• Weird behavior when debugging ASP.NET Web application: cookie expires (1/1/0001 12:00AM) by itself on next breakpoint hit.

  I'm working on ajaxified (Telerik AJAX Manager) ASP.NET application using Visual Studio 2010 (runs with admin privileges) and IIS 7.5. Basically, everything on the page is inside update panels. As for cookies I have custom encrypted "settings" cookie which is added to Response if it's not there on session start. Application runs smoothly, problem was arising when I started the debugging it: Actions:  no breakpoints set, F5 - application has started in debug mode, browser window loaded. I login to site, click on controls, all is fine. Next I set *any* breakpoint somewhere in code, break on it then let it continue running, but once I break again (immediately after first break) and check cookie: it has expired date 1/1/0001 12:00AM and no data in value property. I was storing current language there, which was used inside Page's InitializeCulture event and obviously exception was being raised. I spent several hours trying deleting browser cache, temporary ASP.NET files etc, nothing seemed to work. Same application has been tested on exactly same environment on another PC and no problems with debugging there. After all I've found the solution: visual studio generates for every solution additional .suo file where additional settings are stored, like UI state, breakpoints info, etc, so I deleted it and loaded project again, tried debugging - everything is ok now.

• How do you convince the client their application's backend needs a rewrite?

  I have been supporting a LOB winforms application for a client the last 3 years. The application is built with a simple monolithic architecture and uses .NET 2.0. The application is a core part of their operations and its longevity is paramount. It needs to evolve with their evolving business processes, as well as implement improved functionality etc....this brings me to believe that this application needs an overhaul of sorts on the back-end. The problem is changing a back-end is "invisible"...i.e. the user never actually sees it. It's a quality of the system that is changing (stability, maintainability, reliability, longevity), not some functional requirement that will be easily seen...i.e. the ROI is not obvious. There is a lot of new functionality to be added to the front-end as well (user experience). I am considering a strategy of changing the back-end over time...i.e. when making a change or adding a feature to the front-end, change those components in the back-end that are affected, eventually you get to everything. How do I convince the client that we need to rebuild the back-end?

• How to play audio in Java Application

  I'm making a java application and I need to play audio. I'm playing mainly small sound files of my cannon firing (its a cannon shooting game) and the projectiles exploding, though I plan on having looping background music. I have found two different methods to accomplish this, but both don't work how I want. • Application stops on back button in new activity

  I have this application, that have a listView, and when I click in a item on listView, it opens a new activity. That works fine! But, if I open the new activity and than press the "back button" the application "Unfortunately, has stopped". Is there something I'm doing wrong? • EntityManager injection works in JBoss 7.1.1 but not WebSphere 7

  I've built an EJB that will manage my database access. I'm building a web app around it that uses Struts 2. The problem I'm having is when I deploy the ear, the EntityManager doesn't get injected into my service class (and winds up null and results in NullPointerExceptions). The weird thing is, it works on JBoss 7.1.1 but not on WebSphere 7. You'll notice that Struts doesn't inject the EJB, so I've got some intercepter code that does that. My current working theory right now is that the WS7 container can't inject the EntityManager because of Struts for some unknown reason. My next step is to try Spring next, but I'd really like to get this to work if possible. I've spent a few days searching and trying various things and haven't had any luck. I figured I'd give this a shot.   After having excellent response to my quiz – Why SELECT * throws an error but SELECT COUNT(*) does not?I have decided to ask another puzzling question to all of you. I am running this test on SQL Server 2008 R2. Here is the quick scenario about my setup. Create Table Insert 1000 Records Check the Statistics Now insert 10 times more 10,000 indexes Check the Statistics – it will be NOT updated Note: Auto Update Statistics and Auto Create Statistics for database is TRUE Expected Result – Statistics should be updated – SQL SERVER – When are Statistics Updated – What triggers Statistics to Update Now the question is why the statistics are not updated? The common answer is – we can update the statistics ourselves using UPDATE STATISTICS TableName WITH FULLSCAN, ALL However, the solution I am looking is where statistics should be updated automatically based on algorithm mentioned here. • Application tried to present modally an active controller ios

