• Google App Engine dev_appserver can't find PIL (I've installed it)

  I recently upgraded my Google App Engine launcher on my Mac, running OSX 10.5.8, and afterwards my projects that work with images stopped working locally. It seems to be the same problem that I had when first using GAE locally to work with images, before I installed PIL. Here is the error I get: SystemError: Parent module 'PIL' not loaded I have PIL installed. When I run python normally, I can access it and work with it as expected. I also checked to ensure that dev_appserver.py was running the same version of Python. If I open the interpreter and type sys.version I get this back: 2.5 (r25:51918, Sep 19 2006, 08:49:13) [GCC 4.0.1 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 5341)] This is identical to what I get when I display the sys.version from my projects running through dev_appserver. Any thoughts on why dev_appserver can't find the PIL module? I have been banging my head against this for a bit. Thank you!

• Serving large generated files using Google App Engine?

  Hiya, Presently I have a GAE app that does some offline processing (backs up a user's data), and generates a file that's somewhere in the neighbourhood of 10 - 100 MB. I'm not sure of the best way to serve this file to the user. The two options I'm considering are: Adding some code to the offline processing code that 'spoofs' it as a form upload to the blob store, and going thru the normal blobstore process to serve the file. Having the offline processing code store the file somewhere off of GAE, and serving it from there. Is there a much better approach I'm overlooking? I'm guessing this is functionality that isn't well suited to GAE. I had thought of storing in the datastore as db.Text or Dd.Blob but there I encounter the 1 MB limit. Any input would be appreciated,

• Accessing a drive on remote server via app.config

  I am working on a website with a scheduled dataloader exe. The website lives on the web server and the dataloader lives on the DB server. One of the steps in the process is for the dataloader to access the WEB server (to copy/paste a maintenance page file..e.g.\192.168.1.101\c$\maintenance.htm). I am, not surprisingly, running into permissions issues because the dataloader needs to be able to login to the WEB server as an admin to copy the file. Is there a way I can set up logging in (something akin to impersonating a user through an App.config?) Thanks! -KC

• App Engine - Save response from an API in the data store as file (blob)

  Hi there, I'm banging my head against the wall with this one: What I want to do is store a file that is returned from an API in the data store as a blob. Here is the code that I use on my local machine (which of course works due to an existing file system): client.convertHtml(html, open('html.pdf', 'wb')) Since I cannot write to a file on App Engine I tried several ways to store the response, without success. Any hints on how to do this? I was trying to do it with StringIO and managed to store the response but then weren't able to store it as a blob in the data store. Thanks, Chris

• Google App Engine, Java, and HTTP Performance

  A friend and I are currently working on a turn-based game with chat with both desktop browser and Android clients, with Google App Engine as the server. We're using the Java API for GAE and using HTTP for communication with the server. We've implemented simple chat functionality, and we're getting undesirable latencies 1-3 seconds from both the browser and Android clients while just posting simple one-word chat messages. My friend thought it would be best to use XMPP instead of HTTP, but we want to use a Google Accounts cookie for authentication from the Android client, and according to the GAE documentation, XMPP clients cannot use a Google Accounts cookie and must use the user's password. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where the latency might be coming from, how to troubleshoot it, and/or what to do about it? Also, is anyone aware of any opensource implementations of chat (or something similar) on GAE done in Java? Can't seem to find any.

• iOS - Losing in-app subscription?

  I've just built an iOS app that uses a non-reoccuring subscription model. You hit "buy" and then when the client device receives the receipt from the Apple server it whizzes it off to my server to validate it and add the subscription to my user database. If the connection fails before my server has responded then the request is cached, ready to be resent the next time the client comes online. My problem is, what happens if the connection fails between when the user hits the buy button and the receipt is received by the client from Apple? Theres no way for it to know that the purchase has been made? Presumably I should add a "restore purchases" button that sends all of the users receipts to my server which checks if they've already been validated and their respective subscriptions added to the database? Is there a less intrusive way of doing this?

• Many-to-Many Relationship (with properties) in Google App Engine for Java

  I understand from the official documentation on unowned relationships that the app must use sets of Key objects on either side of the relationship. This makes perfect sense. Coming from many years of RDBM-style programming, though, I'm pretty confused about how I can model properties of that relationship itself. For example, if I have entities Category and Entry in my many-to-many relationship and would like to persist a dateAdded property, or some other data that are only relevant when both sides of the relationship are known. I suppose it would be possible to create a third class : CategoryEntry that links the two, but this seems like a kludge. What is the proposed way to model this kind of situation ?

