  • Painless management of a logging table in SQL Server

Tables that log a record of what happens in an application can get very large, easpecially if they're growing by half a billion rows a day. You'll very soon need to devise a scheduled routine to remove old records, but the DELETE statement just isn't a realistic option with that volume of data. Hugo Kornelis explains a pain-free technique for SQL Server. Top 5 hard-earned Lessons of a DBA New! Part 4, ‘Disturbing Development’ by Grant Fritchey, features the return of Joe Deebeeay and a server-threatening encounter with ORMs - read it here

  • What does a beginner need to know before switching to Ubuntu?

    - by Natrium
I have never worked with Linux before. I always used Windows. But I'm considering installing Ubuntu on my machine. I read installing Ubuntu should be very easy. But are there any thing I need to keep in mind during the installation? What are the first things I have to do when I completed the installation? (I wanted to tag this with 'beginner' but I am not allowed, so I tagged with 'installation')

  • Tip: Regularily reset SharePoint Timer Service during development

    - by panjkov
There is an interesting issue that can occur on development machines during development of SharePoint solutions that contain Site Templates or list templates in certain scenarios when site creation is not done manually, but using some kind of Custom Timer Job. The issue manifests in a way that even after retraction of old WSP and deployment of new WSP, even after performing IISRESET, sites created with new WSP don't have applied latest changes which are part of new WSP, but instead use (contain)...(read more)

  • Is this Java 7 security thread an issue if you have Java 7 installed but not as the default?

    - by user1361315
I have a MBP with osx mountain lion installed, and I believe from what I read Mac's only ship with Java 6 by default. I'm not at my computer at the moment, but I am pretty sure I have installed Java 7 but it isn't my default java version (I think I installed it and I have to explicitly reference it to use it). Does this mean I am safe from this particular thread? Reference: http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/261748/researchers_find_critical_vulnerability_in_java_7_patch_hours_after_release.html

  • From Access to Outlook

Sending emails from Access is popular but so is creating appointments, tasks and contacts. The ability to read and process Outlook emails is also very useful, as is the ability to extract names and emails from the user's contact list. That's the topic covered in this and next month's articles.

  • SqlLocalDb vs. Cumulative Updates

    - by AaronBertrand
Last week I announced that SQL Server 2012 Cumulative Update #3 was released. A question came up about SqlLocalDb and I will try to address the current state of patching SqlLocalDb. Please keep in mind that these comments are only relevant to cumulative updates - I do not know whether this is all true for service packs. When SqlLocalDb was first released, there were a few ways to get it: - Visual Studio 2012 betas - SQL Server 2012 Express - From the standalone feature pack installer Now, at that...(read more)

  • What to do with DATETIMEOFFSET?

    - by GavinPayneUK
Someone asked me today if the time zone of a specific instance of SQL Server could be changed to match the country which that instance served. Some database products allow you to set this at an engine level which made me wonder if your data’s time fields “move” with the time zone setting of the database server instance?  If something was logged as happening at 9am Paris time it happened then, if I change my database server parameters did that event now happen at 9am New York time?  Perhaps...(read more)

  • Domain name made of keywords redirecting to main website's page

    - by ivanivan
Let's say I have a website called books.com where I sell books. I've read on Redirecting different domains to your main site that it's not a bad idea to register another domain that does a 301 redirect to my website, like booksforsale.com. Now, say I want to only target a specific category withing my website, like books.com/sci-fi/ so I register sci-fi-books.com and do a 301 redirect. Would this improve my search rankings? Thanks.

  • Windows Phone 7 Isolated Storage Explorer

    - by help.net
WP7 Isolated Storage Explorer is a tool designed to help developers and testers interact with the isolated storage file for Silverlight Windows Phone 7 applications. The explorer can work both as a desktop application for testers or integrated in Visual Studio for developers. Whenever a WP7 application/project involves storing data locally the the device, it will be to the isolated storage file. <b>Standards Blog:</b> "It does leave open one tantalizing question though, that's harder to read: does the decision to charge for the plug-in indicate that Oracle is taking its ODF-compliant office suite unit seriously as a money maker, and plans to put serious resources behind it..."

  • Programs and memory consumption [closed]

    - by cobie
I have a 4gb ram macbook pro but I still run out of memory when I have chrome and a few other light weight applications open such as multiple windows of macvim. These programs are written in C/C++ so technically should be memory efficient but why do they suck up all these memory. is it just bad engineering or graphical user interfaces because I have read about incredible feats performed in software dev back in the early computing days with very limited memory but now it just feels like the applications expand to fill all my memory.

I am not able use my Ubuntu Software Center and Synaptic package manager. I can't understand what's the problem. When I use the command: sudo apt-get update it shows this error: E: Malformed line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/canonical_partner.list (dist parse) E: The list of sources could not be read. I have seen How do I remove a malformed line from my sources.list?, but it didn't help.

  • Save File Contents to Variable in Python3.3 [migrated]

    - by Neo_Programmer
I have a Python3.3 script that seems to not work. The script will search for an XML pattern and then print the results to the screen. I am using Ubuntu 12.10 (AMD64) and python3.3. I prefer to use regex with XML, so please disregard this unconventional form of programming. #!/usr/bin/python3.3 import io, re openfile = open('./temp/xaiml/temp_db1.xaiml', 'r') TEMPDB = openfile.read() OUTPUT = print(''.join(re.findall('<cgy><prn>.*_.*<\/prn>.*<\/cgy>', TEMPDB, flags=re.I)))

  • A marketing view of SQLBits

    - by simonsabin
One of the most enjoyable things about SQLBits is reading all the blog posts/reviews after the event. We are normally fortunate enough not to have pissed anyone off and so the posts are generally positive. Most pieces are from attendees however this piece is from a wife of a sponsor http://iknowmarketing.wordpress.com/2012/04/02/events-community-vs-commercial/ . Its a nice piece for us as it highlights how we work and that how we focus on making the event personal for all those involved. We deal...(read more)

  • What are the functions of modern game publishers? [closed]

    - by ApoorvaJ
According to the Wikipedia page on Video game publishers, they are responsible for "their product's manufacturing and marketing, including market research and all aspects of advertising." From what I've read, they also arrange for the development funding. In the following questions, I'm asking about AAA, indie and mobile publishers: Do today's publishers fulfill any other functions? Is there any good reading material on these topics?
