  I can't seem to find a guide or reference on how to configure the 'indicator-applet' (aka MessagingMenu) that came about in the 9.04 release of Ubuntu. It's that little mail icon that lists messaging apps. I can find docs about what it should do, people complaining about how it works, references that the API changed in 9.10, but not much on how to change the configuration. The MessagingMenu design spec page says that the config file should be at $HOME/.config/indicators/messages/applications/, but there's nothing there on my install (9.10).

• How to zoom the desktop under Gnome?

  I want to use my PC from the couch, but from there, I cannot see what I'm clicking. I enabled Enhanced Zoom Desktop in CCSM and it looked like it does what I want. But when "Sync mouse" is enabled, the whole desktop pans around with the tiniest mouse twitch, making me seasick. When I disable it, the mouse pointer is mapped to the non-zoomed desktop, which means that when I click on a button I am seeing on the desktop, the click registers somewhere else, and I practically cannot do anything while under zoom. Is there a better solution (does not have to involve CCSM)? Clarification: I am looking for something which zooms the entire desktop, not for a detached magnifier window.

• Gnome-panel disappearance in Ubuntu 10.10

  Just today, after about a week of somewhat normal running (I'm a total beginner in Linux and the level of amazingly stupid problems I encountered made me go nuts), today my panel disappeared (the one with Applications/System menus, you'd call it taskbar in Windows). Also, Alt+F2 doesn't work and Ctrl+Alt+Backspace has no effect (I'd think it's supposed to do something). I tried the solution posted here: Panel doesn't show at startup at Ubuntu 10.04 No luck, didn't change absolutely anything. I also couldn't find the .gconf and .gconfd folders using search, so couldn't try that option. There were ones that had same names but without the dot though, but there were several so I didn't risk. What could possibly be the reason for this? All I did yesterday was try to install some updates (another extremely dumb problem - doesn't allow to install even the official updates - "insecure sources" or smth like that, tried fixing it with some tutorials on the net but in the end it worked only for half a day and went back to refusal mode :@) and very few tools from the Ubuntu Software Center, but nothing that would change system settings just by installing it.

  In Nautilus "list view" subfolders can be opened by clicking the "+" icon next to it. Would it possible to open all subfolders recursively in one click? I tried various combinations of ctrl/alt/shift-clicking but none seems to work.

• How can I get Gnome-Do to open in multiple X Screens?

  Hi, I LOVE Gnome-Do (the Ubuntu version of QuickSilver). The only thing is that I have several monitors, which are all completely separate X Screens (I.E. I can't move windows between them), and Gnome-Do will only open in ONE of those monitors. If I go to Monitor/Screen #2 and press Super+Space, the Gnome-Do window appears in the first monitor. Is it possible to get a separate Instance of Gnome-Do on each Screen? P.S. Using profiles may be a work-around...I've managed to get multiple instances of Firefox by using "firefox -P my_first_screen"...anything like that available in Gnome-do?

• NFS Issues in Gnome

  I mount NFSv4 export via /etc/fstab and mount and use the shared folder in nautilus. There are two issues: When I copy a large file (around 4 GB) to the NFS server, the progress bar rapidly goes to 2 GB and then basically stops moving. But the copy s still in progress - it is just not displayed well When I disconnect from the network without unmounting the nfs share, nautilus freezes.   Previous used Ubuntu Gnome with Compiz but for my basic spec intel macbook (4 years old) its a little too heavyweight. So for now Im back on my macbook with os x, but now considering going back to Linux. Im looking for a window manager that has the following properties: 1) Supports virtual desktop (need 4 minimum) 2) Works well with multi monitors - can move an app with shortcut from one monitor to the other (on same virtual desktop) 3) Can remember window position (i.e. open vim on 2 monitor) - however must coerce everything back to first window when 2nd screen is unplugged 4) Keyboard shortcut friendly 5) Not too hard to install 6) Works well with minimum hardware such as integrated graphics Please suggest and share your experiences

• Desktop directory disappears in gnome-terminal, then appears again, but all files in it are deleted

  I am able to see my Desktop and with all its various links and files. But in the terminal when I try to access the Desktop directory: cd ~/Desktop I get: bash: cd: /home/administrator/Desktop: No such file or directory Then I find I am unable to access any of the files on the Desktop when I click on them although the file icons are there. Then the icons disappear after my clicking on them. Then I am able to access the Desktop directory in the terminal but the directory is empty i.e. all the files/folders have been deleted. What's going on? How can I fix this?

