• Calculating a Sample Covariance Matrix for Groups with plyr

  I'm going to use the sample code from http://gettinggeneticsdone.blogspot.com/2009/11/split-apply-and-combine-in-r-using-plyr.html for this example. So, first, let's copy their example data: mydata=data.frame(X1=rnorm(30), X2=rnorm(30,5,2), SNP1=c(rep("AA",10), rep("Aa",10), rep("aa",10)), SNP2=c(rep("BB",10), rep("Bb",10), rep("bb",10))) I am going to ignore SNP2 in this example and just pretend the values in SNP1 denote group membership. So then, I may want some summary statistics about each group in SNP1: "AA", "Aa", "aa". Then if I want to calculate the means for each variable, it makes sense (modifying their code slightly) to use: > ddply(mydata, c("SNP1"), function(df) data.frame(meanX1=mean(df$X1), meanX2=mean(df$X2))) SNP1 meanX1 meanX2 1 aa 0.05178028 4.812302 2 Aa 0.30586206 4.820739 3 AA -0.26862500 4.856006 But what if I want the sample covariance matrix for each group? Ideally, I would like a 3D array, where the I have the covariance matrix for each group, and the third dimension denotes the corresponding group. Really this is a sliced up version of the covariance matrix for each group. Any thoughts on where I went wrong with daply() or suggestions? Of course, I could typecast the list from dlply() to a 3D array, but I'd rather not do this because I will be repeating this process many times in a simulation. As a side note, I found one method (http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg86328.html) that provides the sample covariance matrix for each group, but the outputted object is bloated.   I would like to create a list of Integers in the /res folder of an android project. However, I want those integers to point resources in /res/raw. So for example, I would like something like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <resources> <integer-array name="built_in_sounds"> <item>@raw/sound</item> </integer-array> </resources> But id doesn't look like I can do that, is there any way to do this? Or should I just create the list in a java class? Thank you

• MS-Access nested DIR - check if a file exists elsewhere whilst looping through a folder

  I have used the DIR() command in Microsoft Access 2003 to loop through the files in folder A. This works fine, but I need to check if each file also exists in another location (folder B), and only process the file if it doesn't exist in folder B. The problem is that checking for the file existing in folder B also uses the DIR() function and this then resets or confuses the original one, with the result that no further files are found in folder A. Is there a way to check if a file exists without using DIR? Or, is there a way to have a separate instance of DIR? I suppose I could build a list of the files in folder A into an array and then process the entries in the array, but this seems rather 'clunky' Any suggestions for a better solution? Thanks

• How should I change my Graph structure (very slow insertion)?

