• Permutations distinct under given symmetry (Mathematica 8 group theory)

  Given a list of integers like {2,1,1,0} I'd like to list all permutations of that list that are not equivalent under given group. For instance, using symmetry of the square, the result would be {{2, 1, 1, 0}, {2, 1, 0, 1}}. Approach below (Mathematica 8) generates all permutations, then weeds out the equivalent ones. I can't use it because I can't afford to generate all permutations, is there a more efficient way? Update: actually, the bottleneck is in DeleteCases. The following list {2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0, 0} has about a million permutations and takes 0.1 seconds to compute. • Writing my own implementation of stl-like Iterator in C++.

  Good evening everybody, I'm currently trying to understand the intrinsics of iterators in various languages i.e. the way they are implemented. For example, there is the following class exposing the list interface. template<class T> class List { public: virtual void Insert( int beforeIndex, const T item ) throw( ListException ) =0 ; virtual void Append( const T item ) =0; virtual T Get( int position ) const throw( ListException ) =0; virtual int GetLength() const =0; virtual void Remove( int position ) throw( ListException ) =0; virtual ~List() =0 {}; }; According to GoF, the best way to implement an iterator that can support different kinds of traversal is to create the base Iterator class (friend of List) with protected methods that can access List's members. The concrete implementations of Iterator will handle the job in different ways and access List's private and protected data through the base interface. From here forth things are getting confusing. Say, I have class LinkedList and ArrayList, both derived from List, and there are also corresponding iterators, each of the classes returns. How can I implement LinkedListIterator? I'm absolutely out of ideas. And what kind of data can the base iterator class retrieve from the List (which is a mere interface, while the implementations of all the derived classes differ significantly) ?   Hi all, I"m having some problems with Nhibernate and native sql. I've got an entity with alot of collections and I am doing an SQL Fulltext search on it. So when returning 100 or so entities, I dont want all collections be lazy loaded. In this case I thought I could use the DistinctRootEntityResultTransformer. var items = GetCurrentSession() .CreateSQLQuery(query) .AddEntity("spr", typeof(Customer)) .AddJoin("adr", "spr.addresses") .AddJoin("adrt", "adr.Type") .AddJoin("cty", "adr.City") .AddJoin("com", "spr.communicationItems") .AddJoin("comt", "com.Type") .SetResultTransformer(new DistinctRootEntityResultTransformer()) .List<Customer>(); Doing so an exception is thrown. This is because I try to list customers .List<Customer>() but the transformer returns only entities of the last join added. E.g. in the case above, the entity with alias "comt" is returned when doing .List() instead of .List(). If I would switch last join with the join alias "cty", then the transformer returns a list of cities only... Anyone knows how I can return a clean list of customers in this case?

Mystruct *InitStruct is a function that initializes a Mystruct pointer and void *Retrieve is a function that returns a pointer to the element stored at a given index. First, how should I initialize void* list? Should it hold the actual elements or be an array of pointers pointing to the elements? Second, using the void *Retrieve function, how do I return a pointer to the element stored at a given index in my-list?

• A* PathFinding Poor Performance

  After debugging for a few hours, the algorithm seems to be working. Right now to check if it works i'm checking the end node position to the currentNode position when the while loop quits. So far the values look correct. The problem is, the farther I get from the NPC, who is current stationary, the worse the performance gets. It gets to a point where the game is unplayable less than 10 fps. My current PathGraph is 2500 nodes, which I believe is pretty small, right? • How to create a new Team Project Collection in TFS2010:

  TFS 2010 has introduced the notion of Team Project Collection (TPC).  I have already discussed about TPC in my earlier post, you can check it out here. In this post, I will demonstrate how to create a new Team Project Collection in TFS2010. First, you have to open the TFS Administration Console (Start à All Programs à Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010 à Team Foundation Server Administration Console), expand the Application Tier node in TFS Administration Console and click on Team Project Collection. Here you will see the TPC’s which are already exist, I am having only one TPC named New Collection and I’m going to create a new TPC called Demo Collection. To create a new Team Project Collection, you need to click on Create Collection; it will open the Create New Team Project Collection window.     Under the Name tab, you have to enter the name of Collection which you want to give for your new TPC (I naming it as Demo Collection). You can also provide some description about your TPC in Description tab which is optional and click next. Here, you need to enter the name of SQL Server Instance where you want your new TPC data to reside. You have the option either to choose the creating a Database for this TPC or use the already existing empty database and then click next.   In next screen, you have to choose SharePoint configuration. Here you have the options to either configure SharePoint Site for TPC at default collections or you can specify the your existing SharePoint site and  you can also choose not  to configure the SharePoint for this collection, if you choose last option then you cannot configure the Share Point sites for the all the Team Projects under this Project Collection. You also have the flexibility to create a Share Point site for this TPC later on, then if you need you have to configure SharePoint site for the existing team projects manually.   In next screen, you will have the Reports configuration. Here you have the options to either configure the Reports for TPC at default path or you can specify the path for at existing Reports folder, you can also choose not to configure the Reports for this collection, if you choose last option then you cannot create  the Reports  for the all the Team Projects under this Project Collection. Here also you can enable reporting for this TPC later on. The next screen is related to Lab Management Configuration, Lab Management is the new feature in TFS2010 which enables the users to create and manage virtual test environments where you can deploy and test your application. There are no options available here as I don’t have the Lab Management configured for my Team Foundation Server. The next screen is Review Configuration window, which will show up all the configuration settings you have specified, so that you can review the configurations before creating the Team Project Collection. If you want to make any changes to the configurations then you can go back to the previous windows and can make the changes. After Reviewing the configuration settings, you can click on verify button. Which will verify that if you’re Team Project Collection is ready to be created or not, it will show up the errors and warning (if any) which can make your Team Project Collection fail. You can then choose to create the Team Project Collection if the verify option doesn’t throw any warnings and errors. If the verify option throws any errors, then it is strongly suggested that you have to first rectify the issues then only go for TPC creation especially in case of warnings as it is a common practice to overlook the warnings.   If you choose the create TPC option, then it will start the process of creating a Team Project Collection  and once its completed you can check the status of configuration different components  during Team Project Collection. You can see in below screen that all the components are configured successfully.   In next screen, you can find the location of log file created for this Team Project Creation, this log file is really important in case of Team Project creation failure because it will help you to find  the root cause for the failure. Now, you can see that the New Team Projection (Demo Collection) which was created is now available in Team Foundation Collection tab and its status is Online.   You can now try to connect to this Team Project Collection from Team Explorer. Choose the newly created Team Project Collection and click on connect.     This Team Project Collection is empty because no Team Projects are created yet. Now, you can create the new Team Projects and start working.

• Covariance and Contravariance in C#

  I will start by saying that I am Java developer learning to program in C#. As such I do comparisons of what I know with what I am learning. I have been playing with C# generics for a few hours now, and I have been able to reproduce the same things I know in Java in C#, with the exception of a couple of examples using covariance and contravariance. The book I am reading is not very good in the subject. I will certainly seek more info on the web, but while I do that, perhaps you can help me find a C# implementation for the following Java code. An example is worth a thousand words, and I was hoping that by looking a good code sample I will be able to assimilate this more rapidly. Covariance In Java I can do something like this: public static double sum(List<? extends Number> numbers) { double summation = 0.0; for(Number number : numbers){ summation += number.doubleValue(); } return summation; } I can use this code as follows: List<Integer> myInts = asList(1,2,3,4,5); List<Double> myDoubles = asList(3.14, 5.5, 78.9); List<Long> myLongs = asList(1L, 2L, 3L); double result = 0.0; result = sum(myInts); result = sum(myDoubles) result = sum(myLongs); Now I did discover that C# supports covariance/contravariance only on interfaces and as long as they have been explicitly declared to do so (out). I think I was not able to reproduce this case, because I could not find a common ancestor of all numbers, but I believe that I could have used IEnumerable to implement such thing if a common ancestor exists. Since IEnumerable is a covariant type. Right? Any thoughts on how to implement the list above? Just point me into the right direction. Is there any common ancestor of all numeric types? Contravariance The contravariance example I tried was the following. In Java I can do this to copy one list into another. public static void copy(List<? extends Number> source, List<? super Number> destiny){ for(Number number : source) { destiny.add(number); } } Then I could use it with contravariant types as follows: List<Object> anything = new ArrayList<Object>(); List<Integer> myInts = asList(1,2,3,4,5); copy(myInts, anything); My basic problem, trying to implement this in C# is that I could not find an interface that was both covariant and contravariant at the same time, as it is case of List in my example above.   I searched for an answer but couldn't find it. The problem: Depending on the selected spinner-item the application should show a different image. At this moment I can't get it to work. The Url works like this: "my.site.com/images/" imc_met ".png" were imc_met is the filename. I can't get it to work. • Deadlock in SQL Server 2005! Two real-time bulk upserts are fighting. WHY?

  Here's the scenario: I've got a table called MarketDataCurrent (MDC) that has live updating stock prices. I've got one process called 'LiveFeed' which reads prices streaming from the wire, queues up inserts, and uses a 'bulk upload to temp table then insert/update to MDC table.' (BulkUpsert) I've got another process which then reads this data, computes other data, and then saves the results back into the same table, using a similar BulkUpsert stored proc. Thirdly, there are a multitude of users running a C# Gui polling the MDC table and reading updates from it. Now, during the day when the data is changing rapidly, things run pretty smoothly, but then, after market hours, we've recently started seeing an increasing number of Deadlock exceptions coming out of the database, nowadays we see 10-20 a day. The imporant thing to note here is that these happen when the values are NOT changing. To me it looks like it's deadlocking on the PK of the table, so I tried removing that PK and switching to a Unique Constraint instead but that increased the number of deadlocks 10-fold. I'm totally lost as to what to do about this situation and am open to just about any suggestion. HELP!!
