• I can't connect to my network, except in safe mode

  My laptop cannot connect to my network all of a sudden except in safe mode. When it boots, it will show the networks available in the tray popup, but if I click connect on any, it says "Unable to connect" and the troubleshooter is useless. Shortly thereafter all the networks disappear. I have tried removing IPv6 support as I have seen that cause problems. No joy. I've also tried removing the wireless network adapter in Device Manager and reinstalling it, also no joy. I've also tried attaching a USB wireless adapter, and it has the same problem. If I boot in safe mode, then it has no problems at all. Three other devices in the house connect fine, so I am pretty sure it is nothing to do with the router. Any ideas what to check next? I am running Win7 Ultimate on a 2GHz Quadcore with 8GB RAM with a Broadcom 802.11n wireless card. EDIT: RE wired connections: What is very weird is that if i plug in a wired connection, then not only does it connect via the wired connection, but the wireLESS also starts working perfectly. And a soon as I unplug the wire, then the wireLESS stops working again! So it seems the wireless is right now working only in safe-mode, or when a wired connection is also plugged in.

• Windows XP can't connect to wireless network

  I have a desktop computer with a wireless card, running Windows XP SP3. For a little while, I had a remote network connection set up for my job, but I didn't need the remote connection so I deleted it. Now, I am unable to connect to the internet at all from that computer through my wireless router. I can connect through my router using my laptop, and I can connect through my neighbor's router using my desktop, but for some reason I can't connect through my own router using my desktop. I see the "Wireless Network Connection 5" icon in my system tray, but it tells me it is not connected. When I click on the icon, I see a list of wireless networks, including my own, which is set up to automatically connect, although it doesn't. When I try to connect to my network on my own (by clicking on it, then clicking "Connect"), it asks me for my network password like it usually does. I see a box come up saying "Waiting for network to be ready..." and it hangs there. On the list of wireless networks, my network says "Acquiring network address" but it doesn't actually connect. How can I fix this? I tried rebooting my computer, repairing my connection, and restarting my router, and I am still having this problem.

  I've OpenWRT router with Backfire 10.03.1-rc3 (arch:brcm 2.6 kernel) I've set up an OpenVPN client connecting my router with workplace lan, and it works nicely, I can connect from router to networks (several) in workplace. • Private staff network within public network

  I'm the sysadmin at a small public library. Since I got here a few years ago, I've been trying to set up the network in a secure and simple way. Security is a little tricky; the staff and patron networks need to be separated, for security reasons. Even if I further isolated the public wireless, I'd still rather not trust the security of our public computers. However, the two networks also need to communicate; even if I set up enough VMs so they didn't share any servers, they need to use the same two printers at the very least. Currently, I'm solving this with some jerry-rigged commodity equipment. The patron network, linked together by switches, has a Windows server connected to it for DNS and DHCP and a DSL modem for a gateway. Also on the patron network is the WAN side of a Linksys router. This router is the "top" of the staff network, and has the same Windows server connected on a different port, providing DNS and DHCP, and another, faster DSL modem (separate connections are very useful, especially as we heavily depend on some cloud-hosted software). tl;dr: We have a public network, and a NATed staff network within it. My question is; is this really the best way to do this? The right equipment would likely make my job easier, but anything with more than four ports and even rudimentary management quickly becomes a heavy hit on our budget. (My original question was about an ungodly frustrating DHCP routing issue, but I thought I'd ask whether my network was broken rather than asking about the DHCP problem and being told my network was broken.)

• Outlook won't re-connect to exchange after network is re-connected

  I have a setup at my desk where I connect my computer to a an RJ45 switch that switches between two networks. One network is the corporate network, which is maintained by my company's IT, and the other is my own private network where I do testing (the two networks have to be separated). The corporate network hosts the exchange server where I get e-mail. When I switch from the private network to the corporate network, I expect Outlook to re-connect to the exchange server. However, I have found that sometimes when I come back, Outlook take an extremely long time to re-connect. Send/Receive will give me back the error 'The server is not available' (0x8004011D). It will sit there for 10 minutes to a few hours before it finally re-connects. The only other option is to reboot my computer, which is a huge pain for me since I run multiple VMs on it. This usually happens when I'm connected to the private network for a significant amount of time, so I'm thinking it's because Outlook has cached the network status. Is there a way to force Outlook to do a 'hard' re-connect to the exchange server? I'm using Windows XP SP 3 with Outlook 2007.

