  • I am trying to understand Functions

    - by Moja Ra
    Ok I am coming into a stumbling block no matter what language I am using. I am trying to understand when I need to pass arguments in a Function and when I don't need to pass arguments in a function. Can someone give me some direction on where to find guidance on this?

  • New to PHP, need book recommendations

    - by bran
    Hey guys, I need few good book recommendations for PHP. I am trying to learn to develop webapps. I know there are other (arguably) better language out there that I should start with (ie, python). But I want to start with PHP and go from there. My programming knowledge is limited to html/css (I know they are not actually programming languages), and I have gone through half of a python book. Thanks! :)

  • C++ code generation with Python

    - by norapinephrine
    Can anyone point me to some documentation on how to write scripts in Python (or Perl or any other Linux friendly script language) that generate C++ code from XML or py files from the command line. I'd like to be able to write up some xml files and then run a shell command that reads these files and generates .h files with fully inlined functions, e.g. streaming operators, constructors, etc.

  • Should multiple regional websites all use the same database?

    - by John Himmelman
    I'm developing a cms for a company that has multiple regional sites (us, uk, china, russia, etc..). Should I use a separate database for each of these sites or use a single database with a 'site' field in each table? My main concern is the table language encoding (ie, can storing strings in different langauges in the same table cause problems, such as sorting issues).

  • C++ book for a c# developer

    - by Eldila
    I am a c# developer which finds himself having to relearn c++. The last time I programmed in c++ was in school and am looking for good books as a refresher. I want something that assumes previous programming exposure and gets straight to the point. Is there a book similar to K&R for c++? I know the language is bloated so a book that covers a subset of c++ would be ideal.

  • Beanshell equivalent for .Net

    - by Midhat
    Is there anything like Beanshell, which exposes CLR classes instead of Java classes, and lets you write scripts in C# or VB.Net (or any .Net language for that matter) Should come in handy to test one-liner code snippets

  • Where to place a debug log files for my daemon app?

    - by sasayins
    Hi, I am using C language and Linux as my programming platform. I am learning how to create a daemon, and I want to create a log file so that I write a debug message in my daemon. My question is where should I put the log file in my system. Should I put it in the var folder? Please advice. Many thanks.

  • How to hook to a keystroke under Windows Vista?

    - by Dave
    Hi. I'm working on a program idea which needs to respond when a particular Function key is pressed on the keyboard(like F10). (A) is that possible? (B) what language should i use (i'll be getting the development outsourced, so its not a problem) (c) any sample code which shows how it works?

  • Calculating with a variable outside of its bounds in C

    - by aquanar
    If I make a calculation with a variable where an intermediate part of the calculation goes higher then the bounds of that variable type, is there any hazard that some platforms may not like? This is an example of what I'm asking: int a, b; a=30000; b=(a*32000)/32767; I have compiled this, and it does give the correct answer of 29297 (well, within truncating error, anyway). But the part that worries me is that 30,000*32,000 = 960,000,000, which is a 30-bit number, and thus cannot be stored in a 16-bit int. The end result is well within the bounds of an int, but I was expecting that whatever working part of memory would have the same size allocated as the largest source variables did, so an overflow error would occur. This is just a small example to show my problem, I am trying to avoid using floating points by making the fraction be a fraction of the max amount able to be stored in that variable (in this case, a signed integer, so 32767 on the positive side), because the embedded system I'm using I believe does not have an FPU. So how do most processors handle calculations out of the bounds of the source and destination variables?

  • How to calculate the y-pixels of someones weight on a graph? (math+programming question)

    - by RexOnRoids
    I'm not that smart like some of you geniuses. I need some help from a math whiz. My app draws a graph of the users weight over time. I need a surefire way to always get the right pixel position to draw the weight point at for a given weight. For example, say I want to plot the weight 80.0(kg) on the graph when the range of weights is 80.0 to 40.0kg. I want to be able to plug in the weight (given I know the highest and lowest weights in the range also) and get the pixel result 400(y) (for the top of the graph). The graph is 300 pixels high (starts at 100 and ends at 400). The highest weight 80kg would be plot at 400 while the lowest weight 40kg would be plot at 100. And the intermediate weights should be plotted appropriately. I tried this but it does not work: -(float)weightToPixel:(float)theWeight { float graphMaxY = 400; //The TOP of the graph float graphMinY = 100; //The BOTTOM of the graph float yOffset = 100; //Graph itself is offset 100 pixels in the Y direction float coordDiff = graphMaxY-graphMinY; //The size in pixels of the graph float weightDiff = self.highestWeight-self.lowestWeight; //The weight gap float pixelIncrement = coordDiff/weightDiff; float weightY = (theWeight*pixelIncrement)-(coordDiff-yOffset); //The return value return weightYpixel; }

  • How to merge multiple arrays in pairs

    - by user3688059
    I have a problem with "pairing" arrays into one (by index). Here is an example: INPUT: inputArray = [ [0, 1, 2, 3, 4], [2, 3, 5, 7, 8], [9, 6, 1] ] OUTPUT: outputArray = [ [0,2,9], [1,3,6], [2,5,1], [3,7,chooseRandom()], [4,8,chooseRandom()]] Questions: 1) How to avoid out of range problem 2) How to write chooseRandom() to choose N neighbour I'm using python but feel free to share your thoughts in any language.
