  I need to store a undirected graph in a Google App Engine database. For optimization purposes, I am thinking to use database indexes. Using Google App Engine, is there any way to define the columns of a database table to create its index? I will need some optimization, since my app uses this stored undirected graph on a content-based filtering for item recommendation. Also, the recommender algorithm updates the weights of some graph's edges. If it is not possible to use database indexes, please suggest another method to reduce query time for the graph table. I believe my algorithm does more data retrieval operations from graph table than write operations. PS: I am using Python.

• Ambiguous Evaluation of Lambda Expression on Array

  I would like to use a lambda that adds one to x if x is equal to zero. I have tried the following expressions: t = map(lambda x: x+1 if x==0 else x, numpy.array) t = map(lambda x: x==0 and x+1 or x, numpy.array) t = numpy.apply_along_axis(lambda x: x+1 if x==0 else x, 0, numpy.array) Each of these expressions returns the following error: ValueError: The truth value of an array with more than one element is ambiguous. Use a.any() or a.all() My understanding of map() and numpy.apply_along_axis() was that it would take some function and apply it to each value of an array. From the error it seems that the the lambda is being evaluated as x=array, not some value in array. What am I doing wrong? I know that I could write a function to accomplish this but I want to become more familiar with the functional programming aspects of python.

• How do I redirect stdin/stdout when I have a sequence of commands in Bash?

  I've currently got a Bash command being executed (via Python's subprocess::Popen) which is reading from stdin, doing something and outputing to stdout. Something along the lines of: pid = subprocess.Popen( ["-c", "cmd1 | cmd2"], stdin = subprocess.PIPE, stdout = subprocess.PIPE, shell =True ) output_data = pid.communicate( "input data\n" ) Now, what I want to do is to change that to execute another command in that same subshell that will alter the state before the next commands execute, so my shell command line will now (conceptually) be: cmd0; cmd1 | cmd2 Is there any way to have the input sent to cmd1 instead of cmd0 in this scenario? I'm assuming the output will include cmd0's output (which will be empty) followed by cmd2's output. cmd0 shouldn't actually read anything from stdin, does that make a difference in this situation? I know this is probably just a dumb way of doing this, I'm trying to patch in cmd0 without altering the other code too significantly. That said, I'm open to suggestions if there's a much cleaner way to approach this.

• Can django lazy-load fields in a model?

  One of my django models has a large TextField which I often don't need to use. Is there a way to tell django to "lazy-load" this field? i.e. not to bother pulling it from the database unless I explicitly ask for it. I'm wasting a lot of memory and bandwidth pulling this TextField into python every time I refer to these objects. The alternative would be to create a new table for the contents of this field, but I'd rather avoid that complexity if I can.