  I have a powered 7 port hub connected to my Ubuntu box and it does nothing. The devices (zip drive and web cam) work direct, but aren't recognized through the hub. This worked fine in Windows 7. • Can't login to Manager App in Tomcat 6.0.18

  Folks, I can't login to the manager app (localhost:8080/manager/html) in my Tomcat. More specifically, it asks for my username and password, and the ones supposed to be correct aren't accepted. Here's what I already checked: I tried editing my conf/tomcat-users.xml to add my user/role. Here's the current content of this file: <?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8'?> <tomcat-users> <role rolename="manager"/> <user username="tomcat" password="s3cret" roles="manager"/> </tomcat-users> I thought that maybe it wasn't looking up on this XML, but elsewhere. • Who is Configuration Manager?

  I would like to ask members of the community about the role of Configuration Manager, as you see it. I'm not asking what Configuration Management is, as long it had been asked before. What I need to know is: What tasks do you think Configuration Manager should perform (or performs) in your team? What is primary responsibility of Configuration Manager? What are secondary/auxiliary responsibilities of Configuration Manager? Does Configuration Manager need to be in charge of development processes on the project/company or he should be told what to do? What are relations between Configuration Manager, Build Manager, Release Manager, Deployment Engineer, CI Engineer roles? Aren't they all the same - Configuration Management? Maybe term Configuration Management is redundant and Technical/Team Lead should do all the related work instead? It would be really great if you could share your vision and experience.

• Unable to fix broken packages with sudo apt-get install -f

  Here's my result, of sudo apt-get install -f. i have Ran it twice and got negative result. I believe there is an error at "error in Version string '0:3.6.1-dates for language English Translation data updates for all supported packages for: English" This same statement "error in Version string, caused me three days of attempting to download version 12.04. There is a bug report concerning the quoted text as well. Is there anyway to download the version without the language packs, why would I corrupt version 11.10? Also, when attempting to download Synaptic using sudo apt-get install synaptic, I get the same error message. Again I point out the initial download problems and the same error message receipt.   What is the recommended way to change the first day of the week to Monday (instead of Sunday, as in the screenshot below)? I couldn't find anything related in Clock Preferences, nor in System - Preferences, or System - Administration. This probably has something to do with tweaking locales, so here's (possibly relevant) output from locale: LANG=en_US.utf8 LC_CTYPE="en_US.utf8" LC_NUMERIC="en_US.utf8" LC_TIME="en_US.utf8" ... LC_ALL= NB: I want to keep English as the UI language both in GNOME and on command line. • Why does pasting sometimes not work in gnome-terminal?

  Ctrl + Shift + C and Ctrl + Shift + V are supposed to replace the normal Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V in gnome-terminal. Sometimes they work, but usually they have no effect. What are some potential reasons for this? I'm not sure what other information to give. Edit: It seems that manually selecting Paste from the Edit menu does not work either. Right click > Paste works, but Edit > Paste does not. Copying works, but pasting does not. Also, I have vi-mode enabled (set -o vi in my ~/.bashrc). Could this have something to do with it? Edit: Here is a video demonstrating the problem. I used Screenkey (in "raw" mode, to catch "shift") to show what keys I am pressing.

  I am not yet fully versed with the components installed by default on my machine, so I will apologize in advance if my question is silly. shows that a lot many of (what I assume are) KDE components (libk*, kde*, etc.) are being installed/updated on my machine. That is just the output from sudo apt-fast update && sudo apt-fast dist-upgrade -y from a few minutes ago. Can anyone tell me why? Can I safely remove them? If yes, how? I know that if I add a device to a mount script they will be mounted on boot thus not showing me the notification, which I did for my hard drives, but it doesn't help with all those flash disks I have... I can't add them all that would be silly. I looked at: How can I disable gnome-shell's notification area? ... but they didn't help, since the code was different I also looked at configuration editor, but I think it can only disable auto-mount when inserted, it doesn't disable notification...

• Is it possible to power down my external via the eject button?

  I'm trying to convert from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 12.10 with Gnome 3.6. Using the notification area's eject icon, I notice the partition is unmounted but the drive is still powered and spinning... I understand the latter can be taken care of by means of udisks --detach /dev/sdb I really don't want to have to run a command everytime I eject. Windows does the whole process when ejecting a medium via the systray. Is there a way I could add in the command to the eject button? Is there an appropriate place I could file a feature request? Little things like this are making it hard for me to swap back over to Linux. Thanks for the support!
