• CakePHP dropping session between pages

  Hi, I have an application with multiple regions and various incoming links. The premise, well it worked before, is that in the app_controller, I break out these incoming links and set them in the session. So I have a huge beforeFilter() in my *app_controller* which catches these and sets two variables in the session. Viewing.region and Search.engine, no problem. The problem arises that the session does not seem to be persistant across page requests. So for example, going to /reviews/write (userReviews/add) should have a session available which was set when the user arrived at the site. Although it seems to have vanished! It would appear that unless $this-params is caught explicitly in the *app_controller* and a session variable written, it does not exist on other pages. So far I have tried, swapping between storing session in 'cake' and 'php' both seem to exhibit the same behaviour. I use 'php' as a default. My Session.timeout is '120', Session.checkAgent is False and Security.level is 'low'. All of which should give enough leniency to the framework to allow sessions the most room to live! I'm a bit stumped as to why the session seems to be either recreated or blanked when a new page is being requested. I have commented out the requestAction() calls to make sure that isn't confusing the session request object also, which doesn't seem to make a difference. Any help would be great, as I don't have to have to recode the site to pass all the various variables via parameters in the url, as that would suck, and it's worked before, thus switching on $this-Session-read('Viewing.region') in all my code!

• What techniques can I employ to create a series of UI Elements from a collection of objects using WP

  I'm new to WPF and before I dive in solving a problem in completely the wrong way I was wondering if WPF is clever enough to handle something for me. Imagine I have a collection containing objects. Each object is of the same known type and has two parameters. Name (a string) and Picked (a boolean). The collection will be populated at run time. I would like to build up a UI element at run time that will represent this collection as a series of checkboxes. I want the Picked parameter of any given object in the collection updated if the user changes the selected state of the checkbox. To me, the answer is simple. I iterate accross the collection and create a new checkbox for each object, dynamically wiring up a ValueChanged event to capture when Picked should be changed. It has occured to me, however, that I may be able to harness some unknown feature of WPF to do this better (or "properly"). For example, could data binding be employed here? I would be very interested in anyone's thoughts. • Threading in Android

  I am currently developing Android app, it needs download content from internet. I use thread to do that and then call runOnUiThread method to update GUI. I placed a refresh menu on it, if user tried to refresh the content, the download thread will be created and started. The problem is that how can I control the thread order, I need to accept the latest request's response and abandon previous thread requests if there were some other requests still running because the request parameters may have been changed by user. Currently I was using a threadId to do this thing, when a thread finished, it will check its threadId, if it was the latest recored one, it then takes control and render the response. My question is that is there any other proper better solution for this? Do I need to stop threads when user exit the app? I remember that some book said that do not try stop thread manually and wait itself finish is a good practice, is that true? Should I stop them by calling "stop" or "interrupt" method? I read some documents around threading in Android and found the class HandlerThread, what is it? In what kind of situation I need to use it?

• Is Safari on iOS 6 caching $.ajax results?

  Since the upgrade to iOS 6, we are seeing Safari's web view take the liberty of caching $.ajax calls. This is in the context of a PhoneGap application so it is using the Safari WebView. Our $.ajax calls are POST methods and we have cache set to false {cache:false}, but still this is happening. We tried manually adding a timestamp to the headers but it did not help. We did more research and found that Safari is only returning cached results for web services that have a function signature that is static and does not change from call to call. For instance, imagine a function called something like: getNewRecordID(intRecordType) This function receives the same input parameters over and over again, but the data it returns should be different every time. Must be in Apple's haste to make iOS 6 zip along impressively they got too happy with the cache settings. Has anyone else seen this behavior on iOS 6? If so, what exactly is causing it? The workaround that we found was to modify the function signature to be something like this: getNewRecordID(intRecordType, strTimestamp) and then always pass in a timestamp parameter as well, and just discard that value on the server side. This works around the issue. I hope this helps some other poor soul who spends 15 hours on this issue like I did!

• auto_complete plugin error: Couldn't find Question with ID=auto_complete_for_tag_tag_name

  I have successfully set up this plugin before so I am curious as to what I am doing wrong here. I have built the ability for users to add tags to questions. I am not using tagging plugin here but that shouldn't matter for this. With respect to the auto complete, I am trying to have the form located in the /views/questions/show.html.erb file access the Tags table and display entries in the tags.tags_name column. The plugin set up is fairly simple as you add the following line to your controller: auto_complete_for :tag, :tag_name and the following line in your routes.rb file: map.resources :tags, :collection => {:auto_complete_for_tag_tag_name => :get } I have added the controller line to both my tags and questions controller and also mapped resources for both tags and questions in my routes.rb file: map.resources :tags, :collection => {:auto_complete_for_tag_tag_name => :get } map.resources :questions, :collection => {:auto_complete_for_tag_tag_name => :get } I have played around with removing either or of the above but can't seem to fix it. Any ideas what I am doing wrong here?