  Hi, This program I'm doing is about a social network, which means there are users and their profiles. The profiles structure is UserProfile. Now, there are various possible Graph implementations and I don't think I'm using the best one. I have a Graph structure and inside, there's a pointer to a linked list of type Vertex. Each Vertex element has a value, a pointer to the next Vertex and a pointer to a linked list of type Edge. Each Edge element has a value (so I can define weights and whatever it's needed), a pointer to the next Edge and a pointer to the Vertex owner. I have a 2 sample files with data to process (in CSV style) and insert into the Graph. The first one is the user data (one user per line); the second one is the user relations (for the graph). The first file is quickly inserted into the graph cause I always insert at the head and there's like ~18000 users. The second file takes ages but I still insert the edges at the head. The file has about ~520000 lines of user relations and takes between 13-15mins to insert into the Graph. I made a quick test and reading the data is pretty quickly, instantaneously really. The problem is in the insertion. This problem exists because I have a Graph implemented with linked lists for the vertices. Every time I need to insert a relation, I need to lookup for 2 vertices, so I can link them together. This is the problem... Doing this for ~520000 relations, takes a while. How should I solve this? Solution 1) Some people recommended me to implement the Graph (the vertices part) as an array instead of a linked list. This way I have direct access to every vertex and the insertion is probably going to drop considerably. But, I don't like the idea of allocating an array with [18000] elements. How practically is this? My sample data has ~18000, but what if I need much less or much more? The linked list approach has that flexibility, I can have whatever size I want as long as there's memory for it. But the array doesn't, how am I going to handle such situation? What are your suggestions? Using linked lists is good for space complexity but bad for time complexity. And using an array is good for time complexity but bad for space complexity. Any thoughts about this solution? Solution 2) This project also demands that I have some sort of data structures that allows quick lookup based on a name index and an ID index. For this I decided to use Hash Tables. My tables are implemented with separate chaining as collision resolution and when a load factor of 0.70 is reach, I normally recreate the table. I base the next table size on this http://planetmath.org/encyclopedia/GoodHashTablePrimes.html. Currently, both Hash Tables hold a pointer to the UserProfile instead of duplication the user profile itself. That would be stupid, changing data would require 3 changes and it's really dumb to do it that way. So I just save the pointer to the UserProfile. The same user profile pointer is also saved as value in each Graph Vertex. So, I have 3 data structures, one Graph and two Hash Tables and every single one of them point to the same exact UserProfile. The Graph structure will serve the purpose of finding the shortest path and stuff like that while the Hash Tables serve as quick index by name and ID. What I'm thinking to solve my Graph problem is to, instead of having the Hash Tables value point to the UserProfile, I point it to the corresponding Vertex. It's still a pointer, no more and no less space is used, I just change what I point to. Like this, I can easily and quickly lookup for each Vertex I need and link them together. This will insert the ~520000 relations pretty quickly. I thought of this solution because I already have the Hash Tables and I need to have them, then, why not take advantage of them for indexing the Graph vertices instead of the user profile? It's basically the same thing, I can still access the UserProfile pretty quickly, just go to the Vertex and then to the UserProfile. But, do you see any cons on this second solution against the first one? Or only pros that overpower the pros and cons on the first solution? Other Solution) If you have any other solution, I'm all ears. But please explain the pros and cons of that solution over the previous 2. I really don't have much time to be wasting with this right now, I need to move on with this project, so, if I'm doing to do such a change, I need to understand exactly what to change and if that's really the way to go. Hopefully no one fell asleep reading this and closed the browser, sorry for the big testament. But I really need to decide what to do about this and I really need to make a change. P.S: When answering my proposed solutions, please enumerate them as I did so I know exactly what are you talking about and don't confuse my self more than I already am.

• Invalid character in a Base-64 string when Concatenating and Url encoding a string

  I’m trying to write some encryption code that is passed through a Url. For the sake of the issue I’ve excluded the actual encryption of the data and just shown the code causing the problem. I take a salt value, convert it to a byte array and then convert that to a base64 string. This string I concatenate to another base64 string (which was previously a byte array). These two base64 strings are then Url encoded. • How to make multiple queries with PHP prepared statements (Commands out of sync error)

  I'm trying to run three MySQL queries from a PHP script, the first one works fine, but on the second one I get the "Commands out of sync; you can’t run this command now" error. I have managed to understand that I need to "empty" the resultset before preparing a new query but I can't seem to understand how. I thought that $statement-close; would do that for me. • Finding backedges in a graph, with special conditions.

  There is a vertex v, such that from the subtree rooted at v, there are at least two backedges to proper ancestors of v. The problem is finding whether such backedges exist or not ( finding v is not important at all). I run DFS algorithm, I can find backedges and save them in an array. I know which backedges in this array belong to a common tree. but I have problem on matching this condition in O(E) time. can anyone help me with that?

  I'm attempting to develop an audit trail/tracking solution for an existing database written in PLSQL/PHP - however I'm still unsure as of yet on an easy (to implement and maintain) solution for tracking changes to fields/values. For instance, the project tracking portion of the DB APP tracks over 200 fields and ideally I'd like a nice way to show a history of changes, such as: 5/10/2010 - Project 435232 updated by John Doe Changed Project Name (Old: Test Project; New: Super Test Project) Changed Submission Date (Old: 5/10/2010; New: 5/11/2010) Changed Description (Old: This is an example!; New: This is a test example) Essentially for each field (db column) it would output a new line to show the old/new values. So far my current idea is saving the current version of the data to a temporary table, updating the primary table with the new data then loading each row into an array and doing an array compare to determine the differences. This seems a bit convoluted, and if there is an easier method I'd love to know it. Any ideas or suggestions are much appreciated!

