• can't configure openfire

  I'm trying to setup openfire on one of the servers here and I've gone through the windows installer, installed the service, started the service and I can't connect to the admin console. If I go to http://127.0.0.1:9090 (or http://127.0.0.1/index.html) all I get is a blank page. I also tried running the GUI instead of the service, and it said that it was listening on 127.0.0.1:9090 and when I navigate there or click "launch admin" I still get a blank page. What could be the problem? It's a windows server 2k3 machine with IIS running (runs a couple of other sites). edit openfire 3.6.4 I installed on my local machine without problems, so it's obviously something on the server that's causing it. There is no firewall installed on that server so I'm not sure what would be stopping it.

• postgres memory allocation tuning 2

  i've got a Ubuntu Linux system with 12Gb memory most of which (at least 10Gb) can be allocated solely to postgres. the system also has a 6 disk 15k SCSI RAID 10 setup. The process i'm trying to optimise is twofold. firstly a single threaded, single connection will do many inserts into 2-4 tables linked by foreign key. secondly many different complex queries are run against the resulting data, using group by extensively. this part especially needs to be optimised. i have four of these processes running at once in order to make use of the quad core CPU, therefore there will generally be no more than 5 concurrent connections (1 spare for admin tasks). what configuration changes to the default Postgres config would you recommend? I'm looking for the optimum values for things like work_mem, shared_buffers etc. relevant doco thanks!

• Craftsmanship Tour Day 1: Didit Long Island

  On Monday I was at Didit for my first ever craftsmanship visit. Didit seem to occupy a good part of a non-descript building in Rockville Centre Long Island. Since I had arrived early from Seattle I had some time to kill, so I stopped at the Rockville Diner on the corner of N Park Ave and Sunrise Hwy. I thoroughly enjoyed the pancakes and the friendly service. After walking to the Didit office I met Rik Dryfoos, the Didit Engineering Manager who organised my visit, and got the introduction to Didit and the work they are doing. I spent the morning in the room shared by the Didit developers, who are working on some fascinating deep engineering problems. After lunch at a local Thai place I setup a webcam to record an interview with Rik and Matt Roman (Didit VP of Engineering). I had a lot of trouble with the webcam, including losing several minutes of conversation, but in the end I was very happy the result.   Hello!   There is a new document available: Demantra Performance Clustering Factor Out of Order Ratio TABLE_REORG CHECK_REORG (Doc ID 1594372.1) Demantra Performance Clustering Factor Out of Order Ratio TABLE_REORG CHECK_REORG The table reorganization can be setup to automatically run in version 7.3.1.5.  In version 12.2.2 we run the TABLE_REORG.CHECK_REORG function at every appserver restart. If the function recommends a reorg then we strongly encourage to reorg the database object.  This is documented in the official docs. In versions 7.3.1.3 and 7.3.1.4, the TABLE_REORG module exists and can be used. It has two main functions that are documented in the Implementation Guide Supplement, Release 7.3, Part No. E26760-03, chapter 4. In short, if you are using version 7.3.1.3 or higher, you can check for the need to run a reorg by doing the following 2 steps: 1. Run TABLE_REORG.CHECK_REORG('T'); 2. Check the table LOG_TABLE_REORG for recommendations If you are on a version before 7.3.1.3, you will need to follow the instructions below to determine if you need to do a manual reorg. How to determine if a table reorg is needed 1. It is strongly encouraged by DEV that You gather statistics on the required table.  The prefered percentage for the gather is 100%. 2. • Wireless Repeating with two Netgear N750 (WNDR4300)

  I have a Netgear N750 as my main router, which connects to the internet via a modem. I have a second Netgear N750 which I want to use to repeat the wireless signal of the main router. I logged in to routerlogin of my main router (192.168.1.1) and set up the "Wireless Repeating Function". I set it as the "Wireless Base Station" and filled in the MAC adress of my second Netgear N750. Then I logged in to routerlogin of my second router and set it up as the "Wireless Repeater", I gave it the IP 192.168.1.11 and filled in the MAC adress of the base station. During the setup of the second router (Repeater) I had to disable all security functions. If I connect to the repeaters' WLAN signal, I get no internet connection. Maybe you can help me, thanks

• vqadmin "invalid language file" with google chrome

  We have been running our qmail setup for awhile with no issues. One of our admins has moved to Google Chrome as his main browser and we have noticed something odd. No matter what, when he loads the vqadmin page it errors on him with simply invalid language file. Yet if he loads Firefox, Opera, Safari or shudders IE8 it works fine. Searching google only results in 'Use IE' or 'Set english as your language in the browser'. A: I try to have people avoid IE if possible and B: There is no english option in Chrome.

