• Seeking for faster $.(':data(key)')

  I'm writing an extension to jQuery that adds data to DOM elements using el.data('lalala', my_data); and then uses that data to upload elements dynamically. Each time I get new data from the server I need to update all elements having el.data('lalala') != null; To get all needed elements I use an extension by James Padolsey: $(':data(lalala)').each(...); Everything was great until I came to the situation where I need to run that code 50 times - it is very slow! It takes about 8 seconds to execute on my page with 3640 DOM elements var x, t = (new Date).getTime(); for (n=0; n < 50; n++) { jQuery(':data(lalala)').each(function() { x++; }); }; console.log(((new Date).getTime()-t)/1000); Since I don't need RegExp as parameter of :data selector I've tried to replace this by var x, t = (new Date).getTime(); for (n=0; n < 50; n++) { jQuery('*').each(function() { if ($(this).data('lalala')) x++; }); }; console.log(((new Date).getTime()-t)/1000); This code is faster (5 sec), but I want get more. Q Are there any faster way to get all elements with this data key? In fact, I can keep an array with all elements I need, since I execute .data('key') in my module. Checking 100 elements having the desired .data('lalala') is better then checking 3640 :) So the solution would be like for (i in elements) { el = elements[i]; .... But sometimes elements are removed from the page (using jQuery .remove()). Both solutions described above [$(':data(lalala)') solution and if ($(this).data('lalala'))] will skip removed items (as I need), while the solution with array will still point to removed element (in fact, the element would not be really deleted - it will only be deleted from the DOM tree - because my array will still have a reference). I found that .remove() also removes data from the node, so my solution will change into var toRemove = []; for (vari in elements) { var el = elements[i]; if ($(el).data('lalala')) .... else toRemove.push(i); }; for (var ii in toRemove) elements.splice(toRemove[ii], 1); // remove element from array This solution is 100 times faster! Q Will the garbage collector release memory taken by DOM elements when deleted from that array? Remember, elements have been referenced by DOM tree, we made a new reference in our array, then removed with .remove() and then removed from the array. Is there a better way to do this?

• Poorly performing regex

  I've a really poorly performing piece of regex, currently it makes Firefox, Chrome and IE hang for a period of time. Here's the reg-ex: ^([a-zA-Z0-9]+[/]?)+[a-zA-Z0-9]+$ It's kind of a url matcher, but should only match the requested path (not starting with or ending with a slash). Valid examples: Segment Segment/Segment segment/segment/Segment (etc) Invalid examples: /Segment Segment/ Segment/Segment/ Using the regex above over all three browsers and using two or more slashes causes the browsers to hang. It's obviously a poorly formed reg-ex, but can anyone help build a better one? Thanks,

• iPhone SDK mySQL

  Hello everybody, I'm starting on a new iPhone project, and this application mostly relies on mySQL. I have a mysql database running on my computer, and I need this application to send queries to the server to gain information. One example is creating and logging into an account. I have successfully done this on my windows vb.net application, but I know that objective c will be harder. This is basically getting text from the sql database and displaying it on the iPhone application. If someone could simply help me on that, I'll easily get started. • Java 1.4 to Java 6 migration

  Hi, I have some enterprise apps running on Java 1.4. They mostly invoke Stored Proces on DB, Parse XML files (Not too large files, at the most few megs), read/write from/to disk. We have a requirement where now we have to migrate these apps to Java 6(No code changes to be done at all). My questions: If I dont recompile my apps under Java 6 and just run them with it, will it work fine (I know they 'should'). But if somebody thinks other way round, could you kindly share your thoughts please? More important question is - Will it have any perfomance impact?. As in, App compiled on 1.4 and running on 1.6 vs App compiled and running on 1.6. Is 1.6 gonna do any bytecode optimization for the same old peace of code compared to 1.4? Many Thanks js

PHP's GET method seems to translate a plus sign into a blank space. I have searched this bug and found out that it has already been filed here. I have tried different methods listed on that page and others with no success. The closest I got is by using this: $fixedstring = str_replace(" ", "+", $string); and then using $fixedstring in the encryption methods, the problem is, upon decryption, all blank spaces are converted to plus signs. Any ideas?