• EMC VNX iSCSI setup - unsure about SP/port assignment

  We have a new VNX5300 waiting to get configured, and I need to plan out the network infrastructure before the EMC tech arrives. It has 4x1gbit iSCSI per SP (8 ports in total), and I'd like to get the most out of the performance until we jump over to 10gig iSCSI. From what I can read from the docs - the recommendation is to use only two ports per SP, with 1 active and 1 passive. Why is this? It seems kind of pointless to have quad-port i/o-modules and then recommend to not use more than two of them? Also - I'm a bit unsure about the zoning. The best practices guide state that you should separate each port on each SP from each other on different logical networks. Does this mean that I have to create 4 logical networks to be able to use all 8 ports? It also gives the following example: Does this mean that A0 and B0 should sit on the same physical switch aswell? Won't this make all traffic go on one switch (if both A1 and B1 are passive)? Edit: Another brainpuzzle I don't get it - each host (as in server) should not have more iSCSI bandwidth available than the storage processor. What on earth does this matter? If serverA have 1gbit and serverB have 100mbit, then the resulting bandwith between them is 100mbit. How can this result in some kind of oversubscription? Edit4: Wait, what. Active and passive ports? The VNX runs in a ALUA configuration with asymmetrical active/active.. there shouldn't be any passive ports, only preferred ones..

• Switch to IPv6 and get rid of NAT? Are you kidding?

  So our ISP has set up IPv6 recently, and I've been studying what the transition should entail before jumping into the fray. I've noticed three very important issues: Our office NAT router (an old Linksys BEFSR41) does not support IPv6. Nor does any newer router, AFAICT. The book I'm reading about IPv6 tells me that it makes NAT "unnecessary" anyway. If we're supposed to just get rid of this router and plug everything directly to the Internet, I start to panic. There's no way in hell I'll put our billing database (With lots of credit card information!) on the internet for everyone to see. Even if I were to propose setting up Windows' firewall on it to allow only 6 addresses to have any access to it at all, I still break out in a cold sweat. I don't trust Windows, Windows' firewall, or the network at large enough to even be remotely comfortable with that. There's a few old hardware devices (ie, printers) that have absolutely no IPv6 capability at all. And likely a laundry list of security issues that date back to around 1998. And likely no way to actually patch them in any way. And no funding for new printers. I hear that IPv6 and IPSEC are supposed to make all this secure somehow, but without physically separated networks that make these devices invisible to the Internet, I really can't see how. I can likewise really see how any defences I create will be overrun in short order. I've been running servers on the Internet for years now and I'm quite familiar with the sort of things necessary to secure those, but putting something Private on the network like our billing database has always been completely out of the question. What should I be replacing NAT with, if we don't have physically separate networks?

• Wireless card overheating?

  Ok, so I've had my laptop for several years (I wanna say 4, but possibly more), it's a Toshiba Satellite. I'm running Linux mint 15, and am having a strange new issue, after several hours of running my wireless stops. It can SEE wireless networks, but refuses to connect to any of them. (On a sidenote, connecting to a router with a cable at this point works fine) The fact that it can SEE the networks make me think the card is in good condition, and it's software related The fact that it works for several hours before booting me makes me think perhaps the transmitter is getting too hot. I don't use my laptop in dusty environments, and keep it on an elevated surface (alternatively, I actively try not to let it sit on soft surfaces where the vents get covered). I spray out the cpu fan about once a year with compressed air about once a year, so I really don't think the insides should be too dirty. Finally, unfortunately, sensors only gives me CPU temps, but they run about 40-50 degrees C, which from my understanding is perfectly normal for an I3. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to determine the root cause of this?

