• cannot boot ubuntu 13.10 with my usb, Can i change the kernal on my laptop to run it?

  Currently i am running 12.04 and looking for an upgrade to 13.10 I first tried a bootable 64bit usb and failed. With the message saying "Kernal requires an x86-64 CPU but only detected an I686 CPU Unable to boot please use a kernal appropriate for your CPU" then tried 32bit and same message came up. Is this due to my laptop simply being to slow? or can/should i change the kernal somehow? • Proper way to encapsulate a Shader into different modules

  I am planning to build a Shader system which can be accessed through different components/modules in C++. Each component has its own functionality like transform-relevated stuff (handle the MVP matrix, ...), texture handler, light calculation, etc... So here's an example: I would like to display an object which has a texture and a toon shading material applied and it should be moveable. So I could write ONE shading program that handles all 3 functionalities and they are accessed through 3 different components (texture-handler, toon-shading, transform). This means I have to take care of feeding a GLSL shader with different uniforms/attributes. This implies to know all necessary uniform locations and attribute locations, that the GLSL shader owns. And it would also necessary to provide different algorithms to calculate the value for each input variable. Similar functions would be grouped together in one component. A possible way would be, to wrap all shaders in a own definition file written in JSON/XML and parse that file in C++ to get all input members and create and compile the resulting GLSL. But maybe there is another way that is not so complex? So I'm searching for a way to build a system like that, but I'm not sure yet which is the best approach.

• Using texture() in combination with JBox2D

  I'm getting some trouble using the texture() method inside beginShape()/endShape() clause. In the display()-method of my class TowerElement (a bar which is DYNAMIC), I draw the object like following: void display(){ Vec2 pos = level.getLevel().getBodyPixelCoord(body); float a = body.getAngle(); // needed for rotation pushMatrix(); translate(pos.x, pos.y); rotate(-a); fill(temp); // temp is a color defined in the constructor stroke(0); beginShape(); vertex(-w/2,-h/2); vertex(w/2,-h/2); vertex(w/2,h-h/2); vertex(-w/2,h-h/2); endShape(CLOSE); popMatrix(); } Now, according to the API, I can use the texture() method inside the shape definition. Now when I remove the fill(temp) and put texture(img) (img is a PImage defined in the constructor), the stroke gets drawn, but the bar isn't filled and I get the warning texture() is not available with this renderer What can I do in order to use textures anyway? I don't even understand the error message, since I do not know much about different renderers.

• Is there such thing like a "refactoring/maintainability group" role in software companies?

  So, I work in a company that does embedded software development, other groups focus in the core development of different products' software and my department (which is in another geographical location) which is located at the factory has to deal with software development as well, but across all products, so that we can also fix things quicker when the lines go down due to software problems with the product. In other words, we are generalists while other groups specialize on each product. Thing is, it is kind of hard to get involved in core development when you are distributed geographically (well, I know it really isn't that hard, but there might be unintended cultural/political barriers when it comes to the discipline of collaborating remotely). So I figured that, since we are currently just putting fires out and somewhat being idle/sub-utilized (even though we are a new department, or maybe that is the reason), I thought that a good role for us could be detecting areas of opportunity of refactoring and rearchitecting code and all other implementations that might have to do with stewarding maintainability and modularity. Other groups aren't focused on this because they don't have the time and they have aggressive deadlines, which damage the quality of the code (eternal story of software projects) The thing is that I want my group/department to be recognized by management and other groups with this role officially, and I'm having trouble to come up with a good definition/identity of our group for this matter. So my question is: is this role something that already exists?, or am I the first one to make something like this up?

• Using foldr to append two lists together (Haskell)

  I have been given the following question as part of a college assignment. Due to the module being very short, we are using only a subset of Haskell, without any of the syntactic sugar or idiomatic shortcuts....I must write: append xs ys : The list formed by joining the lists xs and ys, in that order append (5:8:3:[]) (4:7:[]) => 5:8:3:4:7:[] I understand the concept of how foldr works, but I am only starting off in Functional programming. I managed to write the following working solution (hidden for the benefit of others in my class...) : However, I just can't for the life of me, explain what the hell is going on!? I wrote it by just fiddling around in the interpreter, for example, the following line : foldr (\x -> \y -> x:y) [] (2:3:4:[]) which returned [2:3:4] , which led me to try, foldr (\x -> \y -> x:y) (2:3:4:[]) (5:6:7:[]) which returned [5,6,7,2,3,4] so I worked it out from there. I came to the correct solution through guess work and a bit of luck... I am working from the following definition of foldr: foldr = \f -> \s -> \xs -> if null xs then s else f (head xs) (foldr f s (tail xs) ) Can someone baby step me through my correct solution? I can't seem to get it....I already have scoured the web, and also read a bunch of SE threads, such as How foldr works

• Audio not working in 12.10

  I did a clean install of 12.10, when I open Sound Settings in gnome the only device in the list is "Dummy Output", and sound is not working. Sound worked fine out of the box in 12.04 I ran alsamixer, it says my card is "HDA Intel", and chip is "Realtek ALC880". The alsamixer playback output was set to mute at first, unmuting did not fix. I checked out the info at http://www.unixmen.com/2012003-howto-resolve-nosound-problem-on-ubuntu/ as suggested on a similar question, I've done everything there except installing the ubuntu audio dev team driver. Should I try install this? • Is there a better strategy than relying on the compiler to catch errors?

