• Where do you use Java code? Trouble sending .jar files

  Apologies for the generic nature of this question. I have been learning Java for a few months now, and I've created a few simple projects which have some functionality. I wanted to send the projects to a friend and I'm running into countless errors and struggles. Passing a .jar file is causing "Main class not found" errors when they try to open it. I tried using third party software to wrap the .jar files into an .exe file and the same errors still persist. Beyond that, I'm convinced that passing around .jar files wrapped into .exe files via third party software is NOT how Java was intended to be used. I've read two books on Java and they all talk about structuring the language, but I'm confused about WHERE I'm supposed to be using this code because it has become painfully obvious that it is NOT intended to be passed around in file format. Is this a server programming language? Used on the back end of websites mainly? I'm not sure where one would be using the code written in Java.

  I'm trying to make a card game. some classes I have are: CardModel, CardView; DeckModel, DeckView. The deck model has a list of card model, According to MVC, if I want to send a card to a deck, I can add the card model to the deck model, and the card view will be added to the deck view by a event handler. So I have a addCard(CardModel m) in the DeckModel class, but if I want to send a event to add the card view of that model to the deck view, I only know let the model has a reference to view. So the question is: If the card model and deck model have to have a reference to their view classes to do it? If not, how to do it better? • jQuery: How to use modifier keys on form submit?

  Say I have a form that looks like this: [ Animal name input field ] Add button If I type a name and hit enter, an animal with the given name is added to a table. Works fine. What I would like now is to call the current way of working "quick add" and add a new feature called "slow add", which I am not quite sure how to do. Basically what I want is that if for example the shift key is held down when enter or the button is clicked, I want the form submit method to do something slightly different. In my case I want it to open up a form where more details on the animal can be added before it is added to the table. Problem is I'm not quite sure how to do this. I have tried add a FireBug console.info(eventData) in my current submit function and I have found that the eventData contains an altKey, shiftKey and controlKey property, but they are always undefined even when I hold those keys down. So, does anyone know how I can do something special in my submit handler when certain modifier keys were pressed when the form was submitted?

• How to catch this low level MySQL (?) error in PHP/Magento

  When I'm executing the following statement in Magento with a really large $sku, the execution terminates without any errors thrown what so ever. There are no errors in either Magento's, Apache's or PHP's error logs. Mage::getModel('catalog/product')-loadByAttribute('sku', $sku); Question: How do I catch the error? I've tried to set custom error handlers, and for testing purposes I've also managed to trigger error situations where each of the error handler functions are invoked. But when running the previously mentioned Magento code with a large $sku, none of the error handling functions are executed. error_reporting( -1 ); set_error_handler( array( 'Error', 'captureNormal' ) ); set_exception_handler( array( 'Error', 'captureException' ) ); register_shutdown_function( array( 'Error', 'captureShutdown' ) ); For completeness, this is the $sku I'm passing to loadByAttribute(). • AppleScript: open frontmost file with another application

  I'd like to write an AppleScript program to do the following (Automator would be fine too): I want to open the current active TextMate file (possibly there are several tabs open and other windows) with the application Transmit 2. (This will upload the file over FTP using Transmit's DockSend feature.) Here I've used a specific application (TextMate) but ideally I'd like it to work for any file currently active in any application. Ultimately I will assign a keyboard shortcut to run it. Here's what I have so far: tell application (path to frontmost application as text) set p to path of document 1 end tell tell application "Finder" open POSIX file p using "Transmit 2" end tell I've tried many variants of this and nothing works. I get the error (when using Transmit 2): Transmit 2 got an error: AppleEvent handler failed. One of the updates to v2 has broken it (not sure which one).

• SCons and dependencies for python function generating source

  I have an input file data, a python function parse and a template. What I am trying to do is use parse function to get dictionary out of data and use that to replace fields in template. Now to make this a bit more generic (I perform the same action in few places) I have defined a custom function to do so. • MDX: Filtering a member set by a measure's table values

  I have some numbers in a fact table, and have generated a measure which use the SUM aggregator to summarize the numbers. But the problem is that I only want to sum the numbers that are higher than, say 10. I tried using a generic expression in the measure definition, and that works of course, but the problem is that I need to be able to dynamically set that value, because it's not always 10, meaning users should be able to select it themselves.   So to allow any type object I must use generics in my code. I have rewrote this method to do so, but then when I create an object, for example Milk, it won't let me pass it to my method. Ether there's something wrong with my generic revision, or Milk object I created is not good. How should I pass my object correctly and add it to linked list?   I've got an AVQueuePlayer which I'm creating from an array of 4 AVPlayerItems, and it all plays fine.   I''m trying to build a generic cache layer. ICacheRepository Say I have the following: public class Person { public int PersonId { get; set; } public string Firstname { get; set; } public string Lastname { get; set; } public DateTime Added { get; set; } } And I have something like this: list.Where(x => x.Firstname == "Syska"); Here I want to extract the above information, to see if the query supplied the "PersonId" which it did not, so I dont want to cache it. But lets say I run a query like this: list.Where(x => x.PersonId == 10); Since PersonId is my key ... I want to cache it. with the key like "Person_10" and I later can fetch it from the cache. I know its possible to extract the information with Expression<Func<>> but there seems to be a big overhead of doing this (when running compile and extract the Constant values etc. and a bunch of cache to be sure to parse right) Are there a framework for this? Or some smart/golden way of doing this ?