• How do I handle freeing unmanaged structures on application close?

  I have a C# project in which i use several unmanaged C++ functions. More so, I also have static IntPtr that I use as parameters for those functions. • Asynchronous SQL Operations

  I've got a problem I'm not sure how best to solve. I have an application which updates a database in response to ad hoc requests. One request in particular is quite common. The request is an update that by itself is quite simple, but has some complex preconditions. For this request the business layer first requests a set of data from the data layer. The business logic layer evaluated the data from the database and parameters from the request, from this the action to be performed is determined, and the request's response message(s) are created. The business layer now executes the actual update command that is the purpose of the request. This last step is the problem, this command is dependent on the state of the database, which might have changed since the business logic ran. Locking down the data read in this operation across several round-trips to the database doesn't seem like a good idea either. Is there a 'best-practice' way to accomplish something like this?   I have a method for reading JSON from a service, I'm using Gson to do my serialization and have written the following method using type parameters. public T getDeserializedJSON(Class<T> aClass,String url) { Reader r = getJSONDataAsReader(url); Gson gson = new Gson(); return gson.fromJson(r, aClass); } I'm consuming json which returns just an array of a type e.g. [ { "prop":"value" } { "prop":"value" } ] I have a java class which maps to this object let's call it MyClass. However to use my method I need to do this: RestClient<ArrayList<MyClass>> restClient = new RestClient<ArrayList<MyClass>>(); ArrayList<MyClass> results = restClient.getDeserializedJSON(ArrayList<MyClass>.class, url); However, I can't figure out the syntax to do it. Passing just ArrayList.class doesn't work. So is there a way I can get rid of the Class parameter or how do I get the class of the ArrayList of MyClass?

• New to JEE; architecture suggestions for a service/daemon?

  I am brand new to the JEE world. As an exercise to try and familiarize myself with JEE, I'm trying to create a tiered web-app, but I'm getting a little stuck on what the best way is to spin up a service in the background that does work. Parameters of the service: It must open and hold a socket connection and receive information from the connected server. There is a 1-to-1 correlation between a user and a new socket connection. So the idea is the user presses a button on the web-page, and somewhere on the server a socket connection is opened. For the remainder of the users session (or until the user presses some sort of disconnect button) the socket remains open and pushes received information to some sort of centralized store that servlets can query and return to the user via AJAX. Is there a JEE type way to handle this situation? Naturally what I would think to do is to just write a Java application that listens on a port that the servlets can connect to and spawns new threads that open these sockets, but that seems very ad-hoc to me. (PS: I am also new to Stack Overflow, so forgive me if it takes me some time to figure the site out!)

• JSF getter methods called BEFORE beforePhase fires

  I got a recommendation to put all data lookups in the beforePhase for a given page, however, now that I am doing some deeper analysis it appears that some getter methods are being called before the beforePhase is fired. It became very obvious when I added support for a url parameter and I was getting NPEs on objects that are initialized in the beforePhase call. Any thoughts? Something I have set wrong. I have this in my JSP page: <f:view beforePhase="#{someController.beforePhaseSummary}"> That is only the 5th line in the JSP file and is right after the taglibs. • Using external SOAP service in Workflow service

  I am using the .NET 4 framework and have made a WCF Workflow Service Application. I want to use a SOAP web service (.NET 3.5) I have running in another instance of VS. The only method that is exposed is the following: [WebMethod] public string Reverse(string input) { char[] chars = input.ToCharArray(); Array.Reverse(chars); return new string(chars); } I have used the following steps to add the service in my Workflow: Add Service Reference Provided the WSDL (the operation shows in the Operations box as expected) Clicked OK Build the solution to ensure that the service shows in my toolbox Drag the service from the toolbox into the workflow However, when I look at the properties of the service in the workflow, there is no way to specify the input argument or where to store the result of the invocation of the service. I only have the option of specifying some obscure parameters such as Body:InArgument<ReverseRequestBody and outBody:OutArgument<ReverseResponseBody (none of which are strings). Here is a screenshot depicting the properties of the service in the workflow: My question is therefore: Is it possible at all to use the SOAP service by specifying a string as the input argument (like it is meant to be used), and also assign the result to a workflow variable?