• VPN into multiple LAN Subnets

  I need to figure out a way to allow access to two LAN subnets on a SonicWall NSA 220 through the built-in SonicWall GlobalVPN server. I've Googled and tried everything I can think of, but nothing has worked. The SonicWall NSA management web interface is also very unorganized; I'm probably missing something simple/obvious. There are two networks, called Network A and Network B for simplicity, with two different subnets. A SonicWall NSA 220 is the router/firewall/DHCP Server for Network A, which is plugged into the X2 port. Some other router is the router/firewall/DHCP server for Network B. Both of these networks need to be managed through a VPN connection. I setup the X3 interface on the SonicWall to have a static IP in the Network B subnet and plugged it in. Network A and Network B should not be able to access each other, which appears the be the default configuration. I then configured and enabled VPN. The SonicWall currently has the X1 interface setup with a subnet of 192.168.1.0/24 with a DHCP Server enabled, although it is not plugged in. When I VPN into the SonicWall, I get an IP address supplied by the DHCP Server on the X1 interface and I can access Network A remotely although I do not have access to Network B. How can I allow access to both Network A and Network B to VPN clients although keep devices on Network B from accessing Network A and vice-versa. Is there some way to create a VPN-only subnet (something like 10.100.0.0/24) on the SonicWall that can access Network A and Network B without changing the current network configuration or allowing devices on both netorks "see" each other? How would I go about setting this up? • Slow RDP after server joins domain

  We're having RDP issues with Amazon cloud servers that we recently joined to an Active Directory domain. The setup is: A local office network A virtual private cloud in Amazon An IPSec tunnel between the two networks A number of Windows 2008 R2 servers on both networks An AD domain (call it abc.net), with one domain controller in each network. The domain controllers are both new, fresh installs. Before we had the domain set up we had local accounts for the cloud computers which were used for RDP access. Our idea was to get all of the servers on to the domain so we could use domain logins instead of per-server local logins. Before the cloud servers were in the domain, RDP (from the office network or through a VPN to the cloud) worked great. After we joined the cloud servers to the domain, RDP from the office became very slow - a few minutes to log in, long frequent pauses when the interface is unresponsive, generally just a slow and frustrating experience. This is a problem regardless of whether a domain or local login is used for RDP. Oddly, when outside of the office network and connecting to the cloud directly with the VPN, RDP is still very responsive. Any idea why RDP from office to cloud is suddenly very slow after the cloud servers join the domain? What can I look at in our configuration to address this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Configuring two nearby WLANs: should I use the same ssid?

  I'm configuring a home network for basic internet use (ie don't really need connectivity between workstations on the network). My brick walls mean a single wireless router doesn't provide good coverage throughout the house, so I have purchased two powerline adapters and now have the incoming modem/wireless router at one end of the house plugged into a powerline adapter, and at the other end of the house the other powerline adapter plugged into another wireless router. Currently the two wireless networks have different ssids. (The powerline adapters only do power-Ethernet; they're not wireless access points themselves.) This works well, except when I move between rooms and would ideally like my devices (iPad, phones, laptops) to switch from the weak to the strong signal. Sometimes there's enough signal that they hold on to the weak connects instead of switching to the strong one. Should I name the two networks the same ssid, and if so what is the actual effect? Do the signals get confused, is the bandwidth affected, will this help my devices seamlessly move from one to the other, or is the ssid just a cosmetic thing that actually doesn't have any impact on this situation? Are there any other settings that I should configure to make my setup optimal?

• Wi-Fi won't automatically connect (box in Windows configuration gets unchecked)

  The checkbox that says "Use windows to configure my wireless network settings" keeps getting unchecked (Wirless Network Connection - Change advanced settings - Wireless networks tab.) How do I stop that from happening? (So the wi-fi will reconnect.) When I manually re-check the box, it automatically connects.) I have a D-Link AirPremier DWL-G550 PCI adapter. I installed the newest driver, 5.3.0.46, and that didn't solve the problem. I took the "Atheros Client Utility" (the program window says "D-Link AirPremier Client Utility" when you run it) out of the start menu, rebooted, and that didn't solve the problem. (That utility puts a signal bar similiar to the one MS Windows puts there, and it's gone now.) The D-Link client utility has an option to automatically connect to preferred networks, but it is greyed out. It is also greyed out if I install the driver and utility right off the D-Link installation CD, so the problem isn't that the utility and driver are incompatible versions. I want to use Windows to handle the connection anyway, as the D-Link utility is garbage. Windows XP SP3 w/all current updates.

