• MS Vista taking too long to identify Wi-Fi connection [closed]

  I with few of my flat-mates share internet connection by using ASL cable into one laptop and then making Adhoc private network so that we all can enjoy internet connectivity. It all worked wonderful few initial days, but now my MS vista is taking much time to identify that adhoc network and it though I am connected to my friend, it takes 5-10 minutes untill I use internet.

• Setting up a SQL server outside the domain

  Hi, im very new to this. I've set up an account "SQLBOX" thats on the a network, but not connected to the domain. I have installed an instance of SQL Server 2008 and am trying to connect to it from another machine on the network but am getting "Cannot connect to "SQLBOX"". From the "SQLBOX" i can connect to sqlservers on the domain, but not vice-versa. Any help would be grately appreciated. Sorry if the description isn't great. Thanks

• What is the proper position for the loopback address in a DNS server selection list?

  Best practices indicate that one should list 127.0.0.1 in the DNS list for the network adapter configuration for a Domain Controller, but not as the first one. With that said, what is the best place to put it in a list with more than two DNS servers listed? Second, last, or it doesn't matter? Also helpful would be an explanation as to why. • Windows 2008 R2 large file copy causes Hyper-V Manager to stop responding

  I'm using the EXPORT feature in Hyper-V to move a large Virtual Machine (VM) over a 1GB network from a Windows 2008 to a Windows 2008 R2 box (200GB) and its so intense that I get the following icon on my destination Hyper-V manager: Is this expected? Is there another way to get large file across the network and minimize this intense I/O effect? Anyones else ever seen that Do Not Enter sign? The other VMs are functional but slow, but I'm guessing that is expected.

• ISS7 authentication doesn't work on servername

  Not sure if I put correct title but here is my problem: Local (home network) IIS 7, default web site bind to any IP on port 81, Anonymous Auth disabled, Windows Auth enabled If I go to 192.168.1.101:81/ I get asked for username and password. If I go to server:81/ nothing is being asked regardless whether connecting from local or another machine on the network. Why is that? Am I doing something wrong?

  I have a bunch of programming projects on my P:\ drive (on Windows 7) I'm now doing some programming within Virtual PC Windows XP Mode and I'd like to "call" that drive, within the Win XP guest, the P: drive. I've mapped drive letter P: to "network" drive on the Host but that goes across the network so it's very slow. I tried using the SUBST command but it wouldn't take the \tsclients\p as a parameter. Basically, the command line interpreter (is that DOS on Win 7 ??) doesn't recognize that directory (\tsclients\p)

• finger for Windows

  Ok probably a bit of an odd question, but is there a way to enable "finger" like functionality on a Windows network? we'd basically like the ability to find out where a user is logged in on a network and possibly which users are logged onto a workstation if possible. We're currently on AD2003 functional level, with the intent of going to AD2008 very soon, so compatibility in that arena is preferable.

• Is it better to use N WiFi or Cat5e ethernet for large file transfers?

  I have a network containing 802.11 N WiFi Devices and gigabit ethernet devices, however using only Cat5e wiring. I know that if I used Cat6, the ethernet would be much faster however if I need to transfer a large file between a device thats connected normally connected via ethernet and a device thats normally connected via WiFi, would it be advantageous to bother plugging the WiFi device in to the network? or should I switch the ethernet device to WiFi? or does it really matter?

  Hey, I'm having trouble with an onboard nvidia gigabit network, under times of heavy load on the network, I'm seeing this error logged: "too many iterations (6) in nv_nic_irq" I'm running Hadoop DFS over these NICs and I see checksum errors build up until the whole thing just fails. I'm running the 2.6.26-2-amd64 kernel, and my initial research seems to imply its a problem with the forcedeth driver. Has anyone run into this problem before? Thanks in advance if anyone can help! • Is there any way to set up a malware-blocking transparent proxy on an Airport Extreme?

  I'd like to add some kind of easily-administered transparent HTTP proxy to my home network. Ideally, it would allow me to, for example, redirect web requests to blacklisted servers into nothing, block certain kinds of content, et al. My home network at the moment consists of a mac mini media server that could -- if the load wasn't huge -- fill this role as well, an Airport Extreme, and a mac laptop that is my main machine.   I have a sagem livebox 2 (Fiber optic model), and have placed my computer in a DMZ. People from outside of my network can access my comp fine via its external dyndns.org address, yet when I try to call the public dyndns.org address from inside my network, I get redirected to the internal admin site on the router. The computer must be left running and logged on at all times. My thought is to run the computer under a "shared account" which would allow each user to logon/unlock the screen using their own network password (i.e., the password for their personal account). • Is there anything wrong with disabling Teredo?

  Today while doing some routine maintenance I discovered that my internet-connected network adapter was using a 6to4 tunnel to connect to my ISP. Some self-eduction on Teredo seemed to indicate quite a few potential security vulnerabilities with using the protocol. I have disabled my network adapter from using Teredo and it doesn't seem to impact my gateway in any way. Is there anything I am missing that should encourage me to turn it back on?

• I have an internal machine with apache that I can access by IP Address but not computer name

  I have ubuntu machine running lampp. While on the machine I can type localhost or the computers name to access htdocs. From another machine I can only access the machine via its IP Address. This just started happening recently when someone rearranged the network cables and removed a hub sitting between the machine and the network, which makes me think it wasn't all the stable to begin with anyways. Any suggestions on where I should start looking?

On Windows 7, short of turning the firewall off completely, I am having trouble configuring the firewall to allow other computers on the same private LAN to connect to the server. Simply adding the program to the allowed programs list doesn't seem to work. The network connection is set to be a "Home" network (but I am not using Home Networking).   I am using mobile dial up on ubuntu. However, SOMETIMES even though I am connected to the ISP, I do not have any entries in /etc/resolv.conf. I often restart network-manager or networking hoping it will change but normally it doesn't do any good. and by connected I mean I can see that the network notification icon has switched to a few bars indicating connectivity). Anyone know a good solution around this?

  We are using the basic Verizon router but it sucks so we're looking for a new one that allows us to limit users and our hadoop cluster to certain limits. Our problem is one person can start downloading something and kill the network and every hour we download logs into our cluster but it floods the network unless we rate limit it. Ideally we want to be able to say: total: 35 mbps Hadoop Cluster (15 mbps) Phones (1 mbps) Office(25 people) (19mbps but no one machine can have more than 5mbps)

• Automount of AFP shares on Lion clients from OS X Snow Leopard server - not working right

  Recently upgraded Snow Leopard clients to Lion. AFP shares are set up as login items. The network shares on some of the machines now take a long time to come up (10 minutes). Several machines that were upgraded are acting normally, and three machines with clean installs of Lion (not upgraded) are also working normally.   I have a Canon PIXMA MX700 connected by ethernet. When I first bought it I was using OS X 10.4, and scanner-initiated scanning worked fine. After upgrading to 10.6, neither scanner-initiated or scanning from MP Navigator EX works with the firewall enabled. The firewall lists exceptions for three applications: Canon IJ Network Scan Utility.app Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector.app MP Navigator EX 1.0.app I get no further blocked warnings, and /var/log/appfirewall.log lists nothing for today (my latest attempt to use it).

• Wireless Connection unstable when multiple devices connected

  My wireless network works perfectly when only 1 device is connected. Super fast, full strength. But as soon as multiple devices are connected to the wireless network the connections become unstable (constantly losing connection). It's quite annoying. I have a Sitecom Wireless 300N XR Gigabit Router WL-306, which should be a decent router so I'm guessing there must be something wrong with my configuration. Does any of you know what might cause this? Thanks