  I'm adding some models to a project, and was wondering if there is a "best practice" kind of approach to creating models: Does it make sense to create a function for each specific query? I was starting to do this, then had the idea of creating a generic function that I could pass parameters to. e.g: Instead of function getClients(){ return $this->db->query('SELECT client_id,last FROM Names ORDER BY id DESC'); } function getClientNames($clid){ return $this->db->query('SELECT * FROM Names WHERE client_id = '.$clid); } function getClientName($nameID){ return $this->db->query('SELECT * FROM Names WHERE id ='.$nameID); } } Something like function getNameData($args,$cond){ if($cond==''){ $q=$this->db->query('SELECT '.$args.' FROM Names'); return $q; }else{ $q=$this->db->query('SELECT '.$args.' FROM Names WHERE '.$cond); return $q; } } where I can pass the fields and conditions (if applicable) to the model. • TDD approach for complex function

  I have a method in a class for which they are a few different outcomes (based upon event responses etc). But this is a single atomic function which is to used by other applications. I have broken down the main blocks of the functionality that comprise this function into different functions and successfully taken a Test Driven Development approach to the functionality of each of these elements. These elements however aren't exposed for other applications would use. And so my question is how can/should i easily approach a TDD style solution to verifying that the single method that should be called does function correctly without a lot of duplication in testing or lots of setup required for each test? I have considered / looked at moving the blocks of functionality into a different class and use Mocking to simulate the responses of the functions used but it doesn't feel right and the individual methods need to write to variables within the main class (it felt really heath robinson). The code roughly looks like this (i have removed a lot of parameters to make things clearer along with a fair bit of irrelevant code). public void MethodToTest(string parameter) { IResponse x = null; if (function1(parameter)) { if (!function2(parameter,out x)) { function3(parameter, out x); } } // ... // more bits of code here // ... if (x != null) { x.Success(); } }

• POST method getting converted to GET in IE-9

  I have this line of code in my JSP. (I'm using struts 1.3) <html:form action="screening/mine.do" method="post"> . . . </html:form When the action corresponding to mine.do is invoked (using struts-config.xml), the page is getting submitted as GET instead of POST. All the request parameters including the required ones are getting lost due to this. This issue occcurs only in IE-9. The response remains as POST when I use other versions of IE or any other browsers. How do I make the response to remain as POST in IE-9 ? EDIT : I observed one more issue in this. Whenever the page is rendered in a new window, this issue occurs. Other places, the POST works fine in IE-9. Also, this issue occurs in Win7/IE-8, but works absolutely fine in XP/IE-8. Is there something to do with the OS as well??? Any solutions would be useful. Thanks!!

• Common methods/implementation across multiple WCF Services

  I'm looking at implementing some WCF Services as part of an API for 3rd parties to access data within a product I work on. There are currently a set of services exposed as "classic" .net Web Services and I need to emulate the behaviour of these, at least in part. The existing services all have an AcquireAuthenticationToken method that takes a set of parameters (username, password, etc) and return a session token (represented as a GUID), which is then passed in on calls to any other method (There's also a ReleaseAuthenticationToken method, no guesses needed as to what that does!). What I want to do is implement multiple WCF services, such as: ProductData UserData and have both of these services share a common implementation of Acquire/Release. From the base project that is created by VS2k8, it would appear I will start with, per service: public class ServiceName : IServiceName { } public interface IServiceName { } Therefore my questions would be: Will WCF tolerate me adding a base class to this, public class ServiceName : ServiceBase, IServiceName, or does the fact that there's an interface involved mean that won't work? If "No it won't work" to Question 1, could I change IServiceName so it extends another interface, IServiceBase, thus forcing the presence of Acquire/Release methods, but then having to supply the implementation in each service. Are 1 and 2 both really bad ideas and there's actually a much better solution that, knowing next to nothing about WCF, I just haven't thought of?

• Is it possible to anti alias using Copy swap effect?

  I'm developing an application in VB.Net using Managed DirectX that runs in windowed mode and renders onto a picture box that is smaller than the form. Whenever I resize the form, the back buffer is streched to fit the picture box. This is not what I would like. The backbuffer size is the same as screen size, however, I only want to render a part of the back buffer, whose size is controlled by the size of the picture box into which I'm rendering. Resetting the device with new presentation parameters is something I would like to avoid. I'm aware that I can use an overload of Device.Present if I set the swap effect to copy, but this doesn't allow me to use Multi Sample Anti Alias (which requires the Discard swap effect). It seems to me that the overload Device.Present is not usable with any other swap effect than copy, and throws an exception. An other alternative I considered is the PresentFlags.DeviceClip, however it seems that it works only for Windows XP. I'm using Windows 7 and it doesn't seem to be doing anything. So, is it even possible that I use anti-aliasing in this situation?

