  • Whats the deal with python?

    My interests in programming lie mainly in algorithms, and lately I have seen many reputable researchers write a lot of their code in python. How easy and convenient is python for scientific computing? Does it have a library of algorithms that compares to matlab's? Is Python a scripting language or does it compile? Is it a great language for prototyping an algorithm? How long would it take me to learn enough of it to be productive provided I know C well and OO programming somewhat? Is it OO based? Sorry for the condensed format of questions, but I'm very curious and was hoping a more experienced programmer could help me out.

For example, I want to match all users except #9 against #9 to see which of the IDs in the "following_list" column they have in common. I found a way of doing this through the "SET" datatype and some bit trickery: http://dev.mysql.com/tech-resources/articles/mysql-set-datatype.html#bits However, I need to do this on an arbitrary list of IDs.   • How to? - part of the site over ssl, other part not

    What is common practice for coding web applications where part of the site has to be secured (e.g. checkout section) and part not necessarily, lets say homepage. As far as I know sharing sessions in between http and https parts of the site is not easily possible (or is it?). What would be common approach if I wanted to display on http page like homepage, shopping cart data (items) that users ordered on https pages? How those two parts of the site would communicate if necessary? Also isn't it security flaw in popular shopping carts as it seems that many of these have only checkout pages secured (ssl) and the rest not? I'm using php if it makes any difference.

  • Problem when reading backslash in Prolog

    I'm writing a lexer in Prolog which will be used as a part of functional language interpreter. Language spec allows expressions like for example let \x = x + 2; to occur. What I want lexer to do for such input is to "return": [tokLet, tokLambda, tokVar(x), tokEq, tokVar(x), tokPlus, tokNumber(2), tokSColon] and the problem is, that Prolog seems to ignore the \ character and "returns" the line written above except for tokLambda. One approach to solve this would be to somehow add second backslash before/after every occurrence of one in the program code (because everything works fine if I change the original input to let \\x = x + 2;) but I don't really like it. Any ideas?

  • Does lookaround affect which languages can be matched by regular expressions?

    There are some features in modern regex engines which allow you to match languages that couldn't be matched without that feature. For example the following regex using back references matches the language of all strings that consist of a word that repeats itself: (.+)\1. This language is not regular and can't be matched by a regex, which does not use back references. My question: Does lookaround also affect which languages can be matched by a regular expression? I.e. are there any languages that can be matched using lookaround, which couldn't be matched otherwise? If so, is this true for all flavors of lookaround (negative or positive lookahead or lookbehind) or just for some of them?

  • Do you know of a good program for editing/translating resource (.rc) files?

    I'm building a C++/MFC program in a multilingual environment. I have one main (national) language and three international languages. Every time I add a feature to the program I have to keep the international languages up-to-date with the national one. The resource editor in Visual Studio is not very helpful because I frequently end up leaving a string, dialog box, etc., untranslated. I wonder if you guys know of a program that can edit resource (.rc) files and Build a file that includes only the strings to be translated and their respective IDs and accepts the same (or similar) file in another language (this would be helpful since usually the translation is done by someone else), or Handle the translations itself, allowing to view the same string in different languages at the same time.

  • Selecting item from set given distribution

    I have a set of X items such as {blower, mower, stove} and each item has a certain percentage of times it should be selected from the overall set {blower=25%,mower=25%,stove=75%} along with a certain distribution that these items should follow (blower should be selected more at the beginning of selection and stove more at the end). We are given a number of objects to be overall selected (ie 100) and a overall time to do this in (say 100 seconds). I was thinking of using a roulette wheel algorithm where the weights on the wheel are affected by the current distribution as a function of the elapsed time (and the allowed duration) so that simple functions could be used to determine the weight. Are there any common approaches to problems like this that anyone is aware of? Currently i have programmed something similar to this in java using functions such as x^2 (with correct normalization for the weights) to ensure that a good distribution occurs. Other suggestions or common practices would be welcome :-)

  • C# programmer - necessary to learn C/C++?

    Hey, I have been programming now for a couple of years. But never any low level language. I started off with some java and some VB. Then I went over to VB.NET and now for a while I have been writing C#. As you see, I have never written any low level language where I had to deal with memory management. Is this something I should do, like a route of passage that every programmer should go through? I am a bit keen on trying to perhaps writing in assembler directly. This would suit me personally good as I have 2 parents that have been writing assembler for ages. Is it necessary for a professional programmer these days to know how to manually manage memory?

  • Visual studio 2010 colourizers, intellisense and the rest. Where to start!!

