  • How do I dynamically name objects in Java?

    Let's say I needed to make a series of String[] objects. I know that if i wanted to make a string array called "test" to hold 3 Strings I could do String[] test = new String[3]; But let's say I needed to make a series of these arrays and I wanted them to be named, 1,2, 3, 4, 5... etc. For however many I needed and I didn't know how many I'd need. How do I achieve a similar effect to this: for (int k=0; k=5; k++){ String[] k = new String[3]; } Which would created 5 string arrays named 1 through 5. Basically I want to be able to create array objects with a name detemined by some other function. Why can't I seem to do this? Am I just being stupid?

There is a class called CollectionHelper that defines the following constant varibale: public final class CollectionHelper { public static final List EMPTY_LIST = Collections.unmodifiableList( new ArrayList(0 ) ; public static final Collection EMPTY_COLLECTION = Collections.unmodifiableCollection(new ArrayList(0) ); public static final Map EMPTY_MAP = Collections.unmodifiableMap( new HashMap(0) ); They have used these constants to initialize collections with immutable instances. Why they didn't simply use the Collections.EMPTY_LIST for initializing lists? Is there a benefit in using the following method?

    Hi, How do I differentiate between multiple cookies set through my site? I am setting two kinds of cookies one to see if the user has visited the site or not and an other one for authentication. How do I differentiate between these two? I get both of them when someone accesses a page after authentication. Do I add extra information to the Cookie Value or is there some other way? I understand the setName() function will change the name (from jsessionid) for every cookie from then on. Am I correct? Pav

I want to update a JLabel from the interim result published by the swing worker as follows: publish("Published String"); Now to update the JLabel, I have coded the following: process(List<String> chunks) { if (chunks.size() > 0) { String text = chunks.get(chunks.size() - 1); label.setText(text); } } The above code works but my problem(or to be more specific, my doubt) is as follows: The above swing worker task is an annonymous inner class so it can access label field. But what if I want to make the swing worker class a non-inner class. Should I need to pass label as an argument to the constructor of swing worker class so that the process() method can access. Or Is there any other way? What approach does other developer follow to update UI components from the swing worker class' result when the swing worker class is not an inner class?

To generate my two keys I used this piece of code : KeyPairGenerator keygen = KeyPairGenerator.getInstance("RSA"); keygen.initialize(512); keyPair = keygen.generateKeyPair(); Once public and private key are generated, I would like to show them to the user so he can distribute the public key and use the private key to decode. How can I get back those key ? Using keygen.getPrivateKey() and keygen.getPublicKey() give me all the information of the RSA algorithm, not only the keys I need. Thanks

  • Non-blocking MySQL updates with java?

    For a multiplayer game I'm working on I'd like to record events to the mysql database without blocking the game update thread so that if the database is busy or a table is locked the game doesn't stop running while it waits for a write. What's the best way to accomplish this? I'm using c3p0 to manage the database connection pool. My best idea so far is to add query update strings to a synchronized list with an independent thread checking the list every 100ms and executing the queries it finds there.

    I am trying to load properties from a file (test.properties) The code I use is as follows: URL url = getClass().getResource("../resources/test.properties"); properties.load(url.openStream()); But when executing the second line I get a NPE. (null pointer exception) I'm not sure what's wrong here... I have checked that the file exists at the location where URL points to... Any help is appreciated....

    Ive made an address book. I can currently write to the arraylist and save it back to the .buab file, but I cant delete from the arraylist and export it back to the .buab file? Im pretty much stuck on this. Im able to retrive contacts from the .buab and scroll through them using the JTextFields and buttons ive created. Any help will be dearly appreciated. Ive set up seprate classes for all operations (newcontacts, nextcontact etc). If you need the code posted let me know.. Cheers Dave

    I am trying to parse an XML file from an HTTP URL. I want to configure a timeout of 15 seconds if the XML fetch takes longer than that, I want to report a timeout. For some reason, the setConnectTimeout and setReadTimeout do not work. Here's the code: URL url = new URL("http://www.myurl.com/sample.xml"); URLConnection urlConn = url.openConnection(); urlConn.setConnectTimeout(15000); urlConn.setReadTimeout(15000); urlConn.setAllowUserInteraction(false); urlConn.setDoOutput(true); InputStream inStream = urlConn.getInputStream(); InputSource input = new InputSource(inStream); And I am catching the SocketTimeoutException.     Is there a way, either in code or with JVM arguments, to override the current time, as presented via System.currentTimeMillis, other than manually changing the system clock on the host machine? A little background: We have a system that runs a number of accounting jobs that revolve much of their logic around the current date (ie 1st of the month, 1st of the year, etc) Unfortunately, a lot of the legacy code calls functions such as new Date() or Calendar.getInstance(), both of which eventually call down to System.currentTimeMillis. For testing purposes, right now, we are stuck with manually updating the system clock to manipulate what time and date the code thinks that the test is being run. So my question is: Is there a way to override what is returned by System.currentTimeMillis? For example, to tell the JVM to automatically add or subtract some offset before returning from that method? Thanks in advance!

  • Implementing java FixedTreadPool status listener

    Hi there, it's about an application which is supposed to process (VAD, Loudness, Clipping) a lot of soundfiles (e.g. 100k). At this time, I create as many worker threads (callables) as I can put into memory, and then run all with a threadPool.invokeAll(), write results to file system, unload processed files and continue at step 1. Due to the fact it's an app with a GUI, i don't want to user to feel like the app "is not responding" while processing all soundfiles. (which it does at this time cause invokeAll is blocking). Im not sure what is a "good" way to fix this. It shall not be possible for the user to do other things while processing, but I'd like to show a progress bar like "10 of 100000 soundfiles are done". So how do I get there? Do I have to create a "watcher thread", so that every worker hold a callback on it? I'm quite new to multi threading, and don't get the idea of such a mechanisem..
