• Working with sets of rows in (My)SQL and comparing values

  Hello, I am trying to figure out the SQL for doing some relatively simple operations on sets of records in a table but I am stuck. Consider a table with multiple rows per item, all identified by a common key. For example: serial model color XX1 A blue XX2 A blue XX3 A green XX5 B red XX6 B blue XX1 B blue What I would for example want to do is: Assuming that all model A rows must have the same color, find the rows which dont. (for example, XX3 is green). Assuming that a given serial number can only point to a single type of model, find out the rows which that does not occur (for example XX1 points both to A and B) These are all simple logically things to do. To abstract it, I want to know how to group things by using a single key (or combination of keys) and then compare the values of those records. Should I use a join on the same table? should i use some sort of array or similar? thanks for your help

  Hello, First of all sorry that I could not think of a more descriptive title. What I want to do is the following using only SQL: I have some lists of strings, list1, list2 and list3. I have a dataset that contains two interesting columns, A and B. Column A contains a TransactionID and column B contains an ItemID. Naturally, there can be multiple rows that share the same TransactionIDs. I need to catch those transactions that have at least one item ID that exists whithin each list (list1, list2 AND list3). I also need to count how many times does that happen for each transaction. I hope that makes enough sense, perhaps I will be able to explain it better with a clear head. Thanks in advance

• Inserting timestamp value in SQL Server

  I am trying to copy data from my MYSQL table to SQL Server using PHP. I have a TimeStamp value that needs to be copied. While I am trying to copy the fields, it gave an error that timestamp value cannot be inserted. Is there any way to insert the timestamp value? Is it is not possible, then declaring the column as nvarchar will insert the timestamp, but will I be able to search the data in a date range? Can anyone please clarify my doubt? Thanks.

I thought at one point I could create a Select Statement to build my custom data and use that as the datasource for my Insert Into statement. i.e. something like INSERT INTO MyCustomData (ColumnKey, Column1, Column2) From (Select Top 50000 Row_Count(), 'Custom Data 1', 'Custom Data 2') I know this doesn't work, but its the only thing I can show that seems to provide an example of what I'm after. • File folder sql programming

  I'm trying to figure out the best way to make a file folder system in sql. I'm making a website that will be using similar system as explorer in windows. You open your c: drive and you see there some folders and files, and you open one folder and you see more files and folders there. So what i'm asking, would i use one table for this and just point to the parent id number or what ? I have this in my head.. You make a Primary folder, it gets the u_id=1. Then i make a file in that folder, it gets u_id=2 and p_id=1 so i know its there right? same with the folders. This would all be in one table but i cant help thinking there is some major flaw in this..

• Put empty spaces in an SQL select

  I'm having difficulty creating a month-count select query in SQL. Basically, I have a list of entries, all of which have a date associated with them. What I want the end result to be, is a list containing 12 rows (one for each month), and each row would contain the month number (1 for January, 2 for February, etc), and a count of how many entries had that month set as it's date. Something like this: Month - Count 1 - 12 2 - 0 3 - 7 4 - 0 5 - 9 6 - 0 I can get an result containing months that have a count of higher than 0, but if the month contains no entries, the row isn't created. I get this result just by doing SELECT Month(goalDate) as monthNumber, count(*) as monthCount FROM goalsList WHERE Year(goalDate) = 2012 GROUP BY Month(goalDate) ORDER BY monthNumber Thanks in advance for the help!

  I am trying to display my events from a MySQL database. I'm using the events function. My XML file being returned is pretty basic. I've looked at all of the FullCalendar questions and most of them talk about JSON and point to the documentation for JSON. I can't use JSON. I have to go XML. Can you tell me where I'm off. Here is a sample of what my xml looks like: Grow Your Business on the Web 2010-06-05T9:30 2010-06-05T12:30 O The whole file is prefaced with a tag and closed with a tag.   Hi I need to find 1.mismatch(incorrectly played notes), 2.insertion(additional played), & 3.deletion (missed notes), in a music piece (e.g. note pitches [string values] stored in a table) against a reference music piece. This is either possible through exact string matching algorithms or dynamic programming/ approximate string matching algos. However I realised that approximate string matching is more appropriate for my problem due to identifying mismatch, insertion, deletion of notes. Or an extended version of Boyer-moore to support approx. string matching. Is there any link for sample java code I can try out approximate string matching? I find complex explanations and equations - but I hope I could do well with some sample code and simple explanations. Or can I find any sample java code on boyer-moore extended for approx. string matching? I understand the boyer-moore concept, but having troubles with adjusting it to support approx. string matching (i.e. to support mismatch, insertion, deletion). Also what is the most efficient approx. string matching algorithm (like boyer-moore in exact string matching algo)? Greatly appreciate any insight/ suggestions. Many thanks in advance

