  I am trying to query the following registry key values: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client\SharedMemoryOn HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client\SuperSocketNetLib\ProtocolOrder But depending on which machine I'm running the program the query returns null. When I debug on my local machine and I inspect the value for ValueCount for: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client\SuperSocketNetLib The count is 0 and OpenSubKey returns null. • Connecting to a SQL Server Compact Edition (.sdf) from an MFC application

  Hey ! I'm building an MFC app in Visual Studio 2008 which classifies textures and I need some sort of lightweight database to hold the characteristics (just some doubles and strings) which can be: -carried around with the app on different computers; -be able to perform queries on it from the app (searches , updates ,inserts ,etc); Currently I'm looking into SQL compact edition because it was very easy to create from Visual Studio ( I also need only one table) but I having a hard time connecting and updating the db from C++.   Is there an easy way to determine the size of a Form it does have in WindowState=Normal, without actually changing the Form state?   Hello All, I am doing dynamic plotting using core plot library and i have placed that plot on UIScrollView so that i can scroll the plot. Now i want to do Pinch Zooming on that, means when i m doing pinch zooming that that part where i have pinched will be zoomed,other part will also be zoomed but we can see certain par of the graph at one time so wherever i have pinched that part will be shown in zoomed state in focused view and when i am doing scrolling i can see other part also in a zoom state. When I run my webapp to generate a dynamic excel doc from my local machine it works fine but when the same piece of code is invoked on the server I get the below error. It seems like it's a permissions issues since it works on my machine but not the server but I don't know where to start in order to pinpoint the problem. Any guidance/help is greatly appreciated! • Using an NSButtonCell with template image in a NSTableView

  In Interface Builder, I have set the dataCell of one of the columns of my NSTableView instance to be NSButtonCell. This works as expected, however, trying to use a ‘template’ image doesn't yield the expected visual result when clicking the button. How I configure the NSButtonCell: Image: NSRevealFreestandingTemplate Scaling: None Bezel: Bevel Type: Momentary Push In Bordered: false Expected result when clicking the button: Since the image is a ‘template’, the button should render its ‘on’ state. The background, ie the space surrounding the image, should not change. Actual result when clicking the button: No difference in the ‘state’ of the rendered image. The background color changes to white. Even-though I’ve tried my best to make the explanation of the problem as concise as possible, I’ve also made a simple screencast to visually illustrate the problem. And uploaded the demo app.

  Hi there I got a question about the behavior of lookup fields when importing data. I wonder how the lookup fields behave when the list they point to is being replaced/imported. To explain the issue, I will provide a quick example below: As example, assume we have these two sharepoint lists: Product Types ------------- + Type Name + Code Nr + etc Products -------- + Product Name + Product Type (Lookup field to list "Product Types") + etc In my scenario, the Products List contains production data on the production Sharepoint platform. It is filled with data by the business users. However the Product Types list contains rather static data and is maintained by the developer. Now after a development cycle, the developer wants to deploy his new webparts and his new data (product types list). The developer performs the following procedure: On the dev machine: Export "product type" list using stsadm On the production machine: Delete all items in the "product type" list On the production machine: Import the "product type" list using stsadm This means we basically replace the "product type" list on the production server while keeping the "product" list as it is. Now the question: Is this safe? Will the lookup references break under certain circumstances? Any downside of this import/export procedure? What happens if someone accesses a "product" during the import? Will the (now invalid) reference clear its own content (become a null value). What happens if the schema of the "product type" list changes (new column)? Will this cause any troubles? Thanks for all feedback and suggestions!

• NHibernate + Remoting = ReflectionPermission Exception

  Hi all, We are dealing with a problem when using NHibernate with Remoting in a machine with full trust enviroment (actually that's our dev machine). The problem happens when whe try to send as a parameter an object previously retrieved from the server, that contains a NHibernate Proxy in one of the properties (a lazy one). As we are in the dev machine, there's no restriction in the trust level of the web app (it's set to Full) and, as a plus, we've configured NHibernate's and Castle's assemblies to full trust in CAS (even thinking that it'd not be necessary as the remoting app in IIS has the full trust level). Does anyone have any idea of what can be causing this exception? Stack trace below. • Heroku taps push weirdness...

