• Nginx proxy to Apache - resolve HTTP ORIGIN

  I have a server setup with nginx serving static content and proxy all PHP/dynamic requests to apache on 127.0.0.1 I'm building an API for my databases, and I need to allow clients by their origin (domain name), rather than just IP. Based on CORS rules. So when I send an HTTP header header("Access-Control-Allow-Origin: www.client-requesting.myapi.com"); from my API server, I have to tell it which origin I allow, otherwise client side requests won't work to my API due to same-origin policy. The question is how can I know which domain name (if any) called my API? What should be the nginx and apache configuration to pass the origin parameter? I tried to google, and all I found is some possible solution with mod_rpaf, but I wanted to be sure. Thanks!

  In my application I am using following rewrite rule: RewriteRule ^/ajax(.*) http://api.externalserver.com/$1 [P,QSA,L] You know what it does. Now the problem is that my corporate network requires me to use HTTP proxy for external internet connections. To ilustrate, this doesn't work: curl -v http://api.externalserver.com/login But this works: curl -v -x 11.22.11.22:8585 http://api.externalserver.com/login How can I make Apache use the corporate proxy for external internet requests?

• Choosing a monitoring system for a dynamically scaling environment: Nagios v. Zabbix

  When operating in the cloud and scaling boxes automatically, there are certain monitoring issues that one experiences. Sometimes we might be monitoring 10 boxes and sometimes 100. The machines will scale up and down based on a demand. Right now, I think the best solution to this is to choose a monitoring solution that will instantiation of targets via calls to an API. But, is this really the best? I like the idea of dynamic discovery, but that is also a problem in the cloud seeing that the targets are not all in the same subnet. What monitoring solutions allow for a scaling environment like this? Zabbix currently has a draft API but I have been unable to fund a similar API for Nagios. Is there a similar API for Nagios? Anyone have any alternate suggestions besides Nagios and Zabbix?

• Can I configure Thunderbird 3 to refresh the folder list for an Exchange IMAP account?

  Background: When used as an IMAP client against Gmail, Thunderbird 3 (may be the case in v2 also, not sure) will refresh it's list of folders (the folders correspond to Gmail labels) when you do "Download/Sync Now..." or restart the Thunderbird client. Any new folders (labels) created in Gmail will sync to the client and any folders moved/changed/deleted folders in Gmail will move/change/delete on the client as well. (Note: Thunderbird has the concept of "subscribing" to IMAP folders (assumingly allowing you to determine which folders you want, rather than bringing all of them down and dragging loads of data across the wire). When used against Gmail, Thunderbird appears to automatically subscribe to all folders (including when folders are newly created in Gmail), so this might be why the refresh is happening properly.) This behavior is what I want with Exchange. When using Thunderbird with Exchange (2007), the folder list doesn't refresh when folders are added/changed/deleted on the server and/or from a different mail client. When I look at the subscription options, some are checked and some are not (not sure why Thunderbird picked some and not others). And when I add new folders on the server and/or from another client, they never even appear in Thunderbird's list of folders, preventing me from subscribing to them.

• What is the overhead when redirect through mod_proxy

  I have an API that used to run on Apache but now is served via lighttpd. I can easily switch the API URL in the app to the lighty port like api.net:81. I wonder if I should use mod_proxy instead to have cleaner urls. There is no redirect for legacy urls necessary. What would be the overhead for the Apache in between compared to the direct call? Would mod_proxy and Apache steal the benefit of lightys lightweightness?

• APC on PHP 5.4 does not seem to be installed after installation

  I've recently upgraded to PHP 5.4 from 5.3.6, I did the command apt-get upgrade php5 with the custom PHP 5.4 repo which I added to the apt-get repositories, now that I upgraded, I restarted php-fastcgi and php5-fpm the APC does not seem to be installed with it after I did pecl install apc it seems to configure and install with the details below: Configuring for: PHP Api Version: 20090626 Zend Module Api No: 20090626 Zend Extension Api No: 220090626 But in my phpinfo() I get this: PHP API 20100412 PHP Extension 20100525 Zend Extension 220100525 Which I don't understand, how can I configure PECL to install with PHP 5.4 with my version, my installation with apc.so is stored to /usr/lib/php5/20090626/ however in /usr/lib/php5/ I have two PHP versions: 20090626 20100525 How can I remove either one and leave PHP 5.4 and manage it to install apc in the correct PHP version? I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 on my server. I need help on this please.