• Randomly unusable wireless connection. Oddest issue ever...

  I have two desktop computers a laptop and a smartphone. All of them connect perfectly to my router (WRT54GL with Tomato firmware), but randomly (once a week maybe) something odd happens: For over an hour or so one of the desktop computers (Windows 7 Pro x64) will just refuse to connect properly to the router. Only that computer and only to that network. I can connect all the other machines to the router perfectly and I can connect properly to other networks with that machine. What I mean by "not being able to connect properly" I mean that the OS will just tell me "not able to connect to.." or that it will connect but then say that it has no Internet access or it connects but will then take minutes to load any website, even the router web interface. I've tried to change from WPA2 to WEP and back to WPA2, I've tried different network adapters (one internal PCI card and one USB external card), removing networks from Windows and adding again... without making any difference. It works for some days but at the end, it ends happening at some time. I just have no clue on what the hell could be going on here. I first thought it was the network adapter, then the router, then Windows... Thanks in advance

• A tool or framework extension or code snippet for logging the internal state of objects?

  When spiking on how something works or when my unit test behave in an unpredictable manner I usually have to drop into debug mode. 99% of my time in debug mode is spent checking the values of fields on objects to verify its state. I already have log4net set up, it would seem that if I could easily add a line of code to log out the state of objects I could remove most of my need to start up the bulky debugger. The problem is of course that to expose object state implicitly you need to manually override each object's ToString() method. What I would like to be able to do is the ability to do logger.LogState(someObject) and have logged out the object state including at least a formatted list of all the private variables, references (to some arbitrary depth), and collections. Does anyone know a tool/framework/code snippet that can be used to generate a string of the internal state of any object? I could of course write one myself but its a non-trivial problem and I'd prefer something someone has put some thought into.

• Application.Idle causes high CPU usage

  Hello, I use the Application.Idle event to handle toolbar status (enable/disable) etc. quite extensively. As I'm beta testing Norton AntiVirus 2011, it brought to my attention that my app that I'm developing triggered a high CPU usage warning on at least one CPU. Sure enough, I opened the task manager and watched one of the four CPU's (quad core system) go to near 100%. I thought Application.Idle was the way to handle things when the application wasn't performing CPU tasks. Why is Application.Idle spiking the CPU? Here is how I attach to the event: AddHandler Application.Idle, AddressOf OnAppIdle Been using Application.Idle for a long time, never knew it would have this issue. Using VS 2010 .NET 4 Thank you.

• OpenVPN Error : TLS Error: local/remote TLS keys are out of sync: [AF_INET]