  I have the strangest experience using taps to move data between my machine and heroku. It works fine except that it seems to loose 0s directly behind the decimal place for my geo coordinates. Ie 50.0519322 for some reason gets set to 50.519322... no idea why. When I pull the data from the remote location ie. heroku db:pull... it works fine, all decimal places intact on my machine, however, when i push it back to the remote server it loses these zeros. Especially directly behind the decimal place, though I haven't noticed it elsewhere yet. At first I was storing the lat and lng as simply numeric but refined it to: change_column :places, :lat, :numeric, :precision => 15, :scale => 10 change_column :places, :lng, :numeric, :precision => 15, :scale => 10 With no result, any ideas what's going on? From the console on the remote server i get the lat as being: #<BigDecimal:2aebcc5967c0,'0.50519322E2',18(18)> and my machine as: #<BigDecimal:10232f7c8,'0.50519322E2',12(16)> which is also odd, the second one because it shows up as 50.0519322 when i edit it thru my view but when i do to_f via console it gives me 50.519322

• UIButton: Need a circle hit area

  Ok I have 6 custom UIButtons. Their normal state image are all circles images. They are all spaced out equally but all the circles touch each other. The problem with the custom UIbutton (which has a circle image on it), is that the hit area of that button is square, and the corners of this square overlaps the hitarea of the other custom button's hitarea. How do i make the hit area of a UIbutton whos normal state has a circle image, be only clickable on that circle only, rather than the normal square hit area?! I hope that someone can find a way for me to solve this problem that i currently am having! Thanks in advance Pavan

I can print a test page, which is processed/printed correctly. The next time printing is attempted (say printing a second test page), the page is not printed and the printer is set to disabled.   How do I run a script when a drive is mounted under OSX ? My usecase is that I would like to automatically copy images from my USB memory/harddrive when it is inserted in my USB card reader, and when a DVD or CD is inserted I would like to copy it for storage in my media center. I've tried using Marcopolo but from what I can see it can only detect the presence of a certain USB device, not the presence of specific harddrive. • Decoding a GIF question

  For a personal project I'm creating a static gif decoder. Everything works well so far, except I'm having trouble understanding one concept from the specification: This block is REQUIRED for an image. Exactly one Image Descriptor must be present per image in the Data Stream. An unlimited number of images may be present per Data Stream. (Spec) Unlimited images per data stream? There can be more than 1? I'm assuming they don't mean an animated GIF because in the same specification they state, that they don't recommend gif's be used for animation. I've read a lot of other sites documenting the gif format and they all state something similar. Heres another link: There might be an unlimited number of images present in a GIF. Any ideas?

• TcpListener is queuing connections faster than I can clear them

  As I understand it, TcpListener will queue connections once you call Start(). Each time you call AcceptTcpClient (or BeginAcceptTcpClient), it will dequeue one item from the queue. If we load test our TcpListener app by sending 1,000 connections to it at once, the queue builds far faster than we can clear it, leading (eventually) to timeouts from the client because it didn't get a response because its connection was still in the queue. However, the server doesn't appear to be under much pressure, our app isn't consuming much CPU time and the other monitored resources on the machine aren't breaking a sweat. It feels like we're not running efficiently enough right now. We're calling BeginAcceptTcpListener and then immediately handing over to a ThreadPool thread to actually do the work, then calling BeginAcceptTcpClient again. The work involved doesn't seem to put any pressure on the machine, it's basically just a 3 second sleep followed by a dictionary lookup and then a 100 byte write to the TcpClient's stream. One idea we had was to call AcceptTcpClient and immediately Enqueue the TcpClient into one of multiple Queue<TcpClient> objects. That way, we could poll those queues on separate threads (one queue per thread), without running into monitors that might block the thread while waiting for other Dequeue operations. Each queue thread could then use ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem to have the work done in a ThreadPool thread and then move onto dequeuing the next TcpClient in its queue. Would you recommend this approach, or is our problem that we're using TcpListener and no amount of rapid dequeueing is going to fix that?

