• reading newlines with FORMAT statement

  I'm writing a preprocessor and postprocessor for Fortran input and output using FORMAT-like statements (there are reasons not to use a FORTRAN library). I want to treat the new line ("/") character correctly. I don't have a Fortran compiler immediately to hand. Is there a simple algorithm for working out how many newlines are written or consumed (This post just gives reading examples) [Please assume a FORTRAN77-like mentality in the FORTRAN code and correct any FORTRAN syntax on my part] UPDATE: no comments yet so I am reduced to finding a compiler and running it myself. I'll post the answers if I'm not beaten to it. No-one commented I had the format syntax wrong. I've changed it but there may still be errors Assume datafile 1 a b c d etc... • To implement a remote desktop sharing solution

  Hi, I'm on planning/modeling phase to develop a remote desktop sharing solution, which must be web browser based. In other words: an user will be able to see and interact with someone's remote desktop using his web-browser. Everything the user who wants to share his desktop will need, besides his browser, is installing an add-in, which he's going to be prompted about when necessary. The add-in is required since (afaik) no browser technology allows desktop control from an app running within the browser alone. The add-in installation process must be as simple and transparent as possible to the user (similar to AdobeConnectNow, in case anyone's acquainted with it). The user can share his desktop with lots of people at the same time, but concede desktop control to only one of them at a time(makes no sense being otherwise). Project requirements: All technology employed must be open-source license compatible Both front ends are going to be in flash (browser) Must work on Linux, Windows XP(and later) and MacOSX. Must work at least with IE7(and later) and Firefox3.0(and later). At the very least, once the sharer's stream hits the server from where it'll be broadcast, hereon it must be broadcasted in flv (so I'm thinking whether to do the encoding at the client's machine (the one sharing the desktop) or send it in some other format to the server and encode it there). Performance and scalability are important: It must be able to handle hundreds of dozens of users(one desktop sharer, the rest viewers) We'll definitely be using red5. My doubts concern mostly implementing the desktop publisher side (add-in and streamer): 1) Are you aware of other projects that I could look into for ideas? (I'm aware of bigbluebutton.org and code.google.com/p/openmeetings) 2) Should I base myself on VNC ? 3) Bearing in mind the need to have it working cross-platform, what language should I go with? (My team is very used with java and I have some knowledge of C/C++, but anything goes really). 4) Any other advices are appreciated.

• What are salesforce.com and Apex like as an application development platform?

  I have recently discovered that salesforce.com is much more than an online CRM after coming across a Morrison's Case Study in which they develop a works management application. I've been trying it out with a view to recreating our own Works Management system on the platform. My background is in Microsoft and .Net, and the obvious 1st choice would be asp.net. However, there's only really myself with .net experience and my manager with a more legacy Synergy programming background, and I am self taught and am looking at evaluating other RAD options (eg Ironspeed). the nature of the business is in the main 2-5 concurrent construction type contracts that run for 3-5 yrs each, each requiring 15-50 system users. Traditionally we have used our character based Works Mangement system for everything and tweaked it for each contract. The Salesforce licensing model on the face of it suits this sort of flexibilty, but I'm worried about the development flexibilty/learning curve and all the issues that surround lock-in. There doesn't seem to be much neutral sober analysis of the platform on the web that isn't salesforce's own material/blogs Has anyone any experience of developing an application on salesforce as compared to the more 'traditional' .Net route?

• gevent urllib is slow

  I've created a set of demos of a TCP server however my gevent examples are noticely slower. I'm sure must be how I compiled gevent but can't work out the problem. I'm using OSX leopard using fink compiled python 2.6 and 2.7. I've tried both the stable gevent and gevent 1.0b1 and it acts the same. The echo takes 5 seconds to respond, where the other examples take <1sec. If I remove the urllib call then the problem goes away.   I have a website that will have millions of pages in a directory. I'd like to store those files on-disk in a bunch of subdirectories based on the first characters of the page name. For example http://mysite.com/hugedir/somefile.html would be stored in /var/www/html/hugedir/s/o/m/e/f/ile.html That is fairly trivial to do with a RewriteRule like so: RewriteRule ^hugedir/(.)(.)(.)(.)(.)(.*).html /hugedir/{$1}/{$2}/{$3}/{$4}/{$5}/$6.html RewriteRule ^hugedir/(.)(.)(.)(.)(.*).html /hugedir/{$1}/{$2}/{$3}/{$4}/{$5}.html RewriteRule ^hugedir/(.)(.)(.)(.*).html /hugedir/{$1}/{$2}/{$3}/{$4}.html RewriteRule ^hugedir/(.)(.)(.*).html /hugedir/{$1}/{$2}/{$3}.html RewriteRule ^hugedir/(.)(.*).html /hugedir/{$1}/{$2}.html RewriteRule ^hugedir/(.*).html /hugedir/{$1}.html However, the file name may contain hyphens or other non-standard characters and I'd really like to avoid having a directory named with a strange character. Or something else equivalent? Part of the requirement is that these be physical files on disk and it not be parsed with a scripting language.

