• monotouch 2d pixel with correct resolution

  I am writing up a game that is size sensitive. It needs to be pixel perfect. I believe the resolution is 480x320 pixels with the iphone being twice the width and height. My code is grid based with images exactly 16x16pixels. I found samples of opengl in the past but I never found any good tutorial that had 0,0 the top left and was the correct size in resolution (which made images look terrible) What can I use? I'd like to write the code in C# (or C++ but C# is preferred) and use monotouch. I don't know any libraries for 2d graphics. I'll figure out sound and such afterwards and I seen documentation on monotouch for input.

• How can I copy/paste files via RDP in Kubuntu?

  I recently installed the latest Kubuntu (x64) on my work machine as I am trying to migrate away from Windows. Unfortunately I use RDP very frequently to connect to customer's servers and need to be able to copy files across. I have tried the following packages with no luck: remmina rdesktop xfreerdp My latest attempt to solve this involved connecting one of my folders to the remote server, here is the command I used to launch rdesktop: rdesktop -5 -K -r disk:home=/home/dai -r clipboard:CLIPBOARD -r sound:off -x l -P 192.168.0.2 -u "administrator" -p pass The servers are not all running the same version of Windows, the one I've been trying so far is running Server 2003 R2. Customer servers range from Server 2000 to Server 2008. I've been Googling this like mad but all the solutions I find seem to fail, maybe because almost all the help out there assumes that I'm running Gnome. Sorry if this is a stupid question. Thanks in advance for your help. Edit: Copying and pasting text seems to work just fine, but that's not what I need.

I have run these commands: sudo umount /media/Tal sudo mount -t ntfs-3g -o uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=0000 /dev/sdb1 /media/Tal rdesktop -0 -r sound:local -f -u administrator -r clipboard:PRIMARYCLIPBOARD -r disk:tal=/media/Tal myip Tal is external hard drive connecting at USB in ntfs file system. I connect to windows 7 I see the hard drive in computer and I can access to files and create new files and folders, But when I try to copy a new file to a folder he show me an error message: You need permission perform this action Your require permission from computer's administrator to make changes to this folder Tal on my computername Disk from Remote Desktop Connection. I try chmod and chown too but I read I linux forum when it ntfs is no use. Some one can help me with my problem?

• Getting Started with 2d Game Dev (C++): DirectX or OpenGL?

  So, i'm a student looking to get my foot in the door of game development and im looking to do something 2D, maybe a tetris/space invaders/something-with-a-little-mouse-interaction clone. I pointed my searches in the direction of C++ and 2d and was eventually lead to DirectX/OpenGL Now as i understand it, all these packages will do for me is draw stuff on a screen. And thats all i really care about at this point. Sound isn't necessary. Input can be handled with stdlib probably. So, for a beginner trying to create a basic game in C++, would you recommend DirectX or OpenGL? Why? What are some key feature differences between the two? Which is more usable?

I am now working on a project where we are limited to .Net 2.0 and Visual Studio 2005. I liked the clean separation of concerns when working with ASP.Net MVC, and am looking for something to make webforms less unbearable. Are there any recommended patterns or practices for people who prefer asp.net MVC, but are stuck on .net 2.0 and visual studio 2005?

• OpenGL: Filtering/antialising textures in a 2D game

  I'm working on a 2D game using OpenGL 1.5 that uses rather large textures. I'm seeing aliasing effects and am wondering how to tackle those. I'm finding lots of material about antialiasing in 3D games, but I don't see how most of that applies to 2D games - e.g. antisoptric filtering seems to make no sense, FSAA doesn't sound like the best bet either. I suppose this means texture filtering is my best option? Right now I'm using bilinear filtering, I think: glTexParameterf(GL_TEXTURE_2D, GL_TEXTURE_MIN_FILTER, GL_LINEAR); glTexParameterf(GL_TEXTURE_2D, GL_TEXTURE_MAG_FILTER, GL_LINEAR); From what I've read, I'd have to use mipmaps to use trilinear filtering, which would drive memory usage up, so I'd rather not. I know the final sizes of all the textures when they are loaded, so can't I somehow size them correctly at that point? (Using some form of texture filtering).