  I've been programming in C and C++ for some time, although I would say I'm far from being an expert. For some time, I've been using various strategies to develop my code such as unit tests, test driven design, code reviews and so on. When I wrote my first programs in BASIC, I typed in long blocks before finding they would not run and they were a nightmare to debug. So I learned to write a small bit and then test it. These days, I often find myself repeatedly writing a small bit of code then using the compiler to find all the mistakes. That's OK if it picks up a typo but when you start adjusting the parameters types etc just to make it compile you can screw up the design. It also seems that the compiler is creeping into the design process when it should only be used for checking syntax. There's a danger here of over reliance on the compiler to make my programs better. Are there better strategies than this? I vaguely remember some time ago an article on a company developing a type of C compiler where an extra header file also specified the prototypes. The idea was that inconsistencies in the API definition would be easier to catch if you had to define it twice in different ways.

  If this is possible, how can I change what a method does after I might have created an instance of that class and wish to keep the reference to that object but override a public method in it's class' definition? • Dell Inspiron7520 and ubntu 12.04 issues

  I have a DELL Inspiron 7520 in the highest configuration: 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3612QM processor (6M Cache, up to 3.1 GHz) 15.6" Full High Definition (1080p) LED Display 8GB3 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz 1TB 5400RPM SATA HDD + 32GB mSATA SSD w/Intel Smart Response Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD) AMD Radeon™ HD 7730M 2GB 6.09 lbs and I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 few days ago and I'm facing some issues: 1) sometimes the whole ntb freezes and I have to hold power button for 5 secs to shut it down. I think it is something with VGA and connected external monitor. I have read somewhere that it is already a reported bug, but what I am not sure about that it is doing sporadically. Sometimes it freezes right after I log in, sometime I ran few hours and then it freezes. I am using those proprietary drivers but I wasn't been able to install those with updates. 2) the next issue is the fan is quite noisy even when the ntb is almost Idle. (max 10% CPU usage). Can you recommend me some software which could do this power management to lower the noise? I have tried CPU frequency scaling indicator, but it seems that it has not any effects. 3) and issue no. 3: when I want to log out, restart or shutdown using the menu in upper right corner the upper and left trays disappear, but programs are still running and they won't close to complete log out or shutting down the OS. When I use the CLI command, it works fine. Thanks for any help you can provide.

• Value my C++ knowledge

  I have only followed antiRTFM tutorials and read 2 books So, I'll list the things I know better : basic input output and all the variables : integers ( signed unsigned ), float, double, char arrays if, for, while, switch functions, and passing variables to functions and return type thing classes and the concept of oop with separating declaration and definition in the header and in the source pointers so this and some more i think is all i know of C++.. But, i need some exercises to test my knowledge because i want to move on to the library SDL, so I don't know if i should feel ready or not to move on to something totally different.. I feel I should know the basics for good at least. So the question is : How can i value my c++ knowledge? Is there any online tests? Is there any GDD ( Game Design Document ) for free to use and see if i can manage to do it so "i'd pass" ? ( I'm saying GDD since ill move on to SDL and try to make my own game ) When should I move to SDL? What are ALL the things I should "master" ( master is a big word to say.. but so you understand what i mean ) before moving on ? Please I'm really in need of expert advice. I think my question is detailed so i hope you understand what i mean and can give me a good reply. Thanks for the help!

• Reliance on the compiler

  I've been programming in C and C++ for some time, although I would say I'm far from being expert. For some time I've been using various strategies to develop my code such as unit tests, test driven design, code reviews and so on. When I wrote my first programs in BASIC I typed in long listings before finding they would not run and they were a nightmare to debug. So I learnt to write a small bit and then test it. These days I often find myself repeatedly writing a small bit of code then using the compiler to find all the mistakes. That's OK if it picks up a typo but when you start adjusting the parameters types etc just to make it compile you can screw up the design. It also seems that the compiler is creeping into the design process when it should only be used for checking syntax. There's a danger here of over reliance on the compiler to make my programs better. Are there better strategies than this ? I vaguely remember some time ago an article on a company developing a type of C compiler where an extra header file also specified the prototypes. The idea was that inconsistencies in the API definition would be easier to catch if you had to define it twice in different ways.

• What's a good algorithm for a random, uneven distribution of a fixed amount of a resource?

  Problem I have X, a positive integer, of some resource, R. There are N potential targets. I want to distribute all of R to the N targets in some "interesting" way. "Interesting" means: Some targets may not get any R. It should rarely be near even (with a majority of target getting near X/N of the resource). There should be at least a small chance of one target getting all of R. Bad solutions The naive approach would be to pick a random target and give one R to it and repeat X times. This would result in too even of an approach. The next idea is to pick a random number between 1 and X and give it to a random target. This results in too large of a number (at least X/2 on average) being given to one target. Question This algorithm will be used frequently and I want the distribution to be interesting and uneven so that the surprise doesn't wear off for users. Is there a good algorithm for something in between these two approaches, that fits the definition of interesting above?

