  • document.getElementById in toString

    - by KooiInc
edit Found my answers here. Bottom line: toString/valueOf can only return primitive types. So here the lack of native getters in javascript shows, I suppose. I would like to use the following simple function in an elementwrapper: function ElGetter(id){ var id = id; return { set: function(nwid){id = nwid;}, toString: function(){return document.getElementById(id);}, valueOf: function(){return document.getElementById(id);} }; } var myEl = ElGetter('myId'); console.log(myEl.innerHTML); //=> undefined But I can't get it to work. Is it a DOM/javascript restriction or am I missing something? Normally it works, as in: function Tester(){ var x = 1; return { toString: function(){return x}, valueOf: function(){return x} } } var myTest = Tester(); console.log(myTest); //=> 1

  • Can't get values from Sqlite DB using query

    - by Sana Joseph
I used sqlite to populate a DB with some Tables in it. I made a function at another javascript page that executes the database & selects some values from the table. Javascript: function GetSubjectsFromDB() { tx.executeSql('SELECT * FROM Subjects', [], queryNSuccess, errorCB); } function queryNSuccess(tx, results) { alert("Query Success"); console.log("Returned rows = " + results.rows.length); if (!results.rowsAffected) { console.log('No rows affected!'); return false; } console.log("Last inserted row ID = " + results.insertId); } function errorCB(err) { alert("Error processing SQL: "+err.code); } Is there some problem with this line ? tx.executeSql('SELECT * FROM Subjects', [], queryNSuccess, errorCB); The queryNSuccess isn't called, neither is the errorCB so I don't know what's wrong.

  • Animate rotating SVG element on webpage

    - by Zarkonnen
So I have an SVG file created in Inkscape embedded in a webpage, and I'd like it to rotate slowly. I've tried using Javascript and inserting animation commands directly into the SVG, but nothing works. I don't want to load in an entire JS library for this one task. This is what I have so far: <html> <body bgcolor="#333333"> <embed src="gear.svg" id="gear" width="1000" height="1000" style="position: absolute; top: -500px; left: -500px;" /> <script type="text/javascript"> var gear = document.getElementById("gear"); window.setInterval(function() { // Somehow animate the gear. }, 10); </script> </body> </html>

  • Problem Passing Variable to Submit Form in Firefox

    - by George
In the following example, I have a link that sends a variable to a function which checks if the variable is true and, if so, submits a form on the page. This has been tested and works in IE, Safari, and Chrome, but not Firefox. Trying to figure out what's wrong in Firefox. The function which checks 'action' and then submits form 'login' : function submit(action) { if (action == "submit") { document.login.submit(); } } Link to pass action variable and submit form: <a href="javascript:submit('submit');">SEND FORM</a> When I remove the check and just have the following, it works fine in Firefox: function submit() { document.login.submit(); } <a href="javascript:submit();">SEND FORM</a>

  • Using PUT/POST/DELETE with JSONP and jQuery

    - by ryanzec
I am working on creating a RESTful API that supports cross-domain requests, JSON/JSONP support, and the main HTTP method (PUT/GET/POST/DELETE). Now while will be easy to accessing this API through server side code , it would nice to exposed it to javascript. From what I can tell, when doing a JSONP requests with jQuery, it only supports the GET method. Is there a way to do a JSONP request using POST/PUT/DELETE? Ideally I would like a way to do this from within jQuery (through a plugin if the core does not support this), but I will take a plain javascript solution too. Any links to working code or how to code it would be helpful, thanks.

  • Sending JSON(jQuery) to PHP and decoding it

    - by dscher
I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong. It seems like it should be simple because I can't find anyone else with this issue but I can't figure out to send basic data via javascript(jQuery) to PHP and decode it. For the sake of simplicity, this is what I have: JAVASCRIPT var json_data = { "name" : "john doe" }; $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "../bin/process.php", dataType: "json", data: json_data }); and my PHP FILE $arr = json_decode("json_data", true); $fp = fopen('data.txt', "w"); fwrite($fp, $arr['name']); fclose($fp); The file I'm writing ends up with nothing in it. If I do an: fwrite($fp, 'test'); I get a file with the word test in it but no matter what I do I don't get the json data I sent. Can someone please share a thorough example of A to Z. Thanks for any help.

