• why there is no power operator in java / c ++?

  While there is such operator - ** in Python , i was wondering why java and c++ havent got one too. It is easy to make one for classes you define in C++ with operator overloading ( and i believe such thing is possible also in java) , but when talking about primitive types such as int, double and so on , you'll have to use library function like Math.power (and usaully have to cast both to double). So - why not define such operator for primitive types ?

• A completely free and open programming language

  With Oracle vs Google trial, it seems that Java is not entirely Open and free (as free software) as I expected. Although there exists completely free/open JVM, it's hard to know what is a copyright infringement with Java, and what is not. So I'd like to know if there is a completely Open and free language with open and free IDE (Eclipse-like) out there, Object Oriented if possible, and able to make window-based applications for the main OSs (Linux, Mac, Windows).

• Get a list of packages on a fresh install

  I want a list of all packages installed, along with versions (if possible) on a clean install of Ubuntu (any version). I can use dpkg -l | grep '^ii' | awk '{print $2" "$3}' on a fresh installation, but that's not a good idea, as when a new version of Ubuntu is available, it has to be re run. Rather than relying on scripts, I prefer having a file, which lists all the packages that are installed on all systems

  Let's say I'm tracking a conversion like the following: View product > Customize > Finish order When I push the the above events, I also push a product ID and name attached to it, hoping that I could segment by that, but I can't figure out how.   The "Put" functionality of CompizConfig Settings Manager is great. I'd like to be able to move windows to the desktop corners by using Super+Down/Up+Left/Right for this; is that possible? Whenever I try to set something like that it is just reset to "Disabled". A workaround is of course to use the numeric pad, but I'd like to be able to do this on my EEE laptop as well without enabling and disabling NumLock all the time.

  Is it possible to create or extract the Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) for/from a monitor. I have some issues with my monitor with the VGA and HDMI cables and I would like to test if by adding the EDID to the Nvidia Settings it could help in solve this issues. With the VGA cable I get a black out error and with the HDMI I get some EDID errors (bad EDID). So how can I create the EDID or extract it from the monitor by detecting its capabilities.

  Do you think we'll ever see an IL (or other bytecode) processing unit? It sounds possible and would have a major benefit, because we wouldn't need the JITter. This isn't the same as compiling .NET directly to machine code, since the bytecode here is designed to be programmed and disassembled easily, unlike the bytecode used in x86 processors which is designed to work faster. What's stopping Intel (for example) from partnering with Microsoft and making such a .NET-optimised processor?

  Once application is maximized (say "Cheese") how can I restore its size back to the original? Is it possible to drag-and-drop from one application to another application in Unity?   I have seen many people around complaining about verbosity in programming languages. I find that, within some bounds, the more verbose a programming language is, the better it is to understand. I think that verbosity also reinforces writing clearer APIs for that particular language. The only disadvantage I can think of is that it makes you type more, but I mean, most people use IDEs that do all that work for you. so, What are possible downsides to a verbose programming language?

I would like to use thunderbird's own notification, but activating that turns into 3 messages per new mail: one from Thunderbird with mail info one general with mail info one just saying "You have new mail" and "no default action". Is it possible to exclude Thunderbird from the general notification? I would like to keep the other programs calling xfce4-notifyd.