• Taking wrong database configuration array

  Hi, I have one application in which i have used 2 database connections. In my database config file i have given two arrays as below. $active_group = ‘default’; $active_record = TRUE; FIRST ARRAY $db[‘default’][‘hostname’] = ‘hostname’; .............. .......... SECOND ARRAY $db[‘another_db’][‘hostname’] = ‘hostname’; .............. .......... this is working fine. Now, I copied the entire CI folder to develop another application in which only one database connection needed. So, now, in the database config file, i deleted the second configuration array. But, the db class is taking first application’s second array i.e. “another_db” and it is giving the below error. “You have specified an invalid database connection group.” When i change the default (only one) array name to “another_db” in configuration file. It is working fine. Can’t understand from where it is taking the group name as “another_db”. My application autoloads database library. I have debugged the ci_auto_loader in Loader.php class where it calls $this-database() function with no parameters. But in function database($params, $, $) {}, if I echo $params it shows “another_db”.

• EGODatabase does not retain inserted record

  Hi Guy! I'm using EGODatabase to process my data. When I tried to insert data into the database which I created with Base and attached to the project, the data that was inserted programmatically will not show up when I restart my app.However the data inserted manually using Base will show up just fine. • Matching Class arrays

  I'm writing a routine to invoke methods, found by a name and an array of parameter Class values Matching the Method by getName works, but when trying to match the given Class[] for parameters, and Method.getParameterTypes(), I'm having trouble. I assumed that this would work: Class[] searchParams = new Class[] { float.class, String.class }; Class[] methodParams = m.getParameterTypes(); if(methodParams == searchParams) { m.invoke(this, paramValues); } But apparantly not - m.invoke is never reached. I've checked, and methodParams gives the same classes as searchParams. The code below works, and picks the right method, but it seems like a very dirty way of doing things, I'm sure I'm missing something obvious. • Qt: How to use QTimer to print a message to a QTextBrowser every 10 seconds?

  Hello, I have working at this for hours and cannot figure it out nor can I find any help online that works. Basically the gist of what I am trying to accomplish is to have a Qt GUI with a button and a QTextBrowser. When I push the button I want it to diplay a message and then keep printing this message every 10 seconds. I figured I would use QTimer because it makes sense to have a timer to diplay the message every 10 seconds. When I originally implemented this into my buttonClicked() SLOT it caused the program to freeze. I looked online for a solution and found QApplication::processEvents(). So basically in my function I had something like this: while(1) { QTimer *timer; connect(...) //omitted parameters for this example timer.start(10000); ui->diplay->append("Message"); while(timer.isActive()) { QApplication::processEvents() } } I figured it would break out of the timer.isActive() while loop but it won't it simply stays in there. So I figured this is a threading issue. So I figured out how to use QThreads but I still can't get it to work. Basically when I create a thread with a timer on it and the thread tells the timer to start, the program closes and the console says "The program has unexpectedly finished". There has to be an easy way to do this but my track record with Qt has always been that th

• User submitted content filtering

  Hey all, Does anyone have any ideas on what could be used as a way to filter untrustworthy user submitted content? Take Yelp for instance, they would need to prevent competitors writing business reviews on their competitors. They would need to prevent business owners favourably reviewing their own business, or forcing friends/family to do so. They would need to prevent poor quality reviews from affecting a businesses rating and so on. I can't think what they might use to do this: Prevent multiple users from the same IP reviewing certain things Prevent business owners reviewing their own business (maybe even other businesses in the same categories as their own?) Somehow determine what a review is about and what the actual intentions behind it are Other than the first and second points, I can't think of any clever/easy way to filter potentially harmful reviews from being made available, other than a human doing it. Obviously for a site the size of Yelp this wouldn't be feasible, so what parameters could they take into consideration? Even with human intervention, how would anyone know it was the owners best buddy writing a fake review without knowing the people? I'm using this as an example in a larger study on the subject of filtering user content automatically. Does anyone have any ideas how these systems may work and what they take into consideration? • Major JQuery bug on IE not reproducible - What can i do in this situation to solve this bug?

  I am hoping to get some help on this issue. Some users on IE have been reporting this javascript issue, but I have been unable to re-produce it. In essence, for some class of windows IE users, the game doesn't work (or $.ajax() is not working). What I know: I swapped out an ajax call (ajax_init_trainer) and used a standard link with some request parameters to do the initialization and ppl seemed to get passed the problem until they hit the next ajax call. I read somewhere that IE does crazy caching so you need to make the urls unique, which is why i added the _requestno parameter. However, setting the cache:false is said to also do this.
