  • What's the best way to run Wordpress on the same domain as a Rails application?

    - by Brian Deterling
    I've got a standard Rails app with Nginx and Mongrel running at http://mydomain. I need to run a Wordpress blog at http://mydomain.com/blog. My preference would be to host the blog in Apache running on either the same server or a separate box but I don't want the user to see a different server in the URL. Is that possible and if not, what would you recommend to accomplish the goal?

  • Best approach to creating a database driven Java website?

    - by Craig Whitley
    I'm fairly new to programming and new to java, but I'd like to jump in the deep end with a little database driven website project. I've read quite a lot about requirements in the 'real world' requesting experience with Spring and Hibernate, so I have those installed on netbeans and a project created (if I hit run I get the default spring page). Now I just need a little guidance as to where to start designing my app (please tell me if I'm getting in a bit too over my head for a beginner!). Should I start off with my classes? - create all my classes as they map to my database tables and decide which attributes and methods each will require? Can anyone suggest any good books for maybe.. making a java based website from scratch (i.e. from design right through to deployment) that might be useful for a beginner? Any help appreciated thanks.

  • Best way to manage JSON object via GET and POST in php.

    - by Kucebe
    My site does some short ajax call in JSON format, using jQuery. At client-side i'd like to send object just passing it in ajax function, without being forced to wrap it in an object literal like this: {'JSON_Obj' : myJSON_Obj }. For the same reasons, at server-side i'd like to manage objects without the binding of $_GET['JSON_Obj'] or $_POST['JSON_Obj']. For example, using file_get_contents("php://input"), i can manage POST requests in that way, but in GET format it doesn't work. Any suggestions?

  • What's the best way to build software that doesn't require the newest glibc?

    - by ZorbaTHut
    I'm attempting to build a binary package that can be run on multiple Linux distributions. It's currently built on Ubuntu 10.04, but it fails on Ubuntu 8.04 with the following error: ./test: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.11' not found (required by ./test) ./test: /usr/lib/libstdc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.11' not found (required by ./test) What's the preferred way to solve this problem? Is there a way to install an old glibc on a new box and build against it, or do I have to build on an old distribution? And if I build against an old glibc, will it work on a new glibc? Or, alternatively, are there just some handy compiler flags or packages I could install to solve the problem?

  • Need Insight - What is the best practice for syncing up a production database that will be used on a

    - by james
    I have a site set up using CakePHP and MySQL and I want to work on a test database without disrupting my live site in case something goes wrong. I have another busy site, but my test site runs off the live database which can be occasionally nerve wracking. What do I do if I change a table name in the test db and I want it changed in the live database? Or if I remove a record from the test database. Is there a way to diff the changes? How do I even merge those changes? How does this interfere with live user edits and things of that nature? Hopefully some of you working devs can share some insight!

  • Best way to implement a data structure in PHP ?

    - by Double Gras
    Hi, I want to use some kind of data structure in PHP (5.2), mainly in order to not pollute the global namespace. I think about two approaches, using an array or a class. Could you tell me which approach is better ? Thanks $SQL_PARAMETERS = array ( 'server' => '127.0.0.1', 'login' => 'root'); class SqlParameters { const SERVER = '127.0.0.1'; const LOGIN = 'root'; } echo $SQL_PARAMETERS['server']; echo SqlParameters::SERVER;

  • What is the best AI language/framework for .NET?

    - by Eduardo Cobuci
    I'm building an academic work that consists in a turn-based strategy game. I'm using XNA 3 for the graphics but didn't decide what to use for AI. I was considering to use P#, a Prolog interpreter for .NET but i found it a bit poor. Do you anything better for game AI than Prolog (maybe Haskell?) or a better interpreter then P#?

  • What's the best way to get a bunch of rows from MySQL if you have an array of integer primary keys?

    - by Evan P.
    I have a MySQL table with an auto-incremented integer primary key. I want to get a bunch of rows from the table based on an array of integers I have in memory in my program. The array ranges from a handful to about 1000 items. What's the most efficient query syntax to get the rows? I can think of a few: "SELECT * FROM thetable WHERE id IN (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)" (this is what I do now) "SELECT * FROM thetable where id = 1 OR id = 2 OR id = 3" Multiple queries of the form "SELECT * FROM thetable WHERE id = 1". Probably the most friendly to the query cache, but expensive due to having lots of query parsing. A union, like "SELECT * FROM thetable WHERE id = 1 UNION SELECT * FROM thetable WHERE id = 2 ..." I'm not sure if MySQL caches the results of each query; it's also the most verbose format. I think using the NoSQL interface in MySQL 5.6+ would be the most efficient way to do this, but I'm not yet up to MySQL 5.6.

  • Best tree/heap data structure for fixed set of nodes with changing values + need top 20 values?