    Ok, before I begin I realize that there is a lot of documentation on this subject but I have thus far failed to get even basic colourization working for VS2010. My goal is to simply get to a point where I can open a document and everything is coloured red, from here I can implement the relevant parsing logic. Here's what I have tried/found: 1) Downloaded all the relevent SDK's and such- Found the ook sample (http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/ookLanguage) - didn't build, didn't work. 2) Knowing almost nothing about MEF read through "Implementing a Language Service By Using the Managed Package Framework" - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb166533(v=VS.100).aspx This was pretty much a copy and paste of all the basic stuff here, and also updating some references which were out of date with the sample see: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vsx/thread/a310fe67-afd2-4592-b295-3fc86fec7996 Now, I have got to a point where when running the package MEF appears to have hooked up correctly (I know this because with the debugger open I can see that the packages initialize and FDoIdle methods are being hit). When I open a file of the extension I have registered with the ProvideLanguageExtensionAttribute everything dies as if in an endless loop, yet no debug symbols hit (though they are loaded). Looking at the ook sample and the MEF examples they seem to be totally different approaches to the same problem. In the ook sample there are notions of Clasifications and Completion controllers which aren't mentioned in the MEF example. Also, they don't seem to create a Package or Language service, so I have no idea how it should work? With the MEF example, my assumption is that I need to hook into the "IScanner.ScanTokenAndProvideInfoAboutIt" to provide syntax highlighting? Which would be fine if I could ever hit this method. So my first question I guess is which approach should I be taking here? Or do they both somehow tie together? My second questions is, where can I find a basic fully working project that implements bog standard basic syntax highlighting and intellisense or VS2010? Thirdly, in the MEF example when I created a Package there were a bunch of test projects created for me. I appears that the integration tests launch the VS2010 test rig somehow, but the test fails. It would be good to write my service with tests but I have no idea what/how I can test each interaction so any references to testing Language services would be helpful.     So I have my rails application and I have blog posts in my application. For starters I am on rails 2.3.5 and Ruby 1.8.7 For the show page, I am required to give a prev/next link to the prev/next blog post. The catch is that I need to find the next blog where the language column in the database is equal to 'eng'. I had started writing this out in my model and it works but of course this will just find the prev/next record in the database no matter what the language is specified in the column and it will break when the record is not found. def next(lang='eng') BlogEntry.find(self.id - 1) end def prev(lang='eng') BlogEntry.find(self.id + 1) end

  • Creating a db driven primary navigation in django?

    I find that it's pretty common most people hardcode the navigation into their templates, but I'm dealing with a pretty dynamic news site which might be better off if the primary nav was db driven. So I was thinking of having a Navigation model where each row would be a link. link_id INT primary key link_name varchar(255) url varchar(255) order INT active boolean If anyone's done something similar in the past, would you say this sort of schema is good enough? I also wanted for there to be an optional dropdown in the admin near the url field so that a user could choose a Category model's slug since category links would be common, but I'm not quite sure how that would be possible.

    I can have a table and function defined as: CREATE TABLE mytable ( mycol integer ); INSERT INTO mytable VALUES (1); CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION myfunction (l_myvar integer) RETURNS mytable AS $$ DECLARE l_myrow mytable; BEGIN SELECT * INTO l_myrow FROM mytable WHERE mycol = l_myvar; RETURN l_myrow; END; $$ LANGUAGE plpgsql; In this case l_myvar acts as a bind variable for the value passed when I call: SELECT * FROM myfunction(1); and returns the row where mycol = 1 If I redefine the function as: CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION myfunction (l_myvar integer) RETURNS mytable AS $$ DECLARE l_myrow mytable; BEGIN SELECT * INTO l_myrow FROM mytable WHERE mycol IN (l_myvar); RETURN l_myrow; END; $$ LANGUAGE plpgsql; SELECT * FROM myfunction(1); still returns the row where mycol = 1 However, if I now change the function definition to allow me to pass an integer array and try to this array in the IN clause, I get an error: CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION myfunction (l_myvar integer[]) RETURNS mytable AS $$ DECLARE l_myrow mytable; BEGIN SELECT * INTO l_myrow FROM mytable WHERE mycol IN (array_to_string(l_myvar, ',')); RETURN l_myrow; END; $$ LANGUAGE plpgsql; Analysis reveals that although: SELECT array_to_string(ARRAY[1, 2], ','); returns 1,2 as expected SELECT * FROM myfunction(ARRAY[1, 2]); returns the error operator does not exist: integer = text at the line: WHERE mycol IN (array_to_string(l_myvar, ',')); If I execute: SELECT * FROM mytable WHERE mycol IN (1,2); I get the expected result. Given that array_to_string(l_myvar, ',') evaluates to 1,2 as shown, why arent these statements equivalent. From the error message it is something to do with datatypes, but doesnt the IN(variable) construct appear to be behaving differently from the = variable construct? What are the rules here? I know that I could build a statement to EXECUTE, treating everything as a string, to achieve what I want to do, so I am not looking for that as a solution. I do want to understand though what is going on in this example. Is there a modification to this approach to make it work, the particular example being to pass in an array of values to build a dynamic IN clause without resorting to EXECUTE?   • Architecture for multiple web apps and databases.

    We used to have only one web app, but now we are breaking it down into multiple ones. Each one will be packaged as separate product (web app) Some have things in common some do not. It was originally coded with php and using Postgresql 8.4 and CodeIgniter as the framework. I am looking for some good suggestions on how I should set up multiple web apps. They all have their own somewhat unique data. Some data in the databases can be common to some apps but not all. All the apps will be on one server and will have some kind of API to manipulate data. I want it to be structured such that one User account can access any product they purchase. (kinda like google accounts) I do not know if its a good idea to have multiple database, or just to have one big one. eventually we will be using S3 for some videos and other images. Your thoughts and suggestions are much appreciated.

  • How to structure web application with part of it being secured (SSL)

    What is the common pattern to structure web application where part of it has to be secured. So lets say I have page_a and page_b which do not need to be secured, although should display login information (login fields or login details once user logged in). This web app. also would have secured pages (admin, checkout or similar) secure_page_c and secure_page_d. My questions are: What is the common folder structure for such assuming I code in php with no frameworks? Also how shall I deal with session variables in case user navigates lets say from secure_page_b to non secure page_a or vice versa? What else might be a problem and should be considered when coding that kind of app in php? Thank you all for any suggestions

    Yes I know that it shouldn't be abused and that C# is primariy used as a static language. But seriously folks if you could just dirty up some code, in the python style, or create some dynamic do hicky, would you? My mind is working overtime on this having spent a while loving the dynamics of python, is c# going over to the dark side through the back door? Is the argument for static typing a dead one with this obvious addition? Is the argument for less Unit testing a bit silly when we are all grown ups? Or has the addition of dynamics ruined a strongly static typed and well designed language?