• Joomla Site Templates: Architecture Advise

  Our client provided us with html templates to turn into a Joomla template, problem is their designs are not Joomla Template friendly where a lot of the html design are not consistent with structure. Currently the only solution we have is applying a template structure pattern that fits the most amount of their design and have seperate joomla templates to take care of the ones that doesn't fit. We have the generic Joomla Template configured with different positions for each div and assign each article to its respective position in the template. Some articles though have menu modules within them so our solution is to split the article into two position and define positions for each menu module. Is this method better than defining module positions within an article content to render menus within an article? Is there a better way of showing articles in specific div positions than having each article be represented by a module to render in a specific div (position) in a template? Right now our current way of rendering an article(s) content to a specific position is to create a module (moduleAsArticle) and define that module a position. • Should Wordpress be used to create a real estate listing site?

  I have a real estate agent client who wants a website to list the properties he's selling. Although there are great 3rd party web apps out there that do this, he adamantly demands that I recreate a simple and custom website for him. I can do this quickly with a php framework like Code Igniter that comes with MVC, data access objects and data bind controllers. The database would be straightforward: t_page: generic content pages t_property: for each property on the market, has fields like address, price, #of bed rooms etc.. However, the client has heard many great things about Wordpress, and strongly advises that I build his real estate site with it. I've only used Wordpress to create blogs and relatively straightforward websites. SO I dont know how effective it is as a real estate property content management system or how effective it is for users to search for real estate properties based on attributes such as "# of bedrooms, square footage, is basement finished etc..." So my question is, is it a good idea to build a real estate agent website with Wordpress? Or should I try harder to convince him to build it with web framework like Code Igniter?

• Socket stops communicating

  I'm running python 2.7 code on a Raspberry Pi that receives serial data from an Arduino, processes it, and sends it to a Windows box over a wifi link. The Pi is wired to a Linksys router running in client bridge mode and that router connects over wifi to another Linksys router to which the Windows box is wired. The code in the Pi runs fine for some (apparently) random interval, and then the Pi becomes unreachable from the Windows box. I'm running PUTTY on the the Windows machine to connect to the Pi and when the fail occurs I get a message saying there's been a network error and the Pi is not reachable. Pinging the Pi from the Windows machine works fine until the error, at which time it produces "Reply from 192.168.0.129: Destination host unreachable." The client bridge router to which the Pi is connected remains reachable. I've got the networking code on the Pi wrapped in an exception handler, and when it fails it shows the following: Ethernet problem: Traceback (most recent call last): File "garage.py", line 108, in module s.connect((host, port)) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/socket.py", line 224, in meth return getattr(self._sock,name)(*args) error: [Errno 113] No route to host None The relevant python code looks like: import socket import traceback host = '192.168.0.129' port = 31415 in the setup, and after serial data has been processed: try: bline = strline.encode('utf-8') s = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM) s.connect((host, port)) s.send(bline) s.close() except: print "Ethernet problem: " print traceback.print_exc() Where strline contains the processed data. As I said, this runs fine for a few hours more or less before failing. Any ideas? EDIT: When PUTTY fails its error message is :Network Error: Software caused connection abort."

• Is there a Form.Invoke() method?

  Hi, I am new to multithreading (and also to C#) so I hope this is not obvious: In my Form (WinForms application, .NET 2.0) I subscribed to an event that is raised by another object, and on handling this event I wish to change several Controls on my Form. As this event is raised in another thread than the main (UI) thread I want to marshal the call to the Form's thread. I understand I could use the Control.Invoke() method on any Control that I want to change, but as there are several of them I do not wish to do that. When searching the internet I found hints that the Form class itself provides an Invoke() method. See for example: http://marioschneider.blogspot.com/2008/04/invoke-methode-fr-multithread.html (Sorry, as I am I new user I can't seem to post more than one link. I will add more links as comments if possible.) With that, I could just wrap my event handler and then use it as if it was called on the UI thread. However, this doesn't seem to be defined in my environment, and in MSDN's System.Windows.Forms.Form documentation there's also no sign of it. Does this method exist in the .NET-Framework? I find it hard to believe that Form would not supply such a method, as it uses the same message queue the Controls on it do. (Or am I missing something here?)

