  • Java web app, with plugin framework and ability to connect to source for updates

    I've searched all around for some good sources, but either have been searching for the wrong keywords, or I'm just missing something. I'm looking to redevelop a web app I've been using for some time now. Many parts are out of date, and we're constantly throwing in little hacks to attempt to give it new life. So what I'd like to do is re-engineer it from the ground up, built on some sort of plug-in framework. Before I continue, I'm more or less an intermediate Java programmer. In some ways, I'm hoping to use this project as a big learning experience. I've read a lot about OSGi, and it seems that's the most complete framework. Ideally, I would like an end result web app which I can run one instance as my hosting environment, and other instances can connect to it to grab new and updated plug-ins. Eventually I'll want to lock down these plug-ins based on some undecided criteria of who can get them (basically some will simply be updates, others will provide new functionality and should be "purchased" through an external system). But that will probably be handled in a later phase. There should be an administration view for managing bundles in a hot environment (looking to avoid having to restart the server for an update). I know all these things are possible, I'm just trying to find some good resources for reference. All the OSGi tutorials I'm finding seem to be too simplistic. If anyone here can guide me in the right direction on any or all of the items I'm looking for, it would be much appreciated.   • Flash Player Plugin on Firefox will not update on Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit

    I am running on Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit, and my flash player plug-in for Firefox is outdated. I must update my plug-in to flash player 11, but I am not able. I have already installed Adobe Flash Player via Ubuntu Software center (As it prompted me to after trying to download from the Adobe site) Without the plug-in updated, videos can not be played from directly on a Facebook page, and I believe that it distorts the video player on Youtube.   • Will unity stop being a plugin for Compiz?

    I ask this as with the Unity Desktop running , when I try any games with my Ubuntu 12.04.1 I get so much frame rate drop with Unity and Compiz. If I switch to Gnome-Classic which uses mutter, I get a vast boost in performance. My system is an 8 core AMD with a Nvidia 460 SE that can play anything I chuck at it in Windows and I'm using the latest Nvidia drivers, but even simple games like the humble bundle gets serious lag with Unity and the only cause of this can be compiz (what I can guess). When Steam come to Ubuntu, how will this performance loss be addressed?

  • Rosegarden plugin list is empty

    I've just installed rosegarden through apt. I've also installed jack and a low latency kernel through a PPA https://launchpad.net/~abogani/+archive/ppa. I've started jack-server and through the control panel I can see its wiring things through rosegarden. I've also tried installing qsynth and dssi both through apt. However I can't see any plug ins in the synth plug-in list. Therefore I'm unable to test if this works. I've tried launching qsynth before rosegarden and I've tried a few things however I just can't see any plugins. Does anyone know how to get this to work?   • Am I crazy? Demos on jQuery's 'effects' page not working in any browser

    Hi all, I want to make sure I'm not crazy, because I can't get any of the effects demos to work on jQuery's demo pages. I thought it might be my new Firebug version (1.5.2) or Firefox in general, but they're not working in IE or Chrome either. Here are the links where the demos aren't working. One is for highlight, and the other is for explode. Incidentally, highlight is the one that I'm trying to use. Could it be the new jQuery UI version? Is anyone else having these not work?     I was a bit of a late-comer to the JQuery party, but now I've been using it for a while it's given me a host of options for adding extra flair to the client side of my applications. Here's a few generic JQuery functions I've written which can be used to add some neat little features to a page. Just call any of them from a document ready function. Apply JQuery Themeroller Styles to all Page Buttons   The JQuery Themeroller is a great tool for creating a theme for a site based on colours and styles for particular page elements. The JQuery.UI library then provides a set of functions which allow you to apply styles to page elements. This function applies a JQuery Themeroller style to all the buttons on a page - as well as any elements which have a button class applied to them - and then makes the mouse pointer turn into a cursor when you mouse over them: function addCursorPointerToButtons() {     $("button, input[type='submit'], input[type='button'], .button") .button().css("cursor", "pointer"); } Automatically Remove the Default Value from a Select Box   Required drop-down select boxes often have a default option which reads 'Please select...' (or something like that), but once someone has selected a value, there's no need to retain that.   • SpringMvc java.lang.NullPointerException When Posting Form To Server [closed]

    I have a form with a user name field on it when i tab out of the field i use a RESTFUL Web Service that makes a call to a handler method in the controller. The method makes a call to a DAO class that checks the database if the user name exists. This works fine, however when the form is posted to the server i call the same exact function i would call in the handler method however i get a java.lang.NullPointerException when it accesses the class that makes a call to the DAO object. So it does not even access the DAO object the second time. I have exception handlers around the calls in all my classes that makes calls. Any ideas as to whats happening here why i would get the java.lang.NullPointerException the second time the function is called.Does this have anything to do with Spring instantiating DAO classes using a Singleton method or something to that effect? What can be done to resolve this?   • Using Telerik MVC with your own custom jQuery and or other plug-ins

    If you are using MVC it might be worth checking out the telerik controls (http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-mvc), they are free if you are doing an internal or “not for profit” application. If however you do choose to use them, you could come up against a little problem I had.  Using the telerik controls with your own custom jQuery.  In my case I was using the jQuery UI dialog. It kept throwing an error where I was setting my div to a dialog. Code Snippet $("#textdialog").dialog({ The problem is when you use the telerik mvc stuff you need to call ScriptRegistrar Code Snippet @Html.Telerik().ScriptRegistrar() in order to setup the javascript for the controls. By default this adds a reference to jQuery and if you have already added a reference to jQuery because you are using it elsewhere, this causes a problem. I found the solution here And it was to change the above ScriptRegistrar call to this… Code Snippet @Html.Telerik().ScriptRegistrar().jQuery(false).DefaultGroup(g => g.Combined(true).Compress(true));   If you come across this one on stackoverflow it wont work – in my case the HtmlEditor would render no problem, but was unusable.  Which is the same as someone else found when using the tab control – they went to the bother of re-writing the ScriptRegistrar.  Not for me that one!!

    I am new to web development and trying to study various types of websites as case study. Right now my focus is on how search engines works for an eCommerce website. I know basic functioning for a search engine, i.e. crawl web pages, index them and the display the results using those indexes. But I got little confuse in case of an eCommerce website. Don't you think that it would be better if a search engine instead of crawling the web pages containing products, it should directly crawl the database and index the products stored in the database? And when a user search for any product, it will simply give us the rows of the table which matches the user query? If this is not the case, can someone please explain how the usual method works on eCommerce website?

  • Simple form validation

    Hi, I have a site with a simple contact form using ASP for customers to e-mail quote requests. However, I'm getting quite a few messages through with no contact information; I think people assume that their e-mail address is coming through automatically. I'd like a simple way to make the e-mail and/or telephone number fields required, preferably so that the fields are highlighted as such if they're submitted without anything in them. I've Googled for this but they seem either too simple, diverting people to a separate page and requiring a 'back click', or incredibly complicated with massive reams of code. Any suggestions?

    Not sure why. I grabbed the code from: http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like/ And as stated there, we can read: "href - the URL to like. The XFBML version defaults to the current page.
