  • Exploring search options for PHP

    I have innoDB table using numerous foreign keys, but we just want to look up some basic info out of it. I've done some research but still lost. 1) How can I tell if my host has Sphinx installed already? I don't see it as an option for table storage method (i.e. innodb, myisam). 2) Zend_Search_Lucene, responsive enough for AJAX functionality of millions of records? 3) Mirror my innoDB with a myisam? Make every innodb transaction end with a write to the myisam, then use 1:1 lookups? How would I do this automagically? This should make MyISAM ACID-compliant and free(er) from corruption no? 4) PostgreSQL fulltext queries don't even look like SQL to me wtf, I don't have time to learn a new SQL syntax I need noob options 5) ???????????????????? This is high volume site on a decently-equipped VPS Thanks very much for any ideas.

    Let's say I have a string like: $text = "<object>item_id1a2b3</object>xxx<object>item_id4c5d6</object>" I want to convert it to: %ITEM:1a2b3xxx%ITEM:4c5d6 Here's what I've got: $text = preg_replace("/<object.*item_id([a-zA-Z0-9]+).*<\/object/","%ITEM:$1",$text); This isn't quite right, as the search is greedy.     hello I've got problem with my combobox. It's not saving the selected value in Edit page. The selected value from my combobox got saved into the DB then the page refreshed to display. When I went to edit page, to select another value, and clicked save button. On the display page, it's not saving. For example. on Create page I selected Regulatory. then I changed my mind and changed it to Mission Critical on Edit page. On display page it is not changed. I don't know what's wrong or what I'm missing here. Any help is welcome and truly appreciated. Thanks.

    I'm trying to create a "GetCurrentLevel" method that takes a point value as an input and returns what "Level" that corresponds to. I'm storing the Level = Points mapping in an array, but the array pointer is not moving logically when I use it a foreach loop. I've added echo statements for debugging.     I've been trying to find out why this 'json_encode'd string isn't parsing out correctly, and came across previously answered questions that had the UTF BOM sequence that was throwing the error, but didn't help me here.   • Basic security, PHP mySQl

    So I am making a basic log-in page. I have a good idea of what to do, but I'm still unsure of some things. I have a database full of students and a password column of course. I know I'm going to use md5 encryption in that column. The student enters their e-mail and student ID, and they get e-mailed a password if correct. But, where do I create the password? Do I have to manually add the password (which is just a randomly generated string) in mySQL to all the students? And I am suppose to send the password to the student; how will I know what to send the student if the password is encrypted? I was thinking about generating the password when the student first enters their e-mail and student ID. They get an e-mail of the random string, and at the same time, I add the same random string to the database, encrypted. Is that how it's suppose to work though? And it feels unsafe doing that all on the same page. Sorry for the long-winded, newbish question. I find this all facisnating at the same time as well (AES and RSA encryption :O)

    Good Afternoon, I am trying to assign some variables to a listing which has a main category and a subcategory. This works fine for most of the variables, however in each sub category there are some fields which are other. ie Main Category 1 has sub category database, development and other Main Category 2 has sub category email, internet and other Main Category 3 has sub category graphics and other.   • Good open source analytics/stats software in PHP?

    The url shortening service I'm building needs to display some basic click stats to users: # of clicks, conversions, referring domains, and country (filterable by a date range). I'll possibly want more advanced stats in the future. Is there existing open source software that will allow me to pass events to it and then easily display a bar or line graph of that event (for example, a line graph of "conversions" between two specified dates). It seems like something like this should exist and would be much easier then building the whole thing from scratch. I know there are graphing scripts, but that still requires me to format the data (usually as an xml file) and then pass it to the graph. I'm looking for something a bit more complete, which I can just feed the events and then it does everything else.

    MySQL stores the date in my database (by default) as 'YYYY-MM-DD' The field type for my date is 'DATE' (I do not need any time storage).. Is there a simple way to change it by default to DD/MM/YYYY ? I call up different dates in 2 different tables, and no where in any of my code do I have anything resembling a date variable or anything! Hopefully this is a straight forward change?

  • PHP registration script: verifying and telling the user what went wrong

    Hi, I'm building a registration script and I want to insert the user's input (username, mail) ONLY if it's not already in the database. What I usually do in such cases is a request to see if something's already there, something like: "SELECT * FROM things WHERE thing_name = '$treated_user_input'". I have two fields that need to be unique this time though. Is there a way to do only one SELECT request and still be able to tell the user exactly what field went wrong? Or do I have to do one request per unique field? Thanks for your answers.