    - by user350139
    I'm writing something like a game in C++ where I have a database table containing the current score for each user. I want to read that table into memory at the start of the game, quickly change each user's score while the game is being played in response to what each user does, and then when the game ends write the current scores back to the database. I also want to be able to find the 20 or so users with the highest scores. No users will be added or deleted during the short period when the game is being played. I haven't tried it yet, but updating the database might take too much time during the period when the game is being played. Fixed set of users (might be 10,000 to 50,000 users) Will map user IDs to their score and other user-specific information. User IDs will be auto_increment values. If the structure has a high memory overhead that's probably not an issue. If the program crashes during gameplay it can just be re-started. Quickly get a user's current score. Quickly add to a user's current score (and return their current score) Quickly get 20 users with highest score. No deletes. No inserts except when the structure is first created, and how long that takes isn't critical. Getting the top 20 users will only happen every five or ten seconds, but getting/adding will happen much more frequently. If not for the last, I could just create a memory block equal to sizeof(user) * max(user id) and put each user at user id * sizeof(user) for fast access. Should I do that plus some other structure for the Top 20 feature, or is there one structure that will handle all of this together?

  • What Android tools and methods work best to find memory/resource leaks?

    - by jottos
    I've got an Android app developed, and I'm at the point of a phone app development where everything seems to be working well and you want to declare victory and ship, but you know there just have to be some memory and resource leaks in there; and there's only 16mb of heap on the Android and its apparently surprisingly easy to leak in an Android app. I've been looking around and so far have only been able to dig up info on 'hprof' and 'traceview' and neither gets a lot of favorable reviews. What tools or methods have you come across or developed and care to share maybe in an OS project?

  • On Google AppEngine what is the best way to merge two tables?

    - by gpjones
    If I have two tables, Company and Sales, and I want to display both sets of data in a single list, how would I do this on Google App Engine using GQL? The models are: class Company(db.Model): companyname = db.StringProperty() companyid = db.StringProperty() salesperson = db.StringProperty() class Sales(db.Model): companyid = db.StringProperty() weeklysales = db.StringProperty() monthlysales = db.StringProperty() The views are: def company(request): companys = db.GqlQuery("SELECT * FROM Company") sales = db.GqlQuery("SELECT * FROM Sales") template_values = { 'companys' : companys, 'sales' : sales } return respond(request, 'list', template_values) List html includes: {%for company in companys%} {% for sale in sales %} {% ifequal company.companyid sales.companyid %} {{sales.weeklysales}} {{sales.monthlysales}} {% endifequal %} {% endfor %} {{company.companyname}} {{company.companyid}} {{company.salesperson}} {%endfor%} Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • What is the best way to inject a javascript script from another domain into a page? (without using a

    - by lowellk
    Here is a snippet of javascript for loading a script onto a given page asynchronously. I was wondering if there was anything wrong with it? Can it be improved? I haven't played with this yet, but some things I'm worried about are: - cross browser support - when script.readyState is true, will the old version of that function get clobbered? - can i always count on there being a head or body element? Here it is: function injectScript(url, callback){ var script = document.createElement('script'); script.type = "text/javascript"; script.setAttribute('async', 'true'); script.src = url; (document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0] || document.getElementsByTagName('body')[0]).appendChild(script); if (callback) { if (script.readyState){ script.onreadystatechange = function(){ if(script.readyState === "loaded" || script.readyState === "complete"){ script.onreadystatechange = null; callback(); } }; }else{ script.onload = function() { callback(); } } } }

  • Best way to migrate servers without losing any data and with no downtime(?)

    - by ina
    This is a methodology question from a freelancer, with a corollary on MySQL.. Is there a way to migrate from an old dedicated server to a new one without losing any data in-between - and with no downtime? In the past, I've had to lose MySQL data between the time when the new server goes up (i.e., all files transferred, system up and ready), and when I take the old server down (data still transferred to old until new one takes over). There is also a short period where both are down for DNS, etc., to refresh. Is there a way for MySQL/root to easily transfer all data that was updated/inserted between a certain time frame?

  • best SEO method for date in url structure? [closed]

    - by Haroldo
    I'm working on an events website so dates are very important search terms, ie: 'whats on on fri 14th september' I've seen it done in various methods for example: domain/whats-on/city-hall/14-09-2010/event-name.html domain/whats-on/city-hall/2010/09/14/event-name.html the first is 'shallower'. the second could be clearer for google to synonym-ize as a date, has anyone else got any experience or input?

  • Xcode File management. What is best practice?

    - by ian1971
    I've been using Xcode for a while now. One thing that always bugs me is the way it handles files. I like to have my files all in nested folders rather than one big physical folder, but when you create a group in Xcode by default it does not create a folder just a virtual folder within the project. I can see that virtual folders are great for linking code in arbitrary places into your project but once you get beyond a few classes I find the one big folder approach really painful. And then if you try to fix it later it takes ages and is easy to break your build. Is it possible to change this behaviour so that by default it creates a physical folder? Or am I doing it wrong and trying to cling to some other way of working? How do other people work with files in Xcode?

  • Which is the best java driver for mongodb access?

    - by Samuel
    I have no experience with MongoDB and we are trying to port a JPA application to be based on MongoDB. There are 3 drivers mentioned for porting java here. Which driver would be the easiest to use for converting my existing JPA application? Would it be morphia, mungbean or daybreak. Would prefer some practical experiences with users who have gone through this path before.
