  • Maintaining property lists for xCode projects

    - by William Jockusch
My project currently contains two largish property lists. One is currently 20KB; another is 8KB. So far, I have been maintaining them with xCode's property list editor. This is manageable but also a bit clunky. I am wondering if other people have better ways of doing this? So far, my lists consist of nested arrays of strings. The depth is not uniform.

  • Can a JPEG compressed image be rotated without a loss in quality?

    - by Mat
JPEG is a lossy compression scheme, so decompression-manipulation-recompression normally reduces the image quality further for each step. Is it possible to rotate a JPEG image without incurring further loss? From what little I know of the JPEG algorithm, it naively seems possible to avoid further loss with a bit of effort. Which common image manipulation programs (e.g. GIMP, Paint Shop Pro, Windows Photo Gallery) and graphic libraries cause quality loss when performing a rotation and which don't?

  • Simple way to print value of a register in x86 assembly.

    - by Bob
I need to write a program in 8086 Assembly that receives data from the user, does some mathematical calculations and prints the answer on the screen, I have written all parts of the program and all work fine but I don't know how to print the number to the screen. At the end of all my calculation the answer is AX and it is treated as an unsigned 16 bit integer. How do I print the decimal (unsigned) value of the AX register?

  • Automated incremental backups from Plesk on Centos to Amazon S3

    - by ChrisS
Hi, I've done a far bit of research on this via Google and there seems to be quite a few ways of possibly doing this. I'm looking to incrementally backup new and updated files in two directories on my Plesk run Centos 5.2 server: /backups and /var/www/vhosts (preferable only httdocs within each vhost) Has anyone got some great feedback from using the various solutions - seems to be various Java, Perl and Ruby based solutions out there. Many thanks, Chris

  • How to compile a Windows binary in Ubuntu?

    - by George Edison
I have a Qt application that I can compile in Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit and on Windows. However, I would like to avoid switching to Windows every time I want to compile the Windows version. Is there a way I can compile a Windows Qt executable in Ubuntu with mingw32 or something? Further, is there a way to integrate that compiler into Qt Creator?

  • how to scan a LAN for live hosts using PHP and SNMP?

    - by aag
I would like to have a quick script listing all active hosts in a LAN, and I am a bit lost. From other posts I figured that this can be done most effectively by polling the DHCP server (in my case a Lancom router) using SNMP. However, I am not familiar with the SNMP commands in PHP. Is snmpwalk() the correct function? Can I get snmpwalk() or any other php function to return an array that contains a list of all live hosts?

  • PHP difference between notice and warning

    - by Stegeman
When writing code errors, warnings and notices can occur. I know the idea behind errors. I suppose a warning is there to inform you about something that can cause an error, but isn't a notice exaclty the same? I suppose a notice is not a message of something doing right ;). It's just a bit confusing to me. Can anybody tell the difference between those two and the way these messages should be treated.

  • Objective-C retain counts clarification

    - by Tom
Hey, I kind of understand what's retain counts for. But not totally. I looked on google a lot to try to understand but still I don't. And now I'm in a bit of code (I'm doing iPhone development) that I think I should use them but don't know totally how. Could someone give me a quick and good example of how and why using them? Thanks!

  • Is there a better way to write this URL Manipulation in Python?

    - by dnolen
I'm curious if there's a simpler way to remove a particular parameter from a url. What I came up with is the following. This seems a bit verbose. Libraries to use or a more pythonic version appreciated. parsed = urlparse(url) if parsed.query != "": params = dict([s.split("=") for s in parsed.query.split("&")]) if params.get("page"): del params["page"] url = urlunparse((parsed.scheme, None, parsed.path, None, urlencode(params.items()), parsed.fragment,)) parsed = urlparse(url)

  • Why should Java ThreadLocal variables be static

    - by kellyfj
I was reading that JavaDoc for Threadlocal here http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/lang/ThreadLocal.html and it says "ThreadLocal instances are typically private static fields in classes that wish to associate state with a thread (e.g., a user ID or Transaction ID). " But my question is why did they choose to make it static (typically) - it makes it a bit confusing to have "per thread" state but its static?

  • How to free static member variable in C++?

    - by user299831
    Can anybody explain how to free memory of a static member Variable? In my understanding it can only be freed if all the instances of the class are destroyed. I am a little bit helpless at this point... Some Code to explain it: class ball { private: static SDL_Surface *ball_image; }; //FIXME: how to free static Variable? SDL_Surface* ball::ball_image = SDL_LoadBMP("ball.bmp");

  • How to ignore a test within the JUnit test method itself

    - by Benju
We have a number of integration tests that fail when our staging server goes down for weekly maintenance. When the staging server is down we send a specific response that I could detect in my integration tests. When I get this response instead of failing the tests I'm wondering if it is possible to skip/ignore that test even though it has started running. This would keep our test reports a bit cleaner. Does anybody have suggestions?

  • Effect of suffixes in memory operations

    - by tur1ng
In x86 GNU Assembler there are different suffixes for memory related operations. E.g.: movb, movs, movw, movl, movq, movt(?) Now my question is the following: Does the suffix has ANY effect on how the processor is getting the data out of main memory or will always be one or more 32-bit (x86) chunks loaded into the cache ? What are the effects beside the memory access?

  • Adding images to a JAR file in Eclipse?

    - by ChrisFreeley
I'm trying to make a game in java, but I'm a bit of a newb. The game has images, and when I run the application from eclipse, they all show up fine. But when I export the project as an application, the images don't show up. When I put the application in the same folder as the images, they show up when I run the application, so someone suggested that I just need to put the image files inside my JAR. Can someone tell me how? Thank you

  • Open Source projects that use agile methods or have tried them

    - by Patrick Cornelissen
I'm preparing a short talk for a conference in august and I'm looking for open source projects that are using agile methods internally or have tried them in the past. My goal is to talk about the things that work well and what won't work and promote the agile methods a little bit, because I think certain agile techniques are a good fit, but don't seem to be that common in real development. So does anyone know projects that have tried agile methods and techniques before? I'd like to contact them for a few questions.

  • unobtrusive "default" text in input WITHOUT jQuery

    - by Adam Kiss
Hello, i'm trying to write unobtrusive default/placeholder text in input (actually, relatively placed label over input, which hides on onFocus, and stays hidden if input isn't empty on onBlur), but I don't want to use jQuery, because this is the only javascript used on page - therefore using jQuery seems a bit over the top. Please, how can I do this without jQuery? Thank you.

  • No Android project type in Eclipse->File->New-Project

    - by Rubberman
I am running CentOS 5.5 x86_64 with JDK 1.6, Eclipse Galileo, and the 0.9.7 ADT is installed; however, after installation, the Android project type is not available. I have checked in the installed packages list and it is installed. Anybody encounter this problem before? Could it be due to my use of the 64-bit java VM that is installed on my system?

  • Passing data to overridden base method in C#

    - by UpTheCreek
Bit of a dumb question, but I'm wondering what the accepted way of passing data from back to an overridden base method is in c#. e.g. I guess I could do: class A { int x; public virtual void DoStuff() { Console.WriteLine(x); } } class B : A { public override void DoStuff() { x = 1; base.DoStuff(); } } But is there a better method that for example doesn't require the use of a member variable?

  • Save from viewController?

    - by fuzzygoat
I have a very small bit of data that I would like to archive from my apps view. My question is, its far easier to save this data from the viewController, but should I really be pushing it back into my model and saving it there? BTW: I also need to do a quick load of this data when the app starts up.