• Best practice for defining CSS rules via JavaScript

  I'm loading a stylesheet that is only required when javascript is enabled. More to the point, it mustn't be present if JavaScript is disabled. I'm doing this as soon as possible (in the head) before any javascript libraries are loaded. (I'm loading all scripts as late as possible). The code for loading this stylesheet externally is simple, and looks like this: var el = document.createElement('link'); el.setAttribute('href','/css/noscript.css'); el.setAttribute('rel','stylesheet'); el.setAttribute('type','text/css'); document.documentElement.firstChild.appendChild(el); It's working fine, but all my CSS file contains at the moment is this: .noscript { display: none; } This doesn't really warrant loading a file, so I'm thinking of just defining the rule dynamically in JavaScript. What's best practice for this?. A quick scan of various techniques shows that it requires a fair bit of cross-browser hacking. P.S. pleeease don't post jQuery examples. This must be done with no libraries.

• Python: speed up removal of every n-th element from list.

  I'm trying to solve this programming riddle and althought the solution (see code below) works correct, it is too slow for succesful submission. Any pointers as how to make this run faster? (removal of every n-th element from a list)? Or suggestions for a better algorithm to calculate the same; seems I can't think of anything else then brute-force for now... Basically the task at hand is: GIVEN: L = [2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,........] 1. Take the first remaining item in list L (in the general case 'n'). Move it to the 'lucky number list'. Then drop every 'n-th' item from the list. 2. • Java and tomcat vs ASP.NET and IIS

  Until recently I'd considered myself to be a pretty good web programmer (coming up for 10yrs commercial experience on a variety of e-commerce, static and enterprise applications). I'm self taught and have always used the Microsoft product stack (ASP, ASP.NET)... My applications are always functional, relatively bug free, but have never been lightening quick. As a frequent web user I always found this to be the norm... how fast are the websites from the big tech players (eBay, Facebook, Microsoft, IBM, Dell, Telerik etc etc) - in truth none are particularly fast. I always attributed this to "the way things are with web apps"... ...then I cam across a product called Jira from atlasian and this has stopped me in my tracks... This application is fast, and I mean blindingly fast.. too fast to time the switches between pages, fully live content, lots of images and data and cross references etc etc... I run this on an intranet, with a large application DB, and this is running on a very normal server (single processor, SATA HDD, 8GB RAM). Am I missing something?? Are my programming techniques that bad?? I am wondering if this speed gain is down to it being written in Java and running on Tomcat. Does anyone have any benchmarks to compare JSP / ASP or Tomcat / IIS??? Thanks, Mark NOTE: this isn't a blatant plug for Jira.   I am just staring to play around with Objective C (writing toy iPhone apps) and I am curious about the underlying mechanism used to dispatch messages. I have a good understanding of how virtual functions in C++ are generally implemented and what the costs are relative to a static or non-virtual method call, but I don't have any background with Obj-C to know how messages are sent. Browsing around I found this loose benchmark and it mentions IMP cached messages being faster than virtual function calls, which are in turn faster than a standard message send. I am not trying to optimize anything, just get deeper understanding of how exactly the messages get dispatched. How are Obj-C messages dispatched? How do Instance Method Pointers get cached and can you (in general) tell by reading the code if a message will get cached? Are class methods essentially the same as a C function (or static class method in C++), or is there something more to them? I know some of these questions may be 'implementation dependent' but there is only one implementation that really counts.

  The Replace Temp with Query refactoring method is recommended quite widely now but seems to be very inefficient for very little gain. The method from the Martin Fowler's site gives the following example: Extract the expression into a method. Replace all references to the temp with the expression. The new method can then be used in other methods. double basePrice = _quantity * _itemPrice; if (basePrice > 1000) return basePrice * 0.95; else return basePrice * 0.98; becomes if (basePrice() > 1000) return basePrice() * 0.95; else return basePrice() * 0.98; double basePrice() { return _quantity * _itemPrice; } Why is this a good idea? surely it means the calculation is needlessly repeated and you have the overhead of calling a function. I know CPU cycles are cheap but throwing them away like this seems careless? Am I missing something?