• Build problems when adding `__str__` method to Boost Python C++ class

  I have started to play around with boost python a bit and ran into a problem. I tried to expose a C++ class to python which posed no problems. But I can't seem to manage to implement the __str__ functionality for the class without getting build errors I don't understand. I'm using boost 1_42 prebuild by boostpro. I build the library using cmake and the vs2010 compiler. I have a very simple setup. • DirectCompute

  In my previous blog post I introduced the concept of GPGPU ending with:On Windows, there is already a cross-GPU-vendor way of programming GPUs and that is the Direct X API. Specifically, on Windows Vista and Windows 7, the DirectX 11 API offers a dedicated subset of the API for GPGPU programming: DirectCompute. You use this API on the CPU side, to set up and execute the kernels on the GPU. The kernels are written in a language called HLSL (High Level Shader Language). You can use DirectCompute with HLSL to write a "compute shader", which is the term DirectX uses for what I've been referring to in this post as "kernel".In this post I want to share some links to get you started with DirectCompute and HLSL.1.   According to Microsoft, ODBC is a specification for a database API.  This API is database and operating system agnostic due to the fact that the primary goal of the ODBC API is to be language-independent. • REST and redirecting the response

  I'm developing a RESTful service. Here is a map of the current feature set: POST /api/document/file.jpg (creates the resource) GET /api/document/file.jpg (retrieves the resource) DELETE /api/document/file.jpg (removes the resource) So far, it does everything you might expect. I have a particular use case where I need to set up the browser to send a POST request using the multipart/form-data encoding for the document upload but when it is completed I want to redirect them back to the form. I know how to do a redirect, but I'm not certain about how the client and server should negotiate this behavior. Two approaches I'm considering: On the server check for the multipart/form-data encoding and, if present, redirect to the referrer when the request is complete. Add a service URI of /api/document/file.jpg/redirect to redirect to the referrer when the request is complete. I looked into setting an X header (X-myapp-redirect) but you can't tell the browser which headers to use like this. I manage the code for both the client and the server side so I'm flexible on solutions here. Is there a best practice to follow here?

  I use Blender3D, but the answer might not API-exclusive. I have some matrices I need to assign to PoseBones. The resulting pose looks fine when there is no bone hierarchy (parenting) and messed up when there is. I've uploaded an archive with sample blend of the rigged models, text animation importer and a test animation file here: http://www.2shared.com/file/5qUjmnIs/sample_files.html Import the animation by selecting an Armature and running the importer on "sba" file. Do this for both Armatures. This is how I assign the poses in the real (complex) importer: matrix_bases = ... # matrix from file animation_matrix = matrix_basis * pose.bones['mybone'].matrix.copy() pose.bones[bonename].matrix = animation_matrix If I go to edit mode, select all bones and press Alt+P to undo parenting, the Pose looks fine again. The API documentation says the PoseBone.matrix is in "object space", but it seems clear to me from these tests that they are relative to parent bones. Final 4x4 matrix after constraints and drivers are applied (object space) I tried doing something like this: matrix_basis = ... # matrix from file animation_matrix = matrix_basis * (pose.bones['mybone'].matrix.copy() * pose.bones[bonename].bone.parent.matrix_local.copy().inverted()) pose.bones[bonename].matrix = animation_matrix But it looks worse. Experimented with order of operations, no luck with all.   Why is dynamic endpoint binding needed? Sometimes a BPEL process instance has to determine at run-time which implementation of a web service interface is to be called. We’ll show you how to achieve that using dynamic endpoint binding. Let’s imagine the following scenario: we’re running a car rental agency called RYLC (Rent Your Legacy Car) which operates different locations. The process of renting a car is basically identical for all locations except for the determination which cars are currently available. This is depicted in the following diagram: There are three different implementations of the GetAvailableCars service. But how can we achieve calling them dynamically at run-time using Oracle SOA Suite? How to dynamically set the service endpoint There are just a couple of implementation steps we need to perform to enable dynamic endpoint binding: create a new SOA project in JDeveloper add a CarRental BPEL process add an external reference to the GetAvailableCars service within the composite create a DVM file containing the URI’s by which the services for the different locations can be accessed set the endpointURI property on the Invoke component calling the GetAvailableCars service (value is taken from the DVM file) Read the complete article here. • Lessons From OpenId, Cardspace and Facebook Connect

  (c) denise carbonell I think Johannes Ernst summarized pretty well what happened in a broad sense in regards to OpenId, Cardspace and Facebook Connect. However, I'm more interested in the lessons we can take away from this. First  - "Apple Lesson" - If user-centric identity is going to happen it's going to require not only technology but also a strong marketing campaign. I'm calling this the "Apple Lesson" because it's very similar to how Apple iPad saw success vs the tablet market. The iPad is not only a very good technology product but it was backed by a very good marketing plan. I know most people do not want to think about marketing here - but the fact is that nobody could really articulate why user-centric identity mattered in a way that the average person cared about. Second - "Facebook Lesson" - Facebook Connect solves a number of interesting problems that is easy for both consumer and service providers. For a consumer it's simple to log-in without any redirects. And while Facebook isn't perfect on privacy - no other major consumer-focused service on the Internet provides as much control about sharing identity information. From a developer perspective it is very easy to implement the SSO and fetch other identity information (if the user has given permission). This could only happen because a major company just decided to make a singular focus to make it happen. Third - "Developers Lesson" -  Facebook Social Graph API is by far the simplest API for accessing identity information which also is another reason why you're seeing such rapid growth in Facebook enabled Websites. By using a combination of URL and Javascript - the power a single HTML page now gives a developer writing Web applications is simply amazing. For example It doesn't get much simpler than this "http://api.facebook.com/mewilcox" for accessing identity.