  • shipping and handling fee calculation

    - by Newb
Here is the question: Many companies normally charge a shipping and handling fee for purchases. Create a Web page that allows a user to enter a purchase price into a text box - include a JavaScript function that calculates shipping and handling. Add functionality to the script that adds a minimum shipping and handling fee of $1.50 for any purchase that is less than or equal to $25.00. For any orders over $25.00, add 10% to the total purchase price for shipping and handling, but do not include the $1.50 minimum shipping and handling fee. After you determine the total cost of the order (purchase plus shipping and handling), display it in an alert dialog box. I am beginner at JavaScript and struggling to get my code to work. It does display an alert box with the value entered by the user but doesn't add anything. Although, I don't know why the formula doesn't work. Please help. <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <title>Calculating Shipping & Handling</title> <script type="text/javascript"> /* <![CDATA[ */ var price=[]; var shipping=[]; var total=price+shipping; function calculateShipping(){ if (price <= 25){ shipping = (price + 1.5); } else { shipping = (price * 10 / 100); } window.alert("The purchase price with shipping is " + document.calculate.ent.value); } /* ]]> */ </script> </head> <body> <form name ="calculate" action="" > <p>Enter Purchase Price</p> <input type="text" name="ent" > <input type="button" name="button" value="Submit" onClick="calculateShipping()" /> </form> </body> </html>

  • Rails: How to toggle a boolean field from a view?

    - by sscirrus
Very simple question. I have a boolean field called "saved" in my database. I want to toggle this field by clicking on a text link that changes from "Save" to "Unsave" depending on the situation, and updates my "Customer" table with 0 or 1. I imagine Javascript may be a way to go for this but I am not experienced enough (yet!) in Javascript to know how to code it. What is the best way to approach this problem, and how can I find the code I would need to drop into my view to make this toggle work? Thank you very much.

  • ASP.NET MVC submitting json array to controller as regular post request (nonajax)

    - by j3ko
All the examples of json I can find online only show how to submit json arrays w/ the jquery command $.ajax(). I'm submitting some data from a custom user control as a json array. I was wondering if it's possible to submit a json array as a regular post request to the server (like a normal form) so the browser renders the page returned. Controller: [JsonFilter(Param = "record", JsonDataType = typeof(TitleViewModel))] public ActionResult SaveTitle(TitleViewModel record) { // save the title. return RedirectToAction("Index", new { titleId = tid }); } Javascript: function SaveTitle() { var titledata = GetData(); $.ajax({ url: "/Listing/SaveTitle", type: "POST", data: titledata, contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", }); } Which is called from a save button. Everything works fine but the browser stays on the page after submitting. I was thinking of returning some kind of custom xml from the server and do javascript redirect but it seems like a very hacky way of doing things. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • What can cause a persistent "Reload the page to get source for" error in firebug?

    - by ripper234
I'm trying to debug the javascript of a specific page, and I keep seeing Reload the page to get source for page.htm in Firebug. On Chrome, I'm mostly able to debug the js, but sometimes I also get a blank page. What can cause such issues? I believe I always see a blank page in Chrome if I reload while the JS console is open. If I open a new Chrome tab, load the page, and then open the JS console, everything is ok. The page I'm debugging is on a localhost server (Play Framework server), although I have seen this on other pages occasionally. This only happens with inline javascript ... js that is linked from the page is displayed fine.

  • Lifetime of javacript variables.

    - by The Machine
What is the lifetime of a variable in javascript, declared with "var". I am sure, it is definitely not according to expectation. <script> function(){ var a; var fun=function(){ // a is accessed and modified } }(); </script> Here how and when does javascript garbage collect the variable a? Since 'a' is a part of the closure of the inner function, it ideally should never get garbage collected, since the inner function 'fun', may be passed as a reference to an external context. So 'fun' should still be able to access 'a', from the external context. If my understanding is correct, how does garbage collection happen then, and how does it ensure to have enough memory space, since keeping all variables in memory until the execution of the program might not be tenable ?