• Yet another C# Deadlock Debugging Question

  Hi All, I have a multi-threaded application build in C# using VS2010 Professional. It's quite a large application and we've experienced the classing GUI cross-threading and deadlock issues before, but in the past month we've noticed the appears to lock up when left idle for around 20-30 minutes. The application is irresponsive and although it will repaint itself when other windows are dragged in front of the application and over it, the GUI still appears to be locked... interstingly (unlike if the GUI thread is being used for a considerable amount of time) the Close, Maximise and minimise buttons are also irresponsive and when clicked the little (Not Responding...) text is not displayed in the title of the application i.e. Windows still seems to think it's running fine. If I break/pause the application using the debugger, and view the threads that are running. There are 3 threads of our managed code that are running, and a few other worker threads whom the source code cannot be displayed for. The 3 threads that run are: The main/GUI thread A thread that loops indefinitely A thread that loops indefinitely If I step into threads 2 and 3, they appear to be looping correctly. They do not share locks (even with the main GUI thread) and they are not using the GUI thread at all. When stepping into the main/GUI thread however, it's broken on Application.Run... This problem screams deadlock to me, but what I don't understand is if it's deadlock, why can't I see the line of code the main/GUI thread is hanging on? Any help will be greatly appreciated! Let me know if you need more information... Thanks to everyone for their suggestions! Much appreciated! I've marked the answer that solved my initial problem of determining where on the main/UI thread the application hangs (I handn't turned off the "Enable Just My Code" option). The overall issue I was experiencing was indeed Deadlock, however. After obtaining the call-stack and popping the top half of it into Google I came across this which explains exactly what I was experiencing... http://timl.net/ This references a lovely guide to debugging the issue... http://www.aaronlerch.com/blog/2008/12/15/debugging-ui/ This identified a control I was constructing off the GUI thread. I did know this, however, and was marshalling calls correctly, but what I didn't realise was that behind the scenes this Control was subscribing to an event or set of events that are triggered when e.g. a Windows session is unlocked or the screensaver exits. These calls are always made on the main/UI thread and were blocking when it saw the call was made on the incorrect thread. Kim explains in more detail here... http://krgreenlee.blogspot.com/2007/09/onuserpreferencechanged-hang.html In the end I found an alternative solution which did not require this Control off the main/UI thread. That appears to have solved the problem and the application no longer hangs. I hope this helps anyone who's confronted by a similar problem. Thanks again to everyone on here who helped! Roo -----------------------------------------------------SOLUTION II-------------------------------------------------- Aren't threading issues delightful...you think you've solved it, and a month down the line it pops back up again. I still believe the solution above resolved an issue that would cause simillar behaviour, but we encountered the problem again. As we spent a while debugging this, I thought I'd update this question with our (hopefully) final solution: The problem appears to have been a bug in the Infragistics components in the WinForms 2010.1 release (no hot fixes). We had been running from around the time the freeze issue appeared (but had also added a bunch of other stuff too). After upgrading to WinForms 2010.3, we've yet to reproduce the issue (deja vu). See my question here for a bit more information: 'http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4077822/net-4-0-and-the-dreaded-onuserpreferencechanged-hang'. Hans has given a nice summary of the general issue. • How to wrap Plone authentication around a third-party servlet?

  We're using Plone to serve up some third-party middle-ware. Unfortunately the middle-ware has a particular servlet that gets invoked from a Java applet and doesn't do any kind of authentication. I would like to firewall this off and somehow wrap authentication around it, preferably using the existing session that users will have on Plone. My first idea was to configure nginx (which we're using as the reverse proxy) to check the cookie and only proxy if the user has a valid session (along the lines of this example). However, how to check the session ID against Plone, since it's all stored in the Zope database? Alternatively we could have a Plone python script that basically passes everything along to the back-end after authenticating, but I'm not sure how to do that. Any suggestions? Or alternative ideas?

• Getting pixel averages of a vector sitting atop a bitmap...

  I'm currently involved in a hardware project where I am mapping triangular shaped LED to traditional bitmap images. I'd like to overlay a triangle vector onto an image and get the average pixel data within the bounds of that vector. However, I'm unfamiliar with the math needed to calculate this. Does anyone have an algorithm or a link that could send me in the right direction? (I tagged this as Python, which is preferred, but I'd be happy with the general algorithm!)   Hello all, I'm writing a CLI for a music-media-platform. One of the features is going to be that you can directly play YouTube videos from the CLI. I don't really have an idea to do it but this one sounded the most reasonable: I'm going to use of those sites where you can download music from YouTube, e.g. http://keepvid.com/ - then I directly stream & play this -- but I have one problem. • Using Property Builtin with GAE Datastore's Model

  I want to make attributes of GAE Model properties. The reason is for cases like to turn the value into uppercase before storing it. For a plain Python class, I would do something like: Foo(db.Model): def get_attr(self): return self.something def set_attr(self, value): self.something = value.upper() if value != None else None attr = property(get_attr, set_attr) However, GAE Datastore have their own concept of Property class, I looked into the documentation and it seems that I could override get_value_for_datastore(model_instance) to achieve my goal. Nevertheless, I don't know what model_instance is and how to extract the corresponding field from it. Is overriding GAE Property classes the right way to provides getter/setter-like functionality? If so, how to do it? Added: One potential issue of overriding get_value_for_datastore that I think of is it might not get called before the object was put into datastore. Hence getting the attribute before storing the object would yield an incorrect value.

