openbox, but now I'm trying to stop it from setting the wallpaper so I can use the Ubuntu default (i.e via the System Settings panel). What I've done so far: sudo apt-get remove nitrogen Removed nitrogen configs at ~/.config/nitrogen/ Checked to make sure that draw_background in /desktop/gnome/background was checked So far it still doesn't work. I can't right-click on the desktop, so I'm guessing that I've missed something to get Nautilus back to drawing icons on the screen. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

I have one of those underpowered netbooks with Lubuntu. I also have an iPod Touch. I'd like the best of both worlds. So I would like to create an active html wallpaper with beautiful little squared icons to launch my webapps through Chromium/Firefox. I've read a bit, but it looks like there isn't really anything that would allow for that. Why? Does anyone have any other alternatives (apart from buying an iPad)? :)

This is how my desktop looks like after moving Firefox window arround: The background just doesn't redraw, there is no wallpaper. It is like that since update to 12.04 - it was the same in 11.10 but I had special intel drivers then that fixed this problem. Doesn't seem to be fixed in 12.04 even with the ppa I was using then. What can I do? I couldn't find anything about it on Google because results were unrelated. :( I have Samsung RF-511 notebook with Nvidia card turned off - so it's using only Intel from i7.

Here is my code: settings.xml <PreferenceCategory android:title="@string/more"> <PreferenceScreen android:title="@string/more"> <intent android:action="android.intent.action.VIEW" android:data="market://search?q=pub:PSP Demo Center" /> </PreferenceScreen> <ListPreference android:persistent="true" android:enabled="true" android:entries="@array/settings_light_number_options" android:title="@string/settings_light_number" android:key="light_power" android:summary="@string/settings_light_number_summary" android:defaultValue="3" android:entryValues="@array/settings_light_number_optionvalues" /> <ListPreference android:persistent="true" android:enabled="false" android:entries="@array/settings_speed_number_options" android:title="@string/settings_speed_number" android:key="speed" android:summary="@string/settings_speed_number_summary" android:defaultValue="10" android:entryValues="@array/settings_speed_number_optionvalues" /> <ListPreference android:persistent="true" android:enabled="false" android:entries="@array/settings_rotate_number_options" android:title="@string/settings_rotate_number" android:key="rotate" android:summary="@string/settings_rotate_number_summary" android:defaultValue="8000" android:entryValues="@array/settings_rotate_number_optionvalues" /> </PreferenceCategory> </PreferenceScreen> Settings.java public class GraffitiLWPSettings extends PreferenceActivity implements SharedPreferences .OnSharedPreferenceChangeListener { public static final String SHARED_PREFS_NAME = "wallpaper_settings"; protected void onCreate(Bundle icicle) { super.onCreate(icicle); getPreferenceManager(). setSharedPreferencesName(GraffitiLWP.SHARED_PREFS_NAME); addPreferencesFromResource(R.xml.settings); getPreferenceManager().getSharedPreferences(). registerOnSharedPreferenceChangeListener(this); } protected void onResume() { super.onResume(); } protected void onDestroy() { getPreferenceManager().getSharedPreferences() .unregisterOnSharedPreferenceChangeListener(this); super.onDestroy(); } public void onSharedPreferenceChanged(SharedPreferences sharedPreferences, String key) { } } wallpaper.java public class GraffitiLWP extends Wallpaper { private GraffitiLWPRenderer mRenderer; public static final String SHARED_PREFS_NAME = "wallpaper_settings"; public Engine onCreateEngine() { mRenderer = new GraffitiLWPRenderer(this); return new WallpaperEngine( this.getSharedPreferences(SHARED_PREFS_NAME, Context.MODE_PRIVATE), getBaseContext(), mRenderer); } } renderer.java public class GraffitiLWPRenderer extends RajawaliRenderer { private Animation3D mAnim; private BaseObject3D mCan; private SettingsUpdater settingsUpdater; //private SharedPreferences preferences; public GraffitiLWPRenderer(Context context) { super(context); setFrameRate(20); } public class SettingsUpdater implements SharedPreferences .OnSharedPreferenceChangeListener { private GraffitiLWPRenderer renderer; public SettingsUpdater(GraffitiLWPRenderer renderer) { this.renderer = renderer; } public void onSharedPreferenceChanged( SharedPreferences sharedPreferences, String key) { preferences.getInt("wallpaper_settings", 0); renderer.setSharedPreferences(preferences); } } public void initScene() { System.gc(); ALight light = new DirectionalLight(); light.setPower(this.preferences.getLong("light_power", 3)); light.setPosition(0, 0, -10); mCamera.setPosition(0, -1, -7); mCamera.setLookAt(0, 2, 0); mCamera.setFarPlane(1000); ObjParser parser = new ObjParser(mContext .getResources(), mTextureManager, R.raw.spraycan_obj); parser.parse(); mCan = parser.getParsedObject(); mCan.addLight(light); mCan.setScale(1.2f); addChild(mCan); Number3D axis = new Number3D(0, this.preferences.getLong("speed", 10), 0); axis.normalize(); mAnim = new RotateAnimation3D(axis, 360); mAnim.setDuration(this.preferences.getLong("rotate", 8000)); mAnim.setRepeatCount(Animation3D.INFINITE); mAnim.setInterpolator(new AccelerateDecelerateInterpolator()); mAnim.setTransformable3D(mCan); setSkybox(R.drawable.posz, R.drawable.posx, R.drawable.negz, R.drawable.negx, R.drawable.posy, R.drawable.negy); } public void onSurfaceCreated(GL10 gl, EGLConfig config) { settingsUpdater = new SettingsUpdater(this); this.preferences.registerOnSharedPreferenceChangeListener( settingsUpdater); settingsUpdater.onSharedPreferenceChanged(preferences, null); super.onSurfaceCreated(gl, config); mAnim.start(); } public void onDrawFrame(GL10 glUnused) { super.onDrawFrame(glUnused); mSkybox.setRotY(mSkybox.getRotY() + .5f); } } I know the code is long but I would greatly appreciate any help that someone could give me.   • How do I change the wallpaper of Windows 7 Starter Edition?

    - by V. Schreiber
Is there a way to change the desktop wallpaper in Windows 7 Starter Edition? I wanted to do that on my new netbook, just to find out that there is no "Customize" option in the control panel. Microsoft obviously wants to keep the netbook users rather rigidly from customizing their machines. It isn't even possible to edit the picture itself in the C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\Windows\ directory, due to lack of rights. From what I can tell only the user "Trusted Installer" would have enough rights to do so... Update: With your help I found two programs that are able to bypass Microsoft's limitations: Starter Wallpaper Changer (Thanks to Sopan and javier. I'm using this program now) Wallpaper Changer for Windows 7 (Thanks to Sathya) (This one was taken down for EULA limitations)