  Would simply using AWS to build an application make this application a distributed system? For example if someone uses RDS for the database server, EC2 for the application itself and S3 for hosting user uploaded media, does that make it a distributed system? If not, then what should it be called and what is this application lacking for it to be distributed? Update Here is my take on the application to clarify my approach to building the system: The application I'm building is a social game for Facebook. I developed the application locally on a LAMP stack using Symfony2. For production I used an a single EC2 Micro instance for hosting the app itself, RDS for hosting my database, S3 for the user uploaded files and CloudFront for hosting static content. I know this may sound like a naive approach, so don't be shy to express your ideas.

• Publish/Subscribe/Request for exchange of big, complex, and confidential data?

  I am working on a project where a website needs to exchange complex and confidential (and thus encrypted) data with other systems. The data includes personal information, technical drawings, public documents etc. We would prefer to avoid the Request-Reply pattern to the dependent systems (and there are a LOT of them), as that would create an awful lot of empty traffic. On the other hand, I am not sure that a pure Publisher/Subscriber pattern would be apropriate -- mainly because of the complex and bulky nature of the data to be exchanged. For that reason we have discussed the possibility of a "publish/subscribe/request" solution. The Publish/Subscribe part would be to publish a message to the dependent systems, that something is ready for pickup. The actual content is then picked up by old-school Request-Reply action.   In Windows my dad used to have a program called MP3 Tunes. I have tried running it with Wine, and it worked. But strange things kept happening to the program, so it's not a reliable way to play music. Basically I just want to have 2 players (in a single window) with these features: Preloading tracks in a player without immediately starting them. Fading from one track to the other. A timer on each player. These features are also desired, but not required: Microphone input. Prelistening before loading a song in a player (through a seperate sound card). Pitch/Tempo control. Just being able to browse folders in the filesystem (without things like a music library). Here are some screenshots of the program to clarify what I'm looking for:

A bigger studio saw our work and now they want to work with us; they need people to develop mobile games for them (iOS, Android). They want us to set the price for the projects (can't tell the specifics we signed a NDA). They will give us all the assets (graphics/sound) so we only have to code.   I had problems with my movie player. The sound was fine but the picture seemed to hesitate or stick or pause every few seconds so I was looking for some help on how to do this. I tried to install a command in the terminal and got this message: E:Malformed line 68 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse) Can someone tell me how to fix this problem. I cannot open the software center or the update manager. The only other option I can think of is to wipe everything out and do a clean install. Thank you.

• Ubuntu 10.10 freezes

  Hi, I have the following configuration: CPU: amd athlon 64bit Motherboard: Phoenix with awardBIOS v6.0 APIC mode = disabled Video card: GeForce 5500 Sound card: soundblaster live 24bit RAM: 1.5GB Partitions: ext3 32GB where I installed Ubuntu. Swap 500MB. 180GB Fat32 unmounted. contains data only. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 and used the "Additional driver" program to get the nVidia proprietary drivers. The system works for sometime and randomly freezes. The mouse and keyboard are not responding and I am not able to do a SSH. The only solution is pressing the power button. I tried Kubuntu 10.10 and 32/64-bits versions as well. There is nothing in the logs to suggest what the reason might be. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• How do I install third-party rhythmbox plugins?

  Now that the dust has settled and Rhythmbox has become (again) the default music-media player in 12.04, I'm interested in extending its functionality. For example, the default lyric plugin does not work for me and there doesn't appear to be an sound-equalizer by default. Having done a search, I came across the Gnome-website that lists a number of third-party plugins, some-of which I wish to install which can resolve the above. However, there doesn't appear to be .deb packages or a repository containing these plugins. Instead there are links to source-code websites such as GitHub and others. So, I'm confused - I don't know which plugins works in 12.04 Rhythmbox and I'm not sure how to install these. Help please?

  I am reading about Alistair Cockburn's Hexagonal Architecture http://alistair.cockburn.us/Hexagonal+architecture with interest. One claim he makes is: "Finally, the automated function regression tests detect any violation of the promise to keep business logic out of the presentation layer. The organization can detect, and then correct, the logic leak." I do not understand this point. Is he saying that because the test is headless, then calls to a ui layer will throw exceptions? That doesn't seem to be a very sound test!