• DDD - Validation of unique constraint

  In DDD you should never let your entities enter an invalid state. That being said, how do you handle the validation of a unique constraint? The creation of an entity is not a real problem. But let say you have an entity that must have a unique name and there is a thousand instances of this entity type - they are not in memory but stored in a database. Now let say you want to rename an instance. You can't just use a setter... the object could enter an invalid state - you have to validate against the database. How do you handle this scenario in a web environment?

• Android View.onDraw() always has a clean Canvas

  I am trying to draw an animation. To do so I have extended View and overridden the onDraw() method. What I would expect is that each time onDraw() is called the canvas would be in teh state that I left it in and I could choose to clear it or just draw over parts of it (This is how it worked when I used a SurfaceView) but each time the canvas comes back already cleared. Is there a way that I can not have it cleared? Or maybe save the previous state into a Bitmap so I can just draw that Bitmap and then draw over top of it?

• WPF UC in Winforms occasionally has an odd border to the left / visually corrupted

  I have a WPF user control I created that is used to show the state of tasks in my UI. I get the odd report back that the control sometimes has a nasty looking border to the left and I cannot reproduce it. The control looks like this (when working) (grey tick=not run, green=OK,red cross=fail,hourglass=running); It looks like this when the problem occurs; It may have something to do with the layering of those icons, when the state changes the others are made invisible and the relevant icon is made visible. The four icons are all stacked on top of each other. It could also be the background in theory, which I'll look at next. Problem is reported on both flat panel and CRT displays. Any guidance greatly appreciated. Update: 1) SnapsToDevicePixels does not affect the issue. 2) Grid is not used, only a canvas.

• Active Directory - Query Group for all machines

  Hi, I'm trying to obtain a list of all Machines that are members of a known group. I have the group GUID and am constructing a query using the "memberof=" format and filtering by ObjectClass. This works fine but doesn't return machines if the PrimaryGroup attribute of a machine is set to be the known group. In this case, that machine won't be returned. I've found the explanation of why this is in the following link (See Joe Kaplan's response) http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/29773581/active-directory-query-c.aspx Unfortunately the outlined answer is how to obtain the list of groups from a given user. I'd like to do the reverse and from a given group obtain the list of machines. It seems that the PrimaryGroup information is stored on the Machine/User side so I'm not sure if what I want to do is even possible. I had thought I would be able to query the TokenGroup attribute of the known group and then construct a query to return all machines that have the TokenGroup attribute set but it seems that not all groups have this attribute. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? If any clarification is needed let me know! Cheers, Ben

• What's the best way to check that environment variables are set in Unix shellscript

  I've got a few Unix shell scripts where I need to check that certain environment variables are set before I start doing stuff, so I do this sort of thing: if [ -z "$STATE" ]; then echo "Need to set STATE" exit 1 fi if [ -z "$DEST" ]; then echo "Need to set DEST" exit 1 fi which is a lot of typing. Is there a more elegant idiom for checking that a set of environment variables is set? EDIT: I should mention that these variables have no meaningful default value - the script should error out if any are unset.

• EJB3 Caching Instance Variables

  Hi, I've noticed some strange code on a project I am working on - its a SLSB EJB3, and it uses a private instance variable to maintain a cache of data (it even calls it dataCache or something), with a getter/setter. For EJB2 and bellow, this was a typical EJB antipattern - SLSBs are not meant to retain state in between invocations, theres no guarantee you'll see the same data on a subsequent invocation. One of my colleagues said maybe its ok in EJB3 (we don't have much EJB3 experience), but still, its a Stateless Session Bean - why is it trying to maintain state, this doesn't make sense. Can anyone confirm if this is still a bad idea in EJB3 land, or if somehow it is ok? Thanks if you can help, Justin