  Fist off thanks for reading this, I appreciate any and all suggestions. I am having some serious problems reconnecting to my OpenVPN client using Riseup.net's VPN. I have spent a few days banging my head against the wall in attempts to set this up on my iOS devices....but that is a whole other issue. I was however able to set it up on my Mac OS X specifically on my Windows Vista 32 bit BootCamp VM with relatively little trouble. To originally connect I only had to modify the recommended Config file very slightly (Config file included at the end of this post): - I had to enter the code directly into my config file - And change "dev tap" to "dev tun" So I was connected. (Note - I did test to ensure the VPN was actually working after I originally connected, it was. Also verified the .pem file (inserted as the coding in my config file) for authenticity). I left the VPN running. My computer went to sleep. Today I went to use the internet expecting (possibly incorrectly - I am now unsure if I was wrong to leave it running) to still be connected to the VPN. However I saw immediately I was not. I went to reconnect. And was (am) unable to. I apologize in advance for my ignorance. I do tech support for a living, but not this kind of tech support unfortunately. Other notes and troubleshooting done - - Windows Firewall is disabled completely, as well as other Anti-virus programs - Tor is disabled completely - No Proxies running - Time is correct in all locations - Router Firmware is up to date - Able to connect to the internet and as far as I can tell all necessary ports are open. - No settings have been altered since I was able to connect successfully. - Ethernet as well as wifi connections attempted, resulted in same error. Also tried adding the following lines to my config file (without success or change in error): persist-key persist-tun proto tcp (after reading that this error generally occurs on UDP connections, and is extremely rare on TCP) resolv-retry infinite (thinking the connection may have timed out since the issues occurred after leaving VPN connected during about 10 hrs of computer in sleep mode) All attempts resulted in exact same error code included at the top of this post. The original suggestions I found online stated - (regarding the TLS Error) - This error should resolve itself within 60 seconds, or if not quit wait 120 seconds and try again. (Which isnt the case here...) (regarding the Out of Sync" error) - If you continue to get "out of sync" errors and the link does not come up, then it means that something is probably wrong with your config file. You must use either ping and ping-restart on both sides of the connection, or keepalive on the server side of a client/server connection, in order to gracefully recover from "local/remote TLS keys are out of sync" errors. I wouldn't be surprised if my config file is lacking, or not correct. However I can confirm I followed the instructions to a tee. And was able to connect originally (and have not modified my settings or config file since I was able to connect to when the error began occurring). I have a very simple config file: client dev tun tun-mtu 1500 remote vpn.riseup.net auth-user-pass ca RiseupCA.pem redirect-gateway verb 4 <ca> -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----- [OMITTED] -----END CERTIFICATE----- </ca> I would really appreciate any help or suggestions. I am at a total loss here, I know I'm asking a lot here. Though I am a new user on this site I help others on many forums including Microsoft's support community and especially Apple's support communities, so I will definitely pass on anything I learn here to help others. • Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community

  There we go! I finally managed to push myself forward and pick up an old, actually too old, idea since I ever arrived here in Mauritius more than six years ago. I'm talking about a community for all kind of ICT connected people. In the past (back in Germany), I used to be involved in various community activities. For example, I was part of the Microsoft Community Leader/Influencer Program (CLIP) in Germany due to an FAQ on Visual FoxPro, actually Active FoxPro Pages (AFP) to be more precise. Then in 2003/2004 I addressed the responsible person of the dFPUG user group in Speyer in order to assist him in organising monthly user group meetings. Well, he handed over management completely, and attended our meetings regularly. Why did it take you so long? Well, I don't want to bother you with the details but short version is that I was too busy on either job (building up new companies) or private life (got married and we have two lovely children, eh 'monsters') or even both. But now is the time where I was starting to look for new fields given the fact that I gained some spare time. My businesses are up and running, the kids are in school, and I am finally in a position where I can commit myself again to community activities. And I love to do that! Why a new user group? Good question... And 'easy' to answer. Since back in 2007 I did my usual research, eh Google searches, to see whether there existing user groups in Mauritius and in which field of interest. And yes, there are! If I recall this correctly, then there are communities for PHP, Drupal, Python (just recently), Oracle, and Linux (which used to be even two). But... either they do not exist anymore, they are dormant, or there is only a low heart-beat, frankly speaking. And yes, I went to meetings of the Linux User Group Meta (Mauritius) back in 2010/2011 and just recently. I really like the setup and the way the LUGM is organised. It's just that I have a slightly different point of view on how a user group or community should organise itself and how to approach future members. Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing others doing a very good job, I'm only saying that I'd like to do it differently. The last meeting of the LUGM was awesome; read my feedback about it. Ok, so what's up with 'Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community' or short: MSCC? As I've already written in my article on 'Communities - The importance of exchange and discussion' I think it is essential in a world of IT to stay 'connected' with a good number of other people in the same field. There is so much dynamic and every day's news that it is almost impossible to keep on track with all of them. The MSCC is going to provide a common platform to exchange experience and share knowledge between each other. You might be a newbie and want to know what to expect working as a software developer, or as a database administrator, or maybe as an IT systems administrator, or you're an experienced geek that loves to share your ideas or solutions that you implemented to solve a specific problem, or you're the business (or HR) guy that is looking for 'fresh' blood to enforce your existing team. A front-end developer for iOS applications should have the chance to connect with a Python back-end coder and eventually with a DBA for MySQL or PostgreSQL and exchange their experience. Furthermore, I'm a huge fan of cross-platform development, and it is very pleasant to have pure Web developers - with all that HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and JS libraries stuff - and passionate C# or Java coders at the same table. This diversity of knowledge can assist and boost your personal situation. And last but not least, there are projects and open positions 'flying' around... People might like to hear others opinion about an employer or get new impulses on how to tackle down an issue at their workspace, etc. This is about community. And that's how I see the MSCC in general - free of any limitations be it by programming language or technology. Having the chance to exchange experience and to discuss certain aspects of technology saves you time and money, and it's a pleasure to enjoy. Compared to dusty books and remote online resources. • Is CUDA, cuBLAS or cuBLAS-XT the right place to start with for machine learning?