  I was trying to set the ViewController with a parent view controller before it shows show that it can provide call backs, I done this using PrepareForSegue - (void) prepareForSegue:(UIStoryboardSegue *)segue sender:(id)sender { if ([segue.identifier isEqualToString:@"newQuarter"]) { [segue.destinationViewController setParentViewController:self]; } } It crashed giving me the error message: Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: 'Application tried to present modally an active controller. So I tried using another method and set up a new view controller on the button touches up, - (IBAction) buttonClicked { NewViewController *newController = [[NewViewController alloc] init]; [newController setParentViewController:self]; [self presentViewController:newController animated:YES completion:nil]; } but with no luck it is still giving me the same error message, can anyone please advice? • MKMapView Memory Leak in iPhone Application

  I am working on an iPhone application which uses MKMapView and shows userlocation. I am getting memory leaks where leaked object is NSCFArray of size 128 Bytes, GeneralBlock-16, GenralBlock-8 when is set MKMapView's showUserLocation property as TRUE. If is set it as NO then i dont get this leak. Can anyone suggest that what can be the possible reason for this. Is this a bug in MKMapView class or is am I using the MKMapView incorrectly. • How to ThinApp a Database Application & SQL Server 2005

  To make it easier for potential clients to try out our software without having to go to the trouble of installing SQL Server, a test database, setting up an ODBC connection and so on, we want to package the whole thing with VMWare ThinApp. Ideally, there'd be a single executable and all the user would have to do is run it. I've been reading up on ThinApp on the VMWare website but am still unsure how to go about doing this. Is the correct approach to put SQL Server and the application in separate packages, reverting to a clean version of the virtual enviroment prior to each packaging? That seems somewhat problematic because the app needs the DBMS to run, as well as an ODBC connection. Like I said, we'd prefer to go with a single package (package = executable?), but two executables are also acceptable if an alternative can't be found. I realize that the same result can probably be achieved by way of a custom SQL Server Express installation but ThinApp looks like a better and more elegant solution.

• Can a Silverlight application authenticate versus a local LDAP/ActiveDirectory Server

  If I have an externally hosted application (www.outside.com) outside the firewall but users within a company wanted to be able to enable LDAP authentication against their local (behind the firewall) AD server (acting as LDAP) or other LDAP server (call it ldap.inside.com), how would this be done. It seems technically possible in that when a user tried to login to outside.com through a client-side silverlight interface, that the SL app could connect to the outside.com login service and be told to authenticate that user against ldap.inside.com. The SL app would make the calls to ldap.inside.com to authenticate the user. Of course, there is the issue of how the server is notified securely that the client authenticated itself...Has anyone done this?

I ran the "proxycfg -p http=127.0.0.1:8888;https=127.0.0.1:8888" on the command prompt based on http://www.fiddler2.com/fiddler/help/hookup.asp#Q-WinHTTP: How can I configure a WinHTTP application to use Fiddler? I now see the webservice wsdl requests in Fiddler but not the actual requests. Would someone know why??

  When I launch our application in Eclipse on Windows I receive the following error: Exception occured executing command line. Cannot run program .. : CreateProcess error=87, The parameter is incorrect I've solved this in the past by shortening the CLASSPATH. I've now come to a point where I can no longer shorten the CLASSPATH, and would like to know if there are any other workarounds. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830473 seems to indicate that the max command prompt line length in windows xp is 8191 characters, and the only solution is to shorten folder names, reduce depth of folder trees, using parameter files, etc.

  I am building a MVVM application. The model / entity (I am using NHibernate) is already done, and I am thinking of using AutoMapper to map between the ViewModel and Model. How have you been using Automapper in a MVVM app? Please help!

• chat application: pubsubhub vs xmpp

  I'm unsure on the best stack to build a chat application. Currently I'm thinking of two main options: facebook tornado cons: does not use the main chat protocol xmpp but pubsubhubbub pros: i really like its simplicity for development (webserver + webframework); pubsubhubbub also seems simpler as a protocol than xmpp; and i know python xmpp + bosch, punjab, ejabberd cons: don't know erlang; overall seems a bit harder to develop pros: uses xmpp protocol The chat app will need to have the following: Private messages Public rooms Private rooms Chat history for rooms (not forever, just the last n messages) html embedding url to chat room Both options seem scalable so that's not really my worry (we're thinking of running the app in amazon's ec2 as well). I know there's a project that builds a xmpp server using tornado but it's not ready for production use and our deadline isn't that big. Basically my main worry is ease of development vs somehow regretting later using pubsubhubbub to develop a chat app but I read somewhere that PubSubHubbub might eventually replace XMPP as REST replaced SOAP - so what do you think?