  I am coming back to an old Google App Engine project on which I saw a bug. During this lag, I have been upgrading my AppEngine SDK and is now set at 1.3. When I try to run the same project again, I see the following exception: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: com.google.apphosting.api.ApiProxy$Environment.getDefaultNamespace()Ljava/lang/String; at com.google.appengine.api.NamespaceManager.get(NamespaceManager.java:56) at com.google.appengine.api.memcache.MemcacheServiceImpl.setNamespace(MemcacheServiceImpl.java:181) at com.google.appengine.api.memcache.MemcacheServiceImpl.(MemcacheServiceImpl.java:145) at com.google.appengine.api.memcache.MemcacheServiceFactory.getMemcacheService(MemcacheServiceFactory.java:25) The line causing the problem is: CacheManager.getInstance().getCacheFactory().createCache(Collections.emptyMap()); (It is the same line as suggested by the AppEngine documentation to create a memcache object. It used to work fine previously. ) Any suggestions on how to fix it?

  Hi, I'm going to sell some video and music (which I have right to use and sell) in iPhone app. But I'm not sure whether this is allowed by Apple. The plan is to create a consumable in-app purchase product and ask user to pay it when visit the individual video page. After successful purchase, user can download or view it online without any limitation. Server side will also remember the purchase status so the user won't be asked to pay when he visit this vide page next time. • Web browsing is fast, but downloads are slow

  I work for a company on my university's campus, helping with general IT problems and some web development. But lately there has been a problem that has me and my boss completely stumped. We, plus one contractor, make up the entire IT department, so I'm reaching out to you for help. All around the office, we have wall jacks. These collect in a closet down the hall and all plug into a switch. This switch, along with our individual server jacks, plugs into another switch, and that switch plugs into our firewall hardware. Then the firewall is connected out to our campus network. Our campus internet is, well, very fast. I don't know exactly the terms, tiers, etc., but we have thousands of students and downloads can run as fast as 10 MB/s at night; uploads are sometimes even faster. I think we're practically ISP level. In short, I have a lot of faith that it is not the campus side of things that is causing a problem, combined with other evidence I'll mention in a moment. So our symptoms: web browsing is fast. Web pages, images, etc. load instantly. No problems there. But then when I go to download something, the download starts fast but very quickly (a matter of seconds) drops to nearly 0. Often it will actually drop to 0 and time out. This happens with even very small files, 1 MB or less. It smells to me like a QoS sort of thing. I'm not entirely sure, and I wanted to get your opinions first. My boss is hesitant to touch our firewall, much less let me touch it, and it was set up and is managed by a consultant remotely. These problems don't seem tied to a time of the day. I've tried downloads after 5:00 and still the same thing happens. From my desk, I can turn on my wireless adapter and pick up the campus wireless access point. If I unplug ethernet and connect to it, downloads are fast. This adds to my suspicion that it's limited to our company network. Also, a number of weeks ago the consultant upgraded our firewall firmware. Suddenly everything was very fast. I tested with downloads from Sun and speedtest.net and things were blazing fast, as they should be with our campus internet! It was wonderful, and I figured the slow speeds were an old firmware bug. In a matter of days, things steadily declined until they were back to the old symptoms. Oh, and we have antivirus installed on every computer, and we keep it up to date. Though I suppose the possibility is still there that someone could have spyware which is bogging down our internet, in which case what is the easiest/best way to find this out? (maybe this should go in a separate question) Thank you for your patience in reading all of this. Do you have any ideas as to what I can try? Is this something that you've experienced before? What sort of tools or methods can I use to try and diagnose the problem? P.S. everything here is Windows. Windows Server 2003 and 2008 on our servers, and Windows XP on employees' machines. Update: We are submitting a ticket to the university to just take a look and see if they see anything unusual and/or can suggestion methods for us to try and pinpoint our problem. Hopefully they'll be helpful! I'll update this to let you know what goes on. Update again: We found a hub (yes, a HUB) right between our campus connection and our firewall. It had only those two ethernet cables plugged into it, nothing else. After removing the hub, our speeds have jumped up to several mbps. However in talking with the campus, we got them to run a gigabit line to our firewall in place of the 100mbps line. As of friday, we are at about 65 mbps up and down (according to speedtest.net at 8am)!! Go NC State!!