  The real-world situation is a series of events that each have two or more participants (like sports teams, though there can be more than two in an event), only one of which is the host of the event. There is an Event db table for each unique event and a Participant db table with unique participants. They are joined together using a Matchup table. They look like this: Event EventID (PK) (other event data like the date, etc.) Participant ParticipantID (PK) Name Matchup EventID (FK to Event table) ParicipantID (FK to Participant) Host (1 or 0, only 1 host = 1 per EventID) What I'd like to get as a result is something like this: EventID ParticipantID where host = 1 Participant.Name where host = 1 ParticipantID where host = 0 Participant.Name where host = 0 ParticipantID where host = 0 Participant.Name where host = 0 ... Where one event has 2 participants and another has 3 participants, for example, the third participant column data would be null or otherwise noticeable, something like (PID = ParticipantID): EventID PID-1(host) Name-1 (host) PID-2 Name-2 PID-3 Name-3 ------- ----------- ------------- ----- ------ ----- ------ 1 7 Lions 8 Tigers 12 Bears 2 11 Dogs 9 Cats NULL NULL I suspect the answer is reasonably straightforward but for some reason I'm not wrapping my head around it. Alternately it's very difficult. :) I'm using MYSQL 5 if that affects the available SQL.

• Updates to fullcalendar events (through updateEvent) not maintaining across ajax month changes

  Hey there. I have the calendar configured to allow me to edit and add (drag/drop) calendar events. I use .fullCalendar('updateEvent', theEvent) to edit an event, and it immediately updates on the page. Excellent. If I move to another month and then move back (get via ajax), that change is undone. By contrast, if I add a new event by drag/drop using: .fullCalendar('renderEvent', newEventObject, true); it appears on the calendar, and if I move to another month, and move back, it maintains. If I edit this newly added event object, and move to another month and back, the updates are retained! So the "stickiness" of edits seem to work on newly added events, but not events that were pulled via ajax (since it just pulls a fresh version via ajax when the month changes). My calendar config is: $('#calendar').fullCalendar({ theme: true, header: { left: "prev,next today", center: 'title', right: "today prev,next" }, selectable: true, selectHelper: true, select: calendarSelect, droppable: true, drop: calendarDrop, events:getCalendarData, eventClick:calendarEventClicked }); I tried setting editable: true, as well, but no dice. I noticed that if I view "event.source" on one of the ajax pulled events, it shows me a function, and if i read the source attribute on one of the "added" events, it reads [object]. So I tried setting the event.source of the event being added, to that same event object: curCalendarEvent.source = curCalendarEvent But no dice. It sets, but when I move back month forward again, it returns to the function as a source. I tried adding lazyFetching: false to my calendar config, but that didn't help. I even tried a .fullCalendar('renderEvent', curCalendarEvent, true); on the existing "edited" event to see if I could get "stick" to work, and it didn't help. The only thing I can think of doing is deleting the event flat out and recreating it. Any help would be appreciated. -Brian

  I received some great help on joining a table to itself and am trying to take it to the next level. The SQL below is from the help but with my addition of the select line beginning with COUNT, the inner join to the Recipient table, and the Group By. SELECT Event.EventID AS EventID, Event.EventDate AS EventDateUTC, Participant2.ParticipantID AS AwayID, Participant1.ParticipantID AS HostID, COUNT(Recipient.ChallengeID) AS AllChallenges FROM Event INNER JOIN Matchup Matchup1 ON (Event.EventID = Matchup1.EventID) INNER JOIN Matchup Matchup2 ON (Event.EventID = Matchup2.EventID) INNER JOIN Participant Participant1 ON (Matchup1.Host = 1 AND Matchup1.ParticipantID = Participant1.ParticipantID) INNER JOIN Participant Participant2 ON (Matchup2.Host != 1 AND Matchup2.ParticipantID = Participant2.ParticipantID) INNER JOIN Recipient ON (Event.EventID = Recipient.EventID) WHERE Event.CategoryID = 1 AND Event.Resolved = 0 AND Event.Type = 1 GROUP BY Recipient.ChallengeID ORDER BY EventDateUTC ASC My goal is to get a count of how many rows in the Recipient table match the EventID in Event. This code works fine except that I also want to get results where there are 0 matching rows in Recipient. I want 15 rows (= the number of events) but I get 2 rows, one with a count of 1 and one with a count of 2 (which is appropriate for an inner join as there are 3 rows in the sample Recipient table, one for one EventID and two for another EventID). I thought that either a LEFT join or an OUTER join was what I was looking for, but I know that I'm not quite getting how the tables are actually joined. A LEFT join there gives me one more row with 0, which happens to be EventID 1 (first thing in the table), but that's all. Errors advise me that I can't just change that INNER join to an OUTER. I tried some parenthesizing and some subselects and such but can't seem to make it work.

• Raising C# events with an extension method - is it bad?

