  • When did you feel comfortable with programming?

    I've been programming for about 6 months, but i still feel like i haven't learned anything. Or maybe i'm overwhelmed by the things i still don't know. Am i doing something wrong here or is this normal? I want to be able to work as a freelancer in a year or two, but i'm not sure if that goal is achievable. So when did you feel comfortable using your programming language of choice and how did you learn it?

    I want a folder /public_html to symlink to /current/app/webroot, both are in the same directory I have tried ln -s public_html current/app/webroot amongst other things, but no joy so far. Any ideas?

    I don't really know much about sockets except how to read and write to them as if they were files. I know a little about using socket selectors. I don't get why you have to flush a socket, what's actually happening there? The bits just hang out somewhere in memory until they get pushed off? I read some things online about sockets, but it's all very abstract and high level. What's actually happening here?

    here's my question: this works perfectly: type Asdf = [Integer] type ListOfAsdf = [Asdf] Now I want to do the same but with the Integral class restriction: type Asdf2 a = (Integral a) => [a] type ListOfAsdf2 = (Integral a) => [Asdf2 a] I got this error: Illegal polymorphic or qualified type: Asdf2 a Perhaps you intended to use -XImpredicativeTypes In the type synonym declaration for `ListOfAsdf2' I have tried a lot of things but I am still not able to create a type with a class restriction as described above.   • SQL Server Query with "ELSE:"

    I have various VB6 projects I'm maintaining with some of the queries being passed to the server having "ELSE:" with the colon used in case statements. I'm wondering can someone tell me what the **ll the colon is used for? It causes errors in SQL2005 and greater, but SQL2000 works with no complaints. I'd like to just remove it from the code & re-compile, but I'm afraid it'll break 10 other things in the application.. Thanks in advance...

    I have to dynamically add a list of views (the views use RelativeLayout). Can I do this by specifying the view definition in xml and instantiate multiple objects off it? This gives the usual benefits of separating the view part from the code (for e.g., making it easy for the UI guys to alter things) or Is going the ArrayAdapter the suggested/only route?

  • How do you get the width of an element without a defined width?

    How would you find out the width of a element that is wrapped by 20 odd other elements, but the only fixed width I know is the main wrapper's which is 800px. All child elements are generally blocks, floating or not, with different paddings and margins. I don't really need the answer to a specific case, I'm just wondering if there are tools or tricks to quickly calculate such things. Thanks

Different sources appear to say different things and trhe venerable php.net iteslf (appears) not to explicitly state this - although I must admit, I only had a quick look. In cases where I am passing around 'heavy' objects, I need to pass by reference, but I dont want to keep typing: function foo(TypeName& $obj) if I can get away with simply, function foo(TypeName $obj) So what does the standard say?

  • Should the function or the caller be resonsible for input validation?

    I'm doing a security audit on a fairly large php application and was wondering where I should include my user-input validation. Should I validate the data, then send the clean data off to the back-end functions or should I rely on each function to do it's own validation? Or even both? Is there any standard or best-practice for this sort of thing? Currently the app does both inconsistently and I'll like to make things more consistent.

  • Sorting MySQL table by next due date

    Hi folks, I have a MySQL table that stores (amongst other things) a persons date of birth. Is there any way to sort the table so the next due birthday is at the top? I have the date stored in standard yyyy-mm-dd DATE format and seperate year, month and day fields so I can sort it by the first birthday of the year (ORDER BY month, day) but I can't seem to get any further. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Zagga

    Hey all, this is my first post. I recently upgraded a wordpress site, all things load but on the top of the page and bottom of the page I get this error. Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: open(/tmp/sess_6v2kul3t823ah9074g3cl2lrt6, O_RDWR) failed: Permission denied (13) in /home/admin_m3/incommunion.org/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/wordpress-automatic-upgrade.php on line 121 How can I remove it from the page? I believe the server automatically upgraded the version of Wordpress. Any idea? Newbie A