  I am having much problems setting up the proxy through app.config. I want 2 ip address to go through my proxy on my local computer. From what i can tell i need to set a proxy then set a bypass list. So i figure .* will match everything and i'll just remove the two i want. So i wrote the below and the 2 ip address (i realize the 2nd is a range) is being bypassed. Maybe i need to more the add to the end? the address are still being bypassed.   Hi, I have a unexpected problem. I had create a war with grails war. Then I had deployed in Tomcat. For my surprise the crud works fine but I don't know what persistence is using. So I did this test: Compare grails prod run-app with grails prod run-war. The first works fine, and does conect with the mysql database. The other don't. • Problem with testing In App with sandbox test account

  Hi, I created a test user account through the Manage User Accounts in iTunes Connect. When you create such an account you have to select a valid storefront for your account. I chose US Store. Now I signed out from the store in App Store settings on my device. Ran the application and tried to perform a purchase. I successfully login with my test account. After I press Confirm when entering my credentials I get an alert, that comes from SKPaymentTransactionStateFailed from the observer. It says "Your account is only valid for purchases in the US iTunes Store". The error state = 0 unknown. Second time when i try to perform the purchase, StoreKit only asks me for a password like the previous login was successful. After entering a password I can perform a purchase. My question is whether it's only because it's a testing account and the application is not actually on AppStore? What should I do to avoid this message or at least to continue the purchasing process?   Regarding data validation, I've heard that the options are to "fail fast, fail early" or "complete validation". The first approach fails on the very first validation error, whereas the second one builds up a list of failures and presents it. I'm wondering about this in the context of both server-side and client-side data validation. Which method is appropriate in what context, and why? My personal preference for data-validation on the client-side is the second method which informs the user of all failing constraints. I'm not informed enough to have an opinion about the server-side, although I would imagine it depends on the business logic involved.

  Would you guys show me a way to simulating concurrent access to memcache on Google App Engine? I'm trying with LocalServiceTestHelpers and threads but don't have any luck. Every time I try to access Memcache within a thread, then I get this error: ApiProxy$CallNotFoundException: The API package 'memcache' or call 'Increment()' was not found I guess that the testing library of GAE SDK tried to mimic the real environment and thus setup the environment for only one thread (the thread that running the test) which cannot be seen by other thread. • Dynamic Connection Strings for Strongly Typed DataSet in a Class Library using App.Config

  This is my first question on StackOverflow.com and I'm not sure if this is the correct way to do this. I found a similar question titled: Modifying the Data Source for the Strongly Typed Dataset Connection String. However, the answer provided is not working for me. I'm not able to comment on it because I don't have enough "reputation points" (again, I just signed up), and I didn't want to provide an "answer", because I don't know the correct answer. My problem is that I need to be able to modify the connection string inside the generated myproject.dll.config file, but doing so has no effect for me at all. My library still uses the default connection string that was setup at design time. I've tried everything I know to try, but still no luck. I've tried working around the issue using multiple different approaches, but still the problem persists. I can't find any help on the internet with my specific problem either. It would be great if somebody could shed some light as to why my modified config file isn't being read. Useful information: I'm using a Strongly Typed DataSet I don't know the actual connection string at design time. The app.config doesn't allow me to specify a 'User' scoped connection string. I'm tied to a class library (no Windows Forms) Thank you for any help! Luc

  I've got a grails 1.1 web app running great in development but when I try and run it in production with an sqlserver database it crashes in a weird way. • Why use Django on Google App Engine?

  When researching Google App Engine (GAE), it's clear that using Django is wildly popular for developing in Python on GAE. I've been scouring the web to find information on the costs and benefits of using Django, to find out why it's so popular. While I've been able to find a wide variety of sources on how to run Django on GAE and the various methods of doing so, I haven't found any comparative analysis on why Django is preferable to using the webapp framework provided by Google. To be clear, it's immediately apparent why using Django on GAE is useful for developers with an existing skillset in Django (a majority of Python web developers, no doubt) or existing code in Django (where using GAE is more of a porting exercise). My team, however, is evaluating GAE for use on an all-new project and our existing experience is with TurboGears, not Django. It's been quite difficult to determine why Django is beneficial to a development team when the BigTable libraries have replaced Django's ORM, sessions and authentication are necessarily changed, and Django's templating (if desirable) is available without using the entire Django stack. Finally, it's clear that using Django does have the advantage of providing an "exit strategy" if we later wanted to move away from GAE and need a platform to target for the exodus. I'd be extremely appreciative for help in pointing out why using Django is better than using webapp on GAE. I'm also completely inexperienced with Django, so elaboration on smaller features and/or conveniences that work on GAE are also valuable to me. Thanks in advance for your time!
