    I remember reading an article saying something like "The number of bugs introduced doesn't vary much with different programming languages, but it depends pretty much on SLOC (source lines of code). So, using the programming language that can implement the same functions with smaller SLOC is preferable in terms of stability." The author wanted to stress the advantages of using Functional Programming, as normally one can program with a smaller number of LOC. I remember the author cited a research paper about the irrelevance of choice of programming language and the number of bugs. Is there anyone who knows the research paper or the article?

  • Horizontally Flip a One Bit Bitmap Line

    I'm looking for an algorithm to flip a 1 Bit Bitmap line horizontally. Remember these lines are DWORD aligned! I'm currently unencoding an RLE stream to an 8 bit-per-pixel buffer, then re-encoding to a 1 bit line, however, I would like to try and keep it all in the 1 bit space in an effort to increase its speed. Am I allowed to then say to them that they can use it under LGPL/MIT or any other license? If so, would I then have to change the included header at the top of each file? If so, what is stopping someone else from changing the license on my code?

  • Some $_SERVER parameters missing when accessing PHP script via Cron

    I have a script that I need to run with PHP via cron. The original author of the script made a lot of user of certain $_SERVER parameters (like REQUEST_URI). But it appears that certain variables don't exist when running PHP via command line or via CRON. For example, there is no request uri, so it makes sense that the REQUEST_URI parameter wouldn't be available. Is there any way around this other than to completely rewrite the script in order to avoid using special $_SERVER parameters that aren't universally available?

    Hi everyone, I would like to know is there any way to determine if a cone is intersecting with a (finite)line segment. The cone actually a circle located at P(x,y) with theta degree field of view and radius r. The simple visualization can be found here (sorry i can't post the picture here) I'm trying to do it in C# but I don't have any idea how to that, so for now this is what I'm doing : Check if the line segment is intersecting with the circle If the line segment is intersecting with the circle then I check every single point in the line segment using a function I found here. But I don't think this is the best way to do it. Does anyone have an idea? For additional info, I need this function to make some kind of simple vision simulator. Thanks in advance :)

  • Need help automating a task in Linux

    I'm still kind of new to Linux, but here's what I'm trying to do. I need to copy all subdirectories and files from one directory to another ever 5 minutes or so, with the old data automatically being overwritten with the new data. I'd also like this to run at startup. Is there any way this can be done? If so, what program would I need to schedule the automation and what is the command line I would need (cp ???).   • What was the motivation for adding the IPV6_V6ONLY flag?

    In IPv6 networking, the IPV6_V6ONLY flag is used to ensure that a socket will only use IPv6, and in particular that IPv4-to-IPv6 mapping won't be used for that socket. On many OS's, the IPV6_V6ONLY is not set by default, but on some OS's (e.g. Windows 7), it is set by default. My question is: What was the motivation for introducing this flag? Is there something about IPv4-to-IPv6 mapping that was causing problems, and thus people needed a way to disable it? It would seem to me that if someone didn't want to use IPv4-to-IPv6 mapping, they could simply not specify a IPv4-mapped IPv6 address. What am I missing here?

    Hey, I've been writing a networking server for a while now in C++ and have come to the stage to start looking for a way to properly and easily handle all packets. I am so far that I can figure out what kind of packet it is, but now I need to figure out how to get the needed data to the handler functions. I had the following in mind: Have a map of function pointers with the opcode as key and the function pointer as value Have all these functions have 2 arguments, packet and ObjectAccessor ObjectAccessor class contains various functions to fetch various items such as users and alike Perhaps pass the user's guid too so we can fetch it from the objectaccessor I'd like to know the various implementations others have come up with, so please comment on this idea and reply with your own implementations.   • Create a term-document matrix from files

    I have a set of files from example001.txt to example100.txt. Each file contains a list of keywords from a superset (the superset is available if we want it). So example001.txt might contain apple banana ... otherfruit I'd like to be able to process these files and produce something akin to a matrix so there is the list of examples* on the top row, the fruit down the side, and a '1' in a column if the fruit is in the file. An example might be... x example1 example2 example3 Apple 1 1 0 Babana 0 1 0 Coconut 0 1 1 Any idea how I might build some sort of command-line magic to put this together?     I was wondering while developing some application (though this is not a development question) if the cd command used in Windows is a wildcard or cross-platform command of sorts. I looked up on table with comands for Unix/Linux and MAC OS X and it turns out that it seems to be there. I am not a multi-os user, so I ask if anyone with experience in different OSes can tell me: If this command really exists and works If it has the same functionality (change directory) If there are any problems with its use If in any OS there is another command-line command that does the same in a better/more elaborate/more frequetly used way.     I've got a large amount of .MKV video files which seem to all play at a very low volume - I end up having to turn the TV up all the way to hear them, which is really irritating when I switch to another channel and wake the dead because it's so loud. What I'm looking for is a command-line method to increase the volume (so I can run it on all of them quickly) that would hopefully work regardless of the audio codec in use in the particular file. (I don't mind hard-coding the output audio though). For reference, I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 on my server, and the files are being played back with Boxee on a Mac Mini, but the volume problem is the same on Windows too.

    Since I am a beginner in the world of internet/networking, I always mess up with these kinds of doubts in my head while programming ;) .. My doubts are, While working behind a proxy, how my requests and responses work? Means my request headers and data will first reach to Proxy server- then proxy server sends it(same headers and data) to corresponding server. And server responses to it with a response header and body to the proxy server-then proxy server sends it to my computer. Wright? While using websockets we are upgrading our http connection to tcp. At this time what is happening @ Proxy server? Does the proxyserver also upgrades its connection to plain TCP? After opening such TCP connections, does the proxy server able to track/log those socket messsages? And most importantly, Is the proxy server transparent or acting like an original server infront of a client? Thanks for any answers or helpful links in advance.

    Suppose I have a program named any_program.exe and my operating system drive is C:. The location of the program is D:\Any_Folder\any_program.exe How do I start/execute that program via command prompt in Windows 8? I have tried the command line START any_program.exe, but it shows me an error that Windows cannot find 'any_program.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. By the way, it worked perfectly in Windows 7. And, if I type START notepad.exe or START firefox.exe (Firefox is not installed in C: drive), it works in Windows 8.