Noting that only the first kiss requires the alternation, any kiss that is not a part of the chain due to the first kiss can very well have a hug on the 2nd next person, this is the code I have come up with. This is just a simple mathematical calculation, no looping, no iteration, nothing. But still I am getting a timed-out message. • Extracting Information from Images

  What are some fast and somewhat reliable ways to extract information about images? I've been tinkering with openCV and this seems so far to be the best route plus it has Python bindings. So to be more specific I'd like to determine what I can about what's in an image. So for example the haar face detection and full body detection classifiers are great - now I can tell that most likely there are faces and / or people in the image as well as about how many. okay - what else - how about whether there are any buildings and if so what do they seem to be - huts, office buildings etc? Is there sky visible, grass, trees and so forth. From what I've read about training classifiers to detect objects, it seems like a rather laborious process 10,000 or so wrong images and 5,000 or so correct samples to train a classifier. I'm hoping that there are some decent ones around already instead of having to do this all myself for a bunch of different objects - or is there some other way to go about this sort of thing?

How can I join the second url in the second tuple together with the urljoin() function? • set / line intersection solution

  I have two lists in python and I want to know if they intersect at the same index. Is there a mathematical way of solving this? For example if I have [9,8,7,6,5] and [3,4,5,6,7] I'd like a simple and efficient formula/algorithm that finds that at index 3 they intersect. I know I could do a search just wondering if there is a better way. I know there is a formula to solve two lines in y = mx + b form by subtracting them from each other but my "line" isn't truly a line because its limited to the items in the list and it may have curves. Any help is appreciated.

• Open Source CMS with linked sub-sections and users

  I work at a small college that wants to make "sites" for all of the academic departments (~30). I managed to talk them out of their original idea: 30 individual Wordpress installations. What a maintenance nightmare! What I'm looking for is a CMS (preferably Python or PHP, as those are my areas of expertise) that can automagically create a subsection (or subsite, whatever the appropriate vernacular) complete with user and a couple of headings based on a template. So, I could just click a button and have a new subsection for a new department complete with its own authorized user, and default subsection headings/menu/pages. Is this just wishful thinking? I don't mind getting my hands dirty (this would be the whole of my job duties), so what platform would be a good starting point for something like this? Open source is a must for me as I have literally no budget, and I'm probably going to have to dig pretty deep into the application.

• Dynamic resize with MPlayer and PyGTK

  Hi everyone; I've wrote a piece of code in python and pygtk for an embeded mplayer in a gui. I assume I use GtkSocket and the slave mode of mplayer with the -wid option. But I've got an issue, when the size of my GTK window is smaller than my stream, the stream appears to be cropped. And when the size of my window is bigger than my stream, the stream appear centred inside the widget which embed MPlayer. (a gtk.Frame but I've also try with a gtk.DrawingArea) I would like to know how I can get my stream resize dynamically depending on the window's size. I don't want to use Glade or any GUI builder. The problem is that printing the value sum_tot_time it appear as an integer or long, by the way without its decimal part!   I am pretty much interested into using the newly enhanced Parallelism features in .NET 4.0. I have also seen some possibilities of using it in F#, as much as in C#. Despite, I can only see what PLINQ has to offer with, for example, the following: var query = from c in Customers.AsParallel() where (c.Name.Contains("customerNameLike") select c; There must for sure be some other use of this parallelism thing. Have you any other examples of using it? Is this particularly turned toward PLINQ, or are there other usage as easy as PLINQ? Thanks! =)