  I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this question - but it surely is no question for stackoverflow. I work on my bachelor thesis and therefore I am implementing a so called Echo-State Network which basically is an artificial neural network that has a large reservoir of randomly initialized neurons and just a few input and output neurons .. but I think we can skip that. The thing is, there is a Python library called Theano which I am using for this implementation. It encapsulates the CUDA API and offers a quiet "comfortable" way to access the power of a NVIDIA graphics card. Since CUDA 6.0 there is a sub-library called cuBLAS (Basic Linear Algebra Subroutines) for LinAlg operations and also a cuBLAS-XT an extention which allows to run calculations on multiple graphics cards. My question at this point is if it would make sense to start using cuBLAS and/or cuBLAS-XT right now since the API is quite complex or rather wait for libraries that will build up on those library (such as Theano does on basic CUDA)? If you think this is the wrong place for this question please tell me which one is, thank you.

  I'm one of the believers that think that we will hit the technological singularity sooner or later. Then the question is if any profession will be unaffected by changes that will come. In the end it will be we programmers that will implement the first self-aware AI. How will technological singularity affect us programmer? What is your professional opinion regarding technological singularity? EDIT: By self-aware I refer to an entity that questions and seek answers, able to analyze and solve problem. Artificial neural network is branch in mathematics/statistics with many widely used algorithms. The algorithms are applied where recognition of data is needed. For example hidden Markov model is used for voice recognition. Another well-known area is business intelligence and data mining. Today algorithms are self-learning. That is a bit of AI what many never think of. Let an ultraintelligent machine be defined as a machine that can far surpass all the intellectual activities of any man however clever. Since the design of machines is one of these intellectual activities, an ultraintelligent machine could design even better machines; there would then unquestionably be an ‘intelligence explosion,’ and the intelligence of man would be left far behind. • Issue in understanding how to compare performance of classifier using ROC

  I am trying to demystify pattern recognition techniques and understood few of them. I am trying to design a classifier M. A gesture is classified based on the hamming distance between the sample time series y and the training time series x. The result of the classifier are probabilistic values. There are 3 classes/categories with labels A,B,C which classifies hand gestures where there are 100 samples for each class which are to be classified (single feature and data length=100). The data are different time series (x coordinate vs time). The training set is used to assign probabilities indicating which gesture has occured how many times. So,out of 10 training samples if gesture A appeared 6 times then probability that a gesture falls under category A is P(A)=0.6 similarly P(B)=0.3 and P(C)=0.1 Now, I am trying to compare the performance of this classifier with Bayes classifier, K-NN, Principal component analysis (PCA) and Neural Network. On what basis,parameter and method should I do it if I consider ROC or cross validate since the features for my classifier are the probabilistic values for the ROC plot hence what shall be the features for k-nn,bayes classification and PCA? Is there a code for it which will be useful. What should be the value of k is there are 3 classes of gestures? Please help. I am in a fix.