  • Making a Link Appear if a Condition is Met

    - by John
    Hello, The PHP code below echoes a link if the "loginid" of the logged-in user is on a list determined by getEditorList();. It works fairly well, but I think it might work better if I were to do it with Javascript instead. How could I accomplish the same thing with Javascript? Thanks in advance, John $editors = getEditorsList(); foreach($editors as $editor) { $editorids[] = $editor['loginid']; } if(in_array($_SESSION['loginid'], $editorids)) { echo "<div class='footervote'><a href='http://www...com/.../footervote.php'>Vote</a></div>"; } Login function: <?php if (!isLoggedIn()) { if (isset($_POST['cmdlogin'])) { if (checkLogin($_POST['username'], $_POST['password'])) { show_userbox(); } else { echo "Incorrect Login information !"; show_loginform(); } } else { show_loginform(); } } else { show_userbox(); } ?>

  • How can you logically group HTML elements without taking the help of CSS classes ?

    - by Perpetualcoder
I know that in jQuery you can use something like $(".cssClass") to get all elements with this class. However in plain html and javascript how do you group elements logically? For example: <input id="fee1" data-id="1" data-group="Fees" type="text" value="$15.00"/> <input id="fee2" data-id="2" data-group="Fees" type="text" value="$25.00"/> <input id="fee3" data-id="3" data-group="Fees" type="text" value="$35.00"/> I want to create a javascript function like this: function GetByDataGroup(dataGroup){ /* returns something like [[1,"$15.00"],[2,"$25.00"],[3,"$35.00"]]*/ } EDIT : Due to some political reasons I cant use jQuery or any framework..i know it doesnt make sense :)

  • alternatives to eval for running remote code.

    - by Raynos
Are there any alternatives to using eval to immediatly run remote & trusted javascript code. function load(filePath) { var o = $.ajax({ url: filePath, dataType: 'html', async: false }); eval(o.responseText); } load("somePath"); // run a function that relies on the code from o.responseText being loaded doSomethingWithCode(); I'm aware that synchronous loading of javascript is adviced againts. But if there is no choice are there any cross browser alternatives for the use of eval above. [Edit] To clarify in more detail the code being loaded is a self executing function. Which needs to execute before doSomethingWidthCode. It's also being loaded from the server on the same domain hence its trusted.

  • What garbage collection algorithms do all 5 major browsers use?

    - by Martin Wittemann
I am currently rethinking the object dispose handling of the qooxdoo JavaScript framework. Have a look at the following diagram (A is currently in scope): Let's say we want to delete B. Generally, we cut all reference between all objects. This means we cut connection 1 to 5 in the example. Is this really necessary? As far as I have read hear 1, browsers use the mark-and-sweep algorithm. In that case, we just need to cut reference 1 (connection to the scope) and 5 (connection to the DOM) which could be much faster. But can I be sure that all browsers use the mark-and-sweep algorithm or something similar? 1 http://stackoverflow.com/questions/864516/what-is-javascript-garbage-collection

  • W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0, which technology could I use?

    - by vtortola
Hi, I've a project where one of the requirements is fullfil the "W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 (WCAG 1.0)". I'm now considering wich technology could I use to acomplish it, but I'm a little bit confused. Silverlight would be the easiest way, but I cannot find conclusive information about if silverlight is or isn't compilant. I've seen controls pack done in javascript that looks very nice, like DHTMLX, but again the same problem, I don't know for sure. Besides, I've always read that a website should work wihthout javascript, and use it just for improve the user experience. Thanks.

  • Why does jQuery do this in its constructor function implementation?

    - by mattcodes
If we look at the latest jQuery source at http://code.jquery.com/jquery-latest.js we see the following: var jQuery = function( selector, context ) { // The jQuery object is actually just the init constructor 'enhanced' return new jQuery.fn.init( selector, context ); } My understanding of the new keyword in Javascript is essentially JavaScript passes the function an empty object {} and the function sets stuff on it via this.blah. Also from my understanding new differs from .call/.apply etc.. in that the return object also has the prototype set to that of the function. So the return value should have a prototype that the same as jQuery.prototype.init.prototype (or jQuery.fn.init.prototype). However from what I see its prototype is set to jQuery.prototype thus all the commands available to work on the set. Why is this? What am I missing in my understanding?

  • Why is Window.open()'s return type void ?

    - by Salvin Francis
Doing something like this is perfectly permissible in javascript: var newWindow = window.open(...) However, this does not work in the senario of GWT (I am using 1.5 I dont know about later versions), Window window = Window.open("", "", ""); Throws me a compile time error that the open is a method with a return type as void. Why should it be void ? What if i want to close my popup from the main Window ? how do I get its handle ? I will have to resort to native javascript no doubt but i was just curious so as to why this is so...