  We're all familiar with the horror that is C# event declaration. To ensure thread-safety, the standard is to write something like this: public event EventHandler SomethingHappened; protected virtual void OnSomethingHappened(EventArgs e) { var handler = SomethingHappened; if (handler != null) handler(this, e); } Recently in some other question on this board (which I can't find now), someone pointed out that extension methods could be used nicely in this scenario. Here's one way to do it: static public class EventExtensions { static public void RaiseEvent(this EventHandler @event, object sender, EventArgs e) { var handler = @event; if (handler != null) handler(sender, e); } static public void RaiseEvent<T>(this EventHandler<T> @event, object sender, T e) where T : EventArgs { var handler = @event; if (handler != null) handler(sender, e); } } With these extension methods in place, all you need to declare and raise an event is something like this: public event EventHandler SomethingHappened; void SomeMethod() { this.SomethingHappened.RaiseEvent(this, EventArgs.Empty); } My question: Is this a good idea? Are we missing anything by not having the standard On method? (One thing I notice is that it doesn't work with events that have explicit add/remove code.)

• Possible to capture all events in a web browser?

  I am working on a pet project and am at the research stage. Quick summary I am trying to intercept all form submits, onclick, and every single keydown. My library of choice is either jquery, or jquery + prototypejs. I figure I can batch up the events into a queue/stack and send it back to the server in time interval batches to keep performance relatively stable. Concerns Form submits and change's would be relatively simple.. Something like $("form :inputs").bind("change", function() { ... record event... }); But how to ensure I get precedence over the applications handlers as I have a habit of putting return false on a lot of my form handlers when there is a validation issue. As I understand it, that effectively stops the event in its tracks. My project For my smaller remote clients I will put their products onto a VPS or run it in my home data center. Currently I use a basic authentication system, given a username/password they see the website and then hopefully send me somewhat sane notes on what is broken or should be tweaked. As a better solution, I've written a simple proxy web server that does the above but allows me to have one DNS entry and then depending on credentials it makes an internal request relaying headers and re-writing URLS as needed. Every single html/text or application/* request is compressed and shoved into a sqlite table so I can partially replay what they've done. Now I am shifting to the frontend and would like to capture clicks, keydown's, and submits on everything on the page.

• C#. Saving information about events and event handlers and removing handlers using this information

  I have an object which is creating several event handlers using lambda expressions, and I need to remove all handlers created in that object in one time. I'm trying to create some unified static object which will 'know' which handler relates to which object and event if event handler was created through this static object. • Extended slice that goes to beginning of sequence with negative stride

  Bear with me while I explain my question. Skip down to the bold heading if you already understand extended slice list indexing. In python, you can index lists using slice notation. Here's an example: >>> A = list(range(10)) >>> A[0:5] [0, 1, 2, 3, 4] You can also include a stride, which acts like a "step": >>> A[0:5:2] [0, 2, 4] The stride is also allowed to be negative, meaning the elements are retrieved in reverse order: >>> A[5:0:-1] [5, 4, 3, 2, 1] But wait! I wanted to see [4, 3, 2, 1, 0]. Oh, I see, I need to decrement the start and end indices: >>> A[4:-1:-1] [] What happened? It's interpreting -1 as being at the end of the array, not the beginning. I know you can achieve this as follows: >>> A[4::-1] [4, 3, 2, 1, 0] But you can't use this in all cases. For example, in a method that's been passed indices. My question is: Is there any good pythonic way of using extended slices with negative strides and explicit start and end indices that include the first element of a sequence? This is what I've come up with so far, but it seems unsatisfying. >>> A[0:5][::-1] [4, 3, 2, 1, 0]

• When my object is no longer referenced why do its events continue to run?

  Say I am making a game and have a base Buff class. I may also have a subclass named ThornsBuff which subscribes to the Player class's Damaged event. The Player may have a list of Buffs and one of them may be the ThornsBuff. For example: Test Class Player player = new Player(); player.ActiveBuffs.Add(new ThornsBuff(player)); ThornsBuff Class public ThornsBuff(Player player) { player.DamageTaken += player_DamageTaken; } private void player_DamageTaken(MessagePlayerDamaged m) { m.Assailant.Stats.Health -= (int)(m.DamageAmount * .25); } This is all to illustrate an example. If I were to remove the buff from the list, the event is not detached. Even though the player no longer has the buff, the event is still executed as if he did. Now, I could have a Dispel method to unregister the event, but that forces the developer to call Dispel in addition to removing the Buff from the list. What if they forget, increased coupling, etc. What I don't understand is why the event doesn't detatch itself automatically when the Buff is removed from the list. The Buff only existed in the list and that is its one reference. After it is removed shouldn't the event be detached? I tried adding the detaching code to the finalizer of the Buff but that didn't fix it either. The event is still running even after it has 0 references. I suppose it is because the garbage collector had not run yet? Is there any way to make it automatic and instant so that when the object has no references all its events are unregisted? Thanks.

• How to trigger a SQL Agent Job from a client PC

  I have SQL Agent job that is automated that a non SQL Admin user may need to occasionaly run. I know I can trigger a SQL Agent Job via sp_execute_job. Can anyone tell me where to find what I need installed on a (Non SQL Server box) client PC in order to run one of - SQLCmd, OSQL or ISQL - commands please, so I can execute the above SQL? Or is there are simpler way perhaps with out calling TSQL or without installing any SQL client tools.
