• Switching website DNS with minimal downtime

  I need to change my domain's DNS, but here in Thailand the ISPs don't follow any standards for renewing their cache of records, so it can take the full two days. I have a new website with about 1,000 members currently who are sending messages and uploading photos. I don't want both sites on the old and new server running at the same time because then I'd have to manually merge the database and transfer uploaded photos. It would be a huge pain. Both servers also a unique URL from my host, e.g. website12345.hostingcompany.com (old host) and website67890.hostingcompany.com (new host). I don't have much experience with this, but I think what I can do is on www.mysite.com, use .htaccess to do a masked redirect to the new server's URL (website67890.hostingcompany.com). Is it possible to do this and keep all URLs being masked? For example, www.mysite.com/profile/username will actually be loading website12345.hostingcompany.com/profile/username. From Google searches it sounds like this is possible, but I don't understand why this is possible due to security issues, since what's keeping people from masking their site to URLs like facebook.com? I could really use some advice here! Thanks!

  I have noticed some error during the Linux boot. They seem to continue to occur after the boot adding lines to the log every few seconds. Once booted this normally does not appear to be causing any problems. However, around 1 in 10 boots results in a kernel panic and the computer has on two or three occasions suddenly rebooted after being powered on for a number of hours. I presume the cause of the reboot is a kernel panic as well. I am running Ubuntu 11.10 and I have had Ubuntu installed on the computer for around a year. I have googled around and not found anything useful. I have provided the kernel log lines and the output of smartctl. • Ubuntu 12.04 NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 black screen during boot

  I'm using Ubuntu as the only operating system since two years. In the first Ubuntu versions I had seen my BIOS screen and the boot screens. Actually im using Ubuntu 12.04 and my screen stays black until Ubuntu is started (both screens are missing). I guess this situation appeared the first time in Ubuntu 11 (not sure). I searched via google and tried the popular activities but was not able to fix my issue. I opened the laptop and checked all connections. I'm using boot option nomodeset. I had a look through many many web pages. I don't know how to continue and hope somebody could be helpful. • Economical DNS hosting separate from local registrar for country specific TLDs - email or web hosting not required

  Our company owns many country specific top level domains (TLDs; .sg, .my). We will purchase more for other countries in all South East Asia. These domains are associated with our websites hosted on Amazon EC2. The DNS records are currently hosted on a dedicated server that will shut down tomorrow. (The name servers are set to the ones of a web hosting company) Therefore, I will need to host the DNS records somewhere else. Hosting the DNS records with the local registrar costs SGD18 a year per domain in addition to the domain price (which is already very expensive but we have no choice). It would be convenience to host DNS recors for all the country specific TLDs we have using a single service, separate from the local registrars from which we bought the domains. A few searches prompted examples like Amazon Route 53 and dnsmadeeasy.com and the likes. However, since I'm only concern about the country specific TLDs, not .com 1) Is it really economical to host DNS records of all domains in 1 single place as described above? (Have the relevant countries and/or the local registrars done something to keep their monopoly and always charges ridiculous prices for their country specific TLDs?) 2) I would imagine I will need to tell the local registrars to update the name servers to those of the DNS hosting service provider e.g. dnsmadeeasy.com here. Am I correct about how it works here? 3) Will I be able point the TLDs themselves to IP addresses I desire (the EC2 instances where my websites are) or will I only able to do so with the subdomains? 4) Are there any drawbacks that I should know here? Background about our needs: We need the websites associated with the country TLDs to be up and running all the times Also, we'll need to be able to add/edit A and CNAME records We use Google Apps for Business for internal email so I will need to be able to add/edit MX records and TXT records

  I dived into the MEF session with Glenn Block, Sourabh Mathur, Brian Henderson, and others.  Glenn covered the basic architectural ideas of MEF and then dived into a few examples. Is a framework around decoupling components. Built around the idea of discoverable type systems. Traditional extensibility mechanisms have a host and the respective extensions, commonly linking these two aspects with a form of registration. MEF removes the need for the registration part of the architecture and uses a contract. At some point with MEF you get down to parts, which removes even the complexity of a host or extensions, but a truly evolvable architecture based on natural growth of parts. Also referred to as the framework that removes the "new" keyword. The idea is that parts pull together other parts that they need.  Between each part is a contract. Each part has imports or exports for the parts it needs or the things it offers. If one checks out the MEF Codeplex Site you will find a host of additional information.  The framework download also has some decent examples that help one get kick started.

Informations about it: My network is set to broadcast SSID; Already typed lspci, and it doesnt returns my wireless card; Tried installing windows drivers from fabricant cd usind diswrapper, but it says it cant complete the installation because it cant find some "Device" folder; I don't know what else to do, I switch the wireless button on/off and it just can't see any wireless connection, includin mine.   I am having a problem with a test page I set up for my website. The config file (index.html) looks like this <html> <head> <title>Welcome to website.net!</title> </head> <body> <h1>Success! The website.net virtual host is working!</h1> </body> </html> Which should display a page like this in my browser when I navigate to www.mywebsite.net Welcome to website.net! Success! The website.net virtual host is working! However I get a 403 "forbidden" error when I navigate to the page. What am I missing? I have the directory installed on /var/www/mywebsite.net/public_html/index.html I have the permissions of the /var/www directory set to 755 so that others can read and exicute it but it does not seem to be working. I also have port 80 open on my iptable. The server is a VPS server if that makes a difference however I have added a DNS record for the ip address. Any help is appreciated! • Can't ssh to instance