• Clean Code Development & Flexible work environment - MSCC 26.10.2013

  Finally, some spare time to summarize my impressions and experiences of the recent meetup of Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community. I already posted my comment on the event and on our social media networks: Professional - It's getting better with our meetups and I really appreciated that 'seniors' and 'juniors' were present today. Despite running a little bit out of time it was really great to see more students coming to the gathering. This time we changed location for our Saturday meetup and it worked out very well. A big thank you to Ebene Accelerator, namely Mrs Poonum, for the ability to use their meeting rooms for our community get-together. Already some weeks ago I had a very pleasant conversation with her about the MSCC aims, 'mission' and how we organise things. Additionally, I think that an environment like the Ebene Accelerator is a good choice as it acts as an incubator for young developers and start-ups. Reactions from other craftsmen Before I put my thoughts about our recent meeting down, I'd like to mention and cross-link to some of the other craftsmen that were present: "MSCC meet up is a massive knowledge gaining strategies for students, future entrepreneurs, or for geeks all around. More first time attendees We great pleasure I noticed that we have once again more first time visitors. A quick overlook showed that we had a majority of UoM students in first, second or last year. Some of them are already participating in the UoM Computer Club or are nominated as members of the Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) programme. Personally, I really appreciate the fact that the MSCC is able to gather such a broad audience. And as I wrote initially, the MSCC is technology-agnostic; we want IT people from any segment of this business. Of course, students which are about to delve into the 'real world' of working are highly welcome, and I hope that they might get one or other glimpse of experience or advice from employees. Sticking to the schedule? No, not really... And honestly, it was a good choice to go a little bit of the beaten tracks. I mean, yes we have a 'rough' agenda of topics that we would like to talk about or having a presentation about. But we keep it 'agile'. Due to the high number of new faces, we initiated another quick round of introductions and I gave a really brief overview of the MSCC. Next, we started to reflect on the Clean Code Developer (CCD) - Red Grade which we introduced on the last meetup. Nirvan was the lucky one and he did a good job on summarizing the various abbreviations of the first level of being a CCD. Actually, more interesting, we exchanged experience about the principles and practices of Red Grade, and it was very informative to get to know that Yann actually 'interviewed' a couple of friends, other students, local guys working in IT companies as well as some IT friends from India in order to counter-check on what he learned first-hand about Clean Code. Currently, he is reading the book of Robert C. Martin on that topic and I'm looking forward to his review soon. More output generates more input What seems to be like a personal mantra is working out pretty well for me since the beginning of this year. Being more active on social media networks, writing more article on my blog, starting the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community, and contributing more to other online communities has helped me to receive more project requests, job offers and possibilities to expand my business at IOS Indian Ocean Software Ltd. Actually, it is not a coincidence that one of the questions new craftsmen should answer during registration asks about having a personal blog. Whether you are just curious about IT, right in the middle of your Computer Studies, or already working in software development or system administration since a while you should consider to advertise and market yourself online. Easiest way to resolve this are to have online profiles on professional social media networks like LinkedIn, Xing, Twitter, and Google+ (no Facebook should be considered for private only), and considering to have a personal blog. Why? -- Be yourself, be proud of your work, and let other people know that you're passionate about your profession. Trust me, this is going to open up opportunities you might not have dreamt about... Exchanging ideas about having a professional online presence - MSCC meetup on the 26th October 2013 Furthermore, consider to put your Curriculum Vitae online, too. There are quite a number of service providers like 1ClickCV, Stack Overflow Careers 2.0, etc. which give you the ability to have an up to date CV online. At least put it on your site, next to your personal blog. Similar to what you would be able to see on my site here. Cyber Island Mauritius - are we there? A couple of weeks ago I got a 'cold' message on LinkedIn from someone living in the U.S. asking about the circumstances and conditions of the IT world of Mauritius. He has a great business idea, venture capital and is currently looking for a team of software developers (mainly mobile - iOS) for a new startup here in Mauritius. Since then we exchanged quite some details through private messages and Skype conversations, and I suggested that it might be a good chance to join our meetup through a conference call and see for yourself about potential candidates. During approximately 30 to 40 minutes the brief idea of the new startup was presented - very promising state-of-the-art technology aspects and integration of various public APIs -, and we had a good Q&A session about it. Also thanks to the excellent bandwidth provided