• Mac Quick Look Preview in an NSView or NSImage?

  I am looking for a way (public or otherwise) to get an NSView, NSImage, CGImageRef, etc that shows the QuickLook preview for a file. Essentially the equivalent of QLThumbnailImageCreate() but for the preview. The public APIs I can find do not support this. They allow the creation of a thumbnail image or a QLPreviewPanel. The panel does in fact display the quick look preview, but I cannot get access to the preview's appearance to embed it in other views, nor can I display multiple previews at once. For background, I am writing an app where users can embed links to other files that should be displayed inline, kind of like an <img> tag in HTML. For images like JPGs and PDFs it's easy to figure out what to display. I thought that for other formats I would use Quick Look to generate a nice visual representation of the file's contents. This way the set of formats supported by my application would be easily extensible (just download new Quick Look generators).

• How to find the right balance between "quick & dirty" and "nice & general" code?

  This is not a direct programming question, but a little help from the programming community would be appreciated. I am suffering from an overgeneralization disease. I can't stop spending valuable time with making my code most general and abstract. I could also call it the toolkit/library disease. I tend to turn every programming task into a general problem and try to "write a toolkit", that would work for many similar problems. I know it's a good thing in general, if there is enough time, but sometimes I should be writing a quick prototype and just can't seem to write the quick and dirty code that just works for the special case. I often get excited about an idea that makes the code more general and user-configurable and understimate the time it takes to actually implement it that way. Does anyone else have this experience? How can I force myself to find the right balance between "quick hack" and "nice solution"?

• Why does a PDF printed in iWork Pages 09 look crappy in Adobe Reader?

  Hello, I use Snow Leopard at home and work and recently realized that the documents I create in iWork Pages 09 don't look good in Adobe Reader. I go about creating a regular document and 'Print' - Save as PDF in Pages in OS X. The saved PDF file looks great in Preview in OS X but it looks pretty bad in Windows' Adobe Reader and even Adobe Acrobat in OS X. Is there something I could do to make it look better on both platforms? Thank you.

We already have network availability checks in place, but having multiple forms of checks like this helps diagnose where not to look.

• JTable custom header renderer that looks like other headers with nimbus look and feel?

  Any time I create a custom header renderer for a JTable it ends up not looking correct with the nimbus look and feel. The default table headers have a silvery gradient, custom renderers do not look that way. In the past I just avoided creating custom header renderers. Is it possible to copy the default look onto my new custom renderer? Basically I want to add a checkbox and have the area around it look like a normal column header, not just gray. I do know how to add the checkbox though and make it click-able. Thanks

• Why do my Xcode default font starts to look ugly after some time, until I restart?

  I plugged in an external monitor. All resolutions match perfectly. MacBookPro LCD is closed. After about 10 minutes my fonts in Xcode start to look very bad. Only in Xcode. When I restart the mac and don't use an external monitor, fonts look all right again. When I attach the monitor again, fonts look nice. Then I close XCode and reopen it: Fonts suck. All other fonts look great. It seems like Xcode isn't antialiasing them properly after something happens. For my observation it happens when I quit and reopen Xcode while an external monitor is in use. Only way to fix it then is to completely reboot. Is there a fix for this problem?

• Is there a quick way of undoing a folder change in Far Manager?

  I love Far Manager. However, it has a feature to quickly go to the root directory of a drive with Ctrl+\. I do sometimes need and use this feature, but more frequently I use Ctrl+? to quickly insert the file name under the cursor into the command line. As it so happens, the ? key is located dangerously close to \ which is why I sometimes erroneously go the root directory (which then is doubly unfortunate since I originally wanted to work with a file in the directory I was in). Now I could probably just redefine Ctrl+\ to do nothing, although I still sometimes need that (can be replicated with a quick cd\, though). But Windows Explorer, in the wake of the WWW, provided us with a handy directory history and two separate ways of navigating backwards: backwards through the history and backwards through the hierarchy. Is there something quick and easy to get back to the folder I were in? This is less of an issue in C:\Users\Me (still nagging) but more so in deeper hierarchies.

• How can I make the Windows 7 taskbar behave like a cross between the old Quick Launch and new Superbar?

  I really like the taskbar in Windows 7, I think combining buttons to launch apps and the icons that show your running apps is groovy. However, because I like having as much space as possible, I've got small icons enabled and shrunk the bar down to one row. I've also told it not to group the running apps unless there's no space left (to save me having to work harder to find the particular window I want), which also means that they have captions, and are thus quite wide. The (admittedly small) problem this gives me is that I can pin all my favourite apps to the bar, which looks much like the old Quick Launch bar, but when I launch them the running apps because much wider, and the unlaunched apps get lost amongst them. I can manually change the order to fix this, but next time I'll launch a different app and I'll be back to square one. What I'd prefer is for small unlaunched icons to be kept on the left, and wider running apps to move over to the right, which for me would be the best of both worlds. Is there any way I can organise that? I'm aware that one can use the traditional quick launch bar in Windows 7, but that's not what I'm after; I generally prefer the Windows 7 way.

• Can I instruct the browser not to look for a favicon?

  I have a website that doesn't have/need a favicon. Is there a way to instruct the browser not to waste a request looking for /favicon.ico ? I don't mean filtering logs, but something client-side, like this: <link rel="shortcut icon" href="about:blank" /> That appears to work, but I'm not in a position to do comprehensive tests, (and search engines are being unhelpful). Can anyone confirm if this is a valid method, or provide a suitable alternative?

I want the policies to only look at events that happened in last 24 hours. For example for "Windows Event Log System Failure Error" policy if system restarted unexpectedly 5 days ago, i don't want to be alerted daily.   We had a very interesting meeting on Friday 28th last week. We had 10 attendees and two speakers. The first topic presented was Cloud Computing, presented by Allan Rwakatungu @arwakatungu who works with MTN Uganda. He gave a very brilliant outline of how Cloud computing and service oriented applications had begun changing the platform for operating business and the costs it saves because of scalability and elasticity. He went on to demonstrate the steps you would take if you are beginning a new Windows Azure project. He explained the history and evolution of the Windows Azure, SQL Azure and cloud services offered by Amazon and google.com. The attendees had many questions to ask (obviously), but they were all answered very well. We once again thank Allan, for taking time to prepare the presentation and demonstrating for us. We recorded a video on the entire presentation and after doing some editing we will publish it. One wish which was echoed by most members was that Microsoft should open the cloud services and development for Africa. Microsoft currently does not even have servers here in Africa and so far, that does not put African developers in the same platform as other developers in other continents. Now is the time considering the improvements in network speeds and joining of the Seacom network and broadband.   I presented on Parallelism and Multithreading using .NET 4.0, I also gave some details on the language changes in C# 5.0 and the async keyword and the TaskEx class. I explained the Task, Scheduling of parallel tasks and demonstrated problems that may arise from using parallelism inappropriately. I also demonstrated the performance improvements that may be achieved by taking advantage of multi-core processors. You may download the presentation on Parallelism and Multi-threading from here. The resolution of the meeting was that we should meet more than once a month and begin other activities which should be more fun. e.g. Geek Dinner, Geek Beer or CodeCamp.