  Hi, I'm trying to integrate Sugar CRM with one of my projects. I'm using Apache Axis as my SOAP client. I've created the Sugar CRM client Stub classes using Apache Axis. I'm able to login and add Leads, Opportunities, Accounts and Contacts. But I'm unable to add a relation ship between my Account and Opportunity. I've found following method in the SugarsoapPortType port.set_relationship(session, module_name, module_id, link_field_name, related_ids, name_value_list, delete) but I cannot understand the different parameters required by this method. I want to fetch array of values of a single column in a table, for example, I have a table named Customer(ID,Name), and want to fetch ids of all customers. my query in LINQ is: var ids = db.Customers.Select(c=>c.ID).ToList(); The answer of this query is correct, but I ran SQL Server Profiler, and saw the query which was like this: SELECT [t0].[ID], [t0].[Name] FROM [dbo].[Customer] AS [t0] I understood that LINQ selects all columns and then creates the integer array of ID fields. How can I write a LINQ query which generates this query in SQL Server: SELECT [t0].[ID] FROM [dbo].[Customer] AS [t0] Thank you.

• mysql select query problem

  i have a form that has a multiple select drop down. a user can select more than one options in the select. the name of the select is array[]; using php i implode(",",$array) in mysql db, it stores the field as a text in this format "places"= "new york, toronto, london" when i want to display these fields i explode the commas. i am trying to run a report to display the places. here is my select: "select * from mytable where db.places .. userSelectedPlaces" how can i check toronto in lists of "places" that user selected? note "places" in the db might be either just "toronto" or it might be comma separated lists of places like "ny, toronto, london, paris, etc".

• How to include simple collections in ConfigurationSection

  Is there a way for me to include a simple array of strings, or List<string> on my custom subclass of ConfigurationSection? (Or an array or generic list of simple data objects, for that matter?) I'm becoming familiar with the new (and VERY verbose) ConfigurationSection, ConfigurationElement, and ConfigurationElementCollection classes, but I'm by no means an expert yet. It seems like ConfigurationSection should handle simple collections/lists on its own, without me having to create a custom ConfigurationElementCollection subclass for each and every one. But I haven't found any reference to this ability online.

• jQuery gallery turn over with next and previous buttons

  Hi, i'm trying to do some kind of Gallery-Turn Over Script with jQuery. Therefor i got an array with - let's say 13 - images: galleryImages = new Array( 'images/tb_01.jpg', 'images/tb_02.jpg', 'images/tb_03.jpg', 'images/tb_04.jpg', 'images/tb_05.jpg', 'images/tb_06.jpg', 'images/tb_07.jpg', 'images/tb_08.jpg', 'images/tb_09.jpg', 'images/tb_10.jpg', 'images/tb_11.jpg', 'images/tb_12.jpg', 'images/tb_13.jpg' ); My gallery looks like a grid showing only 9 images at once. My current script already counts the number of li-elements in #gallery, loads the first 9 images and displays them. The HTML looks like this: <ul id="gallery"> <li></li> <li></li> <li></li> <li></li> <li></li> <li></li> <li></li> <li></li> <li></li> </ul> <ul id="gallery-controls"> <li id="gallery-prev"><a href="#">Previous</a></li> <li id="gallery-next"><a href="#">Next</a></li> </ul> I'm pretty new to jQuery an my problem is that i can't figure out how to split the array in portions with 9 elements to attach it as a link on the control buttons. • Powershell - Splitting variable into chunks

  I have written a query in Powershell interrogating a F5 BIG-IP box through it's iControl API to bring back CPU usage etc. Using this code (see below) I can return the data back into a CSV format which is fine. However the $csvdata variable contains all the data. I need to be able to take this variable and for each line split each column of data into a seperate variable. • jQuery Resizable() UI Problem

  In general, resizable() works fine. Here is where I am getting into an issue. I have a div that contains some resizable items that work fine (resizable() applied to them at some point). user can save items for later view (the innerHTML of the div gets saved into a JavaScript array, then div gets cleared so they can do something else) When items get placed back onto div (from array) -- I do a $('#divname').append(arrayname[i]); -- items are no longer resizable (although visually they have the resizable classes/handle on them) Here is what I have tried so far (none of which have worked): After append() line, I re-initialize the resizable -- $('#items').resizable(); After append() line, remove then re-add resizable -- $('#items').resizable('destroy').resizable(); Any help is appreciated - thanks.