• Compiling the Linux kernel, how much size is needed?

  I have downloaded the newest most stable Linux kernel, 2.6.33.2. I thought I would test this using VirtualBox. So I create a dynamically sized harddisk of 4 GB. And installed CentOS 5.3 with just the minimum packages. I setup the make menuconfig with just the default settings. • How best to backup 6x Win2k3 Servers

  We have a external HP LTO3 tape drive. It needs to backup 6 Windows 2003 machines every night. Servers are HP DL380 G3 and the tape drive is attached locally to one of them via SCSI. On a budget of $0, and a goal of keeping-it-simple, what is going to be the best way to backup these machines? What software to use? NT Backup? Or does HP have something better for free? We don't need image backups - file system + system state will be adequate. Do we need to copy the files to be backed up onto the machine with the tape drive attached? Edit: Let me ask a more focussed question: Would you use NT Backup or something else? No soap boxing please, we've after some quick advice from someone who's used a similar setup.

• Considering building a new system; but undecided about chassis

  I'm considering a new system build, and was thinking that this particular motherboard has features I need and like: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=667651&pagenumber=1&RSort=1&csid=ITD&recordsPerPage=5&body=REVIEWS#CustomerReviewsBlock .. but am unsure which model chassis to pair it with. I'd strongly prefer something from Cooler Master, as I'm a fan of their products, but am having a hard time deciding, and also don't want to get into some odd situation where the board doesn't properly fit. I plan on having two optical drives (5.25"), two internal HDs (3.5"), and will likely go with an SLI setup of 2 or possibly even 3 cards, so I'd need a chassis that is roomy enough to accomodate all of that, as well as the motherboard itself. Based on the stock available at that same site, do you all have any suggestions? The larger, the better, as I hate having components crammed together. Your help is most appreciated!

• Can't connect to Apple Time Capsule in home network using Home Plugs from Win 7 Machine

  I have the following home network setup with subnet 255.255.255.0 but recently moved my time capsule to a different location when I added a third Home Plug and can no longer ping or map a network drive to it from the Windows 7 Machine. However using Airport Utility on the Windows 7 machine I can manually configure the Time Capsule. Using a Macbook on WIFI Network 1 or 2 - I can backup to the time capsule, so its accessible via both the router wifi network and the time capsule wifi network. The Time Capsule is set to BRIDGE function - ie no NAT or DHCP server enabled. Any bright sparks out there that can help diagnose the problem? • Best way to use my windows box as a backup?

  I put a 1.5 TB HD in my Windows 7 box and my main computer is a MBP. I have a lot of professional files/folders in a FireWire 800 external HD connected to the MBP and I want to use the 1.5 TB HD in my Windows 7 box as a backup for both the HD and MBP. Right now I am just copying files manually to the HD over the network and that's very slow and open to failure (not rsync'd.) Anyone suggest some appropriate solutions? Should I just figure out how to setup RSync on the windows box or is there a better alternative? Thanks!

Registered users will be given the choice of getting a permanent url to their account on mydomain.com as a subdomain like (username.mydomain.com) or they can opt to have their own domain like www.userdomain.com. So the user can access his/her account through the subdomain URL or their own hostname and the request should be forwarded to a specific url on mydomain.com. For example: xyz.mydomain.com or www.xyz.com should give the user account from www.mydomain.com/webapp/account?id=xyz. The user should be completely unaware about where the content is coming from. Setup: My website is running as a webapp in tomcat 5.5.28 with apache as the web server. I am using a VPS which means I have control over all the configuration files (apache, tomcat and dns server). Can you tell me what are the configurations needed to achieve the above scenario??

• Apache2 alias in virtual host

  I have multiple virtual host in one server and plan to has some alias setup in one virtualhost. So I add the Alias /foo/ /path/to/foo/ in virtualhost directive,but it has no effect. request of host1/foo/ will return 404. But if I add this to /etc/apache2/mods-available/alias.conf, it works. But the problem is host2 will also share this alias. Is there a way to make the alias work only for host1? B.T.W, I use apache2ctl -l, there's no mod_alias.c listed, weird.

The Test.aspx file is not blank. Any idea what's going on here?

  Mozilla Thunderbird v.3.1.7 I am trying to setup Gmail, but none of the settings are working. I have tried every resource: Blogs, tutorials Instructions by Google Instructions by Thunderbird Questions here But, still its not working. My settings are as follows Server Settings Server Type: IMAP Mail server Server Name: imap.gmail.com Username: [email protected] Port: 993 Default: 993 Connection Security: SSL/TLS Authentication method: Encrypted password Outgoing server (SMTP) Server Name: smtp.gmail.com Port: 587 Default: 25 Connection Security: STARTTLS Authentication method: Encrypted password Username: [email protected] IMAP is enabled in my Gmail settings. ERROR: Connection to the server [email protected] timed out. I am behind a proxy server and I have configured those settings under: Thunderbird Preferences - Advanced - Network and Disk Space - Connection Settings - Manual Proxy Configuration The proxy configuration works, as when I created a Blogs and News feeds a/c, it was working properly and fetching the feeds for me. So, Thunderbird is configured properly as per the proxy settings. Help me.