I would like to return a line for the Srn entered (The top manager) with a count of completed surveys for the direct reports under that manager. Under that I would like each manager under the original manager with a count of completed surveys for each of their direct reports and so on. • Efficiency of Java "Double Brace Initialization"?

  In Hidden Features of Java the top answer mentions Double Brace Initialization, with a very enticing syntax: Set<String> flavors = new HashSet<String>() {{ add("vanilla"); add("strawberry"); add("chocolate"); add("butter pecan"); }}; This idiom creates an anonymous inner class with just an instance initializer in it, which "can use any [...] methods in the containing scope". Main question: Is this as inefficient as it sounds? Should its use be limited to one-off initializations? (And of course showing off!) Second question: The new HashSet must be the "this" used in the instance initializer ... can anyone shed light on the mechanism? Third question: Is this idiom too obscure to use in production code? Summary: Very, very nice answers, thanks everyone. On question (3), people felt the syntax should be clear (though I'd recommend an occasional comment, especially if your code will pass on to developers who may not be familiar with it). On question (1), The generated code should run quickly. The extra .class files do cause jar file clutter, and slow program startup slightly (thanks to coobird for measuring that). Thilo pointed out that garbage collection can be affected, and the memory cost for the extra loaded classes may be a factor in some cases. Question (2) turned out to be most interesting to me. If I understand the answers, what's happening in DBI is that the anonymous inner class extends the class of the object being constructed by the new operator, and hence has a "this" value referencing the instance being constructed. Very neat. Overall, DBI strikes me as something of an intellectual curiousity. Coobird and others point out you can achieve the same effect with Arrays.asList, varargs methods, Google Collections, and the proposed Java 7 Collection literals. Newer JVM languages like Scala, JRuby, and Groovy also offer concise notations for list construction, and interoperate well with Java. Given that DBI clutters up the classpath, slows down class loading a bit, and makes the code a tad more obscure, I'd probably shy away from it. However, I plan to spring this on a friend who's just gotten his SCJP and loves good natured jousts about Java semantics! ;-) Thanks everyone!

  Hi All, I have a huge database (800MB) which consists of a field called 'Date Last Modified' at the moment this field is entered as a text data type but need to change it to a Date/Time field to carry out some queries. I have another exact same database but with only 35MB of data inside it and when I change the data type it works fine, but when I try to change data type on big database it gives me an error: Micorosoft Office Access can't change the data type. There isn't enough disk space or memory After doing some research some sites mentioned of changing the registry file (MaxLocksPerFile) tried that as well, but no luck :-( Can anyone help please?

• What is so bad about using SQL INNER JOIN

  Everytime a database diagram gets looked out, one area people are critical of is inner joins. They look at them hard and has questions to see if an inner join really needs to be there. Simple Library Example: A many-to-many relationship is normally defined in SQL with three tables: Book, Category, BookCategory. In this situation, Category is a table that contains two columns: ID, CategoryName. In this situation, I have gotten questions about the Category table, is it need? Can it be used as a lookup table, and in the BookCategory table store the CategoryName instead of the CategoryID to stop from having to do an additional INNER JOIN. (For this question, we are going to ignore the changing, deleting of any CategoryNames) The question is, what is so bad about inner joins? At what point is doing them a negative thing (general guidelines like # of transactions, # of records, # of joins in a statement, etc)?

  Hi, I'm trying to optimize my page load times, and I'm using Pingdom to test the site response times. However, I'm not exactly sure what the various components of the "time bar" mean. • PHP script keeps doing mmap/munmap

  Hello, My PHP script contains a loop, which does nothing much more than echoing and dereferencing pointers (like in $tab[$othertab[$i]]- stuff). It was working great until yesterday, when this script starting being VERY slow (like 50 times slower than before). After using strace, i figured out that 90% of the time, the script does mmap/munmap. On an other server, the same script works fine. The script takes up to 90% of CPU when running. Any ideas?