• Cannot display converted value inside xml field

  PS: My bad, there was not an error. I forgot to upload the latest version to the server... I have multimedias and images table. I save images in multimedias table with their images table id numbers. Then whenever I need image's url, with a simple function I get it from images table. The problem I am having is when I try to display image's url inside ImageURL, it just does not happen.   Hi... I am sending an Ajax Request using jQuery. What happens is that I am getting an "405 Method Not Allowed" Error. I am just posting a form, which would get the detail from the form and insert it into the DB. Just the usual stuff.I am using WEBrick that comes as default with the rails package. • What are these stray zero-byte files extracted from tarball? (OSX)

  I'm extracting a folder from a tarball, and I see these zero-byte files showing up in the result (where they are not in the source.) Setup (all on OS X): On machine one, I have a directory /My/Stuff/Goes/Here/ containing several hundred files. I build it like this tar -cZf mystuff.tgz /My/Stuff/Goes/Here/ On machine two, I scp the tgz file to my local directory, then unpack it. tar -xZf mystuff.tgz It creates ~scott/My/Stuff/Goes/, but then under Goes, I see two files: Here/ - a directory, Here.bGd - a zero byte file. The "Here.bGd" zero-byte file has a random 3-character suffix, mixed upper and lower-case characters. It has the same name as the lowest-level directory mentioned in the tar-creation command. It only appears at the lowest level directory named. Anybody know where these come from, and how I can adjust my tar creation to get rid of them? Update: I checked the table of contents on the files using tar tZvf: toc does not list the zero-byte files, so I'm leaning toward the suggestion that the uncompress machine is at fault. OS X is version 10.5.5 on the unzip machine (not sure how to check the filesystem type). Tar is GNU tar 1.15.1, and it came with the machine.

  I have a WCF REST Starter Kit service. The type handled by the service is a subclass of a base class. For POST requests, the base class members are not correctly populated. • C#: socket closing if user user exists

  Hi to everyone I'm trying to create a server/client application for a school project. This is the scenario: a server on a given port, multiple user connected, each user has it's own username. Now I want to check if a user that try to connect to the user use a valid username, for example if a user with username A it's already connected a new user that want to connect cannot use the username A. If this happen the server answer to the new client with an error code. • Do I need to Salt and Hash a randomly generated token?

  I'm using Adam Griffiths's Authentication Library for CodeIgniter and I'm tweaking the usermodel. I came across a generate function that he uses to generate tokens. His preferred approach is to reference a value from random.org but I considered that superfluous. I'm using his fall back approach of randomly generating a 20 character long string: $length = 20; $characters = '0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ'; $token = ''; for ($i = 0; $i < $length; $i++) { $token .= $characters[mt_rand(0, strlen($characters)-1)]; } He then hashes this token using a salt (I'm combing code from different functions) sha1($this->CI->config->item('encryption_key').$str); I was wondering if theres any reason to to run the token through the salted hash? I've read that simply randomly generating strings was a naive way of making random passwords but is the sh1 hash and salt necessary? Note: I got my encryption_key from https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm (63 random alpha-numeric)

  I have an XML file that needs parsing in PHP. I am currenlty using simplexml_load_file to load the file like so: $xml = simplexml_load_file('Project.xml'); Inside that XML file lies a structure like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <project> <name>Project 1</name> <features> <feature>Feature 1</feature> <feature>Feature 2</feature> <feature>Feature 3</feature> <feature>Feature 4</feature> </features> </project> What I am trying to do is print the <name> contents along with EACH <feature> element within <features>. I'm not sure how to do this because there is more than 1 element called <feature>. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Android game logic problem

  I'm currently creating a game and have a problem which I think I know why it is occurring but not entirely sure and even if I knew, don't know how to solve. I have a 2D array 10 x 10 and have a "player" class that takes up a tile. Now, I have created 2 instances of the player and move them around via swiping. Around the edges I have put "walls" that the player cannot walk through and everything works fine, until I remove a wall. Once I remove a wall and move the character/player to the edge of the screen, the player cannot go any further. The problem occurs here, where the second instance of the player is not at the edge of the screen but say 2 tiles from the first instance of "player" who is at the edge. If I try moving them further into the direction of the edge, I understand that the first instance of player wouldn't move or do anything but the second instance of player should still move, but it won't.