by the Ebene Accelerator the video conference between three parties went absolutely well. Clean Code Developer - Orange Grade Hahaha - nice one... Being at the Orange Tower at Ebene and then talking about an Orange Grade as CCD. Well, once again I provided an overview of the principles and practices in that rank of Clean Code, and similar to our last meetup we discussed on the various aspect of each principle, whether someone already got in touch with it during studies or work, and how it could affect their future view on their source code. Following are the principles and practices of Clean Code Developer - Orange Grade: CCD Orange Grade - Principles Single Level of Abstraction (SLA) Single Responsibility Principle (SRP) Separation of Concerns (SoC) Source Code conventions CCD Orange Grade - Practices Issue Tracking Automated Integration Tests Reading, Reading, Reading Reviews Especially the part on reading technical books got some extra attention. We quickly gathered our views on that and came up with a result that ranges between Zero (0) and up to Fifteen (15) book titles per year. Personally, I'm keeping my progress between Six (6) and Eight (8) titles per year, but at least One (1) per quarter of a year. Which is also connected to the fact that I'm participating in the O'Reilly Reader Review Program and have a another benefit to get access to free books only by writing and publishing a review afterwards. We also had a good exchange on the extended topic of 'Reviews' - which to my opinion is abnormal difficult here in Mauritius for various reasons. As far as I can tell from my experience working with Mauritian software developers, either as colleagues, employees or during consulting services there are unfortunately two dominant pattern on that topic: Keeping quiet Running away Honestly, I have no evidence about why these are the two 'solutions' on reviews but that's the situation that I had to face over the last couple of years. Sitting together and talking about problematic issues, tackling down root causes of de-motivational activities and working on general improvements doesn't seem to have a ground within the IT world of Mauritius. Are you a typist or a creative software craftsman? - MSCC meetup on the 26th October 2013 One very good example that we talked about was the fact of 'job hoppers' as you can easily observe it on someone's CV - those people change job every single year; for no obvious reason! Frankly speaking, I wouldn't even consider an IT person like to for an interview. As a company you're investing money and effort into the abilities of your employees. Hiring someone that won't stay for a longer period is out of question. And sorry to say, these kind of IT guys smell fishy about their capabilities and more likely to cause problems than actually produce productive results. One of the reasons why there is a probation period on an employment contract is to give you the liberty to leave as early as possible in case that you don't like your new position. Don't fool yourself or waste other people's time and money by hanging around a full year only to snatch off the bonus payment... Future outlook: Developer's Conference Even though it is not official yet I already mentioned it several times during our weekly Code & Coffee sessions. The MSCC is looking forward to be able to organise or to contribute to an upcoming IT event. Currently, the rough schedule is set for April 2014 but this mainly depends on availability of location(s), a decent time frame for preparations, and the underlying procedures with public bodies to have it approved and so on. As soon as the information about date and location has been fixed there will be a 'Call for Papers' period in order to attract local IT enthusiasts to apply for a session slot and talk about their field of work and their passion in IT. More to come for sure... My resume of the day It was a great gathering and I am very pleased about the fact that we had another 15 craftsmen (plus 2 businessmen on conference call plus 2 young apprentices) in the same room, talking about IT related topics and sharing their experience as employees and students. Personally, I really appreciated the feedback from the students about their current view on their future career, and I really hope that some of them are going to pursue their dreams. Start promoting yourself and it will happen... Looking forward to your blogs! And last but not least our numbers on Meetup and Facebook have been increased as a direct consequence of this meetup. • Open Source Software Development Center at University of Belgrade

  A new Open Source Software Development Center is open at University of Belgrade, Serbia. It centers around using Java & NetBeans as open source projects to learn from and contribute to. Assistant Professor Zoran Sevarac says that not only does the center allow him to teach software development using open source projects, but also "we are improving our University courses based on the experience we get from working on open source code."  Some of the projects underway are a NetBeans UML plugin; Neuroph (a Java neural network framework, with a NetBeans Platform-based UI); a NetBeans DOAP Plugin; WorkieTalkie (NetBeans chat plugin); and 2D and 3D visualization plugins for NetBeans. University of Belgrade also has an official university course about open source development, where students learn to use development tools, work in teams, participate in open source projects and learn from real world software development projects. Students, teachers, and researchers at the University of Belgrade, and any member of the open source community are welcome to come to learn software development from successful open source projects.