• Advantages / disadvantages of having DynDNS access on a computer vs the router

  I have a shiny new toy, a Cisco Wireless-N Gigabit Security Router with VPN (WRVS4400N). While looking through the instruction manual, I discovered that it had support for DynDNS built-in. We've currently got the DynDNS client running on one of the servers (that people SSH to, as documented in this question); but the reason for the router update is to move away from SSH to VPN. To that end, is there any difference in behaviour/functionality/maintainability to run it off the computer, as opposed to the router? Thus far, DynDNS has more or less a set-and-forget setup, but since the feature was there, I wanted to know if it was a better location for the process...

  Please follow this steps: 1. Log in to your Control Panel. 2. From the menu, select Databases ? SQL Server 2008. 3. Click the Create User button. 4. Enter a user name and password and click Save. In this demonstration, the user name is dotnetuser and the password is dotnetuserpass. 5. Click the Create Database button. 6. Enter a database name and grant access to the user you created above and click Save. In this demonstration the database is called DotNetAuthentication. 7. Locate and run the ASP.NET SQL Server Setup Wizard. This file is located in your .NET framework directory and is named aspnet_regsql.exe (example: C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\aspnet_regsql.exe). 8. Click Next and choose Configure SQL Server for application services. 9. Click Next and enter the server name and database log in credentials. The server name is the web site pointer address to where your application will be published and the log in credentials are the SQL server user name and password created earlier. 10. Click Next twice and the wizard will take a moment to complete the scripting actions that populate the new database with all the objects necessary to configure the ASP.NET provider.  Once complete, click Finish to close the wizard. 11. Finally, modify the web.config file in your ASP.NET web application to use the database you created.

• Error setting up Data Protection Manager 2010 Agents / Network "Unauthenticated" in network settings

  I'm not sure if the two are connected but i suspect they are. Basically I'm tring to setup Data Protection Manager 2010 on a fresh install of Server 2008 R2 in a SBS 2003 domain. Everything went fine until trying to install agents across the network. Upon clicking add, i get the following error message: Unable to connect to the Active Directory Domain Services Database. Make sure that the DPM server is a member of a domain and that the controller is running. Also verify that there is network connectivity between the DPM server and the domain controller. ID: 7 As usual (worryingly) the MSDN support for 2010 products is nearly non existant, clicking the error ID simply gives a page not found error. So after 2 days of Googling and trying various fixes (DNS settings, adding permissions to GPO objects, rejoining the domain and many more) I thought I'd ask here in the hope that someone out there may have had this issue before. Any help greatly appreciated!

• Ubuntu 12 Server messing up my hard disk

  I'm installing Ubuntu server on a disk with 12GB available. During the setup, I choose the default LVM-based partition layout. However for some reason, Ubuntu decides that it only wants to use 4GB of this disk. How do I reclaim the remaining space of the hard disk? • 8021x wireless clients auto connect prior to user login

  I am using a 2008 r2 dc that also performs Radius (NPS), I also have a 2008 r2 certificate authority which is giving out certificates. The computers are getting the certificate and when a user logs into the device (that has previously logged in) gets put on the correct VLAN (according to there user access). However I cant get the computers to join the wireless network prior to logging in, so that they can log in with their domain accounts and authenticate through the wireless. The basic setup is Computer gets group policy which tells it to get a certificate the computer then has a seperate vlan to join just as a computer account however the wireless computer wont connect through that vlan. (this vlan allows login information only then once the users credentials are verified it puts them onto another VLAN). So I am trying to work out why the notebook wont auto connect to the wireless network as a computer. Thanks

• Snow Leopard - resolving hostnames issue

  This worked in Leopard, although since Snowie came along … I have a Location setup with a DNS server to use [eg 10.0.0.17] , and a search string [eg sub.dom.ain.com] In the terminal: $ nslookup cake Server 10.0.0.17 Address: 10.0.0.17#53 Name: cake.sub.dom.ain.com Address: 10.0.0.38 So works like a charm. Although if I just the hostname cake in any other application within OSX - such as Safari/CoRD, they simply can't resolve the hostname. I have to instead use the FQDN cake.sub.dom.ain.com - why is this so? Why did this work in Leopard and is now broken? Would love a solution. Thanks