• STLifying C++ classes

  I'm trying to write a class which contains several std::vectors as data members, and provides a subset of vector's interface to access them: class Mesh { public: private: std::vector<Vector3> positions; std::vector<Vector3> normals; // Several other members along the same lines }; The main thing you can do with a mesh is add positions, normals and other stuff to it. In order to allow an STL-like way of accessing a Mesh (add from arrays, other containers, etc.), I'm toying with the idea of adding methods like this: public: template<class InIter> void AddNormals(InIter first, InIter last); Problem is, from what I understand of templates, these methods will have to be defined in the header file (seems to make sense; without a concrete iterator type, the compiler doesn't know how to generate object code for the obvious implementation of this method). Is this actually a problem? My gut reaction is not to go around sticking huge chunks of code in header files, but my C++ is a little rusty with not much STL experience outside toy examples, and I'm not sure what "acceptable" C++ coding practice is on this. Is there a better way to expose this functionality while retaining an STL-like generic programming flavour? • Validating a phone number in Android PreferenceScreen

  I have a PreferenceScreen in which the user is capable, if system can't autodetect it, to enter the device's phone number. I'm still learning this part of Android but I managed to understand a bit of PreferenceScreens by examples provided by Android SDK itself and a few tutorials. Just for sake of completeness for those who don't like code courtesy of the IDE, the second method is provided by Eclipse who also provides a private class in the code file that is /** * A preference value change listener that updates the preference's summary * to reflect its new value. */ In the general case, what should I do to perform validation logic before the preference gets saved when I click OK on the preference editor? Where is the validation logic to be put in a PreferenceScreen? *Aren't we all here to learn?

  Good Day, I have a small form with a combo box (ASP.NET Drop Down List control) and a text box (with a DIV id txtName). When the selected index of the combo box changes, I want to clear out the text box. I understand that: $("#txtName").val(''); clears the text box value The thing is the combo box. It contains a list of integers representing the months of the year. The drop down control is called ddlMonths. $("#ddlMonths").change(function() { $("#txtName").val(''); }); I thought by using change, an onSelectedIndexChange event handler would be associated with this control. I also tried (because I've ran into the client id being mangled in ASP.NET w/ jQuery) this: $("#<%=ddlMonths.ClientID%>").change(function() { $("#<%=txtName.ClientID%>").val(''); }); and neither approach seems to be working. • Binding Javascript Event Handlers to a an Ajax HTML Response?

  Let's say I have the following HTML code <div id="outer"> <div id="inner">Hello World</div> </div> At the end of my HTML page, I use javascript to attach event handlers like so, document.getElementById('inner').onclick = function() {alert(this.innerHTML);} document.getElementById('outer').onclick = function() { /* An Ajax Call where the response, which will be a string of HTML content, then goes into document.getElementById('outer').innerHTML */ document.getElementById('inner').onclick = function() {alert(this.innerHTML);} } In the above code, I am expecting <div id="inner">Hello World 2</div> to come back which requires me to re-attach the onclick event handler. This makes sense because the new response coming back is just a string, and I have to tell the browser that after converting to DOM, i also need some event handlers So my question is, is there a better way to manage event handlers on AJAX response that contains HTML content? I could use inline javascript within the html response, but then it prevents me from achieving non-intrusive javascript. So is there a way to achieve non-intrusive javascript and an efficient way to "maintain" event handlers of ajax html responses?

• Handling Email Bouncebacks in Rails

  Hi there, I've built a very basic CRM system for my rails app that allows me to send weekly user activity digests with custom text and create multi-part marketing messages which I can configure and send through a basic admin interface. I'm happy with what I've put together on the send-side of things (minus the fact that I haven't tried to volume test its capabilities), but I'm concerned about how to handle bounce-backs. I came across this plugin with associated scripts: http://github.com/kovyrin/bounces-handler I'm using Google Apps to handle my mail and really don't know enough about Perl to want to mess with the above plugin - I have enough headaches. I'm looking for a simple solution for processing bounce-backs in Rails. All my email will go out from an address like this which will be managed in Google Apps: "[email protected]." What's the best workflow for this? Can anyone post an example solution they're using keeping in mind the fact that I'm using Google Apps for the mail? Any guidance, links, or basic workflow best-practices to handle this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -A

• What's the right way to show a non-modal child dialog in MFC (VS2005)?

  Rather than have everything in one big dialog, I'm looking at being able to display child dialogs for separate groups of controls. The idea is these are not free-floating child dialogs like floating toolbars, but would be shown with no title-bar, their position locked to the parent dialog... so as you drag the parent dialog any open child is dragged too. NOTE: these child windows are not inside the parent dialog, they would typically be 'glued' to the edge of it. In MFC/VC++ 2005, what's the best way to do this? For testing, I currently have a standard MFC Dialog-based app setup with CMainDlg, and I've then created a 'widget dialog' CWidgetDlg. So far I've got a member variable CWidgetDlg MainDlg::m_Widget and a button on CMainDlg with a handler like CMainDlg::OnDisplayWidgetBtn() { m_Widget.ShowWindow(TRUE); } But of course m_Widget hasn't got a HWND setup, and I am trying to remember the right way to do this? For dialog controls I can use DDX but what about child dialogs? And is this a reasonable approach, or is there a nicer, more automated way?