  I have a linode instance, I was successfully connecting to it via ssh. But I've decided to rebuild my instance and then I can not connect to that instance via ssh.   Just a day ago, I was doing small attempting to connect to my local SQL Server using IP 127.0.0.1. The IP is of my local machine and SQL Server is installed on the local box as well. However, whenever I try to connect to the server it gave me following strange error. Cannot connect to 127.0.0.1. Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452) The reason was indeed strange as I was trying to connect from local box to local box and it said my login was from an untrusted domain. As my system is not part of any domain, this was really confusing to me. Another thing was that I have been always able to connect always using 127.0.0.1 to SQL Server and this was a bit strange to me. I started to think what did I change since it  last time I connected to SQL Server. Suddenly I remembered that I had modified my computer’s host file for some other purpose. Solution: I opened my host file and immediately added entry like 127.0.0.1 localhost. Once I added it I was able to reconnect to SQL Server as usual. The location of the host file is C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. You will find file with the name hosts in it, make sure to open it with notepad. If you are part of a domain and your organization is using active directory, make sure that your account is added properly to active directory as well have proper security permissions to execute the task. • Using default parameters for 404 error (PHP with mvc design)?

  I have a custom made Framework (written in PHP). It all works very good, but i have some doubts about a certain thing. Right now when a user call this url for example: http://host.com/user/edit/12 Which would resolve to: user = userController edit = editAction() in userController 12 = treated as a param But suppose the controller 'userController' doesn't exist. Then i could throw a 404. But on the other hand, the url could also be used as params for the indexController (which is the default controller). So in that case: controller = indexController user = could be an action in indexController, otherwise treated as a param edit = treated as a param 12 = treated as a param That is actually how it works right now in my framework. So basically, i never throw a 404. I could ofcourse say that only params can be given if the controller name is explicitly named in the URL. So if i want the above url: http://host.com/user/edit/12 To be invoked by the indexController, in the indexAction. Then i specifically have to tell what controller and action it uses in the URL. So the URL should become: http://host.com/index/index/user/edit/12 index = indexController index (2nd one) = the action method user = treated as a param edit = treated as a param 12 = treated as a param That way, when a controller doesn't exist, i don't reroute everything as a param to the index controller and simply throw a 404 error. Now my question is, which one is more preffered? Should i allow both options to be configurable in a config file? Or should i always use one of them. Simply because that's the only and best way to do it?

• Lost WiFi after 12.10 upgrade

  I received my new Dell Vostro 2420 last week, and just got around to upgrading from 11.10 to 12.10. Unfortunately, like many others (after researching the issue), I no longer have WiFi. I have tried every sudo command given that worked for others, and still can't get my wireless to function. I am new to Linux, so any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance! Edit: I can connect via ethernet, just not via wifi. • Connected to wireless, but no internet access

  After installing Ubuntu 12.04 a week ago wireless internet had been working fine. It stopped working yesterday, however, and I'm at a loss for what to do even after scouring replies to similar posted problems. I have tried using Google's public DNS and turning off proxy settings on Firefox. I have used nm-tool and lshw to make sure my wireless device and driver are connected. • High quality/performance shared hosting (in northern Europe)

  I work as a web developer on almost all levels. However, my typical customer is a 1-5 guys running some sort of consulting business. They have (or want) a web page with some kind of CMS so the can perform most (or all) editing themselves. I normally opt for Concrete5 as my default CMS because it's the most user friendly (and free) CMS I have found. My good recurring customers I host on my own server as a service, but I need a good host for the customers where I want to deliver a product and not be responsible for whatever may happen in the future. However, I still struggle with hosting! Experience shows that the typical ~1$ shared hosting is waaay to slow to run concrete5 smoothly, and a VPS is out of the question because I don't want to maintain it. So, where can I find as fast (from northern Europe), reliable, shared host where I can put a site and don't have to worry about the server going down or being unmaintained. I expect this should cost around $10-$20 but I'm open to all kinds of suggestions because different customers have different budgets.

• Dedicated server: managed hosting or manage it myself?

  We're currently hosting a number of sites on a self-managed dedicated server. Some companies, however, offer a managed dedicated server hosting service. They offer: Roughly the same server spec Ticketing system support Managed daily backups Virtual firewall (but with a limit of 10 IP addresses allowed through at any one time) Now, this managed hosting is at extra expense - somewhere in the region of $500 per month, and the limit on the number of IP addresses they'll manage on the firewall is also a real pain. My thinking is it would be better and cheaper to Stay with the same host since the dedicated box is fine Get an Amazon AWS account and use their server to manage backups; there are a number of good tools that can be used to automate the process Configure iptables so that I have complete control of the firewall I want to know Is a managed virtual firewall likely to be more secure than me configuring iptables? Whether, in your opinion, it's best to let someone else take care of backups? If, from your experience, there's anything else i'm missing that warrants using managed hosting over a DIY service? I think there is some reluctance to not having managed hosting since a managed host in effect takes responsibility for your server, whereas any hardware or security issues with a server that we manage would mean we are forced to hold our hands up when a client site goes down. That said, I personally don't think a managed host does that much in the day to day running of your server (backups are automatic, OS updates are carried out with ease, etc.).