• nginx: How can I set proxy_* directives only for matching URIs?

  I've been at this for hours and I can't figure out a clean solution. Basically, I have an nginx proxy setup, which works really well, but I'd like to handle a few urls more manually. Specifically, there are 2-3 locations for which I'd like to set proxy_ignore_headers to Set-Cookie to force nginx to cache them (nginx doesn't cache responses with Set-Cookie as per http://wiki.nginx.org/HttpProxyModule#proxy_ignore_headers). So for these locations, all I'd like to do is set proxy_ignore_headers Set-Cookie; I've tried everything I could think of outside of setting up and duplicating every config value, but nothing works. I tried: Nesting location directives, hoping the inner location which matches on my files would just set this value and inherit the rest, but that wasn't the case - it seemed to ignore anything set in the outer location, most notably proxy_pass and I end up with a 404). Specifying the proxy_cache_valid directive in an if block that matches on $request_uri, but nginx complains that it's not allowed ("proxy_cache_valid" directive is not allowed here). Specifying a variable equal to "Set-Cookie" in an if block, and then trying to set proxy_cache_valid to that variable later, but nginx isn't allowing variables for this case and throws up. It should be so simple - modifying/appending a single directive for some requests, and yet I haven't been able to make nginx do that. What am I missing here? Is there at least a way to wrap common directives in a reusable block and have multiple location blocks refer to it, after adding their own unique bits? Thank you. • Python in command line runs the wrong version?

  I have several versions of Python installed on a Windows 7 computer. I want to run Python 2.7 by default, but for whatever reason, typing python in the command line runs Python version 2.4.5. I've tried adding C:\Python27 to my system path variable as per this question, and manually combed my path variable it to make sure Python 2.4.5 wasn't tossed in there by mistake, but that didn't fix the issue. I have to type in C:\Python27\python.exe every time I want to access the correct version of python I want. What other places can I check? How can I make the command line use the correct version of python? I also found this but it's not for windows.   I am trying to hide a subdomain and subdirectory from users. I know it may be easier to use a virtual host but will that not change direct links pointing at our site?   Background I have a client site that consists of a CakePHP installation and a Magento installation: /web/example.com/ /web/example.com/app/ <== CakePHP /web/example.com/app/webroot/ <== DocumentRoot /web/example.com/app/webroot/store/ <== Magento /web/example.com/config/ <== Site-wide config /web/example.com/vendors/ <== Site-wide libraries The server runs Apache 2.2.3. The problem The whole company has FTP access and got used to clogging up the /web/example.com/, /web/example.com/app/webroot/, and /web/example.com/app/webroot/store/ directories with their own files. Sometimes these files need HTTP access and sometimes they don't. In any case, this mess makes my job harder when it comes to maintaining the site. Code merges, tarring the live code, etc, is very complicated and usually requires a bunch of filters. Abandoned solution At first, I thought I would set up a new subdomain on the same server, move all of their files there, and change their FTP chroot. But that wouldn't work for these reasons: Firstly, I have no idea (and neither do they remember) what marketing materials they've sent out that contain URLs to certain resources they've uploaded to the server, using the main domain, and also using abstract subdomains that use the main virtual host because it has ServerAlias *.example.com. So suddenly having them only use static.example.com isn't feasible. Secondly, The PHP scripts in their projects are potentially very non-portable. I want their files to stay in as similar an environment as they were built as I can. Also, I do not want to debug their code to make it portable. Half-baked solution After some thought, I decided to find a way to section off the actual website files into another directory that they would not touch. The company's uploaded files would stay where they were. This would ensure that I didn't break any of their projects that needed HTTP access. It would look something like this: /web/example.com/ <== A bunch of their files are in here /web/example.com/app/webroot/ <== 1st DocumentRoot; A bunch of their files are in here /web/example.com/app/webroot/store/ <== Some more are in here /web/example.com/site/ <== New dir; Contains only site files /web/example.com/site/app/ <== CakePHP /web/example.com/site/app/webroot/ <== 2nd DocumentRoot /web/example.com/site/app/webroot/store/ <== Magento /web/example.com/site/config/ <== Site-wide config /web/example.com/site/vendors/ <== Site-wide libraries After I made this change, I would not need to pay attention to anything except for the stuff within /web/example.com/site/ and my job would be a lot easier. I would be the only one changing stuff in there. So here's where the Apache magic would happen: I need an HTTP request to http://www.example.com/ to first use /web/example.com/app/webroot/ as the document root. If nothing is found (no miscellaneous uploaded company projects are found), try finding something within /web/example.com/site/app/webroot/. Another thing to keep in mind is, the site might have some problems if the $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] variable reads /web/example.com/app/webroot/ but the actual files are within /web/example.com/site/app/webroot/. It would be better if the DOCUMENT_ROOT environment variable could be /web/example.com/site/app/webroot/ for anything within the /web/example.com/site/app/webroot/ directory. Conclusion Is my half-baked solution possible with Apache 2.2.3? Is there a better way to solve this problem?
